This letter supports the application of Mr Jeremy Hawker for a post teaching English in
Korea.
I have known Mr Hawker for just over a year. I was his Lecturer and Practice Supervisor
on the one-year intensive Diploma in Education course in Secondary Music here at the
University of Western Australia January-November 2011. He attended 2-3 lectures or
seminars I taught each week, and I was also his personal tutor. I was able to form a
comprehensive picture of his potential as a teacher through the close relationship involved
in his successful completion of this course.
Mr Hawker’s specialist subject in his Undergraduate studies in Townsville, Queensland, as
well as his Postgraduate Teaching Diploma here in Perth has been Music. He is an
accomplished guitarist, fluent in a variety of rock, popular and folk idioms. He composes
music, and has a broad understanding of Western and traditional styles from several
cultures.
My impression of his teaching is that he takes a genuine and committed interest in the
students with whom he works. For this reason, I have no doubt that he will be able to
adapt his existing skills and experience as a teacher to the new focus of teaching English
in Korea.
Mr Hawker is patient, diligent and professional. He has a grasp of youth culture that
informs the relevance and accessibility of his teaching.
2. I believe that he possesses the flexibility of mind and capacity for adaptation and hard
work that will allow him to meet new challenges.
I have no hesitation in supporting this application.
Yours faithfully,
