The Newest Powered Commercial By Coca Cola Co.
Every professional athlete has his own story which made him as we see him now. Some Journeys
were more difficult than others. However, the common keywords between all of them are the hard
work and determination. Coca–Cola Co.'s PowerAde started its campaign "Just a kid" in the
beginning of last year. PowerAde has used inspirational stories of professional athlete, who used to
have a very hard start and they made their path into fame and success, to deliver a message to
everyone that no one has chosen his start but we all can decide our termination. The newest powered
commercial tells the story of Seattle Seahawk football player Jimmy Graham, who had a very tough
upbringing in a group house in North Carolina to a superstar in the NFL. This paper is going to
analyze that commercial and dive inside it to get deep meaning and catch the subtle message beyond
its scenes. One of the meanings of this commercial is demonstrating the notion of the American
dream. The mythical believe that anyone can start from the bottom and by continuing hard work, he
can achieve his goal and attain wealth and possible fame. This meaning has been shown at the
beginning of the commercial when it is opened on Jimmy Graham as a boy enters the Goldsboro
community orphanage in North Carolina where he has been beaten up and bullied by other older
boys. While that happens, the narrator was telling the story of a mouse who fell in a bucket of
cream. He tried to survive, but because the cream was thick he

A Long Way Gone
A Long Way Gone
Ishmael Beah was an innocent boy who enjoyed playing football, swimming in the streams, and
even started a rap and dance group with his friends and older brother. The group discovered their
love for rap music from old cassette tapes of O.P.P, Run D.M.C, and the Sugarhill Gang. Ishmael
and Junior, along with their other friends cherished these few hip hop and rap cassette tapes. Ishmael
constantly carried these couple tapes on him at all times. They choreographed dance routines and
memorized all of the lyrics. The boys also entered a talent show in a close town. Ishmael, Junior,
Talloi, and Mohamed have been singing and dancing to rap music since they first formed the group
when Ishmael was only eight years old. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My friends and I even had battles against my older brother and his group of friends who literally
thought they were the real members of the boy band, N'Sync. This goes to show exactly how young
and innocent Ishmael and his friends really were.
Throughout the book, A Long Way Gone, rap music plays an extremely important role in saving
Ishmael's life. While the boys are traveling one day, a group of large, muscular men jump out from
the bushes, holding up their machetes and hunting rifles. These men are the voluntary guards of the
village and were ordered by their chief to bring Ishmael and his friends back to the village. They are
immediately tied up in the village and questioned. Even though the boys continue to insist they are
not rebel soldiers, the chief does not believe them. The chief would not believe the boys until they
discovered a rap cassette tape in Ishmael's pocket. The chief forces Ishmael to explain the rap music.
Ishmael was instructed to sing and dance to "O.P.P" by Naughty by Nature and "I Need Love" by LL
Cool J. The chief is still cautious of the boys until a young boy from the village admits to knowing
Ishmael and his friends. The boys are untied and the village surprisingly feeds them and even offers
them a place to stay. Knowing that the rebels will eventually come, the boys refuse the offer. At that
point in the book,

The Roles Of Men And Women Essay
The roles of men and women in society, though they vary slightly from culture to culture, have been
forged in such a way that that they have been ingrained in us, while being nothing more than a social
construct, and we appear to be unable to shake them. Although we do try to be accepting of change,
the very thought of an adjustment in our perceived gender roles typically results in a reaction that is
a cross between a cringe for some and a furrowed brow for others. When we happen upon an event
that threatens to change our views of how a man or a woman should behave, something miraculous
happens. We change almost instantly into a being that is primal, thoughts come bubbling up from
inside us as we involuntarily begin to correct anyone naïve enough to think that things can be
different. We lash out at the person responsible for the proposed shift in our perception, whether it is
through verbal communication or body language, we communicate that they have crossed the
proverbial line in the sand. We are taught from a young age that boys wear blue and girls wear pink,
we learn that boys play with trucks and tools and girls play with baby dolls, throughout or lives, we
are reminded of the many differences between males and females. Later, we learn that men are
doctors, lawyers, and bosses, and women are mothers, secretaries, and nurses. Men are in positions
of power and women are incapable of leading and making decisions and it's a man's place to decide
when and how a family

Archibald Cronin. Beyond This Place. Summary
"Beyond this place" is a novel written by Scottish author Archibald Cronin. The book was written in
1953. This detective story is about a brave man called Paul Marthy. He wanted to get his father out
of prison because he was jailed unfairly and was imprisoned for 15 years. Paul was a young man. He
was getting a teacher's education. He was a good student and a wonderful sportsman. He lived with
his mother, Mrs Burgess, in Belfast. She was quite unsociable and reserved. The first five years of
his life Paul had spent in the North of England. He had very good relations with his father, Rees;
they loved to spend time together. Later his family moved to Wortley. When they lived there, his
father died because of a railway accident. Soon after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The strangest thing was that Marthy never had one. He also said that the money bag belonged
neither to Mona, nor to Rees. This fact troubled Inspector Swann. So that man went to Mr Gillet, a
well–known lawyer, to talk about the case. Paul decided to find out what they had to say. He found
Swann in a hospital. Swann said that there were a few facts about the case which seemed strange to
him. For example, the wounds to Mona were so terrible that only a powerful man could have done
that, and Rees was not very strong. Again, Edward and Louisa at first gave the wrong description of
Rees, and later they changed their evidence. Swann also said that Collins went to New Zealand, but
Burt was still in the city and worked for a rich family called Oswalds. So Paul made up his mind to
become her friend in hope she would give him some useful information. By the way, Paul went to
George Birley, the Member of Parliament for Wortley. He believed that Birley would help him. He
tried to do so, but the Secretary of State refused to re–open the case. After seeing Louisa for a
couple of times she told him a few interesting things. For example, the fact that the murderer rode
off on a green bike was true. She knew that the murderer was a man who was a member of the
Grasshoppers' cycling club. He also studied anatomy and had a strange kind of money bag made of
human skin. Paul also found out that Mona was never interested in married man. Rees, on the
contrary, wasn't single. Moreover,

Personal Statement : Identity And Baggage Registration
After quickly finishing the process of Identity & Baggage Registration and some couple of random
security check points, I finally get to take a break from all that madness. Especially during the
screenings where a bunch of kids kept tripping & pushing me. I did wonder at some point where
their parents were and found out that the mom and dad were indeed a bunch of careless drunkards. I
was putting my things on the conveyer belt then everything went on a complete turn when the
children stuck gum on my hair. I got so furious that I chased the three of them down the hall and into
the different shops which caught the attention of the security guards and caused the parents to try
and knock down the guards.
To sum it all up, it was me chasing the children, me getting chased by security, and the security
being chased by the drunkards.
All of us did get sent to the office and I explained everything that happened. The parents did say
sorry to me for what their children did, though it was not sincere. Stressed from what happened, I
instantly head directly to the waiting area and sat in an open seat placing my bags in front of me.
I texted a bunch of my friends and played in my phone for a little while. Few minutes after, my
stomach suddenly grumbled so loud that I can assure that the lady beside me heard it. I tried to keep
my cool, but I eventually failed because I received a couple of stares from her.
Oh crap. I guess the food I bought earlier didn't fill me in that

Essay on Comparison of To His Coy Mistress and The Ruined...
Comparison of To His Coy Mistress and The Ruined Maid
'To His Coy Mistress' is written by Andrew Marvell in the 17th
Century. Marvell was one of the so–called metaphysical poets – a term of mild literary abuse coined
by Dr. Johnson. 'The Ruined Maid' was written by Thomas Hardy in 1866. It is important to analyse
the theme, language, tone, characters and style of both poems in order to compare and contrast them.
'To His Coy Mistress' is a lyric of seduction. It is about a young man who tries to persuade a young
girl to have sex with him. It seems that he has made an attempt but fails, because the girl is
unwilling to yield her virginity.
The poem is an example of a carpe diem poem – 'carpe diem' is Latin for 'seize the ... Show more

He reminds her that people will die and decay. Just like the paradox of time with his 'vegetable' love.
Time means growth but also decay. There is a sort of sadness in this section. He tells her that when
she gets old, her 'beauty' will fade, and then he will not chase her anymore. There is no point to keep
her 'virginity' till death. The grave is an image of decomposition. No one will have fun in the grave
and when people die, they will just return to 'dust' and 'ashes' – an echo of the funeral service, "Dust
to dust, ashes to ashes."
In the last section, he gives his solution and his conclusion. He is persuading her again to have sex
with him eagerly – 'Now let us sport us while we may'. While they are still young, let's grab the time
and do what we can before life decays. Here, it refers to 'carpe diem'– seize the day.
This poem rhymes in couplets– 'time/ crime'; 'way/ nday'. There is lots of hyperbole in the poem.
Marvell writes about the flood which refers to Noah's story belonging to Genesis in Bible. He talks
about the' conversion' of Jews. The conversion of Jews to Christianity would occur just before the
end of the world (time). These two religious references imply that his mistress could reject him for
all of the time without damaging his love for her.
There are metaphors in the poem. 'Vegetable love' – His love is like a vegetable, which

Summary : ' The Prairie ' Cowboys '
David Graf
Professor Chris Monier
English 1010
24 September 2015 Pave the Prairie: Cowboys in Manhattan As we charge headlong into the
twenty–first century, things have changed. Sweatshops are illegal, cars are a near necessity, and
more women now graduate college than men. The post–industrial era economy is flourishing in the
United States, but not everyone is flourishing in it. All across America coalmines are empty, railroad
spikes and sledgehammers are rusting, and straw cowboy hats slowly rot. Jobs once held by 'manly'
men are disappearing and, "for the first time in American history, the balance of the workforce
tipped towards women, who now hold a majority of the nation's jobs," (Rosin 475). When faced

These rules foster a certain type of man. One who takes charge and leads, one whose primary
concern is, "Being a Man Among Men," (Kimmel 464). However, it also creates a person who
suppresses his feelings in fear of being labeled as effeminate. The stigma dictates that attributes
typically associated with women are unmasculine, so as boys turn to men, "Along the way they
suppress all the feelings they associate with the maternal––compassion, nurturance, vulnerability,
dependency," (Kimmel 469). This pattern of suppression has not changed much in recent years.
Society still enforces the idea that men should be strong and stoic, when these traits are no longer
what are needed to be successful in the workforce.
Men are failing in school. While it may not be all men, as time progresses it has become apparent
that women dominate our school system when given equal opportunities to participate. Men are not
performing worse in school now compared to forty years ago, the problem is that they are not
performing better. If men found themselves with, "'their eyes glazed over,'" (Rosin 473) they once
could drop out, choose not to pursue a higher education, and enter the workforce through unionized
labor jobs that suited them much better. Today, these jobs are disintegrating, while, "Of the 15 job
categories projected to grow the most in the next decade in the U.S., all but two are occupied
primarily by women," (Rosin 475). Many men have not been able to adapt to this new world

Gender Roles in Alice Munro's Boys and Girls
In Alice Munro's short story "Boys and Girls," our narrator is a young farm girl on the verge of
puberty who is learning what it means to be a "girl." The story shows the differing gender roles of
boys and girls – specifically that women are the weaker, more emotional sex – by showing how the
adults of the story expect the children to grow into their respective roles as a girl and a boy, and how
the children grow up and ultimately begin to fulfill these roles, making the transition from being
"children" to being "young adults."
The adults in the story expect the children to grow into the gender role that their sex has assigned to
them. This is seen in several places throughout the story, such as when the narrator hears her mother

Neither child has an interest in the work of their parent of the same gender; Laird runs off to play
instead of helping with the foxes, and the narrator escapes from the kitchen the first chance she gets
(Munro 495). Later in the story, however, Laird begins to take an interest in the men's work of
hunting and killing the horse, and the narrator, while not yet embracing the work of her mother, is
disengaging herself from her father's work and turning toward the more feminine work of decorating
her room. Neither of them sing songs anymore, even though the narrator continued to enjoy it, Laird
said it "sounded silly," so she stopped (Munro 501); this is an example of both Laird becoming more
masculine, because he no longer wants to take part in frivolous things such as singing "Jingle Bells"
at night, and the narrator becoming more feminine, because she so easily bows to her brother's
opinion. Laird has started to accept the role of "leader" instead of just being "young and obedient,"
(Munro 499) and the narrator is taking other people's opinions into consideration when deciding her
actions, instead of just doing whatever she wants to do.
From the beginning to the end of the story, the narrator undergoes a transformation from a child of
the farm to a young woman. From my perspective, she does not start out as particularly masculine;
she is more of a blank slate that is trying to rebel against what she views as

The Comparison of the Road and Into the Wild Essay
The Comparisons of the Boys
Two popular novels that are read in English literature today are Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer and
The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Both these books share three valuable comparisons. One being that
both protagonists go on a self–evolving and physical journey, another that both the fathers in the
novel share demanding relationships with their sons, and the lessons that both boys learned. A
journey does not have to be simply walking through the woods. It can actually be a person going
through an internal transformation. In Into the Wild and The Road Chris McCandles and the young
boy go through their own transformations on their journey. The young boys matures over the course

Parents can have influencing decisions on children when they are still at a small age of being
dependent on others. All throughout The Road the father constantly tells his son the next route on
the journey, who to and to not trust, and decisions he must make. Ever since the day where the
whole world diminished the father began to map out of the route the two men would take leaving his
son with no room for his input. The father would never let his son be an open–minded individual
and get to know people for who they are. A prime example of this is when the men stumble open a
poor, old, dirty man sitting on the ground of their path with hardly any clothing on and his bone
deteriorating. The father believes the vagabond is trying to steal food and the son believes he truly
just needs help. The boy finds it in his heard to give the man a jar of peaches but his father is very
hesitant and insist that the boy must not continue speaking to the homeless man and too specifically
not ask him to dinner. The young boy crushed by his fathers ignorance and crude behavior begins to
see a change in his father and really trust if his father is trying to protect the both of them or just
scared of getting to know people. At the end of the story when the father passes away he passes on
the torch to his son to be able to make executive decisions and all of the

Richard Wright's Short Stories Richard was born, raised, and grew up in a difficult period of life.
However, when Wright was sixteen, a short story of his was published in a Southern African
American newspaper. After leaving high school, Wright worded a few odd jobs, but still showed his
true love for writing. In 1927, Wright decided to pack up his belongings and head to Chicago. A
short ten years later, Richard moved to New York City, where he was told it would be easier getting
published. One year later, Wright's first book was published. Since then, Wright has wrote a number
of books, series and short stories until he died in 1960. With that being said, Richard Wright's short
stories, The Man Who Was Almost A Man and Big Boy Leaves Home were both written to show
what coming with age and responsibility truly mean.

Summary Of ' The Strange Beach '
CHAPTER FOUR
As Dark As His Tar Black Soul
The strange beach was stifled as if the ghosts of notorious pirates maybe even Blackbeard himself
had come back to silence the coastline. My imagination was chuck full of childhood tales–I could
picture infamous pirates wielding silver cutlass swords and gallant king's men battling at sea, but the
sand was deserted and even the wind now held its breath. "Bro, we've fallen down the rabbit hole or
something. I know were not in Pixie Dust anymore . . . but where the heck are we Wonderland?"
Mason said in full meltdown mode. "And . . ." he glanced around like he had a twitch, "I saw a
flicker of movement in the water. Something's out there I can feel it, you hear me? I'll be fine
though–you cut out their tongues and stab them in the eyes, if they close!" I did my best to calm him
down. "Everything's okay. Mason there's no one here." I pointed to the glass like lilac–colored
water. Not even a seagull soared over the sea. There were just bursts of dappled light peppering the
air, reflections rippling across the deep. "Besides," I inhaled the brackish air trying to soothe my
nerves, "what am I going to stab them with, my finger?" Relax! Only serene thought are allow, I told
myself listening to the soothing sound of lapping waves gently caressed the coast. I repeated it like a
mantra twice then I saw something across the purple swells–the silhouette of a small unfamiliar tin–

A Day You Remember The Worst Thing
A Day to Remember
The worst thing that could happen to a child is getting embarrassed in front of their friends. As I sit
down and think about all the times I have been embarrassed only one period stands out as my most
embarrassing moment. That most embarrassing moment happen to be my 5th grade year.
I was the life of the party in 5th grade I stayed in something all the time it wasn't a day I didn't get in
trouble. I could get the class hyped at any time of the day it wasn't nothing for my friends and I to
disrupt the class. We would sing, dance, joke and etc. basically anything to make the class laugh or
the teacher mad. That all changed when I got a surprise visit from daddy. Boy was I happy to see
him not really though!
It all started December 2007 I was being me doing things I shouldn't such as talking, laughing, and
playing while the teacher was trying to teach. I was asked serval times to stop and pay attention but I
wasn't hearing that junk she was talking. I guess she just couldn't handle me that day so she yelled at
me and when I say nobody yells at me I mean just that. I don't know what was going through
Mrs.Mauney head but it wasn't the right thing home girl had done lost her mind but you know me I
gave her the business in that classroom in front of everybody. We was going back and forth then all
of a sudden her face begin to red and right then and there I knew for a fact my mission had been
complete. Child I made Mrs.Mauney cry and boy do I regret doing that.

Summary Of ' Lady Audra ' Essay
Lady Audra, age seventeen, raised her fists and braced her feet in the soil. "Step forward, you little
shit," she growled. "You can hit harder than that."
This was their typical routine, Audra and the teenage stable boy. In front of the horse paddock on
Audra's parents' estate, she and the young man often engaged in sword training and battle axe
exercises, but today, they used fists.
Audra loved combat training.
She stutter–stepped forward, her long red hair in a wild tangle around her face, bruises smarting on
her jaw from the recent blow she'd failed to block. However, the stable hand dropped his guard and
pointed over Audra's shoulder. She spun around and spotted her parents approaching on horseback.
Despite the heat of the day, they wore woolen cloaks that billowed behind them as they rode.
Formal. Always so formal.
"Ah, damn," she whispered, dropping her fists. "They're back early."
It was too late to change from her man's tunic and trousers, which were, incidentally, torn at the
knees and filthy. Why couldn't Audra's parents understand she liked learning to defend herself?
Besides, the stable boy was never all that rough. And why did being a woman mean one should not
stand up for herself, physically or otherwise?
"I am leaving. See you later, Audra."
The stable boy ran off, leaving Audra to face her parents, the cold Lady Ina and Lord Sior, alone.
Audra was their only child, and they'd never paid her any attention. Ina and Sior preferred traveling
and kissing the

In the past females have achieved less well than boys at higher levels in the education system, then
during the 1990', the girls over took boys at all levels in the education system. The percentage of

from 18% to 33%. On the other hand, there still continues to be a large difference in the choice of

However, its argued that the improvement of females in education could be the result of the decline
of males, therefore making the gap between gender differences not that significant.
Secondly, the interaction between teachers and male and female students. Sociologist Francis (2000)
argues that classrooms are still male dominated and that boys are disciplined more frequently and
harshly by teachers compared to girls. Therefore, it is seen that boys get more attention than girls as
they are disciplined more harshly than girls, leading to girls getting less attention than boys, also in
terms of ethnicity, boys from African Caribbean backgrounds are also more likely to be disciplined
than white British boys. This may result in boys feeling picked on in school which may result in
gender and ethnic differences in achievement.
On the other hand, many sociologists have argued the importance of external factors in influencing
gender differences in achievement. Feminism strives for equality in society for men and women and
has questioned the typical role of males and females in society and challenges the role of women
being the housewife. Feminists have had a great influence on improving girls self–esteem and
aspirations. Sue Sharpe's

“Beauty (Re) Discovers the Male Body” Essay examples
"Beauty (Re) Discovers the Male Body" response In "Beauty (Re) Discovers the Male Body" by
Susan Bordo, Bordo writes an analysis on the male body in advertising. Bordo discusses how in the
society of advertising and fashion the male body isn't really seen as a symbol of arousal compared to
the female body. She continues saying how the naked or half–naked female body is seen as "an
object of mainstream consumption" (p.299), while the male boy is just beginning to be a
"commercial representation" (p.299) object. She also talks about how the percentage of people
viewing these pictures with half–naked males mainly only increased in the male percentage of
viewers instead of the females. Bordo continues by adding how women feel the need ... Show more

The sources help to show how looking thin and muscular or fit is the popular trend. She explains
that advertisements and movies have changed to fit the trend and that she wishes the male body
would look more natural rather than a sex object. In Bordo's opinion the male body should be less
sexual and more natural. Although this is a plausible argument I believe that men in the ads should
continue to appear as "sex objects" (p.312). It would allow men to strive to look like what the ads
show. It will also motivate the men of our society to be fit. Bordo also believes that men get aroused
by the ads of men in underwear more than women but nowadays a lot of women get aroused by
half–naked men. Women do actually "survey" (p.303) men more than she thinks they do. Women
like to read or look at pictures with men toned, tan and sexy and fantasize about them. Bordo uses
primary and secondary sources from multiple companies to prove her argument that men rather than
be seen as sexy macho men they rather be seen for how the really look. She also touches upon how
society has changed in media fashion and advertisement concerning the male body from just females
just being the only ones in ads to male and females and how it affects females in society

Media's Effect on Teen Body Image Essay
Media's Effect On Teens and Their Body Images
Through out society many teens and young women have been scrutinized for their bodies and
appearance. Media is one of the leading contributor. Media has led to the sexualization and body
image issues in teens and women. As the media idealizes women as a miniature size 0 with long
blonde hair and blue eyes, it leads to the loss in self esteem. Every girl wants to look like Megan
Fox, with her great body and good facial structure. Reality is we can't all look like that and it's what
women, call "winning the genetic lottery".
So what about media changes the view of women on themselves and their bodies? Research has

Being a thin man is not seen as a being optimal. "On average, boys believe they are good looking,
and girls are unsure" said Melissa Milkie, assistant professor of sociology at the University of
Maryland.(Mullen J.2) Girls see themselves due to media, as never being good enough. They tend to
be unsure of themselves as women they idolize change themselves with the stipulations of media.
Young Women tend to feel that if they are not as skinny and beautiful as the women portrayed on
television that they will be bullied or harassed by peers, for the lack of not following the rules of an
"ideal" society. Bullying has become a large factor between peers over body image. It is what is
called "The Mean Girls Effect". Students are harassed by their peers because their are not the same
size as them. Body image at a young age changes the outlook on young teens futures. If they are
slightly overweight they are seen as "pudgy" or "thick". Peer judgement is destructive to the self
satisfaction of female adolescents. Many girls do not perceive their bodies as normal because of
unrealistic, extremely thin images illustrated in the media. Reality is that the impractical images
portrayed on the internet and in media has changed the "real" image of what women appear to be.
"Even though most girls realize these images are unrealistic, they nevertheless feel constrained by
these standards because they believe it's what their peers, and especially men hold up as

The Dark Forest Of Black Rock Essay
Ayland rode his horse around the deep forest circling the Hedgeknorey's castle, in black rock. He
carefully led his horse down a path within the evergreen forest of black rock, covered with pine
trees, but also with oak and elder trees.
He has been around this path many times before and maybe even too much as the curious souls
began to wonder why a boy of such a noble status would wander in the deep forest of black rock.
Not a lot of people spent time in forests, at least not too far away from the main rocky road, made
for horses, merchandises, and peasants on foot. People would not wander too far in the forest,
because of the obvious fear of wild animals, especially during winter. But they were also avoiding
another threat. And that threat was a human threat also known as Willem the Druid, who was a
feared and at the same time a much–venerated man because of his knowledge of medicine and
herbs. He was also rumored to know magic, and this was perhaps what made him such a dreadful
person.
But Ayland had this thing about him; which was that he feared no one since he was also certain that
he was to become King, one day. This assertion was not born out of a pretentious, motherly molded

Comparing my Local Grocery Store to Walmart
For this assignment, I decided to go to a grocery store by my house named Meijer. Meijer is just like
any other grocery store, similar to Wal–Mart, yet higher quality products than Wal–Mart. The
clothing for both boys and girls sections are close together. I noticed that there are articles of
clothing that are similar for boys and girls, but they are called different names to make them more
masculine or feminine. For example, shirts for girls are called fashion tops and just shirts for boys.
Some patterns that I saw in the clothing/toys is that for almost each advertisement or label had a
picture of a boy or a girl to indicate which toy or clothing is meant for which gender. I did find some
things that I thought were unusual. One thing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other factors are how kids play with each other, their peers they are surrounded by, and the media.
Males tend to be more physical when they play indicating that they are more aggressive than
females are. Both males and females play different sports than females. An instance would be
football, soccer, and wrestling, compared to cheerleading, gymnastics, and volleyball for the girls.
Football, soccer, and wrestling are a more physical contact sport than cheerleading, gymnastics or
volleyball are. Peers is also another part for socialization because the way boys or girls act around
each other. Children follow by example, so if they see their friends doing something, they will most
likely follow. As children get older, peers plays a bigger part in influencing children to act a certain
way according to society and other peers. Lastly, the media is additionally has a huge impression on
how kids should act and look. The commercials for children on T.V. convince children what they
should be playing with, who they should be playing with, how they should look, and how they
should act. It is very rare to see girls playing Legos or hot wheels in commercials. The same is for
boys, commercials do not promote boys playing with and accessorizing with Barbie dolls. Some
clothes that are deemed to be gender neutral are certain types of shirts and shoes. An example of a

The Death Of A Soft Sigh
With a soft sigh, the teenaged rebel rests his back against the rough tree and twirls the green piece of
hay between his lips. An elderly woman and a child around seven pass under the branch, completely
unaware that they are being watched. A smirk crosses the brunette youth 's face as the small child
runs off the path and into the woods.
"Maniko! Boy, get back here!" The woman scolds her giggling grandson.
The grumbling duo eventually continue their way down the road towards Ba Sing Se. After they 're

"Okay, Jet." The three nod before turning away and silently heading back to the camp.

The Male And Female Gender Through Life Experiences
Matthew Drozd
How Do We Know What Gender We Are? Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando, and Thomas Page
McBee's memoir, Man Alive, aim to define the male and female gender through life experiences.
Virginia Woolf uses the eponymous protagonist, Orlando, to define the freedom that men have
within society while women face many societal restrictions. Within Man Alive, Thomas, a
transgendered man, experiences similar freedoms and restrictions that Orlando experiences through
his experiences within society. Man Alive is the journey of Thomas Page McBee's transition from
woman to man; it focuses not on his physical change but on his mental change. Orlando was placed
in a predicament that allowed him to experience life both as man and woman. The first thirty years
of Orlando's life was spent as a man then he was permanently transformed into a woman. Almost
parallel to Orlando's transition experience, Thomas was also in a predicament that allowed him to
experience life as a man and woman. Thomas, born Page, goes through a transition to become male.
Orlando and Thomas both aimed at trying to figure out who they were in society; Thomas was
trying to find what kind of man he wanted to become and Orlando was trying to find what kind of
woman she was becoming. For example, if female Orlando was promiscuous, she would be heavily
criticized by her community while male Orlando received no censure. Man Alive focused, not on the
criticism that Thomas received but, on the characteristics of men via

Why I Didn 't Be Public Enemy
When I had arrived at school the following day sitting next to Dale in his hot rod and wearing his

Short Story The river was roaring past the children and their teacher, as the group of kids tried in
vain to understand the teacher's inaudible mutterings. Not one of them could understand or
comprehend what the teacher was saying, and being the lively, uncontrollable brats that they were,
they didn't care anyway. When the teacher stopped talking, he motioned for the children to follow
him along the steep, mud–covered banks of the river. The children understood this and scuttled after
him, along the dangerous route that he had selected for them.

The Night of Fire
The Night (Fire engine, boys, rain)
April 24th, 2012; the sound of the news on the television hums in the background drowned out by
people talking and laughing. Fire Station 141 is buzzing with life; everything is in calm and
peaceful; when suddenly a loud screaming sound rings through the brick walls. All of the men in the
station startle to attention and rush around in organized chaos. The shuffling of boots on the smooth
concrete floors and ruffling of thick fire suits is drowned out by the resounding alarm. The men pile
into the large red trucks and screech out of the station. The alarm becomes silent and the station is
abandoned and the only sound it the news humming in the background. The men hardly fit in the
small quarters of the truck. The smell of burnt rubber and gasoline fill the cramped space. The sirens
atop the thick metal roof of the truck bounce back and forth on houses and cars nearby. Dark clouds
start to form above the speeding truck and soon the rain is playing a soft beat on the roof. The cold
weather creates a pale fog against the window. Everything starts to slow down and become faded,
the dark night outside the window now is everywhere and a group of boys are playing baseball. The
ball is a dirty cream color and is throwing off water as it spins through the air, then smack it hits a
leather glove with an explosion of water up into a young boy's smiling face. There is a newspaper on
the ground that is soaked but the date says April 24th, 1986.

Book Review : Father And Sons By Ivan Turgenev
Bazarov v. Pavel
Father and Sons by Ivan Turgenev is about two young men returning home from college. In the
beginning readers are introduced to Arkady a young man whom on his journey home to his father
has brought his friend, Bazarov. From the first meeting Arkady's family is a little suspicious of
Bazarov and have many questions for him and about him. Conversation did not start between the
men until the next morning at breakfast. Nikolai (Arkadys father) had a few things to say but the
real debate happened between Pavel (Arkadys uncle) throughout the early chapters.
Bazarov is an interesting character is because it is made known that he is a Nihilist. Nihilism
according to definition means a few things, "total rejection of established laws and institutions." or,
"An extreme form of skepticism; the denial of all real existence or the possibility of an objective
basis for truth." (Dictionary.com) The first example Bazarov shows of his Nihilism is his
interactions with a young boy over a frog. The young boy is fascinated by this frog but Bazarov
wants it purely to cut open for research purposes. The boy tries to explain to Bazarov that the frog is
just a frog but Bazarov does not agree. He believes there is more to learn by cutting open a frog.
Bazarov and his Nihilism makes the relationship between him and Arkadys uncle, Pavel an
interesting one. After their first meeting Bazarov makes a few comments to Arkady, "What an
oddball of an uncle you've got!" (Turgenev 17) He

Memory Of Dylan Hart. Born Essay
In memory of Dylan Hart. Born: May 4th, 1980. Died: April 22nd, 1991 of Leukemia. I graze my
fingers over the lustrous gold letters that were engraved on the plaque with the photograph of the
contented young boy whose eyes looked so full of life. I never experienced a loss of someone I
loved, and as I look up at the boy in the baseball cap I was longing to know how loss felt. I longed
to feel the worst kind of pain, not for the pleasure, but to know that no feeling in the world can be
worse. Unexpectedly arriving and disrupting my days with excruciating feelings of terror and pain
were daymares. The unexplainable became an ordinary to my middle–school self; however, I never
got accustomed to the unnerving dreams themselves. Experiencing the pain of death meant that I
would be ready for what were agonizing feelings I endured in my dreams, but I would not know
until later on that I was a naive child who asked and received too much to bear. I took a step back
and looked up at the brick wall that ended abruptly between the wooden plaque and our school
mascot: the black panther. I looked longingly as if in the back of my mind I knew there was
something missing. "I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream...", The song was playing in
my head softly but distinctly enough that only I could hear it, like in a horror movie. My eyes started
to move slowly, and I was looking at my surroundings. I felt nauseous and started to sense every
little thing that moved. The tiny bug that

The father figure depicted in this story could be viewed in a few different ways. At first I thought the
authors father was kind of a stuck up, rude man, who was sour about the advantages of living a
normal life in American society. I felt that he had made his son feel like he could never do what he
had down. If a parental figure makes you feel like that, there tends to be a reaction. It could be
positive or negative. In Rodriguez's case he took what his father said, and harnessed it into a positive
learning experience. When I thought about more in depth, it became clear that Rodriguez's father
wasn't putting his son down at all. He was simply explaining to his son how different their worlds
where. He was stressing that although his son had more opportunity, and was presented with much
greater potential to be excellent, that the work he did growing up was much harder, and tough than
most people realize. His father was just making it known that in his working years he did not have
many options as to career choices. But on the other hand I can easily see why the author felt that his
father had challenged him. Much like I felt my father was challenging me. Rodriguez felt like he
needed to prove that he could perform the same task that his fathers use to do to provide for their
families. Working with you're your hands, completing messy, strenuous, sometimes painful jobs was
almost a part of Hispanic culture. A part of

Analysis Of James Joyce 's Araby
"Illusion is an anodyne, bred by the gap between wish and reality" said by Herman Wouk. Many
times in life, people set unrealistic expectations for themselves or for other people. This is not a very
wise thing to do because people often feel disappointed and embarrassed for getting their hopes up
so high. In James Joyce's short story "Araby" he uses the voice of a young boy as a narrator and
describes his childhood growing up in Dublin. Joyce concentrates on description of character's
feeling rather than on plot to reveal the ironies inherent in self–deception. The story focuses on the
disappointment, and enlightenment of the young boy and the gap between ideality and reality which
I believe it is a retrospective of Joyce's look back at life.
On the simplest level, "Araby" is a story about a young boy's first love and his quest for the ideal.
He has a crush on his friend's sister and his quest to fulfill a promise he made to her. The promise
that is made is that he will bring her a present from Araby, a bazaar. He is granted permission from
his uncle; however his uncle comes home late on the day of the bazaar making it hard for the boy to
get to Araby before it close. When he finally arrives he discovers it is too late to buy anything. Thus,
the quest ends in failure. On the deeper level, the failure results in an inner awareness and a first step
into adult world. The protagonist faces up the harsh reality for which his precious experience has not
prepared for him. The

Is Diotima A Man Not A Woman?
Most people believe the argument that Diotima is a woman is true solely because she is not a man.
However, I find that there are other arguments that are capable of proving that Diotima is indeed a
man, not a woman. To be able to explain my theory in an understandable manner, I must clearly
illustrate gender roles in Ancient Greece. When it comes to women's roles in Ancient Greece, it is
safe to conclude that they were simply a symbol of inferiority when compared to men. I'll list a few
things women were not legally able to do: inherit property, appear in court, or give evidence under
oath. As a matter of fact, women were not even able to commit the majority of the crimes in Ancient
Greece because they were barely ever found in public. And if there happened to be an issue within
the family, it was handled either by the father or the husband because they were the legal guardians
of women. Boys went to school earlier than girls, because this society felt that men are the
intellectuals. Domestically, women were to nurture their children. Now, let's compare this to the role
of men in Ancient Greece. Men came home from work and lay on their couches as they were fed
and entertained. They were given utmost respect in the house and in their society for they were
deemed to be most important. This is all part of misogyny that is well grounded in Ancient Greece.
With this background, I argue that Diotima is not a woman because the likeliness of the men to
listen to her in this society

The Experience Of A Volunteer
The past two summers I was fortunate enough to go on two mission trips with my church. Our group
teamed together with other churches and we worked with the Carolina Missions Team or known as
"CMT". This past summer was defiantly an eye–opening experience for me being able to work with
an underprivileged community. One of the things I learned and realized during this trip is that even
though these people have very little of anything, they are still so willing to give other people they
don't know so much love and compassion. Having this opportunity to volunteer has made me more
aware of the needs, not just for the people in our own country, but also those in other countries who
have much worse circumstances. The experience has led me to want to reach out to those other
countries. Hopefully one day being able to travel and give them the help, knowledge, information
and hope they need to prosper. We went to Knoxville, Tennessee and we worked at a Boys and Girls
in the projects. When my small group (missions group) got to the Boys and Girls club we first
looked around at the type of environment and we instantly realized that these kids weren't in the of
best homes. This Boys and Girls club was the only one that was free unlike the rest of them in the
area. One of the adults in my missions group pointed out a six–year–old boy walking the streets

The Power Of The Grotesque
The Power of the Grotesque in Literature It is often said that beauty is within the eye of its beholder.
A statement this broad, begs the question, "what is the true definition of beauty?" Writers such as
Sherwood Anderson and Thomas Mann depict the beauty of life through the usage of the grotesque.
The grotesque is used to reveal the absolute truth and reality of humanity. However, no matter how
terrifying these truths may be, it is evident that the messages depicted and the passion evoked
through them are truly beautiful. Winesburg, Ohio is a collection of short stories by Sherwood
Anderson. The episodic stories have a wide range of character types and messages and yet, they all
share the common theme of the grotesque. Similarly, Death in Venice the novella by Thomas Mann
follows a burdened artist, Gustave Aschenbach who struggles with repressed desires that are slowly
liberated throughout the story. Both Anderson and Mann use the grotesque to explain the true nature
of society, their characters, and to evoke emotion from their readers especially through the theme of
obsession.
In order to truly understand the grotesque and its usage, readers must first know its complex history,
meaning, and usage. Due to its wide range of usage, the definition of grotesque changed numerous
times throughout history. In literary uses, it can be defined as an "expression of the estranged or
alienated world...an attempt to control and exorcise the demonic elements in the world" (Thomson).

Correlation Between Males And Females On Average
The goal of this paper is to determine who is more motivated between males and females on average
in reading. In one study females were considered more motivated and exhibited higher mastery in
reading. There were several factors that contributed to this conclusion, some being biological and
distinctly different from gender to gender. Boys were usually assessed as less developed mentally
and developing in different sequences as their female counterparts. The corpus callosum was 20%
bigger in females than males. These connect the two hemispheres of the brain. Couple this with
these facts together explains why females tend to be better communicators than males. Boys

There have been mixed results on how it affects children's motivation and achievement. The results
from the study suggest that praising children can reduce disruptive behavior in class and stimulate
learning. It was difficult to narrow the result of this achievement to the praise itself or to teacher's
attention and special privileges. At the time of this publication no study has isolated the effects of
praise by itself with this type and setting. Praise has been noted to be varied and exhibit different
results at times praise has had an adverse effect on learning while in other settings it has been a great
catalyst. One study suggests that praise directed at an activity rather than a person can be a factor for
the different outcomes observed. That praising on activity gives specific insight to overcoming
problems and is beneficial for future situation that will require problem solving skills. The reason
for this maybe that children don't always experience success and personal praise will have the
opposite affect at this point. They will begin to equate non–success with being incompetent, bad and
unworthy. Studies suggest that females maybe more at risk for the adverse effects of personal praise
following setback or failures. Research has found that females tend to accept evaluative feedback
more so than males. They perceive this feedback as an accurate reflection of their abilities, while
males rely more on their internal belief of their abilities. In a

Essay about Company of Wolves-Little Red Riding Hood
Little Red Riding Hood
"The Company of Wolves" by Angela Carter is very similar to "Little Red Riding Hood", the little
girl heading out with a basket full of liquor and goodies for her grandmother. The wolf stopping her
on her way to the grandmother's house; the wolf races to the house, eats the grandma, pretends to be
the grandma and makes "Little Red Riding Hood" believe that he is her grandma. He pounces on her
and tries to eat her but a hunter comes and kills the wolf and saves the grandma. The story reveals an

characters portray these roles very similar to the way we view gender roles today. Carter uses the

We could assume that every wolf was once a man. At the beginning Carter explains how wolves are
"carnivore incarnate and he's cunning and ferocious", but yet she also explains how "melancholy" a
wolf can be because "the beasts would love to be less beastly if only they knew how" (110, 112).
Everyone seems to be afraid of these wolves "fear and flee the wolf; for, worst of all, the wolf may
be more then he seems" which could mean that the wolf isn't necessarily after fresh meat but that he
just wants sex. The wolf only sees women as meat. It kind of reminds me of "The Wedding Singer"
where Glenn grades his women with the FDA system, for example if he thought a woman was top of
the line he would say that she was Grade A, top choice meat. At the end of the story, the wolf seems
to be put in his place by the girl because she doesn't fear him and when he tries to frighten her with
telling her he's going to eat her, she just laughs at him and rips off his clothes. Many stereotypes
have men portrayed as beasts that crave sexual encounters and as creatures that only think about sex
which Carter seems to do with the wolves. Women are seen as innocent and virtuous individuals that
are only spoiled by men.

Sammy as a Representation of a Misunderstood Generation in...
John Updike presents us in his story A&P, through Sammy's actions, the protest of young and
misunderstood generation which he sees in his story, as rebellious and visionless by older generation
for which all that does not obey to society's standards is unusual, unaccepted, and accentuated by the
fineness of details and nuances, a deep insight intuition of choosing revealing moments of 1960's, in
which sexuality was taboo. With this Updike is announcing a big change in the culture, and of the
times that he noticed it as such, expressing better through his writing, and presenting Sammy – his
protagonist– which wants to be noticed along with signs of anxiety and insecurities, but follows his
instincts which are recorded in a universe where his actions are completely different from what other

Updike's description each feeling Sammy, a 19 year old, has which is working in a market store. He

The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
The Man, The Boy, and the remains of a dead world are the only constants the reader will know as
they make their journey down "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. The novel tells a story of the
nameless protagonists as they traverse through a post–apocalyptic land in an attempt to reach the
warm coast before winter. McCarthy's story also covers many dark and heavy topics – primarily
death. He has said himself that death especially is a major issue in the world, and that writers who
do not address it are not serious. As a man of his word, McCarthy has written "The Road" with
imagery and metaphor alluding to how death stays as a heavy presence even after it has done its
work. The book's dystopia is a result of all of the worst faults of humanity, ... Show more content on

McCarthy also tends to avoid any assignment of speech; one does not know who is speaking
because McCarthy has explicitly written that The Boy or The Man has said it, if the reader cannot
understand who is saying what then the writer has not done their job. He sees no need for complex
and elaborate constructions of literature when words on their own can be simple yet profound in
delivery in messages. I specifically chose to read this book because McCarthy is the opposite of
myself. I thoroughly respect this ability in him. While I might find other authors like Poe who do the
(stark) opposite to be more entertaining, I cannot deny that there is something so remarkable about
an author who can manage something so beautiful and direct – naked writing. It demonstrates the
depth of thought and careful consideration that went into each word.
McCarthy's approach to storytelling, simple yet definitive, conveys far more than what is printed on
paper. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the use of metaphor within descriptions of setting does the
same. Many times throughout the story are trees mentioned. At first, the frequency may seem
peculiar – it is always yellowing dead trees that are mentioned, and this initially serves to reveal to
the reader that an unknown apocalypse has basically killed the earth and most of its flora. However,
the constant presence of the dead trees is also a reminder that even though death has come and gone
the skeletons it leaves behind will

Comparing The Novel ' Out, Out And ' Disabled '
Compare the ways in which the writers create sympathy in 'Out, Out –'and 'Disabled'
In the poems, Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen both create sympathy for the characters through
different ways. In 'Disabled', Owen paints a vivid, moving picture of a soldier who has been injured
in World War One and lost his legs and an arm. Wilfred Owen himself took part in the war,
consequently witnessing first hand many young men whose lives were similarly destroyed. In the
poem, 'Out, Out', Robert Frost shows the fragility of life in two ways. Firstly alluding to
Shakespeare's metaphor in 'Macbeth's soliloquy' – 'Out, out, brief candle', which informs the reader
that life is very short and fragile. Moreover, Frost looks at the themes of sudden death and child
labour to help to make this a very sad and shocking poem. The poem reflects the tragedy of the
accidental death of a child doing a man's job. Frost's description of setting, imagery, and tone create
a moving poem with a horrifying ending that leaves the reader feeling despaired at the bleakness of
the situation and quite shocked.
Even in the structure of the poem, Wilfred Owen shows us a compassionate portrait of loss by
switching between and comparing the soldier's experiences 'before' and 'after' war time, and the
related memories and emotions, for instance:
"And girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim–
In old times, before he threw away his knees".
This example shows the constant comparison and reminder of the soldier's loss

The Newest Powered Commercial By Coca Cola Co.

  • 1. The Newest Powered Commercial By Coca Cola Co. Every professional athlete has his own story which made him as we see him now. Some Journeys were more difficult than others. However, the common keywords between all of them are the hard work and determination. Coca–Cola Co.'s PowerAde started its campaign "Just a kid" in the beginning of last year. PowerAde has used inspirational stories of professional athlete, who used to have a very hard start and they made their path into fame and success, to deliver a message to everyone that no one has chosen his start but we all can decide our termination. The newest powered commercial tells the story of Seattle Seahawk football player Jimmy Graham, who had a very tough upbringing in a group house in North Carolina to a superstar in the NFL. This paper is going to analyze that commercial and dive inside it to get deep meaning and catch the subtle message beyond its scenes. One of the meanings of this commercial is demonstrating the notion of the American dream. The mythical believe that anyone can start from the bottom and by continuing hard work, he can achieve his goal and attain wealth and possible fame. This meaning has been shown at the beginning of the commercial when it is opened on Jimmy Graham as a boy enters the Goldsboro community orphanage in North Carolina where he has been beaten up and bullied by other older boys. While that happens, the narrator was telling the story of a mouse who fell in a bucket of cream. He tried to survive, but because the cream was thick he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Long Way Gone A Long Way Gone Ishmael Beah was an innocent boy who enjoyed playing football, swimming in the streams, and even started a rap and dance group with his friends and older brother. The group discovered their love for rap music from old cassette tapes of O.P.P, Run D.M.C, and the Sugarhill Gang. Ishmael and Junior, along with their other friends cherished these few hip hop and rap cassette tapes. Ishmael constantly carried these couple tapes on him at all times. They choreographed dance routines and memorized all of the lyrics. The boys also entered a talent show in a close town. This goes to show exactly how young and innocent Ishmael and his friends really were. Throughout the book, A Long Way Gone, rap music plays an extremely important role in saving Ishmael's life. While the boys are traveling one day, a group of large, muscular men jump out from the bushes, holding up their machetes and hunting rifles. These men are the voluntary guards of the village and were ordered by their chief to bring Ishmael and his friends back to the village. They are immediately tied up in the village and questioned. Even though the boys continue to insist they are not rebel soldiers, the chief does not believe them. The chief would not believe the boys until they discovered a rap cassette tape in Ishmael's pocket. The chief forces Ishmael to explain the rap music. Ishmael was instructed to sing and dance to "O.P.P" by Naughty by Nature and "I Need Love" by LL Cool J. The chief is still cautious of the boys until a young boy from the village admits to knowing Ishmael and his friends. The boys are untied and the village surprisingly feeds them and even offers them a place to stay. Knowing that the rebels will eventually come, the boys refuse the offer. • 5. The Roles Of Men And Women Essay The roles of men and women in society, though they vary slightly from culture to culture, have been forged in such a way that that they have been ingrained in us, while being nothing more than a social construct, and we appear to be unable to shake them. Although we do try to be accepting of change, the very thought of an adjustment in our perceived gender roles typically results in a reaction that is a cross between a cringe for some and a furrowed brow for others. When we happen upon an event that threatens to change our views of how a man or a woman should behave, something miraculous happens. We change almost instantly into a being that is primal, thoughts come bubbling up from inside us as we involuntarily begin to correct anyone naïve enough to think that things can be different. We lash out at the person responsible for the proposed shift in our perception, whether it is through verbal communication or body language, we communicate that they have crossed the proverbial line in the sand. We are taught from a young age that boys wear blue and girls wear pink, we learn that boys play with trucks and tools and girls play with baby dolls, throughout or lives, we are reminded of the many differences between males and females. Later, we learn that men are doctors, lawyers, and bosses, and women are mothers, secretaries, and nurses. This detective story is about a brave man called Paul Marthy. He wanted to get his father out of prison because he was jailed unfairly and was imprisoned for 15 years. Paul was a young man. He was getting a teacher's education. He was a good student and a wonderful sportsman. He lived with his mother, Mrs Burgess, in Belfast. She was quite unsociable and reserved. He also said that the money bag belonged neither to Mona, nor to Rees. This fact troubled Inspector Swann. So that man went to Mr Gillet, a well–known lawyer, to talk about the case. Paul decided to find out what they had to say. He found Swann in a hospital. Swann said that there were a few facts about the case which seemed strange to him. For example, the wounds to Mona were so terrible that only a powerful man could have done that, and Rees was not very strong. Again, Edward and Louisa at first gave the wrong description of Rees, and later they changed their evidence. Swann also said that Collins went to New Zealand, but Burt was still in the city and worked for a rich family called Oswalds. So Paul made up his mind to become her friend in hope she would give him some useful information. By the way, Paul went to George Birley, the Member of Parliament for Wortley. He believed that Birley would help him. He tried to do so, but the Secretary of State refused to re–open the case. After seeing Louisa for a couple of times she told him a few interesting things. For example, the fact that the murderer rode off on a green bike was true. She knew that the murderer was a man who was a member of the Grasshoppers' cycling club. He also studied anatomy and had a strange kind of money bag made of human skin. Paul also found out that Mona was never interested in married man. Rees, on the contrary, wasn't single. Moreover, ... • 11. Essay on Comparison of To His Coy Mistress and The Ruined... Comparison of To His Coy Mistress and The Ruined Maid 'To His Coy Mistress' is written by Andrew Marvell in the 17th Century. Marvell was one of the so–called metaphysical poets – a term of mild literary abuse coined by Dr. Johnson. 'The Ruined Maid' was written by Thomas Hardy in 1866. It is important to analyse the theme, language, tone, characters and style of both poems in order to compare and contrast them. 'To His Coy Mistress' is a lyric of seduction. It is about a young man who tries to persuade a young girl to have sex with him. It seems that he has made an attempt but fails, because the girl is unwilling to yield her virginity. The poem is an example of a carpe diem poem – 'carpe diem' is Latin for 'seize the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He reminds her that people will die and decay. Just like the paradox of time with his 'vegetable' love. Time means growth but also decay. There is a sort of sadness in this section. He tells her that when she gets old, her 'beauty' will fade, and then he will not chase her anymore. There is no point to keep her 'virginity' till death. The grave is an image of decomposition. No one will have fun in the grave and when people die, they will just return to 'dust' and 'ashes' – an echo of the funeral service, "Dust to dust, ashes to ashes." In the last section, he gives his solution and his conclusion. He is persuading her again to have sex with him eagerly – 'Now let us sport us while we may'. While they are still young, let's grab the time and do what we can before life decays. Here, it refers to 'carpe diem'– seize the day. This poem rhymes in couplets– 'time/ crime'; 'way/ nday'. There is lots of hyperbole in the poem. Marvell writes about the flood which refers to Noah's story belonging to Genesis in Bible. He talks about the' conversion' of Jews. The conversion of Jews to Christianity would occur just before the end of the world (time). These two religious references imply that his mistress could reject him for all of the time without damaging his love for her. There are metaphors in the poem. Summary : ' The Prairie ' Cowboys ' David Graf Professor Chris Monier English 1010 24 September 2015 Pave the Prairie: Cowboys in Manhattan As we charge headlong into the twenty–first century, things have changed. Sweatshops are illegal, cars are a near necessity, and more women now graduate college than men. The post–industrial era economy is flourishing in the United States, but not everyone is flourishing in it. All across America coalmines are empty, railroad spikes and sledgehammers are rusting, and straw cowboy hats slowly rot. Jobs once held by 'manly' men are disappearing and, "for the first time in American history, the balance of the workforce tipped towards women, who now hold a majority of the nation's jobs," (Rosin 475). When faced with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These rules foster a certain type of man. One who takes charge and leads, one whose primary concern is, "Being a Man Among Men," (Kimmel 464). However, it also creates a person who suppresses his feelings in fear of being labeled as effeminate. The stigma dictates that attributes typically associated with women are unmasculine, so as boys turn to men, "Along the way they suppress all the feelings they associate with the maternal––compassion, nurturance, vulnerability, dependency," (Kimmel 469). This pattern of suppression has not changed much in recent years. Society still enforces the idea that men should be strong and stoic, when these traits are no longer what are needed to be successful in the workforce. Men are failing in school. While it may not be all men, as time progresses it has become apparent that women dominate our school system when given equal opportunities to participate. Men are not performing worse in school now compared to forty years ago, the problem is that they are not performing better. If men found themselves with, "'their eyes glazed over,'" (Rosin 473) they once could drop out, choose not to pursue a higher education, and enter the workforce through unionized labor jobs that suited them much better. Today, these jobs are disintegrating, while, "Of the 15 job categories projected to grow the most in the next decade in the U.S., all but two are occupied primarily by women," (Rosin 475). • 15. Gender Roles in Alice Munro's Boys and Girls In Alice Munro's short story "Boys and Girls," our narrator is a young farm girl on the verge of puberty who is learning what it means to be a "girl." The story shows the differing gender roles of boys and girls – specifically that women are the weaker, more emotional sex – by showing how the adults of the story expect the children to grow into their respective roles as a girl and a boy, and how the children grow up and ultimately begin to fulfill these roles, making the transition from being "children" to being "young adults." The adults in the story expect the children to grow into the gender role that their sex has assigned to them. This is seen in several places throughout the story, such as when the narrator hears her mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Neither child has an interest in the work of their parent of the same gender; Laird runs off to play instead of helping with the foxes, and the narrator escapes from the kitchen the first chance she gets (Munro 495). Later in the story, however, Laird begins to take an interest in the men's work of hunting and killing the horse, and the narrator, while not yet embracing the work of her mother, is disengaging herself from her father's work and turning toward the more feminine work of decorating her room. Neither of them sing songs anymore, even though the narrator continued to enjoy it, Laird said it "sounded silly," so she stopped (Munro 501); this is an example of both Laird becoming more masculine, because he no longer wants to take part in frivolous things such as singing "Jingle Bells" at night, and the narrator becoming more feminine, because she so easily bows to her brother's opinion. Laird has started to accept the role of "leader" instead of just being "young and obedient," (Munro 499) and the narrator is taking other people's opinions into consideration when deciding her actions, instead of just doing whatever she wants to do. From the beginning to the end of the story, the narrator undergoes a transformation from a child of the farm to a young woman. • 17. The Comparison of the Road and Into the Wild Essay The Comparisons of the Boys Two popular novels that are read in English literature today are Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer and The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Both these books share three valuable comparisons. One being that both protagonists go on a self–evolving and physical journey, another that both the fathers in the novel share demanding relationships with their sons, and the lessons that both boys learned. A journey does not have to be simply walking through the woods. It can actually be a person going through an internal transformation. In Into the Wild and The Road Chris McCandles and the young boy go through their own transformations on their journey. The young boys matures over the course of his journey with his changing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parents can have influencing decisions on children when they are still at a small age of being dependent on others. All throughout The Road the father constantly tells his son the next route on the journey, who to and to not trust, and decisions he must make. Ever since the day where the whole world diminished the father began to map out of the route the two men would take leaving his son with no room for his input. The father would never let his son be an open–minded individual and get to know people for who they are. A prime example of this is when the men stumble open a poor, old, dirty man sitting on the ground of their path with hardly any clothing on and his bone deteriorating. The father believes the vagabond is trying to steal food and the son believes he truly just needs help. The boy finds it in his heard to give the man a jar of peaches but his father is very hesitant and insist that the boy must not continue speaking to the homeless man and too specifically not ask him to dinner. The young boy crushed by his fathers ignorance and crude behavior begins to see a change in his father and really trust if his father is trying to protect the both of them or just scared of getting to know people. Summary Of ' The Strange Beach ' CHAPTER FOUR As Dark As His Tar Black Soul The strange beach was stifled as if the ghosts of notorious pirates maybe even Blackbeard himself had come back to silence the coastline. My imagination was chuck full of childhood tales–I could picture infamous pirates wielding silver cutlass swords and gallant king's men battling at sea, but the sand was deserted and even the wind now held its breath. "Bro, we've fallen down the rabbit hole or something. I know were not in Pixie Dust anymore . . . but where the heck are we Wonderland?" Mason said in full meltdown mode. "And . . ." he glanced around like he had a twitch, "I saw a flicker of movement in the water. Something's out there I can feel it, you hear me? I'll be fine though–you cut out their tongues and stab them in the eyes, if they close!" I did my best to calm him down. "Everything's okay. Mason there's no one here." I pointed to the glass like lilac–colored water. Not even a seagull soared over the sea. There were just bursts of dappled light peppering the air, reflections rippling across the deep. "Besides," I inhaled the brackish air trying to soothe my nerves, "what am I going to stab them with, my finger?" Relax! Only serene thought are allow, I told myself listening to the soothing sound of lapping waves gently caressed the coast. I repeated it like a mantra twice then I saw something across the purple swells–the silhouette of a small unfamiliar tin– ship approaching, twin smokestacks burping up puffs of ... • 25. Summary Of ' Lady Audra ' Essay Lady Audra, age seventeen, raised her fists and braced her feet in the soil. "Step forward, you little shit," she growled. "You can hit harder than that." This was their typical routine, Audra and the teenage stable boy. In front of the horse paddock on Audra's parents' estate, she and the young man often engaged in sword training and battle axe exercises, but today, they used fists. Audra loved combat training. She stutter–stepped forward, her long red hair in a wild tangle around her face, bruises smarting on her jaw from the recent blow she'd failed to block. However, the stable hand dropped his guard and pointed over Audra's shoulder. She spun around and spotted her parents approaching on horseback. Despite the heat of the day, they wore woolen cloaks that billowed behind them as they rode. Formal. Always so formal. "Ah, damn," she whispered, dropping her fists. "They're back early." It was too late to change from her man's tunic and trousers, which were, incidentally, torn at the knees and filthy. Why couldn't Audra's parents understand she liked learning to defend herself? Besides, the stable boy was never all that rough. And why did being a woman mean one should not stand up for herself, physically or otherwise? "I am leaving. See you later, Audra." The stable boy ran off, leaving Audra to face her parents, the cold Lady Ina and Lord Sior, alone. Audra was their only child, and they'd never paid her any attention. Over the same time period, the percentage of males achieving the same level increased from 18% to 33%. On the other hand, there still continues to be a large difference in the choice of subjects by males and females. However, its argued that the improvement of females in education could be the result of the decline of males, therefore making the gap between gender differences not that significant. Secondly, the interaction between teachers and male and female students. Sociologist Francis (2000) argues that classrooms are still male dominated and that boys are disciplined more frequently and harshly by teachers compared to girls. Therefore, it is seen that boys get more attention than girls as they are disciplined more harshly than girls, leading to girls getting less attention than boys, also in terms of ethnicity, boys from African Caribbean backgrounds are also more likely to be disciplined than white British boys. This may result in boys feeling picked on in school which may result in gender and ethnic differences in achievement. On the other hand, many sociologists have argued the importance of external factors in influencing gender differences in achievement. Feminism strives for equality in society for men and women and has questioned the typical role of males and females in society and challenges the role of women being the housewife. Bordo discusses how in the society of advertising and fashion the male body isn't really seen as a symbol of arousal compared to the female body. She continues saying how the naked or half–naked female body is seen as "an object of mainstream consumption" (p.299), while the male boy is just beginning to be a "commercial representation" (p.299) object. She also talks about how the percentage of people viewing these pictures with half–naked males mainly only increased in the male percentage of viewers instead of the females. Bordo continues by adding how women feel the need ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sources help to show how looking thin and muscular or fit is the popular trend. She explains that advertisements and movies have changed to fit the trend and that she wishes the male body would look more natural rather than a sex object. In Bordo's opinion the male body should be less sexual and more natural. Although this is a plausible argument I believe that men in the ads should continue to appear as "sex objects" (p.312). It would allow men to strive to look like what the ads show. It will also motivate the men of our society to be fit. Bordo also believes that men get aroused by the ads of men in underwear more than women but nowadays a lot of women get aroused by half–naked men. Women do actually "survey" (p.303) men more than she thinks they do. Women like to read or look at pictures with men toned, tan and sexy and fantasize about them. Bordo uses primary and secondary sources from multiple companies to prove her argument that men rather than be seen as sexy macho men they rather be seen for how the really look. She also touches upon how society has changed in media fashion and advertisement concerning the male body from just females just being the only ones in ads to male and females and how it affects females in society ... As the media idealizes women as a miniature size 0 with long blonde hair and blue eyes, it leads to the loss in self esteem. Every girl wants to look like Megan Fox, with her great body and good facial structure. Reality is we can't all look like that and it's what women, call "winning the genetic lottery". "On average, boys believe they are good looking, and girls are unsure" said Melissa Milkie, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Maryland.(Mullen J.2) Girls see themselves due to media, as never being good enough. They tend to be unsure of themselves as women they idolize change themselves with the stipulations of media. Young Women tend to feel that if they are not as skinny and beautiful as the women portrayed on television that they will be bullied or harassed by peers, for the lack of not following the rules of an "ideal" society. Bullying has become a large factor between peers over body image. It is what is called "The Mean Girls Effect". Students are harassed by their peers because their are not the same size as them. Body image at a young age changes the outlook on young teens futures. If they are slightly overweight they are seen as "pudgy" or "thick". Peer judgement is destructive to the self satisfaction of female adolescents. Many girls do not perceive their bodies as normal because of unrealistic, extremely thin images illustrated in the media. Reality is that the impractical images portrayed on the internet and in media has changed the "real" image of what women appear to be. He carefully led his horse down a path within the evergreen forest of black rock, covered with pine trees, but also with oak and elder trees. He has been around this path many times before and maybe even too much as the curious souls began to wonder why a boy of such a noble status would wander in the deep forest of black rock. Not a lot of people spent time in forests, at least not too far away from the main rocky road, made for horses, merchandises, and peasants on foot. People would not wander too far in the forest, because of the obvious fear of wild animals, especially during winter. But they were also avoiding another threat. And that threat was a human threat also known as Willem the Druid, who was a feared and at the same time a much–venerated man because of his knowledge of medicine and herbs. He was also rumored to know magic, and this was perhaps what made him such a dreadful person. But Ayland had this thing about him; which was that he feared no one since he was also certain that he was to become King, one day. This assertion was not born out of a pretentious, motherly molded dream, but by the fact that he was an ambitious and great risk taker. Qualities he would share with his mother. Ayland, got down from his horse, tied it up and walked pass a small house, which should have been the Druid's house. There was a strong smell of brewing rosemary herbs and the small ... Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando, and Thomas Page McBee's memoir, Man Alive, aim to define the male and female gender through life experiences. Virginia Woolf uses the eponymous protagonist, Orlando, to define the freedom that men have within society while women face many societal restrictions. Within Man Alive, Thomas, a transgendered man, experiences similar freedoms and restrictions that Orlando experiences through his experiences within society. Man Alive is the journey of Thomas Page McBee's transition from woman to man; it focuses not on his physical change but on his mental change. Orlando was placed in a predicament that allowed him to experience life both as man and woman. The first thirty years of Orlando's life was spent as a man then he was permanently transformed into a woman. Almost parallel to Orlando's transition experience, Thomas was also in a predicament that allowed him to experience life as a man and woman. Thomas, born Page, goes through a transition to become male. Orlando and Thomas both aimed at trying to figure out who they were in society; Thomas was trying to find what kind of man he wanted to become and Orlando was trying to find what kind of woman she was becoming. For example, if female Orlando was promiscuous, she would be heavily criticized by her community while male Orlando received no censure. I graze my fingers over the lustrous gold letters that were engraved on the plaque with the photograph of the contented young boy whose eyes looked so full of life. I never experienced a loss of someone I loved, and as I look up at the boy in the baseball cap I was longing to know how loss felt. I longed to feel the worst kind of pain, not for the pleasure, but to know that no feeling in the world can be worse. Unexpectedly arriving and disrupting my days with excruciating feelings of terror and pain were daymares. The unexplainable became an ordinary to my middle–school self; however, I never got accustomed to the unnerving dreams themselves. Experiencing the pain of death meant that I would be ready for what were agonizing feelings I endured in my dreams, but I would not know until later on that I was a naive child who asked and received too much to bear. I took a step back and looked up at the brick wall that ended abruptly between the wooden plaque and our school mascot: the black panther. I looked longingly as if in the back of my mind I knew there was something missing. "I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream...", The song was playing in my head softly but distinctly enough that only I could hear it, like in a horror movie. My eyes started to move slowly, and I was looking at my surroundings. I felt nauseous and started to sense every little thing that moved. The tiny bug that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. Richard Rodriguez "Real Work" Essay Analysis D'Auvray Xan D'Auvray Kevin Knight English 111 September 12th, 2012 "Real Work" by Richard Rodriguez is about a young man struggling with self–confidence. He seeks to build his self–esteem by participating in real manual labor over a summer job. When Rodriguez is offered a job working on a construction site he doesn't hesitate to say yes. His father had always told him he could never understand the hardships of "Real work', and Rodriguez felt that completing this summer job would make his father proud of him, and in many ways consider him to be a "Real man". Richard Rodriguez was raised in America, unlike his family. He never really knew anything different. This made it very easy for his father to tell him that "he didn't really know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The father figure depicted in this story could be viewed in a few different ways. At first I thought the authors father was kind of a stuck up, rude man, who was sour about the advantages of living a normal life in American society. I felt that he had made his son feel like he could never do what he had down. If a parental figure makes you feel like that, there tends to be a reaction. It could be positive or negative. In Rodriguez's case he took what his father said, and harnessed it into a positive learning experience. When I thought about more in depth, it became clear that Rodriguez's father wasn't putting his son down at all. He was simply explaining to his son how different their worlds where. He was stressing that although his son had more opportunity, and was presented with much greater potential to be excellent, that the work he did growing up was much harder, and tough than most people realize. His father was just making it known that in his working years he did not have many options as to career choices. But on the other hand I can easily see why the author felt that his father had challenged him. Much like I felt my father was challenging me. Rodriguez felt like he needed to prove that he could perform the same task that his fathers use to do to provide for their families. Working with you're your hands, completing messy, strenuous, sometimes painful jobs was almost a part of Hispanic culture. A part of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Analysis Of James Joyce 's Araby "Illusion is an anodyne, bred by the gap between wish and reality" said by Herman Wouk. Many times in life, people set unrealistic expectations for themselves or for other people. This is not a very wise thing to do because people often feel disappointed and embarrassed for getting their hopes up so high. In James Joyce's short story "Araby" he uses the voice of a young boy as a narrator and describes his childhood growing up in Dublin. Joyce concentrates on description of character's feeling rather than on plot to reveal the ironies inherent in self–deception. The story focuses on the disappointment, and enlightenment of the young boy and the gap between ideality and reality which I believe it is a retrospective of Joyce's look back at life. On the simplest level, "Araby" is a story about a young boy's first love and his quest for the ideal. He has a crush on his friend's sister and his quest to fulfill a promise he made to her. The promise that is made is that he will bring her a present from Araby, a bazaar. He is granted permission from his uncle; however his uncle comes home late on the day of the bazaar making it hard for the boy to get to Araby before it close. When he finally arrives he discovers it is too late to buy anything. Thus, the quest ends in failure. On the deeper level, the failure results in an inner awareness and a first step into adult world. The protagonist faces up the harsh reality for which his precious experience has not prepared for him. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Is Diotima A Man Not A Woman? Most people believe the argument that Diotima is a woman is true solely because she is not a man. However, I find that there are other arguments that are capable of proving that Diotima is indeed a man, not a woman. To be able to explain my theory in an understandable manner, I must clearly illustrate gender roles in Ancient Greece. When it comes to women's roles in Ancient Greece, it is safe to conclude that they were simply a symbol of inferiority when compared to men. I'll list a few things women were not legally able to do: inherit property, appear in court, or give evidence under oath. As a matter of fact, women were not even able to commit the majority of the crimes in Ancient Greece because they were barely ever found in public. And if there happened to be an issue within the family, it was handled either by the father or the husband because they were the legal guardians of women. Boys went to school earlier than girls, because this society felt that men are the intellectuals. Domestically, women were to nurture their children. Now, let's compare this to the role of men in Ancient Greece. Men came home from work and lay on their couches as they were fed and entertained. They were given utmost respect in the house and in their society for they were deemed to be most important. This is all part of misogyny that is well grounded in Ancient Greece. With this background, I argue that Diotima is not a woman because the likeliness of the men to listen to her in this society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. The Experience Of A Volunteer The past two summers I was fortunate enough to go on two mission trips with my church. Our group teamed together with other churches and we worked with the Carolina Missions Team or known as "CMT". This past summer was defiantly an eye–opening experience for me being able to work with an underprivileged community. One of the things I learned and realized during this trip is that even though these people have very little of anything, they are still so willing to give other people they don't know so much love and compassion. Having this opportunity to volunteer has made me more aware of the needs, not just for the people in our own country, but also those in other countries who have much worse circumstances. The experience has led me to want to reach out to those other countries. Hopefully one day being able to travel and give them the help, knowledge, information and hope they need to prosper. We went to Knoxville, Tennessee and we worked at a Boys and Girls in the projects. When my small group (missions group) got to the Boys and Girls club we first looked around at the type of environment and we instantly realized that these kids weren't in the of best homes. This Boys and Girls club was the only one that was free unlike the rest of them in the area. One of the adults in my missions group pointed out a six–year–old boy walking the streets without any supervision all the way up to the Boys and Girls club. We then became very concerned about the safety of the kids and how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. The Power Of The Grotesque The Power of the Grotesque in Literature It is often said that beauty is within the eye of its beholder. A statement this broad, begs the question, "what is the true definition of beauty?" Writers such as Sherwood Anderson and Thomas Mann depict the beauty of life through the usage of the grotesque. The grotesque is used to reveal the absolute truth and reality of humanity. However, no matter how terrifying these truths may be, it is evident that the messages depicted and the passion evoked through them are truly beautiful. Winesburg, Ohio is a collection of short stories by Sherwood Anderson. The episodic stories have a wide range of character types and messages and yet, they all share the common theme of the grotesque. Similarly, Death in Venice the novella by Thomas Mann follows a burdened artist, Gustave Aschenbach who struggles with repressed desires that are slowly liberated throughout the story. Both Anderson and Mann use the grotesque to explain the true nature of society, their characters, and to evoke emotion from their readers especially through the theme of obsession. In order to truly understand the grotesque and its usage, readers must first know its complex history, meaning, and usage. Due to its wide range of usage, the definition of grotesque changed numerous times throughout history. In literary uses, it can be defined as an "expression of the estranged or alienated world...an attempt to control and exorcise the demonic elements in the world" (Thomson). ... • 68. Correlation Between Males And Females On Average The goal of this paper is to determine who is more motivated between males and females on average in reading. In one study females were considered more motivated and exhibited higher mastery in reading. There were several factors that contributed to this conclusion, some being biological and distinctly different from gender to gender. Boys were usually assessed as less developed mentally and developing in different sequences as their female counterparts. The corpus callosum was 20% bigger in females than males. These connect the two hemispheres of the brain. Couple this with these facts together explains why females tend to be better communicators than males. Boys generally express their feeling with action whereas girls are able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There have been mixed results on how it affects children's motivation and achievement. The results from the study suggest that praising children can reduce disruptive behavior in class and stimulate learning. It was difficult to narrow the result of this achievement to the praise itself or to teacher's attention and special privileges. At the time of this publication no study has isolated the effects of praise by itself with this type and setting. Praise has been noted to be varied and exhibit different results at times praise has had an adverse effect on learning while in other settings it has been a great catalyst. One study suggests that praise directed at an activity rather than a person can be a factor for the different outcomes observed. That praising on activity gives specific insight to overcoming problems and is beneficial for future situation that will require problem solving skills. The reason for this maybe that children don't always experience success and personal praise will have the opposite affect at this point. They will begin to equate non–success with being incompetent, bad and unworthy. Studies suggest that females maybe more at risk for the adverse effects of personal praise following setback or failures. Research has found that females tend to accept evaluative feedback more so than males. They perceive this feedback as an accurate reflection of their abilities, while males rely more on their internal belief of their abilities. In a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Essay about Company of Wolves-Little Red Riding Hood Little Red Riding Hood "The Company of Wolves" by Angela Carter is very similar to "Little Red Riding Hood", the little girl heading out with a basket full of liquor and goodies for her grandmother. The wolf stopping her on her way to the grandmother's house; the wolf races to the house, eats the grandma, pretends to be the grandma and makes "Little Red Riding Hood" believe that he is her grandma. He pounces on her and tries to eat her but a hunter comes and kills the wolf and saves the grandma. The story reveals an extensive imagination by elaborating on different ideas and points of view of gender roles. Carter's characters portray these roles very similar to the way we view gender roles today. Carter uses the wolves as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We could assume that every wolf was once a man. At the beginning Carter explains how wolves are "carnivore incarnate and he's cunning and ferocious", but yet she also explains how "melancholy" a wolf can be because "the beasts would love to be less beastly if only they knew how" (110, 112). Everyone seems to be afraid of these wolves "fear and flee the wolf; for, worst of all, the wolf may be more then he seems" which could mean that the wolf isn't necessarily after fresh meat but that he just wants sex. The wolf only sees women as meat. It kind of reminds me of "The Wedding Singer" where Glenn grades his women with the FDA system, for example if he thought a woman was top of the line he would say that she was Grade A, top choice meat. At the end of the story, the wolf seems to be put in his place by the girl because she doesn't fear him and when he tries to frighten her with telling her he's going to eat her, she just laughs at him and rips off his clothes. Many stereotypes have men portrayed as beasts that crave sexual encounters and as creatures that only think about sex which Carter seems to do with the wolves. Women are seen as innocent and virtuous individuals that are only spoiled by men. Bibliography Carter, Angela, The Company of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. The's First Modern Grocery Store Moreover, on that bright June day the hurry and spring in the pretty redhead's step had a teeny bit to do with what her best friend, Sylvia, had told her earlier that same morning: someone new had come to town; a handsome, mysterious young man. All the harbor girls whispered in delight; gossiping, speculating and wondering who would land the first date with this new guy. Rumors had it that he had started work at the newly opened First National, the harbor's first modern grocery store. Oh sure, there were fish markets and butcher shops and the likes, but mostly, folks had milk, cheese and butter delivered, and the majority of women made their own bread and put up their own vegetables and preserves. However, now with this new grocery store, their basics could all be purchased in one locale. The young man that the girls were all buzzing about had only been in Cutler Harbor for two days or so, no one had met him yet. It was Priscilla, who told Natalie; he lived in Damariscotta, some twenty miles away (he did). Then Natalie told Sylvia that she heard he had a car (he did not). In conclusion, Sylvia told Lelia he looked like a dreamboat, just like Clark Gable (he did). The person Lelia had worn her hand–sewn dress for, and couldn't wait to witness with her own eyes was Owen Isaac Bauer. Beyond a doubt, his handsome appearance unearthed the dreamboat the gossip had depicted him. His broad shoulders, combined with a thin build, had him appear much taller than his measured ... • 74. Sammy as a Representation of a Misunderstood Generation in... John Updike presents us in his story A&P, through Sammy's actions, the protest of young and misunderstood generation which he sees in his story, as rebellious and visionless by older generation for which all that does not obey to society's standards is unusual, unaccepted, and accentuated by the fineness of details and nuances, a deep insight intuition of choosing revealing moments of 1960's, in which sexuality was taboo. With this Updike is announcing a big change in the culture, and of the times that he noticed it as such, expressing better through his writing, and presenting Sammy – his protagonist– which wants to be noticed along with signs of anxiety and insecurities, but follows his instincts which are recorded in a universe where his actions are completely different from what other aspects, bringing into focus the originality of character. In "A & P" we can see through John Updike's description each feeling Sammy, a 19 year old, has which is working in a market store. He lives in a small town, having a quiet life and a future that was not offering many opportunities, but along with the arrival in store of the young barefoot girls which were wearing only bathing swims, he starts having all the mix feelings. • 76. The Road By Cormac Mccarthy The Man, The Boy, and the remains of a dead world are the only constants the reader will know as they make their journey down "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. The novel tells a story of the nameless protagonists as they traverse through a post–apocalyptic land in an attempt to reach the warm coast before winter. McCarthy's story also covers many dark and heavy topics – primarily death. He has said himself that death especially is a major issue in the world, and that writers who do not address it are not serious. As a man of his word, McCarthy has written "The Road" with imagery and metaphor alluding to how death stays as a heavy presence even after it has done its work. The book's dystopia is a result of all of the worst faults of humanity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McCarthy also tends to avoid any assignment of speech; one does not know who is speaking because McCarthy has explicitly written that The Boy or The Man has said it, if the reader cannot understand who is saying what then the writer has not done their job. He sees no need for complex and elaborate constructions of literature when words on their own can be simple yet profound in delivery in messages. I specifically chose to read this book because McCarthy is the opposite of myself. I thoroughly respect this ability in him. While I might find other authors like Poe who do the (stark) opposite to be more entertaining, I cannot deny that there is something so remarkable about an author who can manage something so beautiful and direct – naked writing. It demonstrates the depth of thought and careful consideration that went into each word. McCarthy's approach to storytelling, simple yet definitive, conveys far more than what is printed on paper. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the use of metaphor within descriptions of setting does the same. Many times throughout the story are trees mentioned. At first, the frequency may seem peculiar – it is always yellowing dead trees that are mentioned, and this initially serves to reveal to the reader that an unknown apocalypse has basically killed the earth and most of its flora. However, the constant presence of the dead trees is also a reminder that even though death has come and gone the skeletons it leaves behind will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Comparing The Novel ' Out, Out And ' Disabled ' Compare the ways in which the writers create sympathy in 'Out, Out –'and 'Disabled' In the poems, Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen both create sympathy for the characters through different ways. In 'Disabled', Owen paints a vivid, moving picture of a soldier who has been injured in World War One and lost his legs and an arm. Wilfred Owen himself took part in the war, consequently witnessing first hand many young men whose lives were similarly destroyed. In the poem, 'Out, Out', Robert Frost shows the fragility of life in two ways. Firstly alluding to Shakespeare's metaphor in 'Macbeth's soliloquy' – 'Out, out, brief candle', which informs the reader that life is very short and fragile. Moreover, Frost looks at the themes of sudden death and child labour to help to make this a very sad and shocking poem. The poem reflects the tragedy of the accidental death of a child doing a man's job. Frost's description of setting, imagery, and tone create a moving poem with a horrifying ending that leaves the reader feeling despaired at the bleakness of the situation and quite shocked. Even in the structure of the poem, Wilfred Owen shows us a compassionate portrait of loss by switching between and comparing the soldier's experiences 'before' and 'after' war time, and the related memories and emotions, for instance: "And girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim– In old times, before he threw away his knees". This example shows the constant comparison and reminder of the soldier's loss ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
