Social Media
Social media has had a huge impact in the modern
generation. The lives of most people in the modern world
revolve around social networking sites such as Facebook and
Twitter. This aspect has led to some firms employing it as a
marketing tool. However, some firms still believe that social
media does not have any advantages in the corporate world, thus
only suitable for social interactions. However, this is not the
case as some firms have ended up benefiting a lot as a result of
employing social media as a marketing tool (Girard & Girard,
2011). According to a report from the Hubspot, over 92% of
marketers claimed that social media was a very important tool
for businesses in 2014. These marketers went to say that this
tool increases traffic in their websites. Despite many marketers'
positive attitude towards this tool, some of them still do not
know how to effectively employ this tool. This aspect has led to
some firms taking a pragmatic approach in integrating this tool
in their operations. However, the positive attitude is a
demonstration that this tool has a potential of increasing sales if
well employed.
Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have significantly contributed
in the processes of bring about democracy in non-democratic
cultures. Specifically, the young people depend on these sites to
organize and communicate matters they want to express. These
sites provide social structures where people with different
background, cultures, and similar interest join forces over
shared set of demands. They use social media to set agenda or
come up with hierarchy leading to attempts to bring about
changes (Tufekci & Wilson, 2012). People now use Facebook,
Twitter, and YouTube to fuel spontaneous protests that are
difficult to predict and control.Social media sites are the best
places to effectively stir pleasure for changes because the youth
are the majority of the people who use the sites. The youth are
the main power who can make all changes, for example, they
will want to stop any violence against human rights (Tufekci &
Wilson, 2012). When doing this I would resort to use Facebook
since it has more members in comparison to the other two; this
would be much easier to mobilize more individuals. As the
person behind the movement for changes, I will not choose to
remain anonymous.
I believe that the social media can serve as both gateway and
catalyst for social and cultural changes since the minority also
participate in global media that has a homogenizing impact on
the culture in the world. The use of media fosters changes in
culture perspectives and the minority uses the same to extend
the reach of their culture (Tufekci & Wilson, 2012). The social
media attains this through changes in the way culture has been
traditionally conceptualized. As such, it can be used to extend
and catalyze the changes and to create new cultural spaces for
the minority independent on the ethnical or traditional
geographical identification. A number of the journals have
recognized the chance afforded to the minority through the use
of the social media; the sites are the biggest platform currently
relied on as the gateway for changes (Tufekci & Wilson, 2012).
For example, the minority have used the media to post issues
related to discrimination and in many of the cases there have
been reactions from urgencies and other concerned bodies. Such
vise against this group of people has significantly reduced. The
result of this is the transformation of cultural identity and how
the minority thing about themselves in relation to the social
environment.
There are numerous ways through which social media can
increase a company's sales. One of these ways is through
increasing the recognition of the brand. Today, some firms are
partnering with social networking sites to promote their brands.
For instance, twitter has come up with a hashtag application that
enables firms to advertise their products to twitter users that do
not follow their handles. This form of advertisement is
extremely important as it enables firms to reach out to new
customers (In Hajli, 2015). At the same time, it gives
opportunity to the already existing customers to familiarize with
the company. The increase in recognition is likely to be
reflected in the company's revenue as the new customers will
want to know much about the companies, hence deciding to
purchase their products or services.
Employing social media as a marketing tool is likely to
enhance customers' loyalty. This is according to a report that
was published by Texas Tech University. This aspect occurs
when customers are in a position to air their views and
complaints against the firm, something that leads to the latter
reacting to the concerns. These reactions lead to such firms
operating according to the wishes of their customers. This
aspect leads to clients feeling respected, hence becoming loyal.
As a result of this, it is high time firms took advantage of this
tool, and increased their connections with customers.
The other important aspect with employing social media as
a marketing tool is that it increases firms' conversion rates. This
is because of the fact that it enables products to act as human
beings. This aspect ends up attracting customers as people
prefer conducting business operations with fellow human beings
to business companies. For instance, when an individual follows
a brand's handle on twitter or likes its page on Facebook, the
person is likely to treat the brand as a fellow human being.
Thus, the humanization element social media gives products is
extremely important to their success in the market (Ding,
Eliashberg & Stremersch, 2014).
The other important element of social media is that it
provides firms with important opportunities to convert. This is
based on the fact that every post a company comes up with on
social media reaches out to many customers, thus increasing the
opportunities of converting them. When a company comes up
with a Facebook page or twitter following, it has access to
recent, old and new customers. Furthermore, it will have the
chance of interacting with them, hence knowing how they view
the firm. Every blog or video posted leads to reaction from
customers. Such reactions are likely to lead to an increase in the
site visits.
The other important element about social media is that it is
a very cheap marketing tool. What a firm needs is to come up
with social media page, and task one or two employees with
responsibility of posting and checking people's comments. This
is considered to be cheaper than the other modes of
advertisements which require a lot of resources. A good
example of an expensive advert is a television advert which
requires firms to pay the station to air the advert, and those in
the advert. Furthermore, such adverts do not give viewers
enough time to analyze them as they take very little time, with
most of them taking less than 30n seconds.
Analysis of this aspect clearly shows that social media is
the best tool to employ in the modern business arena where
firms are facing immense competition, thanks to globalization.
With social media, firms have a global audience, something that
is not possible with other tools employed in marketing (Golden,
2011). Therefore, firms need to look at the effective ways
through which they will exploit the opportunities presented by
this tool. For instance, they should train their employees on how
to professionally employ social media in their job duties. This
aspect will ensure they do not use this tool in an unethical
manner, for instance using vulgar terms while dealing with rude
clients. This will ensure that they care for their clients.
Social media is very important to a business that uses it to
market its products. Firms using social media as a marketing
tool are likely to benefit in various ways such as increasing the
number of customers, enhancing customer loyalty and
increasing the turnover rate. This is achieved through the fact
that firms can reach out to many customers at the same time via
social media. Furthermore, businesses are also in a position to
interact with their clients, something that makes the latter feel
part of the organization. Based on these aspects, social media
can be of great importance to a business if employed well as a
marketing tool.
Despite social media being in a position to prosper as a result of
employing social media, there are also various ways through
which it can end up being negatively affected as a result of
employing this tool. For instance, it can lead to missed
opportunities or poorly engaging with clients. These aspects
lead to several risks being associated with using social media as
a marketing tool. The risks are; reputational risk whereby
employees can say things that can end up tarnishing
organization image, operational risk whereby employees can
end up revealing confidential information to unauthorized
parties through online interactions and regulatory risks whereby
employees can release unconfirmed reports about the
organization
One of the effective ways of mitigating these risks is through
training employees on how to use social media in an ethical and
appropriate manner. Monitoring how employees use social
media is also an important strategy (MOAC, 2011). However,
monitoring should be done on sensitive matters. At the same
time, firms should come up with a comprehensive social media
culture which will guide employees in the course of their duties.

The Main Problem Facing Generation Y
This generation is made up of individuals born between
1981 and 2000, hence also referred to as the millennium
generation. This generation is believed to be the US next big
generation as they bring a sharp deviation from generation X.
People in this generation were brought up with omnipresent
parents, thus being optimistic, focused and respecting authority.
These aspects have been exhibited by decline in teen pregnancy
and crime rates. However, people here are extremely cautious,
perhaps as a result of learning early that the world is not as safe
as some people tend to think.
In most cases, people discussing about this generation fail
to look at the problems that it might be facing. This is because
of the fact that most Americans are optimistic about the
generation, thus failing to take into consideration that it might
also be experiencing some challenges. Furthermore, these
challenges need to be well handled if this generation is to take
the US to the next level as many people believe.
Analysis of how people in this generation are living
clearly shows that they are experiencing several challenges.
This aspect makes it difficult for an individual to pick the exact
main problem people in this generation go through. For
instance, there are many people in this generation living in
poverty, hence unable to afford medical cover. Such people are
forced to rely on Medicare and Medicaid for their medical
cover. At the same time, the school dropout rate is extremely
high and the cultural values and morals that used to guide the
US society have been eroded. These challenges are extremely
serious and need to be addressed as soon as possible. However,
this is not the main problem facing this generation according to
my own observations. The main challenge facing this great
generation is the mentality of instant gratification. Under this
mentality, individuals believe that success is achieved overnight
instead of being a process that takes time, and involves a lot of
commitment.
If we want to create a future great generation, then we will
have to look at the effective ways of eliminating this mentality.
Today, there are numerous success stories of people who have
worked their way out of poverty. We have American billionaires
such as Bill Gates, Donald Trump and their Russian
counterparts such as Roman Abramovic who worked hard to be
where there are today. At the same time, we also have
individuals who have become successful as a result of utilizing
their talents, for instance the NBA superstars such as Michael
Jordan and Kobe Bryant. People belonging in the generation Y
tend to draw a lot of inspiration from such individuals, hence
their optimistic nature.
They believe that if there are people who are where they are
because of their own efforts, then there is no need of giving up
in life. Instead, one has to keep on fighting until he becomes
successful. However, there is one thing that these people fail to
take into consideration. The thing is that the people they draw
inspirations from did not become successful overnight
(Greenberg & Weber, 2008). They had to work extremely hard
for them to be where they are. They had to suffer setbacks, and
most of them contemplated quitting before finally getting what
they were looking for. In order to know what it takes to be
successful, people need to analyze what those who succeeded to
be where they are today. They need to know how long they had
to wait, and how many times they contemplated giving up, and
the losses they incurred on their way up.
There are various reasons why this generation has adopted
this attitude. However, the main reason for this aspect is that
people in the current generation have grown up in times when
things are done at a very fast rate. You want to pass a message
to a person in another place, just pick up a phone a do what is
necessary or simply sent a fax. At the same time, these people
have ovens and microwaves that can cook and warm food within
a few minutes, hence providing them with food the time they
need it. Furthermore, there is the internet which has made life
very simple. You want information about something, just search
for it from the internet. You want to make new friends, just sign
in to any social networking sites. Moreover, people can today
do their jobs while at home as long as they have a computer and
access to internet.
This type of life makes a person feel that success can also be
achieved in a similar manner as carrying out daily activities.
This turns out not to be the case as there are several factors that
lead to success. This is not the case among people belonging to
other generations such as generation X and baby boomers who
grew up at times when carrying out daily activities was very
difficult and complicated. The difficulties experienced in doing
these activities led to them developing an attitude of hard work,
hence believing that success was not an overnight affair.
Today, there are several stories on the internet about
people who have become successful within a very short time.
Such stories and inventions have been great for this generation
as they give them an urge of working extra hard. However, the
truth is that most people who have ended up being successful in
life have developed over time rather than being where they are
overnight. This statement is true because analysis of today’s
major organizations and companies show that there was a
process before these organizations became successful.
Successful women and men believe that they are where
they are because of their sacrifices and commitments. However,
most people who belong to generation Y are not aware of this,
thus believing that they can achieve whatever they want within
a very short time. Perhaps this is the main reason why poverty
rate among people in this generation is high. These individuals
are unable to hold onto low-paying jobs as they believe they do
not match their ambitions.
At the same time, they are unable to sustain their businesses,
especially when they are not doing according to their
expectations. The belief of instant success has led to these
individuals hopping from one job to another, an aspect that
makes it difficult for them to settle and plan their lives. Seeking
quick reward for something done is not bad as it is likely to
lead to the creation of a great nation for future generations
(Greenberg & Weber, 2008). However, demanding instant
success is what is wrong as it is likely to destabilize the society.
This is because the only way to gain instant success is through
engaging in illegal activities such as drug and weapon
trafficking. Such engagements are likely to have more negative
effects on the society than positives. For example, the society is
likely to experience an increase in criminal activities,
something that will in turn affect the general wellbeing of the
society. For instance the society is likely to experience low
investments whereas some businesses might be forced to close
down their operations as they fear making losses through theft.
In such instances, the nation’s economy will be affected, and we
know what to expect in such situations.
The millennial is an enlightened person who values his/her
individuality more than anything else. Like the baby boomer, he
or she loves to have money. However, the main difference
between the two generations is that the millennial only regards
money as the payoff that exists in today’s society. In other
words, having money in the Generation Y does not signify
prestige, but it is just a normal thing that every modern person
should have. With regards to motivation, the millennial obtains
highest gratification when they can access free time. Hence, a
career millennial will be highly motivated if the company gives
him/her extra time off duty. Where this motivator is not
available, a person of the Generation Y will express little
loyalty to the employer.
The stark differences highlighted above indicate that work
dynamics have changed significantly since the invention of
technology. One important feature of the modern generation, or
the millenials, is technological savvy. Generation Y people have
a deep passion for computers, smart phones and other electronic
devices. In the workplace, it is common to find these people
chatting with friends or workmates on such devices.
Correspondingly, many schools allow students to carry their
mobile phones. It is also because of this technological savvy
that modern teaching approaches include interactive learning.
Taking the example of the workplace, it is impossible to have
employees who belong to only one generation. Usually, workers
come from a mix of generations. This means that generational
diversity affects the dynamics of the workplace to a substantial
degree. To this end, managers and organizational leaders have a
big role to play in ensuring that intergenerational workplace
conflict is minimized. For example, a baby boomer will be more
productive if incentives are given on the basis of output.
However, the millennial in the same company may engage in a
go-slow if the supervisor demands that the employee work for
longer hours in order to meet the target within the set time.
In a scenario like the one depicted above, the company will
encounter bottlenecks in the execution of plans. Furthermore,
the millennial might not understand why the baby boomer is
working so hard for a company that gives little attention
towards personal development. On the other hand, the baby
boomer is likely to view the millennial as an unmotivated
person who spends most of his or her time on the internet. If
allowed to persist, this misunderstanding can badly damage
working relationships. In severe cases, the misunderstandings
can cause communication breakdowns in the workplace. The
ultimate result will most likely be that the firm will not be in a
position to render effective series.
In today’s US society, there are several measures that have
been put in place to develop people belonging to generation Y.
This is because of the belief that this generation promises to be
one of the best in the US history. However, these measures have
failed to deal with some critical issues affecting individuals in
this generation. This aspect has led to some observers becoming
worried that this generation can end up not fulfilling its
potential.
In order to avoid this, several measures have been put in place.
These measures are; having people in this generation set long
term goals rather than short term ones and informing them about
what the famous successful people had to go through in order to
be where they are rather than just telling them of their
accomplishments. With these aspects, this generation is likely
to wake up from its dreamland of instant gratification, and
taking a rational approach in fulfilling their dreams. With such
mentality, I am pretty sure that this generation will take the US
places as many people anticipate.

SOCIAL MEDIA7I got C in this Use of Social media b.docx

  • 1. SOCIAL MEDIA 7 I got C in this Use of Social media by modern generation Name Institution Date Running head: SOCIAL MEDIA 1 Social Media Social media has had a huge impact in the modern generation. The lives of most people in the modern world revolve around social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. This aspect has led to some firms employing it as a marketing tool. However, some firms still believe that social media does not have any advantages in the corporate world, thus only suitable for social interactions. However, this is not the case as some firms have ended up benefiting a lot as a result of employing social media as a marketing tool (Girard & Girard, 2011). According to a report from the Hubspot, over 92% of marketers claimed that social media was a very important tool for businesses in 2014. These marketers went to say that this
  • 2. tool increases traffic in their websites. Despite many marketers' positive attitude towards this tool, some of them still do not know how to effectively employ this tool. This aspect has led to some firms taking a pragmatic approach in integrating this tool in their operations. However, the positive attitude is a demonstration that this tool has a potential of increasing sales if well employed. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have significantly contributed in the processes of bring about democracy in non-democratic cultures. Specifically, the young people depend on these sites to organize and communicate matters they want to express. These sites provide social structures where people with different background, cultures, and similar interest join forces over shared set of demands. They use social media to set agenda or come up with hierarchy leading to attempts to bring about changes (Tufekci & Wilson, 2012). People now use Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to fuel spontaneous protests that are difficult to predict and control.Social media sites are the best places to effectively stir pleasure for changes because the youth are the majority of the people who use the sites. The youth are the main power who can make all changes, for example, they will want to stop any violence against human rights (Tufekci & Wilson, 2012). When doing this I would resort to use Facebook since it has more members in comparison to the other two; this would be much easier to mobilize more individuals. As the person behind the movement for changes, I will not choose to remain anonymous. I believe that the social media can serve as both gateway and catalyst for social and cultural changes since the minority also participate in global media that has a homogenizing impact on the culture in the world. The use of media fosters changes in culture perspectives and the minority uses the same to extend the reach of their culture (Tufekci & Wilson, 2012). The social media attains this through changes in the way culture has been traditionally conceptualized. As such, it can be used to extend and catalyze the changes and to create new cultural spaces for
  • 3. the minority independent on the ethnical or traditional geographical identification. A number of the journals have recognized the chance afforded to the minority through the use of the social media; the sites are the biggest platform currently relied on as the gateway for changes (Tufekci & Wilson, 2012). For example, the minority have used the media to post issues related to discrimination and in many of the cases there have been reactions from urgencies and other concerned bodies. Such vise against this group of people has significantly reduced. The result of this is the transformation of cultural identity and how the minority thing about themselves in relation to the social environment. There are numerous ways through which social media can increase a company's sales. One of these ways is through increasing the recognition of the brand. Today, some firms are partnering with social networking sites to promote their brands. For instance, twitter has come up with a hashtag application that enables firms to advertise their products to twitter users that do not follow their handles. This form of advertisement is extremely important as it enables firms to reach out to new customers (In Hajli, 2015). At the same time, it gives opportunity to the already existing customers to familiarize with the company. The increase in recognition is likely to be reflected in the company's revenue as the new customers will want to know much about the companies, hence deciding to purchase their products or services. Employing social media as a marketing tool is likely to enhance customers' loyalty. This is according to a report that was published by Texas Tech University. This aspect occurs when customers are in a position to air their views and complaints against the firm, something that leads to the latter reacting to the concerns. These reactions lead to such firms operating according to the wishes of their customers. This aspect leads to clients feeling respected, hence becoming loyal. As a result of this, it is high time firms took advantage of this tool, and increased their connections with customers.
  • 4. The other important aspect with employing social media as a marketing tool is that it increases firms' conversion rates. This is because of the fact that it enables products to act as human beings. This aspect ends up attracting customers as people prefer conducting business operations with fellow human beings to business companies. For instance, when an individual follows a brand's handle on twitter or likes its page on Facebook, the person is likely to treat the brand as a fellow human being. Thus, the humanization element social media gives products is extremely important to their success in the market (Ding, Eliashberg & Stremersch, 2014). The other important element of social media is that it provides firms with important opportunities to convert. This is based on the fact that every post a company comes up with on social media reaches out to many customers, thus increasing the opportunities of converting them. When a company comes up with a Facebook page or twitter following, it has access to recent, old and new customers. Furthermore, it will have the chance of interacting with them, hence knowing how they view the firm. Every blog or video posted leads to reaction from customers. Such reactions are likely to lead to an increase in the site visits. The other important element about social media is that it is a very cheap marketing tool. What a firm needs is to come up with social media page, and task one or two employees with responsibility of posting and checking people's comments. This is considered to be cheaper than the other modes of advertisements which require a lot of resources. A good example of an expensive advert is a television advert which requires firms to pay the station to air the advert, and those in the advert. Furthermore, such adverts do not give viewers enough time to analyze them as they take very little time, with most of them taking less than 30n seconds. Analysis of this aspect clearly shows that social media is the best tool to employ in the modern business arena where firms are facing immense competition, thanks to globalization.
  • 5. With social media, firms have a global audience, something that is not possible with other tools employed in marketing (Golden, 2011). Therefore, firms need to look at the effective ways through which they will exploit the opportunities presented by this tool. For instance, they should train their employees on how to professionally employ social media in their job duties. This aspect will ensure they do not use this tool in an unethical manner, for instance using vulgar terms while dealing with rude clients. This will ensure that they care for their clients. Social media is very important to a business that uses it to market its products. Firms using social media as a marketing tool are likely to benefit in various ways such as increasing the number of customers, enhancing customer loyalty and increasing the turnover rate. This is achieved through the fact that firms can reach out to many customers at the same time via social media. Furthermore, businesses are also in a position to interact with their clients, something that makes the latter feel part of the organization. Based on these aspects, social media can be of great importance to a business if employed well as a marketing tool. Despite social media being in a position to prosper as a result of employing social media, there are also various ways through which it can end up being negatively affected as a result of employing this tool. For instance, it can lead to missed opportunities or poorly engaging with clients. These aspects lead to several risks being associated with using social media as a marketing tool. The risks are; reputational risk whereby employees can say things that can end up tarnishing organization image, operational risk whereby employees can end up revealing confidential information to unauthorized parties through online interactions and regulatory risks whereby employees can release unconfirmed reports about the organization One of the effective ways of mitigating these risks is through training employees on how to use social media in an ethical and appropriate manner. Monitoring how employees use social
  • 6. media is also an important strategy (MOAC, 2011). However, monitoring should be done on sensitive matters. At the same time, firms should come up with a comprehensive social media culture which will guide employees in the course of their duties. References Ding, M., Eliashberg, J., & Stremersch, S. • 7. Name Institution Date Running head: ECON 200 1 The Main Problem Facing Generation Y This generation is made up of individuals born between 1981 and 2000, hence also referred to as the millennium generation. This generation is believed to be the US next big generation as they bring a sharp deviation from generation X. People in this generation were brought up with omnipresent parents, thus being optimistic, focused and respecting authority. These aspects have been exhibited by decline in teen pregnancy and crime rates. However, people here are extremely cautious, perhaps as a result of learning early that the world is not as safe as some people tend to think. In most cases, people discussing about this generation fail to look at the problems that it might be facing. This is because of the fact that most Americans are optimistic about the generation, thus failing to take into consideration that it might also be experiencing some challenges. Furthermore, these challenges need to be well handled if this generation is to take the US to the next level as many people believe. Analysis of how people in this generation are living clearly shows that they are experiencing several challenges. This aspect makes it difficult for an individual to pick the exact main problem people in this generation go through. For
  • 8. instance, there are many people in this generation living in poverty, hence unable to afford medical cover. Such people are forced to rely on Medicare and Medicaid for their medical cover. At the same time, the school dropout rate is extremely high and the cultural values and morals that used to guide the US society have been eroded. These challenges are extremely serious and need to be addressed as soon as possible. However, this is not the main problem facing this generation according to my own observations. The main challenge facing this great generation is the mentality of instant gratification. Under this mentality, individuals believe that success is achieved overnight instead of being a process that takes time, and involves a lot of commitment. If we want to create a future great generation, then we will have to look at the effective ways of eliminating this mentality. Today, there are numerous success stories of people who have worked their way out of poverty. We have American billionaires such as Bill Gates, Donald Trump and their Russian counterparts such as Roman Abramovic who worked hard to be where there are today. At the same time, we also have individuals who have become successful as a result of utilizing their talents, for instance the NBA superstars such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. People belonging in the generation Y tend to draw a lot of inspiration from such individuals, hence their optimistic nature. They believe that if there are people who are where they are because of their own efforts, then there is no need of giving up in life. Instead, one has to keep on fighting until he becomes successful. However, there is one thing that these people fail to take into consideration. The thing is that the people they draw inspirations from did not become successful overnight (Greenberg & Weber, 2008). They had to work extremely hard for them to be where they are. They had to suffer setbacks, and most of them contemplated quitting before finally getting what they were looking for. In order to know what it takes to be successful, people need to analyze what those who succeeded to
  • 9. be where they are today. They need to know how long they had to wait, and how many times they contemplated giving up, and the losses they incurred on their way up. There are various reasons why this generation has adopted this attitude. However, the main reason for this aspect is that people in the current generation have grown up in times when things are done at a very fast rate. You want to pass a message to a person in another place, just pick up a phone a do what is necessary or simply sent a fax. At the same time, these people have ovens and microwaves that can cook and warm food within a few minutes, hence providing them with food the time they need it. Furthermore, there is the internet which has made life very simple. You want information about something, just search for it from the internet. You want to make new friends, just sign in to any social networking sites. Moreover, people can today do their jobs while at home as long as they have a computer and access to internet. This type of life makes a person feel that success can also be achieved in a similar manner as carrying out daily activities. This turns out not to be the case as there are several factors that lead to success. This is not the case among people belonging to other generations such as generation X and baby boomers who grew up at times when carrying out daily activities was very difficult and complicated. The difficulties experienced in doing these activities led to them developing an attitude of hard work, hence believing that success was not an overnight affair. Today, there are several stories on the internet about people who have become successful within a very short time. Such stories and inventions have been great for this generation as they give them an urge of working extra hard. However, the truth is that most people who have ended up being successful in life have developed over time rather than being where they are overnight. This statement is true because analysis of today’s major organizations and companies show that there was a process before these organizations became successful. Successful women and men believe that they are where
  • 10. they are because of their sacrifices and commitments. However, most people who belong to generation Y are not aware of this, thus believing that they can achieve whatever they want within a very short time. Perhaps this is the main reason why poverty rate among people in this generation is high. These individuals are unable to hold onto low-paying jobs as they believe they do not match their ambitions. At the same time, they are unable to sustain their businesses, especially when they are not doing according to their expectations. The belief of instant success has led to these individuals hopping from one job to another, an aspect that makes it difficult for them to settle and plan their lives. Seeking quick reward for something done is not bad as it is likely to lead to the creation of a great nation for future generations (Greenberg & Weber, 2008). However, demanding instant success is what is wrong as it is likely to destabilize the society. This is because the only way to gain instant success is through engaging in illegal activities such as drug and weapon trafficking. Such engagements are likely to have more negative effects on the society than positives. For example, the society is likely to experience an increase in criminal activities, something that will in turn affect the general wellbeing of the society. For instance the society is likely to experience low investments whereas some businesses might be forced to close down their operations as they fear making losses through theft. In such instances, the nation’s economy will be affected, and we know what to expect in such situations. The millennial is an enlightened person who values his/her individuality more than anything else. Like the baby boomer, he or she loves to have money. However, the main difference between the two generations is that the millennial only regards money as the payoff that exists in today’s society. In other words, having money in the Generation Y does not signify prestige, but it is just a normal thing that every modern person should have. With regards to motivation, the millennial obtains highest gratification when they can access free time. Hence, a
  • 11. career millennial will be highly motivated if the company gives him/her extra time off duty. Where this motivator is not available, a person of the Generation Y will express little loyalty to the employer. The stark differences highlighted above indicate that work dynamics have changed significantly since the invention of technology. One important feature of the modern generation, or the millenials, is technological savvy. Generation Y people have a deep passion for computers, smart phones and other electronic devices. In the workplace, it is common to find these people chatting with friends or workmates on such devices. Correspondingly, many schools allow students to carry their mobile phones. It is also because of this technological savvy that modern teaching approaches include interactive learning. Taking the example of the workplace, it is impossible to have employees who belong to only one generation. Usually, workers come from a mix of generations. This means that generational diversity affects the dynamics of the workplace to a substantial degree. To this end, managers and organizational leaders have a big role to play in ensuring that intergenerational workplace conflict is minimized. For example, a baby boomer will be more productive if incentives are given on the basis of output. However, the millennial in the same company may engage in a go-slow if the supervisor demands that the employee work for longer hours in order to meet the target within the set time. In a scenario like the one depicted above, the company will encounter bottlenecks in the execution of plans. Furthermore, the millennial might not understand why the baby boomer is working so hard for a company that gives little attention towards personal development. On the other hand, the baby boomer is likely to view the millennial as an unmotivated person who spends most of his or her time on the internet. If allowed to persist, this misunderstanding can badly damage working relationships. In severe cases, the misunderstandings can cause communication breakdowns in the workplace. The ultimate result will most likely be that the firm will not be in a
  • 12. position to render effective series. In today’s US society, there are several measures that have been put in place to develop people belonging to generation Y. This is because of the belief that this generation promises to be one of the best in the US history. However, these measures have failed to deal with some critical issues affecting individuals in this generation. This aspect has led to some observers becoming worried that this generation can end up not fulfilling its potential. In order to avoid this, several measures have been put in place. These measures are; having people in this generation set long term goals rather than short term ones and informing them about what the famous successful people had to go through in order to be where they are rather than just telling them of their accomplishments. With these aspects, this generation is likely to wake up from its dreamland of instant gratification, and taking a rational approach in fulfilling their dreams. With such mentality, I am pretty sure that this generation will take the US places as many people anticipate. References Greenberg, E. H., & Weber, K. (2008).
