1. Doctrine of Jesus Christ
JESUS- THE CENTRE OF ALL CREATED ORDER
Colossians 1v 13-23
By Him and in Him all things were created-invisible and visible-all things were created by him
and for him!
...to reconcile to himself all things...by making peace through His blood shed on the cross-
reconciled by Christ's physical body through death...
Why do we study this and need to be convinced of this truth?
See Matthew chapter 16v 13-20-read.
Peter's revelation of who Christ is was paramount to the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ.
The Word of God refers to JESUS as “the cornerstone-capstone” Ephesians 2v20
Peter's revelation was that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God!”you are the Christ the son of
the living God!”v 16
Revelation needed for Kingdom building! God gives us a revelation of this truth as we study His word.
Read Colossians1v13-23
He is the center of order , creation and secular and sacred history-Roman calendar BC and AD
Center of God's two most significant events-creation and redemption
Center of Christian faith-central to the doctrine of Christianity is Jesus Christ His work and his person.
We need to look at the unique truth that Jesus was both human and divine.
We need to understand that 'atonement for sin' of man was made through death on the cross.
These two truths are the foundations of all we believe as Christians.
THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST.
His pre-existence Micah 5v2, Isaiah 9v6,John 8v58 colossians1v16- pre-existence is required for
creation-and is a deity prerequisite.
Study John chapter 1 v1-18.”In the beginning...” Existed and created.
His claims- “Son of God” and “I AM”
John 8v 48-58 “my Father glorifies me”, “...Before Abraham I AM” MARK 14 v 61-62 Are you the
Christ?” “I AM”
Matthew 22 v 41-45 ...son of David ...”whose son is the Christ?”
John 11v41 'father i thank you'...John 12 v 27' Father save me from this'
Jesus death- surely this is proof- read Mark 15 v 37-38 'surely this is the Son of God!”
Genealogy- Luke 3 v21-end
His Names-God-El Theos (Hebrews 1v8), Lord-Adoni Matthew 22v43 and 45 Lord-Yaweh- Rev 1v 8
King of kings and Lord of Lords Rev 19 v16
Christ greek-messiah Hebrew , Saviour Lord.-'the anointed one'-Joshua-the Lord saves Jesus is the
Greek version of Joshua
Attributes-Omnipotent,Matthew 28v18, Omnipresent Matthew 18 v20Omniscient Mark 2v8 John
1v48
Acts-creates all things(John 1v3,Col1 v16 sustains all things (Heb 1v3),forgives sins (Mark 2v 1-12)
receives worship (Jn20v25) lives to intercede, judges all things(John 5v27), sends the Holy Spirit
(John15v 26)
2. Other claims-
...worshiped-truelly you are the Son of God-Matthew 4v33...I have seen and testify that this is the Son
of God-John 1 v34,35...we know and believe that you are the Holy one of God- John6 v69......yes Lord,
I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God...John 11v27...etc
JESUS Pre-incarnation-WORK
Function was to : through Him all things were created John 1v 1-12
Helped to redeem Israel-see Israels history-Old Covenant
Appeared to individuals in Old Testament records-Abraham (Gen 18), Jacob (Genesis 32) Daniel and
friends- (Daniel 3) Elisha( 1 Kings 19), Joshua-(Joshua 5) Moses...(Exodus 34)
CHRIST'S HUMANITY
Human Body-Normal Birth Matthew 1v18-24...Luke 2v 9-12- 20 angels announce baby is in manger
grew normal Luke 2 v 40, and 51 52 He refers to himself as a man John 8v 40 and was recognised
as a man”...determined to kill me , a man...”
Human Soul-Jesus clearly had a body and a soul/spirit-”my soul is overwhelmed...”Matthew 26 v38
“Into your hands I commit my spirit” Luke 23 v 46
Human experience- Jesus shared natural human experiences- He slept, he ate, he breathed...felt
compassion, got hungry, tired, angry, temptation, friendship..(chat generally about this)- these
experiences involved body and spirit.
Human names- “Son of Man”-Luke 19v10, “Son of David” Mark 10v 47, “Jesus” Matthew1 v 21, the
man Jesus Christ” 1 Tim. 2v5
Now we get to the NITTY GRITTY!!!!!!
CENTRAL-unique fact that he was GOD-MAN
hypostatic union-divine/human nature-fully God/fully man
FULLY!
undeminished deity and full perfect humanity
not seperate individuals but ! one
a mystery-faith to believe
FULL but not fallen:
Virgin birth-free from original sin,Holy Spirit 'seed' human not fallen (God Fathered) Matthew 1v 23,
Luke 1v 35
FREE of actual sin-sinless Hebrews 4 v15-The impeccable Christ! “Able NOT to Sin”
Impossible for God to sin!!!!
His testing proved that he was sinless-He could not give in to it because his very nature was perfect!
The human and divine nature meant he could experience the struggle of temptation but it was
impossible for him to sin-to change
Jesus knew He could not give in to it because HIS Purity alone was our only hope. “Jesus Christ the
righteous one” 1 John 2v1
So how come we couldn't see his glory?KENOSIS
-to make yourself nothing/empty yourself Phil 2v7
Mark 9v1-12,Matthew 17 v1-13 (read)
Took on humanity as a limitation-veiling of his glory-non use of his divine power-not getting rid of but
rather “emptying”-voluntary non use of
He couldn't stop being God but he could choose not to use his divinity.
God is unchanging so cannot 'stop' being who He is as the second person of Trinity.
