2. Preliminary task - text
All of our preliminary tasks include
text that was created and added into
the footage on Adobe Premiere Pro.
Each of the fonts were different and
placed in different areas of the rule
of thirds. As well, Lost and The
Enemy’s Ringtone both have the
names at the start of the film,
whereas, Doughnut! has the name
and a couple of the titles at the start
and end.
3. Repressed Version 1 - text
With our first version of Repressed, the
text just appears and disappears
without fading in or out. However, the
text was produced in Adobe After
Effects and rendered into the film
opening. We used a white text and an
original bold font similar to the one
they used in Black Swan. We also made
this font all uppercase, this makes it
look big and important.
4. Repressed Final Version - text
For our final version of Repressed, we
faded the text in and out using Adobe
After Effects and rendered it into the
original footage. This was due to the
feedback we received at the film
showing. The general feedback we
received told us to add an effect to
the text as it looked bland and boring
by just being there without a fade in
or out.
5. Preliminary task - shots
In our preliminary task, we had to
use a range of shots, including a
shot reverse shot, match on
action and we had to follow the
180° rule. With our preliminary
tasks, we also used a range of
shots, including mid shots, low
angle mid shot and close ups.
6. Repressed shots
Repressed contained a variety of
shots. There were many mid
shots, long shots, over the
shoulder shots, low angle mid
shots and it also contained a
close up and extreme close up.
This shows we have learnt how
shots impact the way the film is
shown, how the characters look
and what the audience can
connote from them.
7. Preliminary task - locations
For our preliminary tasks, we
used a corridor outside of a
classroom within the college to
film the match on action and as
our first scene. Our second scene
was in one of the classrooms
within the college. This was after
the match on action and where
the main part of the footage took
place.
8. Repressed - locations
For Repressed, we used two different
locations, although we filmed lots of
different shots within those scenes.
The scene that was shot inside was in a
classroom within the college as we
were unable to find a therapist's
office. The outside scene was filmed
within a derelict building. With
Repressed, we found our own
locations unlike our preliminary
exercise. The derelict building fitted
the codes and conventions of a
psychological thriller and made the
dream sequence look darker.
9. Preliminary task - narrative
Each of our preliminary tasks had very
different narratives. The Enemy’s
Ringtone was about a spy who had
done something wrong. Doughnut!
was about someone who stole the last
doughnut. And lastly, Lost was about a
guy hiding his love for a computer
game. They all worked very well and
made sense when watching them.
They also had very different genres.
10. Repressed - narrative
Repressed has a more in depth
narrative. The main character's
suffering from a mental illness that is
severely affecting him, so he confides
in therapy. We looked at different
genres and picked out one and slowly
built the story up around the genre.
We did this more thoroughly than the
preliminary tasks. We also made sure
that there was a middle and ending to
this film.
11. Preliminary task -
editing
The preliminary tasks included
lots of simple editing
techniques. They contained
cuts, match on action and shot
reverse shots. These were very
easy to do and to learn,
however they worked very well
and they flowed very well.
12. Repressed - editing
Repressed contains lots of different
editing techniques, although some we
had learnt from the initial preliminary
task. Our editing also flowed much
better, as we had used the feedback
we received from our preliminary task
and put it to use for our main project.
Our editing techniques include: cuts,
shot reverse shot, match on action,
continuity editing, eyeline matches
and many more. This shows we have
progressed from the basic editing
techniques we first used.
13. Repressed – creative
outcome.
What we had learnt from our preliminary tasks had an
impact on the final version of Repressed. The shots we
learnt how to compose, the editing techniques we
learnt to do on Premiere Pro and the lack of our own
music in the productions all counted towards our final
version of Repressed. From using unprofessional fonts
in the preliminary tasks, and knowing that they don’t fit
the conventions, we picked a more suitable font for the
final version of Repressed. We also picked more suitable
shots and editing techniques that we used in the final
outcome, such as shot reverse shots and 180° rule. We
also branched out and looked at different genres for the
film opening as there was more time to show the genre
of the film in the opening.
