2. Film Distribution?
• A film distributor is an independent company which acts as the final
agent between a film production company and a film exhibitor.
• The term ‘distribution’ refers to the marketing and circulation of films
in theatres, and for home viewing.
3. What does a distributor do?
• The primary goal of the distributor is to convince the exhibitor to
rent, or ‘book’ each film
• The distributor usually arranges industry screenings for exhibitors,
and uses other marketing techniques that will make the exhibitor
believe that they will profit financially by showing the film.
• After that, a written contract is then secured, specifying the amount
of the gross ticket sales to be paid to the distributer.
4. • The distributor must also ensure that enough film prints are struck to
service all contracted exhibitors, ensure their physical delivery to the
theatre by the opening day.
• Furthermore, the distributor is responsible for ensuring a full line of
film advertising material is available on each film which it believes will
help the exhibitor attract the largest possible audience.
5. Film distribution in the UK
