Guidelines for the Argumentative/Persuasive Essay
Citing Sources
You are not to employ footnotes or endnotes in your essay. Rather, when you employ another's ideas
or quote from a source in your essay, please employ the Modern Language Association, "MLA,"
format for in–text citations; the format is set forth in Keys, p. 144 et seq.
Quoting, Citing, and Referencing Source Material
Please also review the material on summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting material set forth in Keys,
p. 122–25.

Classical Argument Essay: A Class Analysis
Before coming to this class, I already felt prepared to write academic assignments. I took higher
level english classes in highschool and I think that the class structure combined with the excellent
teachers helped me prepare for college english classes. In the course, going to the library and
learning about research databases helped me most as a writer. In high school we were given access to
some of the same databases, but were only presented with login information and told we should
use it in our papers. All of us were confused by the complexity and ended up just using sources
found by a Google search. In this class, however, it was so helpful for the librarian to sit us in front
of the computer and actually have us pull up something to search. I feel that the sources I
discovered with the help of the database were...show more content...
For this essay I chose to write about a program I had been involved with for a very long time, teen
court. I enjoyed writing this essay and was able to provide my own background information on the
topic. I especially liked the interviews I was able to include in the paper. These interviews gave me
the opportunity to connect the reader to someone who was actually involved in the process and a
leader of the organization. I feel that the interviews united the paper and provided first hand
experiences for better understanding, making it a strong argument. In contrast, my supporting
reasons argument, Essay #1, represents my weakest work this semester. In this essay I felt that I
followed too much of a structured format. This format is great for organization, but falls short in
effectively presenting information to the reader. The paper contained too many references to pure
research and data instead of offering a new interpretation of the data to the reader. Overall, the
information was all there, but a better presentation of ideas should have been

What I Learned In Mla Format
Reflection Essay
Throughout this semester I have learned many valuable resources, and tools. The big thing you
taught us was how to write and argument paper. Also I have learned different tools on
summarizing, how to better my skills for peer reviews, new library skills, and MLA format. Most of
these I already knew, but you taught us them more in depth, and you gave me better understandings
of them. With writing an argumentative paper, it's important to have all the right facts, and make
sure you have reliable sources. If you don't have the right facts or reliable sources nobody will
want to read your argument; because you wont have the right facts to back up your points. When
writing an argumentative paper, its good to know all the facts about each side. Knowing all the facts
about each side is important, because people want to read...show more content...
Like summarizing, and writing an essay I knew how to do it, but going in and listening to the
speaker explain it to us helped a lot. I learned more on how to use the thesaurus, and all the different
skills he taught us on using key words to looks information up.
MLA format is something I have always kind of needed help with. Until this semester for some
reason I could never really cite my sources that well. Its something I knew how to do, but when it
came time to do it my mind went blank. When you went over everything on the bored that helped
me so much (also because I took notes), but only because you told us to take them. With MLA
format I learned that when quoting, if its more than three lines you have to use block quote. I didn't
know that till I got to this class.
In summary, all these skills will be helpful for my next few college years, and when I go off to get
jobs. Thank you for teaching us everything you have. From something you are supposed to teach to
common sense things. You are a wonderful teacher, and I'm so glad you were my

Argumentative Essay On Knowledge Is Power
Franklin County is in the Dark
If the statement "Knowledge is Power" is correct, then Franklin County has a power outage. Unlike
an actual power outage, the solution to this type of issue does not require a call to the local electrical
company. According to the state government of Tennessee, approximately, fifty
–seven percent of all
residents in Tennessee have a post–secondary education in 2014. Out of all the residents of Franklin
County only forty–three percent have a post–secondary education. These numbers are thought to be
on an exponential decline and will , in theory, be worse in the following years to come. Why are
these numbers so miniscule? One major component that provides an explanation is that the nearest
college is forty–seven and a half miles away. Because of this fact, and many more, there are
countless reason as to why Franklin County needs a local technical institute.
For instance, if Franklin County had a technical institute it would promote community growth as a
whole. According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics some ninety–four and six tenths of
a million Americans (age sixteen and over) are either not working or have made no effort to find a
job. With a population of three–hundred twenty million, that means nearly one in three people in the
United States are currently out of work. Just...show more content...
These high school programs aid students in discovering what career choices they have and what
their future career could be like. The only dilemma is that once the high school has sparked their
interest, they have nowhere to go to pursue their career of choice. It is unfair to encourage and
prepare a student for a college education, but not present them with a reasonable place to seek out a
post–secondary education. If the community wishes to promote post–secondary education ,then the
community needs to provide a means of obtaining

Over the past century, the Earth has experienced a dramatic change in temperature and we need to
work to reverse it. Politicians have debated the idea of climate change for years now and nothing has
really been done to improve the situation. Some politicians have been exposed to the facts about
climate change, while others believe in a hypothetical theory that the Earth goes through "cycles".
The government needs to stop arguing and act now, to educate the public and regulate the
phenomenon of climate change, before it is too late.
On one side of the political spectrum, politicians tend to believe that the Earth goes through natural
processes or "cycles" over time. This theory is more of an abstract idea, because there is no math or

The government can subsidize companies that improve technology to eliminate fossil fuel usage,
which could be key to reversing climate change. When fossil fuels are eliminated the Earth could
reverse climate change in just years. The government should also work to educate the public
about the issue, however cannot tackle this alone. Harvard President, Drew Faust says,
"Universities have a crucial role to play, acting through research and education" (Powell). With the
help of universities, the government can educate the public about the impacts of climate change
and how to conserve energy usage. Most of the population does not know that the Ozone layer
absorbs the Sun's radiation and when it is destroyed, less radiation is absorbed and more is
released to the Earth. In a study performed by Yale, the respondents were graded based on their
knowledge of climate change; over 52% of the respondents were given an F based on what they
knew (Leiserowitz). Advertisements about climate change, that have a sentimental effect on people's
emotions, can be a great way to educate the public. Also, educate younger generations from the start
of their learning period. Teaching and building good habits, while generations are still young, could

Abortion
In 2008, twelve women taking resident in the U.S. died due to legal abortions performed during the
second or third trimesters of pregnancy. Abortion should be available to all females living in the
United States, but must be a legal citizen to have late abortions, which are during the second or third
trimesters of pregnancy. Abortion is a right that women have, and the Fourth Amendment "Search
and Seizure" supports it. Fewer women will exercise abortion if it is kept legal in the U.S. Late
abortions are dangerous, so only legal citizens of the U.S. may have second or third trimester

anything to talk a woman out of having a legal abortion. Late abortions are performed during the

Argumentative Essay On English Class
What I am about to do is inform you on how to survive the ferocious English 1302 course to make
life a bit easier on you. I mean, you're at the edge of your seat dying with loads of work, starving
like a dying child, living off of pennies and the only thing that is keeping you from collapsing is
your Starbucks drink that is filled with four shots of espresso, right? Well, by the time you get to the
end of this letter, you'll thank me later for it.
When you enter your English class, you will come across many assignments. They happen to be your
annotated bibliography and your researched argument essay, or in other words RAE. The purpose of
the bibliography is to critique sources and gather enough data for you essay. It includes citations, a
summary of your topic and personal thoughts of the sources you chose. The RAE is a persuasive
essay where you attempt to create an argument that is supported with the information you gathered
in your annotated bibliography. In my RAE, I argued that children can recuperate after their parents'
separation. Its purpose was to demonstrate that if parents were to come together and realize that

I learned that by annotating a certain part of the reading, it helped increase my understanding. Not
only that but it helped me not miss a single bit of important information. Writing notes in the
margins of the text was really helpful because it was a summary of the entire paragraph and
whenever I would look back at my notes, it reminded me of what I read. Also, circling words I
didn't know was very accommodating because again, it helped me understand the concept a bit
more. Underlining words that seem important to you is a big tip I suggest because you are able to
use that information when you are talking about your source. You can expand that information by
linking it to another similar source. Therefore, it is important to annotate. It'll take up extra time but
it will be worth

The expression argument has two meanings in scholarly writing. First, it means a composition that
takes a position on one side of a divisive issue. You might write an argument against the death
penalty, or for or against censorship of pornography. But argument has another meaning, too. It
means an essay that, simply, argues a point. You might assemble an argument about the significance
of ancestor myths in a certain aborigine culture, or you might write an argument defending your
understanding of any poem or essay that is read in your philosophy class. (Winthrop University)

points with credible evidence. You are taking a position. In a sense,...show more content...
In emotionally stimulating situations, however, the audience will hold more sturdily to its beliefs
the more strongly those beliefs are challenged. Young, Becker and Pike suggest breaking these
barriers to communication by using a variation of Rogers' non–directive therapy. In
"Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation," Rogers suggests that in emotional disputes,
neither party should put forward a position until she has carefully, non–judgmentally and with the
maximum possible empathy restated the position of the other, to the other's satisfaction. (Brent)
This will convey to the other the sense that he is understood and that the two parties are more
similar than different, thereby creating a context for communication. (Brent) Carl Rogers was born
January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, the fourth of six children. His education started in the second
grade because he could already read before kindergarten. He spent his adolescence isolated,
independent and self–disciplined. He went to the University of Wisconsin as an agriculture major,
but later switched to religion to study for the ministry. He has been quoted as saying "that his new
experiences so broadened his thinking that he began to doubt some of his basic religious views."
(Boeree) Carl Rogers later married Ms. Helen Elliot and moved to New York to start school at the
Union Theological Seminary, a famous liberal religious institution.

"The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a
lead–lined room with armed guards."(Spafford). The word privacy has become a buzz word in the
current decade compared to how it used to be talked about in the last decade. As we all are aware
of the recent happenings around the world with regards to privacy, we all should be worried that
nothing is safe in the times we are living in, as every bit of information is getting snatched
somehow or the other through different channels. This information can be something that is related
to our personal, family or professional life. I believe that individual privacy outweighs money or
anything at this moment in the world right now. If we lose money or property, we can regain it
somehow, but if we lose our personal information to someone or an agency, it's challenging to get it
back before it gets misused.
Danial J. Solove is an eminent author and a law professor at University of George Washington law
school. Dr. Solove introduces the article why privacy matters if you have "Nothing to Hide" in an
interesting way that, In his introduction of the eassy, he puts a valid question to the audience
regarding their current privacy standards. He starts off this article by presenting the views of
various people on the most debated topic around the world at present which is "Nothing to Hide."
All throughout the article, Solove tries to make an argument both in a positive and negative tone. He
also supports his arguments with so many valid examples that, it makes you wonder, which side of
the coin he stands.
Firstly, after seeing the collective inferences made by the people in the initial paragraphs of the
article, Solove explains us in which form should we look at the argument "Nothing to Hide." If we
extremely see the argument, for example, If a person says he has nothing to hide, another person
comes and means, since you have nothing to hide can I take a nude picture of yours and show it to
everyone which is an extreme form of taking that argument. Dr.Solove feels that taking an argument
in an exaggerated form isn't a good thing because

Hook: What do we look for in an educational system?
Describe the issue, the problem, and consequences of the problem not being fixed: The educational
system is meant to prepare students to their future opportunities and jobs. Clearly, a good education
will get you a good job. However, our system is not preparing our young people we enough. Our
students misbehave without consequences, our teachers are not free to solve problems
independently, and our curriculum is not meaningful. Furthermore, the leaders in our system are not
open to change. Our cultures is at risk of total destruction. This is why the American educational
system is not the best and need to change.

The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal, but what about the
women, the other half of the population? These men that wrote this document say that they
believe in equality, but don't think twice about restricting women from having the same rights
they have. One of the things that women are being deprived of is participating in their
government on a national level. Women are not allowed to vote. Women can bring great, new
ideas to the table. Now that more women are able to go to college for a higher education, men
should start to realize that we are, and have been, capable of choosing who we think is best fit to
be our president. In fact, about forty percent of college students are women. And still, these men
don't acknowledge the fact that we are ready to participate. God took a rib out of Adam's side to
create Eve for a reason. He could've picked the head or the neck, but he chose his side. There is a
reason as to why he would pick that specific place. It is because God created men and women equal.

Should English be the Official Language of the United States The debate on whether the United
States should make English the official language has been raging within the borders of the country
for decades. Several bills have been presented to Congress over the years, but have stagnated due to
the opposition on either side. Though there would certainly be drawbacks to introducing English as
the official language of the United States, there would also be immeasurable benefit. Not only would

Naturalization Services' which is currently required to translate the citizenship test into multiple
languages. In all, U.S. taxpayers shell out $13 billion a year funding a multi–lingual government
(U.S. English, 1995).
The laws currently in the books are even being used to squeeze more money out of the government
and businesses. Executive Order 13166, which was signed by President Clinton and later enforced
by President Bush, requires all federal agencies and recipients of federal funds to provide translation
services for non–English speakers. This requirement is at the American tax payer's expense. An
Iranian immigrant in Oklahoma recently used the Executive Order as grounds for complaint asking
the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate the state because it failed to give the driver's
license exam in Farsi (McAlpin, 2008). The U.S. Supreme Court rejected the argument citing an
individual may not sue for foreign–language services by charging discrimination under the "nation
origin" category of the Civil Rights Act.

(HHS) are rallying support for those citizens who do not currently speak English well or at all. The

Mandatory Vaccination Argumentative Essay
Mandatory vaccinations have been hotly debated in the United States for over two centuries, making
the argument almost as old as the country itself. As early as 1809, Massachusetts became the first
state to mandate the world's premiere vaccine. Authorities recognized the life–saving benefits of the
smallpox vaccine. They chose to require inoculation to protect the community from further
outbreaks. Public outrage ensued as some community members feared the new vaccine and believed
they should be able to choose if they wished to receive it. The most vocal protestors formed
anti–compulsory vaccination groups and were successful in getting laws overturned in many states.
However, even the United States Supreme Court has upheld states' rights to require immunization.

Despite significant progress in the fight against preventable disease, millions still die needlessly
each year. According to UNICEF, originally known as the United Nations International Children's
Emergency Fund, a vaccine preventable disease is responsible for 2 million fatal infections
worldwide each year. About 75% of these deaths occur in children under five years of age. (N) In
more vivid terms, UNICEF notes that vaccine–preventable diseases kill a child every 20 seconds.
(D) Due to high rates of childhood vaccination, the United States has experienced a dramatic
reduction in such deaths. A comparison of the years 1950 and 2010 clearly illustrates the benefits of
vaccinations. During this 60–year period, deaths from diphtheria reduced from 410 to 0, tetanus
from 336 to 3, pertussis from 1,118 to 26, and polio from 1,904 to 0. Measles deaths dropped from
468 in 1950 to 0 in 2008, the last year a United States death rate was recorded. It's not surprising that
vaccinations have been touted as one of the top ten health achievements of the 20th century by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In order to have a good argumentative essay, there are a few important standards of critical
thinking that is needed to be found in the essay such as the clearness, accuracy, importance or
relevance, sufficiency, depth, breath and precision that is stated by Nosich. The strength of this
argumentative essay is consider weak because it does not capture the interest of the reader and
was not persuasive enough; even though from the introduction of the argumentative essay
includes full sentences and a good opinion, the argumentative essay is all objective. The
introduction includes too much of the emotional appeals, such as when it wrote " Day after day
the number of people worshipping this icon has been growing since the birth of this creature. well
to many it may seem harmless idol but in my opinion, Mickey Mouse is an 'devil in disguise'
influencing the minds of young and old people to adopt the culture of the 'devil' which doesn't
blend will with the moral values of society and should be banned". To improve the introduction, the
writer should include of all objectives statements relative facts and appeals to the mind of people
who agree or disagree with the topic.

Argument From Analogy Essay
The argument from analogy is an inductive argument that focuses on the problem of other minds
and aims to show that we are justified in inferring the existence of other minds. British philosopher,
Bertrand Russell, describes the argument from analogy as follows: "The behaviour of other people
is in many ways analogous to our own, and we suppose that it must have analogous causes. What
people say is what we should say if we had certain thoughts, and so we infer that they probably have
these thoughts. They give us information which we can sometimes subsequently verify" (Russell,
"Analogy", p89). Norman Malcolm argues that the argument from analogy does poorly in its
attempts to show that we are justified in inferring the existence of other minds. In assessing whether
the argument from analogy succeeds in its aims, I will raise and respond to Malcolm's objection
against the argument from analogy; Austrian–born British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein's 'Beetle
in a Box' thought experiment; as well as Welsh philosopher H. H. Price's argument and English
philosopher Stuart Hampshire's argument in defence of the argument from analogy....show more

From subjective observation, Russell claims to know that A, which is a thought or feeling,
causes B, which is a bodily act (Russell, "Analogy", p110). Russell argues that believing in the
existence of other minds requires some postulate, and describes this postulate to be "If, whenever
we can observe whether A and B are present or absent, we find that every case of B has an A as a
causal antecedent, then it is probable that most B's have A's as causal antecedents, even in cases
where observation does not enable us to know whether A is present or not" (Russell, "Analogy",

Argumentative Essay On Screen Time
Technology has been part of our daily live more frequently than before. Screen time has been more
popularly used on kids and adolescents. On a daily bases many kids seem to spend more time
inside on their tablets, instead of having to spend time with other kids. This is a problem that is
becoming more popular over the years,on whether kids need to spend that much time on technology
or not. Parents either seem to have strict technology usage, or they either don't. There has always
been a huge controversy with experts, who either think that screen time is beneficial or could cause
problems later on in life. There are many views towards this topic, from hurting kids brains, to
helping them during school, and socially.

In order to balance both there has to be comparative with the parents. Technology isn't good nor
bad. It can only benefit the child if the parents put a limit to their time in the screen. Parents need to
set up a schedule in where the kids will follow the time the kids will be using the tablet/ phone. As
well have time to play with other kids, and just interact with there own family member. In the
article, Screen time: A guide for parents states, " keeping computers out of the bedroom, and keep
them in a common area in your house. This will make sure that the child isn't using their
computers/ tablets during the time they have to rest. Kids need to have a good rest, and not having
technology in their rooms because it could cause irregular sleep. Just having the parent take action
in how much kids need to spend time in the screens can be a good start. Luscombe argues, " Take
away the idea that all screens are bad, but the face–to –face time for young people is an important
part of the socialization process". Parents seem to not understand that children need to develop
good social skills, and that can only be done by interacting with others, and get a sense on others
points of views. Parents need to stop giving the kids technology to keep them quiet for a while,
because at the end it's hurting the child

The Importance Of Writing An Argumentative Essay
As a student in a beginning English class some elements may seem difficult at the beginning but
with practice they become long lasting skills. Writing an argumentative is not an easy task there is a
lot of elements that have to come together to create a successful essay but as many other things, it
requires constant practice and effort. At the start of this course I wasn't a very good writer myself,
and I can see the huge improvement this course made by looking at my first argumentative essay. I
was able to identify and apply the requisites of a good argument essay. A well thought structure,
reliable evidence, and a counterargument are three essential components of argumentative writing.
The structure of an essay is the foundation to a good argumentative paper. Throughout this course
I learned the importance of having an essay structure, before I started this class I didn't have a
very clear vision of how to correctly format my essay. In my diagnostic essay, which was the first
one I wrote for English 1302, had five paragraphs. That is considered a standard structure of many
essays but it is more of a skeleton. Looking back at that essay I see how poor my introduction was,
I did not even have a clear thesis. One only thing even close to one that I could spot was, "The
"millennials," people born in the last two decades of the 20th century, are failing to reflect Rich's
model for a good education." It merely addresses the topic in a simple way. It did not serve the
purpose a

  • 3. Classical Argument Essay: A Class Analysis Before coming to this class, I already felt prepared to write academic assignments. I took higher level english classes in highschool and I think that the class structure combined with the excellent teachers helped me prepare for college english classes. In the course, going to the library and learning about research databases helped me most as a writer. In high school we were given access to some of the same databases, but were only presented with login information and told we should use it in our papers. All of us were confused by the complexity and ended up just using sources found by a Google search. In this class, however, it was so helpful for the librarian to sit us in front of the computer and actually have us pull up something to search. I feel that the sources I discovered with the help of the database were...show more content... For this essay I chose to write about a program I had been involved with for a very long time, teen court. I enjoyed writing this essay and was able to provide my own background information on the topic. I especially liked the interviews I was able to include in the paper. These interviews gave me the opportunity to connect the reader to someone who was actually involved in the process and a leader of the organization. I feel that the interviews united the paper and provided first hand experiences for better understanding, making it a strong argument. In contrast, my supporting reasons argument, Essay #1, represents my weakest work this semester. In this essay I felt that I followed too much of a structured format. This format is great for organization, but falls short in effectively presenting information to the reader. The paper contained too many references to pure research and data instead of offering a new interpretation of the data to the reader. Overall, the information was all there, but a better presentation of ideas should have been Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Also I have learned different tools on summarizing, how to better my skills for peer reviews, new library skills, and MLA format. Most of these I already knew, but you taught us them more in depth, and you gave me better understandings of them. With writing an argumentative paper, it's important to have all the right facts, and make sure you have reliable sources. If you don't have the right facts or reliable sources nobody will want to read your argument; because you wont have the right facts to back up your points. When writing an argumentative paper, its good to know all the facts about each side. Knowing all the facts about each side is important, because people want to read...show more content... Until this semester for some reason I could never really cite my sources that well. Its something I knew how to do, but when it came time to do it my mind went blank. When you went over everything on the bored that helped me so much (also because I took notes), but only because you told us to take them. With MLA format I learned that when quoting, if its more than three lines you have to use block quote. I didn't know that till I got to this class. In summary, all these skills will be helpful for my next few college years, and when I go off to get jobs. Thank you for teaching us everything you have. Unlike an actual power outage, the solution to this type of issue does not require a call to the local electrical company. According to the state government of Tennessee, approximately, fifty –seven percent of all residents in Tennessee have a post–secondary education in 2014. Out of all the residents of Franklin County only forty–three percent have a post–secondary education. These numbers are thought to be on an exponential decline and will , in theory, be worse in the following years to come. Why are these numbers so miniscule? One major component that provides an explanation is that the nearest college is forty–seven and a half miles away. Because of this fact, and many more, there are countless reason as to why Franklin County needs a local technical institute. For instance, if Franklin County had a technical institute it would promote community growth as a whole. According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics some ninety–four and six tenths of a million Americans (age sixteen and over) are either not working or have made no effort to find a job. With a population of three–hundred twenty million, that means nearly one in three people in the United States are currently out of work. Just...show more content... Politicians have debated the idea of climate change for years now and nothing has really been done to improve the situation. Some politicians have been exposed to the facts about climate change, while others believe in a hypothetical theory that the Earth goes through "cycles". The government needs to stop arguing and act now, to educate the public and regulate the phenomenon of climate change, before it is too late. On one side of the political spectrum, politicians tend to believe that the Earth goes through natural processes or "cycles" over time. This theory is more of an abstract idea, because there is no math or science...show more content... The government can subsidize companies that improve technology to eliminate fossil fuel usage, which could be key to reversing climate change. When fossil fuels are eliminated the Earth could reverse climate change in just years. The government should also work to educate the public about the issue, however cannot tackle this alone. Harvard President, Drew Faust says, "Universities have a crucial role to play, acting through research and education" (Powell). With the help of universities, the government can educate the public about the impacts of climate change and how to conserve energy usage. Most of the population does not know that the Ozone layer absorbs the Sun's radiation and when it is destroyed, less radiation is absorbed and more is released to the Earth. In a study performed by Yale, the respondents were graded based on their knowledge of climate change; over 52% of the respondents were given an F based on what they knew (Leiserowitz). • 9. The expression argument has two meanings in scholarly writing. First, it means a composition that takes a position on one side of a divisive issue. You might write an argument against the death penalty, or for or against censorship of pornography. But argument has another meaning, too. It means an essay that, simply, argues a point. You might assemble an argument about the significance of ancestor myths in a certain aborigine culture, or you might write an argument defending your understanding of any poem or essay that is read in your philosophy class. Young, Becker and Pike suggest breaking these barriers to communication by using a variation of Rogers' non–directive therapy. In "Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation," Rogers suggests that in emotional disputes, neither party should put forward a position until she has carefully, non–judgmentally and with the maximum possible empathy restated the position of the other, to the other's satisfaction. (Brent) This will convey to the other the sense that he is understood and that the two parties are more similar than different, thereby creating a context for communication. (Brent) Carl Rogers was born January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, the fourth of six children. His education started in the second grade because he could already read before kindergarten. He spent his adolescence isolated, independent and self–disciplined. He went to the University of Wisconsin as an agriculture major, but later switched to religion to study for the ministry. He has been quoted as saying "that his new experiences so broadened his thinking that he began to doubt some of his basic religious views." (Boeree) Carl Rogers later married Ms. Helen Elliot and moved to New York to start school at the Union Theological Seminary, a famous liberal religious institution. The word privacy has become a buzz word in the current decade compared to how it used to be talked about in the last decade. As we all are aware of the recent happenings around the world with regards to privacy, we all should be worried that nothing is safe in the times we are living in, as every bit of information is getting snatched somehow or the other through different channels. This information can be something that is related to our personal, family or professional life. I believe that individual privacy outweighs money or anything at this moment in the world right now. If we lose money or property, we can regain it somehow, but if we lose our personal information to someone or an agency, it's challenging to get it back before it gets misused. Danial J. Solove is an eminent author and a law professor at University of George Washington law school. Dr. Solove introduces the article why privacy matters if you have "Nothing to Hide" in an interesting way that, In his introduction of the eassy, he puts a valid question to the audience regarding their current privacy standards. He starts off this article by presenting the views of various people on the most debated topic around the world at present which is "Nothing to Hide." All throughout the article, Solove tries to make an argument both in a positive and negative tone. He also supports his arguments with so many valid examples that, it makes you wonder, which side of the coin he stands. Firstly, after seeing the collective inferences made by the people in the initial paragraphs of the article, Solove explains us in which form should we look at the argument "Nothing to Hide." If we extremely see the argument, for example, If a person says he has nothing to hide, another person comes and means, since you have nothing to hide can I take a nude picture of yours and show it to everyone which is an extreme form of taking that argument. These men that wrote this document say that they believe in equality, but don't think twice about restricting women from having the same rights they have. One of the things that women are being deprived of is participating in their government on a national level. Women are not allowed to vote. Women can bring great, new ideas to the table. Now that more women are able to go to college for a higher education, men should start to realize that we are, and have been, capable of choosing who we think is best fit to be our president. In fact, about forty percent of college students are women. And still, these men don't acknowledge the fact that we are ready to participate. God took a rib out of Adam's side to create Eve for a reason. He could've picked the head or the neck, but he chose his side. There is a reason as to why he would pick that specific place. It is because God created men and women equal. There can not be a man without a woman to give birth to him. We keep this race alive. Several bills have been presented to Congress over the years, but have stagnated due to the opposition on either side. The laws currently in the books are even being used to squeeze more money out of the government and businesses. Executive Order 13166, which was signed by President Clinton and later enforced by President Bush, requires all federal agencies and recipients of federal funds to provide translation services for non–English speakers. An Iranian immigrant in Oklahoma recently used the Executive Order as grounds for complaint asking the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate the state because it failed to give the driver's license exam in Farsi (McAlpin, 2008). As early as 1809, Massachusetts became the first state to mandate the world's premiere vaccine. Authorities recognized the life–saving benefits of the smallpox vaccine. They chose to require inoculation to protect the community from further outbreaks. Public outrage ensued as some community members feared the new vaccine and believed they should be able to choose if they wished to receive it. The most vocal protestors formed anti–compulsory vaccination groups and were successful in getting laws overturned in many states. However, even the United States Supreme Court has upheld states' rights to require immunization. (A) Vaccinations should be...show more content... Despite significant progress in the fight against preventable disease, millions still die needlessly each year. According to UNICEF, originally known as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, a vaccine preventable disease is responsible for 2 million fatal infections worldwide each year. About 75% of these deaths occur in children under five years of age. (N) In more vivid terms, UNICEF notes that vaccine–preventable diseases kill a child every 20 seconds. (D) Due to high rates of childhood vaccination, the United States has experienced a dramatic reduction in such deaths. A comparison of the years 1950 and 2010 clearly illustrates the benefits of vaccinations. During this 60–year period, deaths from diphtheria reduced from 410 to 0, tetanus from 336 to 3, pertussis from 1,118 to 26, and polio from 1,904 to 0. Measles deaths dropped from 468 in 1950 to 0 in 2008, the last year a United States death rate was recorded. In order to have a good argumentative essay, there are a few important standards of critical thinking that is needed to be found in the essay such as the clearness, accuracy, importance or relevance, sufficiency, depth, breath and precision that is stated by Nosich. The strength of this argumentative essay is consider weak because it does not capture the interest of the reader and was not persuasive enough; even though from the introduction of the argumentative essay includes full sentences and a good opinion, the argumentative essay is all objective. The introduction includes too much of the emotional appeals, such as when it wrote " Day after day the number of people worshipping this icon has been growing since the birth of this creature. well to many it may seem harmless idol but in my opinion, Mickey Mouse is an 'devil in disguise' influencing the minds of young and old people to adopt the culture of the 'devil' which doesn't blend will with the moral values of society and should be banned". Argument From Analogy Essay The argument from analogy is an inductive argument that focuses on the problem of other minds and aims to show that we are justified in inferring the existence of other minds. British philosopher, Bertrand Russell, describes the argument from analogy as follows: "The behaviour of other people is in many ways analogous to our own, and we suppose that it must have analogous causes. What people say is what we should say if we had certain thoughts, and so we infer that they probably have these thoughts. They give us information which we can sometimes subsequently verify" (Russell, "Analogy", p89). Norman Malcolm argues that the argument from analogy does poorly in its attempts to show that we are justified in inferring the existence of other minds. In assessing whether the argument from analogy succeeds in its aims, I will raise and respond to Malcolm's objection against the argument from analogy; Austrian–born British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein's 'Beetle in a Box' thought experiment; as well as Welsh philosopher H.
