For my observations, I interviewed Penny who teaches gymnastics to children at a local fitness
center. She teaches classes every Friday and Saturday to children ranging from 2–14 years old. I
observed her multiple times and recorded 6 hours of observations. After talking to Penny Lane, I
found out she did gymnastics as a child at her local fitness center. She was a student for there for
about 8 years, while growing up. Then while she was in high school she was asked to teach for
students at her fitness center. She enjoyed it so much that when she moved up to Bellingham, she
asked the fitness center in town if she could teach some lessons. At the time, no one was teaching
gymnastics and the fitness center said that she could teach. She was able to create her own lesson
plans and has been working at this location for 2 years. This is how she was able to get involved
with this type of work. She did mention a few struggles with the job such as the fitness center does
not have a lot of funding and that sometimes hinders the lessons and she explained that older
students tend to drop out and go somewhere else. When I asked her how she felt about her work she
said that it was easy and fun. She really enjoys working with kids and feels comfortable teaching
gymnastics. She wants to keep this job throughout her schooling because she wants to be an
elementary school teacher once she graduates from college. She doesn't make very much money so,

Moreover, my students had a high maturity level and knew to wear appropriate athletic wear. The
prerequisites for this class was balance, coordination, leg strength, physical abilities, and
developmental readiness. They were learning to play a variety of sports such as pickle ball, soccer,
volleyball, and shot put.
My students' everyday experiences consisted of some form of physical activity being that they were
majoring in Health & Physical Education. All of my students were born in America and spoke

instruction. For math, we decided to use station teaching. This allows students to discover a true

each teacher to incorporate his or her own unique perspective into the classroom. This style could be
challenging for math because it requires extra planning and you have to make sure both teachers are
teaching similar methods at the same time so movement from one station to the next is smooth. We

When I began the lesson plan on verbals I had students write freely about a significant incident in
their lives in which you were taught a meaningful lesson. Students had complete freedom to write
on a topic that had happened to them, or someone they knew. When students are given the
opportunity to write about their lives, that is when we empower students with their own words. The
students were able to choose what incident they wanted to write about from their lived experiences.
After my minilesson on verbals I wanted students to incorporate these into their own writing to add
action and precise details about their significant incident. During this lesson plan I wanted to keep in
mind the one ELL student at field placement. I had gotten to know her very well through
interviewing her, and knew from previous conversations that she really struggled to understand
grammar. When students were working individually on their writing assignment, I made sure to visit
this one student in particular to be sure that she understood the concept fully. This student works
very hard, and I know she is doing twice the amount of work as every other student due to the

After taking the survey, I now realize I wish I was doing more differentiated instruction in my
classroom. I chose a lot of "somewhat agrees" and that means that I sometimes implement
differentiation but not always. Reading through all of the questions really had my thinking on how I
use them in my classroom. For example: one of the questions I had trouble with was: I make
frequent use of peer tutoring and peer assistance in my classroom. I do not do any of that in my

I will sometimes jot down by their name on the seating chart who needs help with what. Doing more
formal assessments is a must in my classroom. One example of a formal assessment that I did this
past year was teaching the second graders the song "Rocky Mountain." Once the song was
memorized the students would come to the front of the room and sing "Rocky Mountain" for
everyone to hear and I would grade them on their singing ability; if all words were memorized, sang
each note on the correct pitch and if they sang in the correct key throughout. I found this to be very
helpful with their personalities and interests because I found out who really liked singing and who
did not really enjoy it. I also found out who was shy and who was more outgoing. This helped me
prepare some of lessons for the next few times and I knew who I could call on to sing for everyone.
Another strength that I have is helping students set individual learning goals. I recently helped a
student who usually has a hard time concentrating and staying on task create a GPAR (Goal–Plan,
Action and Result), to help him get through his classes more focused. It worked very well and the
student got a great result and therefore I know I will be doing this more next year to help a lot more
students become successful.
