Resentment In Shooting An Elephant
Resentment of various types pervades "Shooting an Elephant," from the beginning to the end. As a conspicuous agent of the foreign presence, a
stranger–master, the narrator finds himself, "for the only time in [his] life," automatically "hated by large numbers of people." This hatred takes the
form, in its non–crisis mode, of "an aimless, petty . . . anti–European feeling . . . very bitter," expressed in opportunistic acts like spitting betel juice on
the dress of a European woman crossing the bazaar, or deliberately fouling a European player during a British–Burmese soccer–match, while the
referee (a Burman) conveniently turns his back. The fouled player is the narrator himself, whose misfortune on the playing–field occasions what he calls

Orwell as author, his protagonist as narrator, and indeed the crowd all anthropomorphize, attribute human characteristics, to the elephant. But the
elephant, of course, is well–known for its high level of intelligence, a fact which raises it out of the merely animal category; and the social structure of
Burmese society under the British tends to underscore such quasi–human status. The animal is a working animal and to do work is to engage in a
recognizably social activity; the animal belongs, as Orwell later discloses, to an Indian, a person below the British in the local hierarchy but above
the Burmese, a person of some wealth, for the elephant is the equivalent of "a huge and costly piece of machinery" in the local economy. The
elephant, like the human overlords of the place, can therefore function as an object of resentment, a safer one (in fact) than any actual person, because
offending him entails little chance of official reprisal. Moreover, the elephant has "destroyed somebody's bamboo hut, killed a cow, and raided some
fruit–stalls," and he has trampled to death "a black, Dravidian coolie." The quasi–human animal has committed a quasi–criminal act, one involving
deadly violence, which places him in jeopardy of a quasi–legal and fully lethal response. The ambiant resentment of Moulmein, the town where the
action occurs, suddenly possesses a center around which it can safely polarize, around which a fierce unanimity–minus–one can abruptly form and

Therapies Of Laughter
Laughter tends to spread effortlessly among people and chimps when we see it happening around us. So why do the people around us affect our
behavior? When someone laughs it's almost impossible not to join in. There are laughing therapies that people attend because humans love to laugh.
De Waals chimps laugh during games and he can't help but expresses a laugh of his own. Chimps join each other into the same behavior as easily as
humans do. Shared laughter is one example of primate sensitivity. The same thing happens when a person yawns, it's contagious. This is because our
bodies can't resist the urge to yawn. It's easy to catch on to someone else's behavior such as, synchronization: running when others run, crying when
others cry or yawning

Definition Of Comedy Essay
Some Risky Business The moment you all have been waiting for. You see the mic–stand, the mic, a stool, and a bottle of water. The stage is empty and
silent, then someone appears on the stage. But in that moment, you don't think about the reasons for your great anticipation, whether it is because
someone is entering the stage or the on–coming laughter that you look forward to. This is one of stand–up comedy's greatest mysteries. These unknown
mysteries bring life into us in many ways. Comedy captures minds, by changing, evolving, and redefining everything we did or did not think. This
gateway to bliss aids our bodies through chemicals we produce. But most importantly, it is a huge factor in our human makeup, and how we
communicate and relate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The meaning of laughter to all is not as simple, but much more complex. Comedians use comedy as a door to educate minds, while using laughter as
a safety room. Jokes are made by a formula, one critiqued and created to perfection to make the listener believe in what they are saying. So, when the
moment comes and a joke is said, not only is the listener's voice unleashing sounds, but their minds are releasing thoughts and questions. "The question
also begs us to consider when we laugh, with whom, at whom, at what, and why" (Carter and Villaverde, 104). Picture this, a room full of people that
are crying from laughter, heaving because they are out of breath, and smiling uncontrollably, right after you release your deepest thoughts in one joke.
This is the moment comedians live for, because knowing that the crowd laughed meant they are right where the comedians need them, vulnerable. In
those few seconds the crowd is impressionable, laughing while questioning everything they ever thought. This here is the change comedians have been
looking for. In a TEDtalk with Chris Bliss called "Chris Bliss: Comedy Is Translation," he stated, "Every act of communication is an act of
translation." In short, the language of comedy is a simple truth. Comedy educates in its own language. Only those brave enough and self–assured can
conquer such a

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Natural Observation
Natural observation is the study of human or animal behavour in real world or natural settings (Yasukawa, 2014). In natural observations, the
researcher records what he/she observes in whatever way he or she can. Therefore one can assert that such method of observation exerts strengths and
limitations when conducting research. As such, in an article by Ross et al (2011) on distinct laugh patterns in chimpanzees, one may argue the
strengths and limitations of naturalist observation as evident in the said study. For example, the use of natural observation enabled the researchers to
understand the dynamic processes that underlie the behaviour of subjects (Seemungal, 2015: Unit 2), therefore Ross et al were able to comprehend and
assert that socialization through play maintenance was integral to laugh elicited laughter in chimpanzees. Another strength of naturalist observation is
that it provides great ecological validity given that researchers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

addition, the article questioned the emotional intelligence of human's ability to produce convincing Duchenne laughter, also exploring the possibility
of such intelligence in great apes. In contrast, based on the findings of Ross et al (2011) the ability of chimpanzees to produce laugh elicit laughter is
an indication of their emotional intelligence , that is they are able to appropriately manage and respond to their feelings and the feelings of their

Comedy and Different Opinions
Different opinions
Comedy is of course made up of many things. Since we are all different we all have different opinions about what makes up comedy. French
Philosopher Henrie Bergson wrote an essay in which he explains what comedy means to him and how it is composed. Jimmy Carr and Lucy Greeves
have also written an easy in which, they define what comedy is and how it is an important factor in human life. Both these authors have many
differences in what they feel comedy is as well as some of the similarities that they have in common. Bergson, Carr and Greeves define comedy in
many ways like who laughs, situations that are funny, who makes a joke, group comedy and emotions regarding comedy.
Have you ever asked your self who laughs at funny things? Many of us might of answered humans. Bergson suggests that laughter is only produced by
humans and that no other creatures have the capability to laugh expect us humans. Carr and Greeves also suggest that humans are the planet's most
successful creatures in having the capacity to laugh. Although unlike Bergson, Carr and Greeves also suggest that apes also have the capacity to laugh
(37–49). They mention the process of evolution, as we all know, evolution suggests that humans once evolved from apes; therefore, they feel that apes
also have the capacity to laugh due to recent research
Flores 2 that says that animal behaviorist have observed some form of laughing and smiling in small chimps. Although Carr and Greeves mention, "A

The Impact Of Media On A Global Level
Introduction Ever since written language became pervasive in human civilization, "literacy" became defined as the ability to interpret a series of
squiggles as letters with meaning. Now, as language and modes of communication are evolving, so are the definitions of literacy. Media messages are
rapidly assimilating into culture at unprecedented rates, with lasting effects. The makes it just as necessary for people to understand how to interpret
media messages as it is for them how to know to read printed language (Thoman & Jolls, 2004). While media literacy was initially implemented into
American curricula as a way to explain how various forms of media platforms work, the field now hones in focus on understanding media's potential for

Gender stereotypes are just one way that the media can affect how people relate to one another. The present study shall outline a different but related
issue: media's usage of canned laughter and its effects on empathy and, thus, how people relate to each other. Due to the subjective nature of empathy,
researchers have not come up with an objective measure or a concrete definition for it. However, the general consensus is that empathy is the ability to
feel or imagine another person's emotional experience. It exists in two facets: an emotional facet, where an individual vicariously experiences another's
emotional state, and a cognitive facet where a person perspective–takes to imagine another's experience (McDonald & Messinger, 2011). The ability to
empathize is an important part of social and emotional development, affecting an individual's behavior toward others and the quality of social
relationships (McDonald & Messinger, 2011). Research on empathy stresses the importance of its early cultivation in childhood. Children develop
empathy in a gradual process from infancy; while there is conflicting research, recent findings suggest that kids become more aware of their own
feelings around age four and can more easily relate to others' feelings around

Also in my elementary life, I have so much friends and we shared laughers everyday when we met at school, my classmates back at that that time
are fond of making jokes with each other and laughs together, I miss my elementary days because it is very enjoyable and full off activities and
also less stress in our studies because the teacher will consider your grades even if you are not so smart and not so active at school at least you go
to class and participate every time the teacher have an activity. I can also prove that when you have so much fun, you can really tell that the time
is very fast. Making friends is just easy as making a cake, when you have all the ingredients and have all the materials to bake a cake, it is just very
easy, just like making friends, if you are friendly and very fond of making jokes, people attracts at you and interacts with you until you became

Bob Marley's Get Up, Stand Up
I woke to the sun in my eyes. It wasn't until I stretched and my brain began to work that I suddenly froze. Being a random Tuesday in April, why
was the sun waking me instead of the Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" blaring from my phone at an ungodly hour? I was late; very, very late.
Flying out of my bed like a horse out of the gates, I yelled out a few profanities while pulling on the first items of clothing that happened to be lying
around and whipping my head around to figure out my bearings. Time didn't seem to exist in my room; there was no way to tell. My phone, my clock,
my laptop, everything was gone. Somebody was having some fun with me, and I was about to find out who.

would you know what time it is? Don't you need this?". He tossed me my watch, and I caught it hurriedly, suddenly very aware of the nakedness of
my wrist. A quick glance at the clock face revealed that it was already 11:45; if I hurried I would barely make the second half of 5th period. "What is
the matter with you? Why aren't we at school? Mom is going to kill us!" I hissed at him through clenched teeth. "School? Oh yeah, it's canceled today –
something about a water main break on Cornell. Mom's at work, so she doesn't know a thing," he sneered as he breezed past me out the door. "I'm
going to meet Ben down at the club, thanks for being such easy prey!", he called back when he saw my annoyed expression. As I watched the little

Reflection Of Lolita
Having read Lolita before this one, I was in a divided mind whether to bring the book home. Not that Lolita was "bad", no chance of that, but it
exerted an impression which I would love to liken to a massive dose of LSD: lovely exasperating, trippy to the max, to a certain extent very similar
to a case of migraine. Unfortunately, the black butterfly on its cover knew my dilemma and blinked with me. I brought the book, and soon
envisioned myself getting stuck in the same vein of chaos of words, metaphors, excessively equivocal language and bizzare monologues once again.
However, to my utmost bewilderment, Laughter turned out not very elusive as I had expected. I made hardly any endeavor to finish it all in one light
read, and even had time for reflective pauses during and after reading. Wow, is it me or the tale monster really that easy to tame this time?... Show more

Cry The Beloved Country Literary Analysis
In Cry, the Beloved Country, the city of Johannesburg enables Gertrude's desires to control her life, yet the desires that govern her are shamefully
careless. Before Gertrude left Ndosheni, she had been surrounded by villagers who essentially knew many or all of their community's people,
including her. With the fear that several people would know of or observe her actions, Gertrude was encouraged to act upon the ethical desires widely
accepted by her people. On the other hand, Johannesburg has little to no sense of community–being a heavily populated city and the majority of its
inhabitants strangers to one another–which allows Gertrude to pursue the amoral desires within her, and for them to occur unnoticed by relatives.
When Stephen Kumalo, her brother, finally receives word of Gertrude's illness, he leaves for Johannesburg and finds her in a shabby, dirty house,
crammed between similar buildings. Anxiously standing in front of his sister's door, awaiting what would be their first encounter after several
months, Kumalo overhears a "laughter in the house, the kind of laughter of which one is afraid... perhaps because it is in truth bad laughter," (Paton
59 emphasis added). The bad laughter he hears is a product of Gertrude's careless desires; her undisciplined lust for men. The context in which this
laughter comes from is what makes it bad, especially in Kumalo's mind, for he is not just her family, but a priest as well. Without a close–knit
community to direct

For as long as I can remember Halloween has been my favorite holiday. I remember as a child dressing up as my favorite Disney character or when
I got too cool for princesses dressing up as the latest horror movie character. I remember going out with my parents to get candy or going to
Halloween parties. But sitting here thinking about it it almost seems like a lifetime ago. I turn away from the car window to which I had been
staring out at the sunset since getting in the car and slowly reach my gaze to the driver's seat and there he is, the love of my life. He sits with one
hand on the steering wheel, the other rests on my thigh his thumb tracing little circles, his eyes are straight ahead and focused on the road, the car
is filled with the sound of his voice for he has a habit of singing in the car which is one of the many reasons why I married this man. He looks over
briefly to meet my stare alternating looking at the road and looking at me, "I can't wait to see the look on your face when you finally find out
where I am taking you." We set out this morning for the destination of our honeymoon which I was told was a surprise but that didn't at all affect my
constant begging that he told me. "Wouldn't you much rather see the look on my face now? All you gotta do is tell me where we are going." At this
he smiles, "Sorry baby, not gonna happen. This time you've just gotta wait and see." We go back and forth like this for a little while until my breathing

Compare And Contrast Bergson And Davis Theories
Philosophers over the years have attempted to generate their own theories of what makes a person laugh. Bergson and Davis's theories have given
people an indication of what that could be. Together these philosopher's theories enlighten us to why people might laugh. Bergson and Davis's theories
limit us in explaining to the fullest extent of the workings of comedy. Bergson's theory has three elements that he believes constitute why we laugh and
claims, "...the mechanical encrusted upon the living," promotes laughter (Bergson 10). While Davis's theory is concerned with the foundation of
laughter with incongruities and ambiguities. As well the audience, who finds something funny, instead of the object that is funny. Bergson's theory

Bergson articulates that commonly laughter transpires in a group, and people do not frequently laugh in isolation. For instance, the example Bergson
used was about a group of travelers laughing and a bystander not affiliated with the group, not laughing. Because the bystander was isolated from the
group and not part of the joke, the bystander did not laugh. For this is a good example of no laughter in isolation, but there are cases where people can
be alone and laugh at themselves in isolation. A person could trip over their kids toy and laugh because the toy was out of place, even though there was
not another person present laughing with them.
Bergson's three elements have strong observations, but there are components of it that are debatable that can limit this theory. The first limitation
would be concerning that we only laugh at objects that we have stamped as human or ours. People can laugh at a variety of matters. Another issue
would be with the absence of feeling coinciding with laughter because a person can claim that laughing while still feeling some sort of emotion is
possible. For example, laughing about something that makes you happy, in that moment you are feeling an emotion while laughing. A person could
also say that laughing is an emotion in itself.

Analysis Of Wayne C. Booth's The Company We Keep : An...
In the central chapter of his 1988 book The Company We Keep: An Ethics of Fiction, Wayne C. Booth uses François Rabelais's famous
sixteenth–century comic novel Gargantua and Pantagruel as a case study for his investigation of the role of ethics in literary criticism. Through a
polemics with Mikhail Bakhtin and his perhaps most influential text Rabelais and His World, Booth sets out to prove that the French novel which the
Russian scholar uses as a paradigm for his definition of the carnival spirit is, because of its propensity for the ridicule of women, ultimately an unethical
work. Though Booth admits that both he and his wife once found the supposedly canonical novel very funny, his recently acquired understanding of the

Just how significant an ethical problem laughter poses for Booth's critical methodology can be seen from the final chapter of his book where at least
one of the remaining three case studies again revolves around the question of what a contemporary reader should or should not find amusing. His
reading of Mark Twain's classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn begins with a reference to the novelist's rejection of moralist criticism and
continues with a number of compliments about Twain's use of American colloquial idiom. Booth then adjusts the focus of his interpretation and
analyzes the very end of the work in which no amount of the author's humour can conceal the latent racism of the novel's denouement. While he
concedes that it might be possible to defend the book by "the attribution to Huck, not to Mark Twain, of all the ethical deficiencies" (470), Booth
eventually concludes that it is the plot's ending, and not the character's words, which violates the basic ethical principles and, therefore, makes
Huckleberry Finn into a critical liability.
Booth's is, by no means, an isolated opinion. For many years before critical theory rehabilitated the role of ethics in literary and cultural criticism, a
number of scholars, philosophers, and writers observed that laughter as a common audience response may have "an ethical edge to it" (Booth

Aristotle's Function Argument
Aristotle's 'function argument', produced in the Nicomachean Ethics, is subject to harsh criticize that seemingly attacks Aristotle as being a writer that
doesn't think his works thoroughly enough. The lack of blunt argument–statehood is substantial enough to and unfortunately interferes in proceeding to
understanding what Aristotle has set out to demonstrate. We will find out, in further reading of theNicomachean Ethics, that Book 1 is merely an
introduction to Eudaimonia and the Human Function. It is but a sketch, or rather an outline to what the book informs throughout. Where many believe
to be the start to the Function argument, Aristotle produces imagery of human–related objectives to their appropriate functions–craftsman to man and
body parts to whole. This is meant to provoke the reader to critically think about their own function (as a human) and Eudaimonia (note that we learn
about this right before the function argument is presented). I will defend the function argument and it's plausibility in this essay by explaining the

The answer is, well we can look at it two ways. The first is, what is the function of a knife, as in, what does it do? Simply it is to cut. If we then ask
the different way, which Christine M. Korsgaard mentions in her essay, Aristotle's Function Argument, what is the function of a knife, as in, how
does it do what it does, the answer is: it uses its sharpness. Here, we see that function can be composed from two different perspectives. Similarly, if
we look at the example of the carpenter and ask what the function is, we can get two different answers. What is the function of a carpenter, as in,
what does he or she do? The answer is actions of carpentry. But, when we ask, how does he or she do carpentry, we get a different answer and a more
functional answer that which Aristotle believes in. Life as an act or activity (NE

Difference Between Smiling And Laughing
There are many things that most people didn't know about smiling and laughing. Not a lot of research is done with smiling and laughing because
of the fact that there is no background or scientific reason for it. That is not true, there may not be no specific reason for them, but there is a
scientific reason for why and when they happen. Smiling and laughing is apart of our daily lives because there are so many health benefits of
smiling and laughing, people should understand what happens when we laugh, what smiles are, and the difference between the two. Although we do
know what laughing is, we don't know what happens when we laugh. When people laugh a chemical called endorphins are released from your brain,
these chemicals are what make people happier. Endorphins can also be called natural pain killers because of how much stress they relieve and reduce
anxiety. When endorphins are released the number of cortisol cells go down. Cortisol is a hormone that makes us stressed and gives us unpleasant
feeling inside such as depression and anger.(Fix.com) A good laugh will release all those unpleasant emotions, so then you feel better emotionally.
Laughter is one way that will increase our creativity and lower our depression rate(Provine, Robert R. Laughter: a scientific investigation). When we
smile, most people believe we are happy, but in some cases that is not true. Smiles can indicate much more than just happiness, they also could be
hiding someone's anxiety and fear. That

One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest: the Power of Laughter
The Power of Laughter Jimmy Buffet once said "If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane." When an individual is no longer capable of
laughing, he is also no longer capable of being in control of himself. This happens when a greater authority has the power to deny a person of their
laughter; which, inevitably, denies him of his freedom. Ken Kesey conveys the idea that laughter and freedom go hand in hand throughout his novel
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Kesey portrays laughter as a parallel to freedom through various literary symbols and imagery in order to illustrate
how the power of laughter can free a man who is under the control of an unjust authority. Through the characterization of Nurse Ratched and

The pleasure Nurse Ratched gets out of these success' illustrates that she loves gaining power and taking away people's freedoms. Nurse Ratched
manipulates the men on the ward and the faculty in order to gain power and take away all of their freedoms, even their freedom to laugh. Kesey
conveys that the challenge of authority is the key to finding true identity. The protagonist, McMurphy immediately is introduced as this man with a
huge, impenetrable ego. From the moment he steps on the ward, Chief notices that he's different. Upon McMurphys arrival, Chief is awakening
from the fog he is in. He's in the day room with his inmates and is listening in on their conversations. Suddenly he hears Nurse Ratched announce
that there is a new arrival. McMurphy enters the ward and is laughing. Chief notes that, "..it's free and loud...[it] sounds real...it's the first [real] laugh
I've heard in years" (16). This illustrates how McMurphy, even from the beginning, has the intentions to challenge the rules. Before him, no one
laughed on the ward, or even spoke above an indoor voice. However, as soon as he arrives, his laughter is "loud and free" which demonstrates that he
is boisterous and independent. The combine will not succeed in taking away his freedom, nor will Nurse Ratched take away his ability to laugh. A
second example is the scene in which McMurphy and his inmates disregard Big Nurses orders that they cannot watch the world series and watch it
anyway because

character which is a bunny is not a scary animal but one that looks nice. This is very clever as well.
The way the character moves and its expression is worth more than the dialogue. The dialogue is just a bonus to help the story make more sense.
Also the way the creators made things appear to be real not entirely fairytales is great, because it make more sense to humans and it can relate to daily
life. Creators of the amazing film Bugs Bunny were very clever and this has added to its popularity.
Thirdly, Bugs Bunny videos have been around for over 100 years and are everywhere. The popularity of Bugs Bunny has a lot to do with how it is
publicised. Bugs Bunny is one of the first videos that has ever come out. Therefore many people are familiar with it. Parents of the 21st century
probably watched this cartoon as well. These parents are now familiar with it this then means that they will show their kids. This is another valid
reason why Bugs Bunny is popular because it has been around for a long time. Television is a great way to do this. Bugs Bunny has been shown on

that the word humor in medieval times was tied "to the four fluids of the body –– blood, phlegm, choler, and black bile" (Krsywicka). The people
believed all these should be in balance in the person as well as in their physical world (Cameron, qtd. by Krzywicka). Today most people do not
associate humor to body fluids, but they do associate it with laughter. As medicine has advanced over the years, doctors have continued to study "the
humors" of then, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most often as people age, life happens, and their social world changes; therefore, so do their sources for humor. Thankfully researchers observed that
less humor led to a less enjoyable life. One particular study of "laughter therapy" done by Kuru and Kublay showed positive outcomes in nursing home
residents. The National Cancer Institute defines laughter therapy as one that "uses humor to relieve pain and improve well–being. It may include
laughter exercises, clowns, and comedy movies, books, games, and puzzles." Kuru and Kublay concluded that "[a]fter the laughter therapy intervention,
general and subscales (physical functioning, role–physical, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, role–emotional and spiritual health)
quality–of–life scores of residents in the experimental group significantly increased in comparison with the pretest." If nothing else, this conclusion
should motivate nursing home administrators to incorporate some type of laughter or humor therapy into the daily schedule of their

The Carnivalesque Role of the Fool in Twelfth Night and...
Twelfth Night and The Servant of Two Masters both relate to this course's theme of the carnivalesque. Both plays share the commonality of having a
clown, or a fool; in Twelfth Night it is Feste or the Fool, and in The Servant of Two Masters it is Truffaldino. Both characters play the fool in
contrasting ways to express similar yet different forms of the carnivalesque. During carnival, laughter is prominent; people are laughing together, they
are laughing at each other, and they are being laughed at. The laughter of carnival is both malicious and happy and everyone is included in it. Feste
and Truffaldino show the different aspects of carnival laughter through their portrayals of the fool. Feste plays the role of the artificial fool... Show more

Truffaldino is too immersed in the action of the play to even notice the laughter of others. Because he is so wrapped up in what is going on, he isn't
able to stop and notice that everyone is laughing at him. This is clearly shown in the dinner scene. Truffaldino is so busy trying to serve both masters
that he misses the other waiters making fun of him and he misses how foolish he looks running back and forth from Beatrice's room to Florindo's room
stuffing food in his mouth in between (Goldoni 129–134). Feste and Truffaldino both take part in trickery in their respective plays. Their motives
behind doing the tricks show the different ways that each character plays the fool. Feste participates in the scheme against Malvolio by attempting to
drive him insane by dressing up as Sir Topas and speaking nonsense. In response to Malvolio complaining that it is dark in the room, Feste says "Why,
it hath bay windows transparent as barricadoes, and the clerestories toward the south north are as lustrous as ebony. And yet complainest thou of
obstruction?" (Shakespeare 4.2.34–36) Feste tells Malvolio that the room has two small windows that are as clear to see out of as if looking out of
stone and that the windows facing south north are as clear as ebony. It makes no sense. Feste contributes to this prank out of revenge. Malvolio had
wronged him in the past: I was one, sir, in this interlude, one Sir

The Impact Of The Birds By Aristophanes : The Life Of Humans
Planet Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. It is the largest terrestrial planet and is the third planet from the sun. After millions of years of
evolution, the once fiery and gassy sphere of particles, volcanos and dust evolved into planet with an atmosphere capable of sustaining life. Humans
inhabited the Earth for over 5 million years and modern civilization is approximately 200,000 years old. During our existence humans have evolved
along with Earth, and learned to adapt to survive. Humans have become the most dominant living creature and are responsible for many significant
changes and developments in the world such as: technological advances, medical research, farming and agriculture that have allowed us to become the
civilization we are today. However, according to Clive Hamilton's, Defiant Earth, humans are also accountable for damaging the ecosystem and
changing the entire Earth System so much, "that the Earth has now entered a new geological epoch" known as the Anthropocene (Hamilton,10). Our
reckless activity and disregard for other living organisms has brought many negative consequences which include the extinction of wild life,
deforestation, ocean acidification, water and air pollution amongst other disasters we can account for. The ancient Greek playwright "The Birds" by
Aristophanes, provides a not so comic look at a world where birds mimic the human dominance by taking over their own city and turning on humans
and their gods. This essay will refute

Animal Totem: Personality Or Circumstance In Life
The term Totem refers to a natural or mythical animal that one feels a close connection to and that is relevant to one's own personality or
circumstance in life. Those who get to know their animal totem have the ability to gain insight and understand themselves and their lives. A Totem
can also be a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that is a representation of a group such as a family or tribe (Crystal Cure). The Native Americans
receive an animal Totem at birth, also known as a birth Totem or the Native American zodiac. This group believes that as one grows, their birth Totem
guides, protects, and teaches them. The birth Totem for my month is known as the Strong Sun Moon with a woodpecker, coyote, and a frog as the
animal representation.

Humor And Humour Of The Picture Of Dorian Gray
On why humour is about power, control and the balance of intellect and emotions
In ancient times, humour or comic was strictly censored. In places like Greece and Egypt, jokes were even forbidden in social situations. Considering
the almost taboo nature of humour, it 's hardly surprising that humour never received particular attention from ancient scholars. Plato was averse to
humour as jokes and sarcasm were not encouraged and men and women were expected to be serious rather than frivolous about all issues. Some ancient
scholars went to the extent to argue that humour could lead to sarcasm, disrespect, vulgar or volatile discourse and finally anger, resentment and even
murder.
Despite this, there is some interesting anecdotal evidence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A recent example of humour gone badly is the case of Charlie Hebdo. The magazine has been under repeated attacks as their humorous cartoons on
Prophet Muhammad and on the aftermath of Italian earthquake were considered in bad taste and insensitive. The concept of humour has been
anthropologically tied to the aggressive and mocking behaviour of apes. However, historically humour has been linked with a type of play so humour
is primarily applied to situations that are comic. However, laughter has often been associated with scorn, mockery, and sarcasm.
Philosophically, humour has been explained with the superiority theory, the relief, and incongruity theory. Superiority theory suggests that humour and
ridicule are often used against an adversary as by joking about someone, we establish our superiority. This theory suggests that laughter helps us to
establish superiority. The Relief theory suggests that humour is a form of relief of the nervous system and laughter acts as a valve and helps in
relieving the pent–up nervous energy.
The relief theory is a popular theory in philosophy and is congruent with the Freudian theory of humour as Freud argued that humour is the release of
sexual energy and repressed unconscious thoughts and emotions on hostility and sexuality are often given vent through laughter and jokes. This means
that if you feel sexually attracted to someone or feel hostility towards someone, you 'll tend to joke to release some of that

Aristotle's Function Argument '
Aristotle's 'function argument' produced in the Nicomachean Ethics, is subject to harsh criticize that seemingly attacks Aristotle as a philosopher
whom does not think his works thoroughly enough. The lack of blunt argument–statehood is substantial enough to and unfortunately interferes in
proceeding to understanding what Aristotle has set out to demonstrate in the Nicomachean Ethics. Book 1 is merely an introduction to Eudaimonia and
the Human Function. It is but a sketch, or rather an outline to what the book informs throughout. Where many believe to be the start of the Function
Argument (NE1.7, 1097b30–34), Aristotle produces imagery of human–related objectives to their appropriate functions;craftsman to man and body
parts to whole. This is meant to provoke the reader to critically think about their own function––as a human and Eudaimonia (note that we learn about
Eudaimonia before the function argument is presented). I will defend the function argument and it's plausibility in this essay by explaining the method
utilized to build up this strong structured argument. This essay will converse with excerpts directly from Aristotle's work, as well as... Show more

and, that this function is unique to us (NE 1.7,1098a 35–36). This seems to hold up, but Scholar Robert Nozick, in his work of Philosophical

humans? The action of laughter is brought up (Nozick, Robert, P.516). For the shear fact humans are the only animals that laugh, should it mean life
should be focused on humor? If this is the case, the function argument would lose credibility and could be viewed as a comical claim. And being there
are other unique aspects of humans, would this then contradict Aristotle? Would it open the debate to more than one

This is not a decision to be taken lightly because he has a son on the way, and if he commits to vegetarianism then he will jeopardise how he was

How Is Diction Used In Lord Of The Flies
Man has been evolving through time ever since he began to exist, he starts out as a savage animal in the wild, and since evolves to the civilized
person we know today. What would happen though, if man had to go back to the wild? Would they go back to their savage ways? This is shown
in the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, when a group of young boys find themselves stranded on a deserted island. The theme of this
book is loss of civilization takes men back to the savage that they have evolved from, and literary devices illustrating the theme are tone, diction and
allusion. One literary device Golding uses in Lord of the Flies to show the theme is tone. "They're going to hunt you tomorrow." (188). In this quote,
Samneric inform Ralph that Jack plans to hunt down and kill him. Golding has Samneric use a serious tone to show the reader that Ralph is in
danger because Jack completely regresses to a wild animal and plans to kill Ralph. Jack is no longer... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the words that Golding chooses can help the reader better understand the boy's regression to uncivilized behavior, for example, this quote:
"He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling." (99). In this line Golding uses descriptive words on Jack's laughter, the words
he chooses are similar to how you would describe a wild animal. This shows the boys regression because when they first got on the island, it would be
more likely that Golding would use words to describe a human not an animal, so this means the boys have deteriorated overtime. Another example of
Golding using diction to show the boys regression is in this quote: "The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away." (55). The
descriptive words Golding is using in this line illustrate the world. They explain that the world has a certain structure, and the boys are moving away
from that, once again, showing the boys

Humor And Its Effect On Human Nature
"You grow up the day you have your first real laugh – at yourself" ––> Ethel Barrymore. The individual who laughs at himself is learned Humour is
marked by with, sarcasm, the realisation of human folly, or is an expression of elation and rapture. It is largely determined by our ability to laugh at
something, or more specifically, the ease with which we do so. True humour is one that stems from the sheer wit of the joke itself, where irony or
derision of a thing or way of life is identified, and perhaps the only way to communicate farce in human nature is through deep rumbling laughter
originating from the depths of the abdomen. Laughter of such a warm, welcome and explosive nature is genuinely jovial; indeed, this may be the
"real" laughter Ethel Barrymore is referring to. This kind of uninhibited laughter is arguably the product of self–deprecation or the realisation of
individual failure where something amiss transpired, unknown to the collective majority. The ease with which one laughs at himself speaks volumes
about his character, or the degree with which he overcomes his fragile ego or untarnished pride. In spite of this, the man who is wise need not have
laughed at himself in his ascent to maturity: the pages of his development could have been creased another way. Nevertheless, a broader outlook
suggests that it is when we can truly laugh at ourselves, that we have finally grown up. Barrymore proposes that maturity is achieved precisely when
one has no qualms about

Analysis Of Anthropocene Laughter
With that, a new idea of Anthropocene laughter is brought up, where laughter is now different than what is was originally known as because what
used to make people laugh simply does not apply to this new age. Although one could argue that the previously mentioned play The Birds is an
outdated comedy that does not have any influence today, they play perfectly follows the Theory of laughter and concepts set up by Bergson, therefore
it is effective today and applies to the current epoch.
The Anthropocene not only brings a new epoch, but also new ways and kinds of laughter, much different from things that once made humans laugh
prior in the Holocene. Human kind has these modes of laughter that were never present before this new age of change caused by humans in which
they now play a significant role in shaping all earth's systems. With just the Internet alone there are things like memes, emojis, and animal videos that
make people of all ages and races today snicker. In order for things today to be considered comedic, laughable, and part of Anthropocene laughter, they
must follow the theories and concepts set up by Bergson. He begins the very first chapter with the following statement, "the comic does not exist
outside the pale of what is strictly human [...] you may laugh at an animal, but only because you have detected in it some human attitude or expression"
(3). To clarify, Bergson is emphasizing that laughter in its natural state is entirely human, making it not a luxury but a

importance of it. In The Devil's Arithmetic, Yolen used the motifs of hope and inhumane treatment to show the theme, even if you're being treated
inhumanely, you should still have hope. The motif of hope is shown when Gitl says, "Without laughter, there is no hope. Without hope, there is no

numbers tattooed on their arm, saying that they're their "new names" (Yolen, 90–101). This shows the theme by showing that the Jews were being

Humor In Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
When we think of the genre comedy, our immediate thought is usually movies that generate gales of laughter such as Airplane (1980) and The Naked
Gun (1988) or great performances by comedians like Charlie Chaplin and Steve Carell. Yet, humor can make its presence felt in movies that are not
archetypally included in the genre of comedy. In this essay, I will shed light on the use of comedic elements in one such movie, Indiana Jones and the
Temple of Doom (1984). I will begin by citing specific examples from the movie, with references to the three theories of humor. Subsequently, I will

Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell Essay
Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell
In his essay Shooting an Elephant, George Orwell explains how the controlling authorities in a hostile country are not controlling the country's
population but are in fact a mere tool of the populous. Orwell's experience with the elephant provided the insight for his essay, and gives a clear
example of the control the natives have over the authorities.
The authorities in Lower Burma were there to police the state that their government controlled, but were only accomplished in being controlled by the
people of the state. Orwell finds this truth in his encounter with the elephant that has ravaged parts of the city. Orwell develops a following of the
native people after he finds the Indian who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Orwell could not test the elephant; if it charged him and trampled him to the ground he would be left open to laughter from the crowd. This was an
unacceptable notion to Orwell, he was laughed at constantly by these people around him and he would do anything to avoid it, including shooting
the elephant. "And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh. That would never do. There was only one alternative. I
shoved the cartridges into the magazine and lay down on the road to get a better aim." The mere threat of laughter was the only reason Orwell shot
the elephant. Not for fear of his own life but the mere chance that he might lose face in the presence of the natives was all Orwell needed to shoot the
animal.
This power the natives had over Orwell was compounded as Orwell was forced to watch the mighty elephant die in agony. Orwell had not wanted to
shoot the animal from the start but the threat of laughter from the people around him forced him into doing their bidding. Giving into the mob would
alleviate the problem of looking the fool in front of the natives, but watching the animal die set Orwell in his place. Orwell was forced to shoot the
animal repeatedly, until he ran out of ammunition, further adding to the animals suffering. Orwell

The Inuit people believe that there is the land under the world, and a land in the sky. Including the world itself they believed in three realms. On death
the person's soul would go to the underworld or the land above, but they would pass on certain qualities to a recently born child. Trickster stories were
important because they taught morale rules and boundaries. The purposes of the stories were to teach the young certain lessons about life and how
they should act. The Great Spirit created the Sun and the Moon who were given the task of further creation. The Sun and the Moon then moved on to
create man and woman. Like many other creation stories, it starts out with a supreme being who then creates some deities and they create mankind.

unusual, however, it is actually pretty good for the mental and physical well–being of a person. There are about 400 laughter yoga clubs all over the

WHAT IS LAUGHTER YOGA?
Basically, laughter yoga is a kind of yoga that involves voluntary laughter, this was because it is believed that voluntary laughter affects the
psychological and physiological aspect in a really good way, since it also has the same benefits as spontaneous laughter. This kind of yoga is most
commonly done in groups, that involves eye contact and jokes between the group. The reason is so that the forced laughter may turn into an actual
and contagious laughter. This was first practiced during the 90s, where group of old people would go to the park and just laugh. There was even a

I Got A Call From My Best Friend
On February fifteenth, 2015, I got a call from my best friend, Mya.
"Hey Serena!" she warmly greeted me. "How would you like to go to sleep away camp with me this summer?"
I thought that sleep away camp with my best friend since diapers would be an amazing experience.
"I'd love to!" I replied.
Mya and I spent the whole afternoon researching sleep away camps, trying to find the right one. Finally, we found the seemingly perfect one week
camp, Camp Lohikan. It had a wide variety of interesting activities, such as quad riding, jet skiing, archery, bungee jumping, horseback, theater, the list
goes on and on. To our excitement, both of our parents agreed to send us tothe camp together. They even requested that we be put into the same cabin.
From that day, the countdown began; only one hundred eighty seven days until camp. Almost everyday, I would wake up to find a text from Mya
reading,
"Can't wait until Lohikan!" to which I would reply,
"Me too!"
Finally, the week before camp approached. I, however, was no longer excited for camp, In fact, I was dreading the day that I had to leave for
camp. This feeling was mostly because I was nervous. What if the food is gross? What if my cabin mates are rude? What if my counselor is rude?
What if I get homesick? I thought. At one point I became super dramatic and asked myself, What if I die? Everyday when Mya called, however, I

Edgar Allan Poe Short Story Analysis
Edgar Allen Poe's Hidden and Repetitive Style
Edgar Allen Poe has a hidden and repetitive style through out most of his short stories. Most of his short stories are dark, or have an insane or
unstable narrative. Which causes a reader to question Edgar Allen Poe's own sanity. Though with the constant abuse of opium and alcohol there is no
wonder his short stories are written as they are, morbid with a dark sense of humor. This is shown through out his short stories, a few examples are
"Instinct Vs Reason – A black cat", "The Business Man", and "The Island of Fae", all written by Edgar Allen Poe show that he has a repetitive style,
humor, and tone even though all the stories written by Poe are completely different in content.
The short story "Instinct Vs Reason – A Black Cat" sets a tone of mockery, that humans believe they are superior because they see reason higher than
instinct and do not believe that animals can reason and only rely on instinct. This tone is common to see or notice within all of Edgar Allen Poe's
short stories "In recent years, critics have focused not on this dramatic use of humor hut on Poe's wit, on his satire and irony, on a Poe whose humor
requires an elaborate set of footnotes to be appreciated. While this approach has unearthed a number of overlooked references and "in" jokes, calling
attention to Poe's divided or elitist sense of his audience, it has done this at the expense of downplaying the broader, more universal, less intellectual
humor that screams out from the center of Poe's work." (Lewis, 531–532) Edgar Allen Poe gives an example of how his black cat can reason instead of
only relying on instinct like his peers seem to have believed. He shows this as "That portion of the kitchen which she most frequents is accessible only
by a door, which closes with what is termed a thumb–latch; these latches are rude in construction, and some force and dexterity are always requisite to
force them down. But puss is in the daily habit of opening the door, which she accomplished in the following way." (Poe, 344) Edgar Allen Poe
explains that his peers seem to believe that the human species no longer rely on instinct and have shielded themselves from using it as they thought the

Resentment In Shooting An Elephant

  • 1. Resentment In Shooting An Elephant Resentment of various types pervades "Shooting an Elephant," from the beginning to the end. As a conspicuous agent of the foreign presence, a stranger–master, the narrator finds himself, "for the only time in [his] life," automatically "hated by large numbers of people." This hatred takes the form, in its non–crisis mode, of "an aimless, petty . . . anti–European feeling . . . very bitter," expressed in opportunistic acts like spitting betel juice on the dress of a European woman crossing the bazaar, or deliberately fouling a European player during a British–Burmese soccer–match, while the referee (a Burman) conveniently turns his back. The fouled player is the narrator himself, whose misfortune on the playing–field occasions what he calls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Orwell as author, his protagonist as narrator, and indeed the crowd all anthropomorphize, attribute human characteristics, to the elephant. But the elephant, of course, is well–known for its high level of intelligence, a fact which raises it out of the merely animal category; and the social structure of Burmese society under the British tends to underscore such quasi–human status. The animal is a working animal and to do work is to engage in a recognizably social activity; the animal belongs, as Orwell later discloses, to an Indian, a person below the British in the local hierarchy but above the Burmese, a person of some wealth, for the elephant is the equivalent of "a huge and costly piece of machinery" in the local economy. The elephant, like the human overlords of the place, can therefore function as an object of resentment, a safer one (in fact) than any actual person, because offending him entails little chance of official reprisal. Moreover, the elephant has "destroyed somebody's bamboo hut, killed a cow, and raided some fruit–stalls," and he has trampled to death "a black, Dravidian coolie." The quasi–human animal has committed a quasi–criminal act, one involving deadly violence, which places him in jeopardy of a quasi–legal and fully lethal response. The ambiant resentment of Moulmein, the town where the action occurs, suddenly possesses a center around which it can safely polarize, around which a fierce unanimity–minus–one can abruptly form and ... • 2. Therapies Of Laughter Laughter tends to spread effortlessly among people and chimps when we see it happening around us. So why do the people around us affect our behavior? When someone laughs it's almost impossible not to join in. There are laughing therapies that people attend because humans love to laugh. De Waals chimps laugh during games and he can't help but expresses a laugh of his own. Chimps join each other into the same behavior as easily as humans do. Shared laughter is one example of primate sensitivity. The same thing happens when a person yawns, it's contagious. This is because our bodies can't resist the urge to yawn. It's easy to catch on to someone else's behavior such as, synchronization: running when others run, crying when others cry or yawning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Definition Of Comedy Essay Some Risky Business The moment you all have been waiting for. You see the mic–stand, the mic, a stool, and a bottle of water. The stage is empty and silent, then someone appears on the stage. But in that moment, you don't think about the reasons for your great anticipation, whether it is because someone is entering the stage or the on–coming laughter that you look forward to. This is one of stand–up comedy's greatest mysteries. These unknown mysteries bring life into us in many ways. Comedy captures minds, by changing, evolving, and redefining everything we did or did not think. This gateway to bliss aids our bodies through chemicals we produce. But most importantly, it is a huge factor in our human makeup, and how we communicate and relate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The meaning of laughter to all is not as simple, but much more complex. Comedians use comedy as a door to educate minds, while using laughter as a safety room. Jokes are made by a formula, one critiqued and created to perfection to make the listener believe in what they are saying. So, when the moment comes and a joke is said, not only is the listener's voice unleashing sounds, but their minds are releasing thoughts and questions. "The question also begs us to consider when we laugh, with whom, at whom, at what, and why" (Carter and Villaverde, 104). Picture this, a room full of people that are crying from laughter, heaving because they are out of breath, and smiling uncontrollably, right after you release your deepest thoughts in one joke. This is the moment comedians live for, because knowing that the crowd laughed meant they are right where the comedians need them, vulnerable. In those few seconds the crowd is impressionable, laughing while questioning everything they ever thought. This here is the change comedians have been looking for. In a TEDtalk with Chris Bliss called "Chris Bliss: Comedy Is Translation," he stated, "Every act of communication is an act of translation." In short, the language of comedy is a simple truth. Comedy educates in its own language. Only those brave enough and self–assured can conquer such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Natural Observation Natural observation is the study of human or animal behavour in real world or natural settings (Yasukawa, 2014). In natural observations, the researcher records what he/she observes in whatever way he or she can. Therefore one can assert that such method of observation exerts strengths and limitations when conducting research. As such, in an article by Ross et al (2011) on distinct laugh patterns in chimpanzees, one may argue the strengths and limitations of naturalist observation as evident in the said study. For example, the use of natural observation enabled the researchers to understand the dynamic processes that underlie the behaviour of subjects (Seemungal, 2015: Unit 2), therefore Ross et al were able to comprehend and assert that socialization through play maintenance was integral to laugh elicited laughter in chimpanzees. Furthermore, Ross et al (2011) noted that expressions such laughter and smile are integral tools for emotional intelligence. Not only this, but the article also informed that humans ability to produce distinct responses is an indication of an important component of emotional intelligence and empathy. In addition, the article questioned the emotional intelligence of human's ability to produce convincing Duchenne laughter, also exploring the possibility of such intelligence in great apes. In contrast, based on the findings of Ross et al (2011) the ability of chimpanzees to produce laugh elicit laughter is an indication of their emotional intelligence , that is they are able to appropriately manage and respond to their feelings and the feelings of their playmates in order to promote cohesion which is a social ... • 5. Comedy and Different Opinions Different opinions Comedy is of course made up of many things. Since we are all different we all have different opinions about what makes up comedy. French Philosopher Henrie Bergson wrote an essay in which he explains what comedy means to him and how it is composed. Jimmy Carr and Lucy Greeves have also written an easy in which, they define what comedy is and how it is an important factor in human life. Both these authors have many differences in what they feel comedy is as well as some of the similarities that they have in common. Bergson, Carr and Greeves define comedy in many ways like who laughs, situations that are funny, who makes a joke, group comedy and emotions regarding comedy. Have you ever asked your self who laughs at funny things? Many of us might of answered humans. Bergson suggests that laughter is only produced by humans and that no other creatures have the capability to laugh expect us humans. Carr and Greeves also suggest that humans are the planet's most successful creatures in having the capacity to laugh. Although unlike Bergson, Carr and Greeves also suggest that apes also have the capacity to laugh (37–49). They mention the process of evolution, as we all know, evolution suggests that humans once evolved from apes; therefore, they feel that apes also have the capacity to laugh due to recent research Flores 2 that says that animal behaviorist have observed some form of laughing and smiling in small chimps. • 6. The Impact Of Media On A Global Level Introduction Ever since written language became pervasive in human civilization, "literacy" became defined as the ability to interpret a series of squiggles as letters with meaning. Now, as language and modes of communication are evolving, so are the definitions of literacy. Media messages are rapidly assimilating into culture at unprecedented rates, with lasting effects. The makes it just as necessary for people to understand how to interpret media messages as it is for them how to know to read printed language (Thoman & Jolls, 2004). While media literacy was initially implemented into American curricula as a way to explain how various forms of media platforms work, the field now hones in focus on understanding media's potential for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gender stereotypes are just one way that the media can affect how people relate to one another. The present study shall outline a different but related issue: media's usage of canned laughter and its effects on empathy and, thus, how people relate to each other. Due to the subjective nature of empathy, researchers have not come up with an objective measure or a concrete definition for it. However, the general consensus is that empathy is the ability to feel or imagine another person's emotional experience. It exists in two facets: an emotional facet, where an individual vicariously experiences another's emotional state, and a cognitive facet where a person perspective–takes to imagine another's experience (McDonald & Messinger, 2011). The ability to empathize is an important part of social and emotional development, affecting an individual's behavior toward others and the quality of social relationships (McDonald & Messinger, 2011). Research on empathy stresses the importance of its early cultivation in childhood. Children develop empathy in a gradual process from infancy; while there is conflicting research, recent findings suggest that kids become more aware of their own feelings around age four and can more easily relate to others' feelings around ... • 10. Bob Marley's Get Up, Stand Up I woke to the sun in my eyes. It wasn't until I stretched and my brain began to work that I suddenly froze. Being a random Tuesday in April, why was the sun waking me instead of the Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" blaring from my phone at an ungodly hour? I was late; very, very late. Flying out of my bed like a horse out of the gates, I yelled out a few profanities while pulling on the first items of clothing that happened to be lying around and whipping my head around to figure out my bearings. Time didn't seem to exist in my room; there was no way to tell. My phone, my clock, my laptop, everything was gone. Somebody was having some fun with me, and I was about to find out who. With a hop, a skip, and a jump he made his way down the stairs; careful not to trip or scuff his new Jordan's. "How would you know what time it is? Don't you need this?". He tossed me my watch, and I caught it hurriedly, suddenly very aware of the nakedness of my wrist. A quick glance at the clock face revealed that it was already 11:45; if I hurried I would barely make the second half of 5th period. "What is the matter with you? Why aren't we at school? Mom is going to kill us!" I hissed at him through clenched teeth. "School? Oh yeah, it's canceled today – something about a water main break on Cornell. • 11. Reflection Of Lolita Having read Lolita before this one, I was in a divided mind whether to bring the book home. Not that Lolita was "bad", no chance of that, but it exerted an impression which I would love to liken to a massive dose of LSD: lovely exasperating, trippy to the max, to a certain extent very similar to a case of migraine. Unfortunately, the black butterfly on its cover knew my dilemma and blinked with me. I brought the book, and soon envisioned myself getting stuck in the same vein of chaos of words, metaphors, excessively equivocal language and bizzare monologues once again. However, to my utmost bewilderment, Laughter turned out not very elusive as I had expected. I made hardly any endeavor to finish it all in one light read, and even had time for reflective pauses during and after reading. • 12. Cry The Beloved Country Literary Analysis In Cry, the Beloved Country, the city of Johannesburg enables Gertrude's desires to control her life, yet the desires that govern her are shamefully careless. Before Gertrude left Ndosheni, she had been surrounded by villagers who essentially knew many or all of their community's people, including her. With the fear that several people would know of or observe her actions, Gertrude was encouraged to act upon the ethical desires widely accepted by her people. On the other hand, Johannesburg has little to no sense of community–being a heavily populated city and the majority of its inhabitants strangers to one another–which allows Gertrude to pursue the amoral desires within her, and for them to occur unnoticed by relatives. When Stephen Kumalo, her brother, finally receives word of Gertrude's illness, he leaves for Johannesburg and finds her in a shabby, dirty house, crammed between similar buildings. Anxiously standing in front of his sister's door, awaiting what would be their first encounter after several months, Kumalo overhears a "laughter in the house, the kind of laughter of which one is afraid... perhaps because it is in truth bad laughter," (Paton 59 emphasis added). The bad laughter he hears is a product of Gertrude's careless desires; her undisciplined lust for men. The context in which this laughter comes from is what makes it bad, especially in Kumalo's mind, for he is not just her family, but a priest as well. Without a close–knit community to direct ... I remember as a child dressing up as my favorite Disney character or when I got too cool for princesses dressing up as the latest horror movie character. I remember going out with my parents to get candy or going to Halloween parties. But sitting here thinking about it it almost seems like a lifetime ago. I turn away from the car window to which I had been staring out at the sunset since getting in the car and slowly reach my gaze to the driver's seat and there he is, the love of my life. He sits with one hand on the steering wheel, the other rests on my thigh his thumb tracing little circles, his eyes are straight ahead and focused on the road, the car is filled with the sound of his voice for he has a habit of singing in the car which is one of the many reasons why I married this man. He looks over briefly to meet my stare alternating looking at the road and looking at me, "I can't wait to see the look on your face when you finally find out where I am taking you." We set out this morning for the destination of our honeymoon which I was told was a surprise but that didn't at all affect my constant begging that he told me. "Wouldn't you much rather see the look on my face now? All you gotta do is tell me where we are going." At this he smiles, "Sorry baby, not gonna happen. This time you've just gotta wait and see." Bergson and Davis's theories have given people an indication of what that could be. Together these philosopher's theories enlighten us to why people might laugh. Bergson and Davis's theories limit us in explaining to the fullest extent of the workings of comedy. Bergson's theory has three elements that he believes constitute why we laugh and claims, "...the mechanical encrusted upon the living," promotes laughter (Bergson 10). For instance, the example Bergson used was about a group of travelers laughing and a bystander not affiliated with the group, not laughing. Because the bystander was isolated from the group and not part of the joke, the bystander did not laugh. For this is a good example of no laughter in isolation, but there are cases where people can be alone and laugh at themselves in isolation. A person could trip over their kids toy and laugh because the toy was out of place, even though there was not another person present laughing with them. Bergson's three elements have strong observations, but there are components of it that are debatable that can limit this theory. The first limitation would be concerning that we only laugh at objects that we have stamped as human or ours. People can laugh at a variety of matters. Another issue would be with the absence of feeling coinciding with laughter because a person can claim that laughing while still feeling some sort of emotion is possible. For example, laughing about something that makes you happy, in that moment you are feeling an emotion while laughing. A person could also say that laughing is an emotion in itself. Booth uses FranГ§ois Rabelais's famous sixteenth–century comic novel Gargantua and Pantagruel as a case study for his investigation of the role of ethics in literary criticism. Through a polemics with Mikhail Bakhtin and his perhaps most influential text Rabelais and His World, Booth sets out to prove that the French novel which the Russian scholar uses as a paradigm for his definition of the carnival spirit is, because of its propensity for the ridicule of women, ultimately an unethical work. Just how significant an ethical problem laughter poses for Booth's critical methodology can be seen from the final chapter of his book where at least one of the remaining three case studies again revolves around the question of what a contemporary reader should or should not find amusing. His reading of Mark Twain's classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn begins with a reference to the novelist's rejection of moralist criticism and continues with a number of compliments about Twain's use of American colloquial idiom. Booth then adjusts the focus of his interpretation and analyzes the very end of the work in which no amount of the author's humour can conceal the latent racism of the novel's denouement. While he concedes that it might be possible to defend the book by "the attribution to Huck, not to Mark Twain, of all the ethical deficiencies" (470), Booth eventually concludes that it is the plot's ending, and not the character's words, which violates the basic ethical principles and, therefore, makes Huckleberry Finn into a critical liability. Booth's is, by no means, an isolated opinion. For many years before critical theory rehabilitated the role of ethics in literary and cultural criticism, a number of scholars, philosophers, and writers observed that laughter as a common audience response may have "an ethical edge to it" (Booth ... Not a lot of research is done with smiling and laughing because of the fact that there is no background or scientific reason for it. That is not true, there may not be no specific reason for them, but there is a scientific reason for why and when they happen. Smiling and laughing is apart of our daily lives because there are so many health benefits of smiling and laughing, people should understand what happens when we laugh, what smiles are, and the difference between the two. Although we do know what laughing is, we don't know what happens when we laugh. When people laugh a chemical called endorphins are released from your brain, these chemicals are what make people happier. Endorphins can also be called natural pain killers because of how much stress they relieve and reduce anxiety. When endorphins are released the number of cortisol cells go down. When an individual is no longer capable of laughing, he is also no longer capable of being in control of himself. This happens when a greater authority has the power to deny a person of their laughter; which, inevitably, denies him of his freedom. Ken Kesey conveys the idea that laughter and freedom go hand in hand throughout his novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. However, as soon as he arrives, his laughter is "loud and free" which demonstrates that he is boisterous and independent. However, the humor of medieval times did not just come from the court jester; and, even then, people knew humor was important to their health. One curious fact is that the word humor in medieval times was tied "to the four fluids of the body –– blood, phlegm, choler, and black bile" (Krsywicka). The people believed all these should be in balance in the person as well as in their physical world (Cameron, qtd. by Krzywicka). The individual who laughs at himself is learned Humour is marked by with, sarcasm, the realisation of human folly, or is an expression of elation and rapture. It is largely determined by our ability to laugh at something, or more specifically, the ease with which we do so. True humour is one that stems from the sheer wit of the joke itself, where irony or derision of a thing or way of life is identified, and perhaps the only way to communicate farce in human nature is through deep rumbling laughter originating from the depths of the abdomen. Laughter of such a warm, welcome and explosive nature is genuinely jovial; indeed, this may be the "real" laughter Ethel Barrymore is referring to. This kind of uninhibited laughter is arguably the product of self–deprecation or the realisation of individual failure where something amiss transpired, unknown to the collective majority. The ease with which one laughs at himself speaks volumes about his character, or the degree with which he overcomes his fragile ego or untarnished pride. In spite of this, the man who is wise need not have laughed at himself in his ascent to maturity: the pages of his development could have been creased another way. Nevertheless, a broader outlook suggests that it is when we can truly laugh at ourselves, that we have finally grown up. In The Devil's Arithmetic, Yolen used the motifs of hope and inhumane treatment to show the theme, even if you're being treated inhumanely, you should still have hope. The motif of hope is shown when Gitl says, "Without laughter, there is no hope. Without hope, there is no life." (Yolen, 101–102). This shows the theme because Gitl does not want to lose hope because, without hope, life is no fun. Another time the motif is shown is when _____. This shows the theme by proving that _____ ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shows the theme by proving that the Nazi's were bad people, just doing this for their own selfish wants. Another time the motif is shown is when the Nazi's forced the Jews to shower together in cold water, get their heads shaved, make them wear the clothes of the dead, and then force them to get numbers tattooed on their arm, saying that they're their "new names" (Yolen, 90–101). This shows the theme by showing that the Jews were being forced to do these things, and it also shows that they were being treated like animals. A final time the motif is shown is when Commandant Breuer comes to perform the "choosing", where he chooses all the really sick in the hospital to be gassed (Yolen, 122–124, 127–128, 135–141). This shows the theme by proving that the Jews were being treated like animals, and it's also showing how they were all going to be killed by the Nazi's one way or another. • 31. Happiness In A Can Analysis Happiness in a Can In a subway car full of regular people, one man stands out. While the subway regulars sitting in silence or engage in quiet conversation, one man laughs loudly. The manner and volume at which he laughs is largely noticeable, and everyone on the train car begins to laugh. All of the passengers are smiling and laughing, turning to others to share this strange but pleasant moment. Once the advertisement is nearing its end, a few of the passengers unzip their hoodies to reveal shirts with the Coca–Cola logo, and they begin giving passengers cans of their soda and cards with their signature red and white colors with a smiley face. The passengers turn to look at each other once again, still laughing and smiling, but this time in disbelief of what had just happened. While the main part of the ad brought me joy and laughter, the introduction of a product made the whole event feel fake and artificial. What does a can of soda have to do with happiness? One of the first observations I made during this ad was the kind of people featured in it. A subway car full of average people, probably commuting to work in the city or on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The infectious laughter of the man in the advertisement draws viewers in, making them laugh along, which is is a great tactic to help make a product memorable. However, the fact that there is no mention of the product until the end of the ad makes it seem like the company threw their company on at the end instead of really involving it throughout the video. It also makes the laughter shown in the commercial seem artificial in how it seems like these people on the subway are sharing a joyful moment together, but in reality it was all set up for a commercial. • 32. Humor In Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom When we think of the genre comedy, our immediate thought is usually movies that generate gales of laughter such as Airplane (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988) or great performances by comedians like Charlie Chaplin and Steve Carell. Yet, humor can make its presence felt in movies that are not archetypally included in the genre of comedy. In this essay, I will shed light on the use of comedic elements in one such movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). I will begin by citing specific examples from the movie, with references to the three theories of humor. Subsequently, I will discuss how humor impacts the implicit meaning of the film. Before delving into examples of the three theories of humor (superiority, relief and incongruity), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dr. Indiana Jones, the charismatic archeologist, is poisoned by his enemies in a nightclub and is in dire need of the antidote. The nightclub singer and leading actress of the film, Willie, has her eyes fixated on an enormous dazzling diamond. In a turn of events, both the diamond and the antidote fall into the enemy's hands. A gun goes off and in the brawl that ensues, both prized possessions fall to the ground. The nightclub attendees chaotically scramble, causing the diamond and antidote to be tossed around the floor. Both protagonists frantically jump to the ground, but Willie prioritizes the diamond, leaving Indy, who is on the verge of death, to desperately fight his foes and find his antidote. In a comedic manner, the respective items keep slipping from the grasp of the desperate duo. Willie comes in close range of the diamond before a bucket of ice cubes tips over and surrounds the diamond, much to the amusement of the audience! The scene humorously plays out a situation of life–and–death, which in reality is a somber circumstance. This is a clever use of relief theory of Humor, generating laughter through stress–release during an otherwise emotionally turbulent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell Essay Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell In his essay Shooting an Elephant, George Orwell explains how the controlling authorities in a hostile country are not controlling the country's population but are in fact a mere tool of the populous. Orwell's experience with the elephant provided the insight for his essay, and gives a clear example of the control the natives have over the authorities. The authorities in Lower Burma were there to police the state that their government controlled, but were only accomplished in being controlled by the people of the state. Orwell finds this truth in his encounter with the elephant that has ravaged parts of the city. Orwell develops a following of the native people after he finds the Indian who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Orwell could not test the elephant; if it charged him and trampled him to the ground he would be left open to laughter from the crowd. This was an unacceptable notion to Orwell, he was laughed at constantly by these people around him and he would do anything to avoid it, including shooting the elephant. "And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh. That would never do. There was only one alternative. I shoved the cartridges into the magazine and lay down on the road to get a better aim." The mere threat of laughter was the only reason Orwell shot the elephant. Not for fear of his own life but the mere chance that he might lose face in the presence of the natives was all Orwell needed to shoot the animal. This power the natives had over Orwell was compounded as Orwell was forced to watch the mighty elephant die in agony. Orwell had not wanted to shoot the animal from the start but the threat of laughter from the people around him forced him into doing their bidding. Giving into the mob would alleviate the problem of looking the fool in front of the natives, but watching the animal die set Orwell in his place. Orwell was forced to shoot the animal repeatedly, until he ran out of ammunition, further adding to the animals suffering. Orwell ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. I Got A Call From My Best Friend On February fifteenth, 2015, I got a call from my best friend, Mya. "Hey Serena!" she warmly greeted me. "How would you like to go to sleep away camp with me this summer?" I thought that sleep away camp with my best friend since diapers would be an amazing experience. "I'd love to!" I replied. Mya and I spent the whole afternoon researching sleep away camps, trying to find the right one. Finally, we found the seemingly perfect one week camp, Camp Lohikan. It had a wide variety of interesting activities, such as quad riding, jet skiing, archery, bungee jumping, horseback, theater, the list goes on and on. To our excitement, both of our parents agreed to send us tothe camp together. They even requested that we be put into the same cabin. From that day, the countdown began; only one hundred eighty seven days until camp. Almost everyday, I would wake up to find a text from Mya reading, "Can't wait until Lohikan!" to which I would reply, "Me too!" Finally, the week before camp approached. I, however, was no longer excited for camp, In fact, I was dreading the day that I had to leave for camp. This feeling was mostly because I was nervous. What if the food is gross? What if my cabin mates are rude? What if my counselor is rude? What if I get homesick? I thought. At one point I became super dramatic and asked myself, What if I die? Everyday when Mya called, however, I always told her that I couldn't wait for camp. On August twenty–first, the first day of camp had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Edgar Allan Poe Short Story Analysis Edgar Allen Poe's Hidden and Repetitive Style Edgar Allen Poe has a hidden and repetitive style through out most of his short stories. Most of his short stories are dark, or have an insane or unstable narrative. Which causes a reader to question Edgar Allen Poe's own sanity. Though with the constant abuse of opium and alcohol there is no wonder his short stories are written as they are, morbid with a dark sense of humor. This is shown through out his short stories, a few examples are "Instinct Vs Reason – A black cat", "The Business Man", and "The Island of Fae", all written by Edgar Allen Poe show that he has a repetitive style, humor, and tone even though all the stories written by Poe are completely different in content. The short story "Instinct Vs Reason – A Black Cat" sets a tone of mockery, that humans believe they are superior because they see reason higher than instinct and do not believe that animals can reason and only rely on instinct. This tone is common to see or notice within all of Edgar Allen Poe's short stories "In recent years, critics have focused not on this dramatic use of humor hut on Poe's wit, on his satire and irony, on a Poe whose humor requires an elaborate set of footnotes to be appreciated. While this approach has unearthed a number of overlooked references and "in" jokes, calling attention to Poe's divided or elitist sense of his audience, it has done this at the expense of downplaying the broader, more universal, less intellectual humor that screams out from the center of Poe's work." (Lewis, 531–532) Edgar Allen Poe gives an example of how his black cat can reason instead of only relying on instinct like his peers seem to have believed. He shows this as "That portion of the kitchen which she most frequents is accessible only by a door, which closes with what is termed a thumb–latch; these latches are rude in construction, and some force and dexterity are always requisite to force them down. But puss is in the daily habit of opening the door, which she accomplished in the following way." (Poe, 344) Edgar Allen Poe explains that his peers seem to believe that the human species no longer rely on instinct and have shielded themselves from using it as they thought the lowly ... This article covered the ideology that non–human creatures can emit laughter similar to humans. Panksepp had experimented on three various non–human creatures designed to discover whether or not they produced laughter, including a chimpanzee, rat, and less exclusively, canines (dogs). Experimenter would transmit stimuli to activate joy, and thus compare it to human emotions. "I think the more we know about the emotions of other animals, the more we will understand our own emotions," (Panksepp, 2000's). Panksepp ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
