Introduction
Corruption is a topic of interest and concern in academic circles, in the media, among people of different professions, within the civil service, among
members of parliament, politicians, government officials, members of the business and financial communities, students, foreign investors, and so on.
In other words, the term corruption is not new to Bangladesh.

It is hoped that this Study will form the basis for further research on the subject.
Literature review
The aim of the literature review has been to explore the sociological aspects of corruption in Bangladesh as represented in the literature available,
published and unpublished, dating back to 1980. Although every effort has been made to mount an extensive search of library, internet and other
resource units in AIUB , time constraints have been enormous. Consequently, the literature review is by no means a comprehensive list of a number of
literature on corruption in Bangladesh.
Since corruption in the form of the benefactor–client relationship deprives the poor of their share of resources, it is concluded that corruption is caused
by a desire to deprive the poor of their share of resources. Result and cause are combined, thus obscuring the real causes of corruption and the structural
dimensions of benefactor–client linkages.
Among several major trends which have emerged in this Study, the most striking has been the virtual absence of works dedicated to the sociological
aspects of corruption in Bangladesh. Only a single work, Bangladesh: Whose Ideas, Whose Interests? by Geoffrey D. Wood, (1994) offers a substantial
analytical section on the sociological aspects of corruption

Corruption Of Corruption
The corruption of political figures is something that many people, nationwide, believe that America has to deal with. Whether it be in local areas or
the country overall it seems as people begin to gain power they seem to become more corrupt and stray away from what they should be worried about.
To prevent this corruption from occurring, once a political figure is half way through his or her term, at least ninety percent of American citizens have
to vote on whether or not the figure is suited for their position. If voted unfit he or she will be pushed off of the top of the Washington Monument.
With this solution in place a person who is willing to hold a certain government office will start their career with only helping the citizens of the
country in mind. Hopeful someone that is only trying to hold this office to benefit him or herself or to gain power just to see where it will take them
will think twice before trying to get elected for a government position. They will be aware that half way through their term voting age American citizens
will be voting on whether or not they are a good fit for the position. Before going into the job he or she will sign a contract stating that they are aware
of this consequence. Voting on whether or not one's local or nationalpolitician is abusing his or her power is similar to voting some into the office.
Once a person is deemed corrupt by the citizens he or she is then forced to go on television and has the opportunity to explain

Both the parties in the exchange of power for privileges want their transaction to be a secret, which makes it difficult to establish how widely and
deeply corruption has penetrated into our economy and social life. Below listed are some of the characteristics.
a) Recipients and payers.
b) Extortion.
c) Lubricant of society.
d) An ethical problem.
e) Poverty reduction.
Recipients and payers
Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power and elected authority for private profit. Complaints are often heard about politicians and public officials
who accept bribes and enrich themselves privately at the expense of the common citizen. This may be at the expense of the employee or the
employer, consumer and the producer, the renter and the tenant, the one applying for a permit or asking exemption from an obligation to pay or to
deliver a product or service. All the cases might be considered to be abuse of power authority for one's own benefit.
Extortion
Most of them go a step further. They not only blame the politicians but also the public officials for willingly accepting the bribes. They often allege
that those having authority in the society ask to be bribed or give an opportunity to bribe. There is no escaping from it, if one refuses to pay, you are
bound to fall behind.
Lubricant of Society
Many believe that paying bribe is required to ensure smoother operation of the society. They think that without an occasional gift, entering into a
contract

Power And Corruption In Macbeth
"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." (John Dalberg–Acton) Power always leads to corruption, especially in the story of
Macbeth. The main character, Macbeth, becomes more and more corrupt as the story continues. He gets his first taste of power when he becomes
The Thane of Cawdor, he then begins murdering to become king, and finally begins murdering people so he can keep his power. Macbeth has very
little power at the beginning of the story. He is basically a soldier that protects the king during the war. Macbeth hated having such a small amount of
power and he began to desire more. Macbeth then encounters the three witches that tell him all about the power that he is going to gain. First they
speak of him becoming the Thane of Cawdor, and then the king. Hearing all this makes Macbeth excited yet he does not believe it to be possible that
he will acquire so much power. Then, Ross and Angus arrive with news from the king that verifies what the witches said about him becoming Thane of
Cawdor. This makes Macbeth think that what the witches said will come true and this is where corruption begins to overcome Macbeth.... Show more

He thought King Duncan would name him as heir. He is not content with the power he has so he begins to plot to kill King Duncan in order to gain
the power that he desires. At first, Macbeth has second thoughts about committing the act. He has a lot of desire to be king but does not want to
commit murder. However, when Lady Macbeth hears that he could become king, she pushes him to commit murder. Macbeth's plan of killing Duncan
to become king works out flawlessly, or so he thought, and he was named the new king of Scotland. Soon after becoming kings, he begins to become
paranoid of others taking his throne. This drives him to even more

Corruption In The Pelican Grief
Friedrich Nietzsche once said, "People who live in an age of corruption are witty and slanderous; they know that there are other kinds of murder than
by dagger or assault; they also know that whatever is well said is believed." Corruption is the abuse of a position in power intended for personal gain
or wealth. Corruption is a pressing issue in society, and has been for an extensive period of time. This is manifested in the novels The Pelican Brief
and The Burden of Proof. Both legal thriller novels depict protagonists with a passion for law, facing an issue of corruption. In John Grisham's novel,
The Pelican Brief, Darby Shaw uncovers a conspiracy linking the murder of two Supreme Court justices to The United States government. In Scott

Tom Mathews from Newsweek says "When the world's deadliest terrorist bumps off two Supreme Court justices, it is left to Darby Shaw, a Tulane law
student, to figure out a plot the FBI can't–and the White House won't–unravel" (1). Throughout the novel, Darby is being hunted by terrorists who want
to kill her for her knowledge as theorized in the brief. Darby not only struggles to discover the complete truth behind the conspiracy but she also
struggles to stay alive and hidden. Concerning Darby's conflict, corruption has resulted in violence and death among innocent people. Also in The
Pelican Brief, Darby Shaw is in a relationship with her constitutional law professor Thomas Callahan. Most of her class is too nervous to answer
Callahan's discussion questions during his lectures, "But Callahan was not in a screaming mood, and Darby Shaw was not afraid of him, and for
a split second he wondered if anyone knew he was sleeping with her" (Grisham 16). Darby Shaw and Thomas Callahan face a conflict by trying to
keep their relationship feasible and completely private. It is illegal for Callahan to be in a relationship with his student even though she is legally an
adult. He has abused his position of power as a professor by being involved in this relationship. Callahan is known for his negligent attitude and as a
result, he becomes involved in corruption. His relationship with Darby gets him involved in a new conflict, as he is eventually murdered by the terrorist,

Essay on Corruption
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
In 2010 India was ranked 87th out of 178 countries in Transparency International 's Corruption Perceptions Index
It is not easy to define corruption. But in a narrow sense, corruption is mostly concerned with ‘bribery’ and it takes several forms.
Corruption is a global phenomenon and it is omnipresent. Corruption has progressively increased and is now rampant in our society
Corruption in India is a consequence of the nexus between Bureaucracy, politics and criminals. India is now no longer considered a soft state. It has
now become a consideration state where everything can be had for a consideration. Today, the number of ministers with an honest image can... Show

Corruption In Adiga's The White Tiger
Human society is often seen as a gateway to corruption. No matter how pure an individual is, or thinks he is, he is constantly subject to falling from
morality. This concept is explored in many legends, religions, and literature ever since mankind has begun telling stories. Whether it be the Garden of
Eden or the Godfather, humanity has been fascinated with the struggle, and many times failure, of virtue against vice. No different is the tale of Mr.
Ashok in Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger, in which readers witness the eventual and anticipated downfall of the protagonist's idol figure to a man who
has embraced the social conventions and twisted ethics that he once so despised. In The White Tiger, Adiga constructs the character of Mr. Ashok

The blindly loyal driver always blames his master's faults on others or society as a whole, except for one incident. Balram overhears Ashok talking
to Uma, his girlfriend, and hears "the words 'replacement,' 'driver,' and 'local' in English" (229), indicating to him that he is in danger of losing his
job. According to Balram's personality, this is the worst betrayal, even worse than the attempt at killing him. Perhaps not in the eyes of the world, but
to the young servant, this marks the climax of Mr. Ashok's downfall into evil. It is the driving impulse for Balram's later actions, including killing his
master, partially out of self interest, partially out of revenge. Due to the nature of The White Tiger and how it is narrated in Balram's perspective,
Adiga used this detail to mark the end of both Ashok's morality and his story in the novel. In Balram's mind, no action could be more reprehensible
than the betrayal he experienced from Mr. Ashok. As the servant says himself, "you could have heard the grinding of my teeth just then" (230), and
"For every step he'd take, I'd take two" (230). At that moment Balram realizes what his master has become, and the reader realizes the extent of his

Theme Of Corruption In Lord Of The Flies
In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," by William Golding, a man is born innocent and is corrupted by society. Golding illustrates innocence and corruption
with ethical, and emotional appeals based on human nature. Group influence, a distracted society, and group influence can corrupt a man. With that
said, innocence is only temporary.
Ordinarily, individuals are born innocent, although man signify corruption by society through group influence. For example, a text in a Newsela
article reads "I ransacked. I pillaged. I took people's things by force." ("In a war, children without a childhood" 1) For instance, in Lord of the Flies,
the littluns chanted, "Kill the beast! Cut its throat! Spill the blood!" (Golding 52) You–all already see that these kids are brainwashed by Jack. When
society changes, innocence becomes lost. Overall, people around you can affect who you become.
Moreover, is a corruption of a distracted society. "Ralph is left, holding the conch, with no one but Piggy." (Golding 38) The littluns didn't realize that
they were becoming more savage each day. They were unaware and too distracted by other implements in order towards noticing what they're turning
into. In an article, a man said "Please, God, protect my family." (Kyle Hopkins 2) The family was at risk for turbulence. The man knew of the
situation, but the rest of the family was oblivious of, to the reality from the outside. Distractions expose the benevolent and inadequate in all people.
In addition to the topic, fear causes the loss of innocence leading towards corruption. "My dignity was on the floor having to grab a piece of my
dead friend and eat it in order to survive." ("I had to eat a piece of my friend to survive" 1) The man bespeaks terror onto death, remarkably he did
something inhuman in order for him to survive on the frontier. To illustrate this theme, the text in LOTF says "...great shuddering spasms of grief that
seemed to wrench his whole body." (Golding 202) This is significant because it shows that the boys fear the guilt. The boys then realize what they what
they've done, who've they killed and what atrocities they've committed. In other hands, it illustrates that a man can switch up his morals when he's
scared.

(3) The two main types are the logical slope, and the psychological slope, and it is worth taking the time to distinguish the two. b. Logical slippery
slopes exist when there are no clearly defined boundaries that can be used to draw distinctions between different cases, and thus any line drawn in
the sand between two extremes will have some degree of arbitrariness about it. Suppose that a particular company allows its employees to accept
"small" gifts from prospective suppliers. How should "small" be defined in those circumstances? Clearly a gift that has no monetary value would be
acceptable, and an expensive piece of jewelry would be unacceptable, but there exists a large gray area in between in which the acceptability or
unacceptability of a gift is not so clear.
In relation to police acceptance of gratuities, it could be argued that although there seems to be a big difference between accepting a cup of coffee and
accepting a six–figure bribe to look the other way while a murder is carried out, this is not really the case. For there is a logical slippery slope here,
given that there is only a small difference between accepting a cup of coffee, and accepting a cup of coffee and a doughnut, and only a small
difference between accepting a

Corruption And Corruption Of Corruption
In local government there is a common trend of officials bending the rules in order to attain a political goal. Therefore, an overlapping concept that
lingers in multiple governments is political corruption. Political corruption can be defined as the use of powers by government officials for
illegitimate private gain. Like all forms of American government, structure extends in a top down manner within the federal beltway (NY, DC and
large players). Consequently, parallel patterns are reflected beyond the beltway, in local authorities where policies are generally practiced. Like
centralized federal government, a parallel practice that is generally relevant in smaller government is the political corruption concept of nepotism. What
I argue is while corruption is illegal it stems from the root of emotion. Stemming from an emotional agenda, nepotism is a form of illegal political
dishonesty that has been reproduced from the earliest of political history to the smallest cities in the US. Not only is nepotism anti–democratic, it is
perpetuated in the simplest form, and offers just a moral solution.
So what is Nepotism? Nepotism is can be simply referred to the act of favoritism to a relative family member. It is typically associated in a negative
light which runs down to employment, federal work, and other places. In essence, nepotism is everywhere. In politics, it holds no place. However there
is reason to believe that patterns of a relative in the field are acts of nepotism.

Corruption In On The Waterfront
The corruption on the waterfront is the result of a leaderless group who don't know their own power. Do you agree?
Kazan's 1954 film "On the Waterfront" highlights how the corruption on the waterfront is due to the union exploiting their power. Kazan shows how
characters in the film are scared to speak out against the corruption on the docks, as the union instils fear to all workers. The unions is controlled by
Johnny Friendly who is seen as the leader, who controls everyone on the New Jersey docks. Kazan also integrates the use of symbols and metaphors to

Reasons For Corruption In Thailand
Who is responsible for the Corruption in Thailand? Thailand is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It's full of beautiful beaches, cities and
wonderful food, however it is also home to a great amount of corruption. I like to believe that the corruption in Thailand is caused by globalization, the
process where businesses or organizations gain international influence. Therefore this research is based off of the question how are big corporations
responsible for the corruption in Thailand? Big corporations are responsible for the corruption in Thailand because of bribery and violations of the
Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
What are the working conditions in the factories in Thailand? The working conditions in these corporation's factories are unacceptable. According to
the article titled "Former Nike Factory Worker Shares Story of Abusive Working Conditions" written by Hyun Soo Lee. "Noi Supalai" (a garment
worker in Thailand) "...has faced years of harsh and abusive working conditions as a garment worker in her home country of Thailand." Not only did
they go through harsh working condition but also according to the same article "It had been two months that we did not get paid." This proved that the
working conditions in Thailand were very bad and unfair to the workers. This also proves that corporations like this are causing the corruption by
letting this happen.

Corruption In Hamlet
The achievement of power with the help of corruption is an aspect in this world that is timeless, however it was a lot more evident in the time of
Shakespeare (five hundred years ago). The view of corruption is exemplified in the play Hamlet through the eyes and actions of Claudius. He is the
one who took role in carrying out a cowardly and obscure method for the murder of King Hamlet so that he can take control of all power. It is evident
that Claudius has fallen victim to the social dilemma of corruption. His uncivilized rise to power has demonstrated the roles of what a mind may do
when corrupt. In Act 1 scene 5 the ghost of King Hamlet himself states, "The serpent that did sting thy father's life now wears his crown" (I.v.39). This

By the dangerous force of corruption that enters Claudius's mind takes over his civilized manner and morality, thus allowing him to gain control of
Denmark but in a cowardly manner. Moreover, the force of corruption is seen how it can be cemented into one's society and life through the
characters such as Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. There is no truthfulness in these characters and Hamlet himself knows that and states,
"there are many confines, wards and dungeons; Denmark being one o'th' worst" (II.ii.233). The use of a metaphor to represent imprisonment not only
summarizes Hamlet's view of Claudius's corrupt kingdom but also represents his feelings of living as a victim in an unstable political ruler. This
easily can translate to our present day society where numerous large corporations (especially the ones in third world countries) feed off the corruption
in the world, to gain power and control. Nike, for one uses the corrupted society of India and forces the poverty–stricken children to do child labour for
an extremely low pay, maximizing their revenue at the same time. Consequently, many of activities that happen in this world are the cause of
corruption, be it seeking political power or corporate power corruption is something that we nowadays can also relate

Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales during the Middle Ages. "The Prologue" from The Canterbury Tales is the part of the book that sets the

are on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. He was a man of the church and did not like the corruption of the church that was happening within the church.
Among the pilgrims that are taking the trip; there is a monk and a parson. Both of the pilgrims work in the church. The Monk was corrupt while the

He was a man of God and did not corrupt the church. The Parson was poor in money but rich in the spirit. According to Chaucer he "truly knew

teaching the word of God, then the listeners would also be corrupted. "That if gold rust, what then will iron do?" (l. 510). This quote means that if
a priest, which represents the gold, is corrupted the followers of the priest, represented by the iron, would also be corrupted. The Parson also
followed what he preached. He taught the truth about Christ and would never be proud while teaching it. The Parson was one of the few pilgrims
that Chaucer admired. He admired the Parson because he was a man of God and also was a good example of the church. He was a good example by
his teachings and the way he acted. The Monk and the Parson were both similar because they held positions in the church. That was one of the only
similarities between the two. The main difference was that the Monk was a corrupted official of the church. The Parson was not corrupted and a good

Corruption In Hamlet
Mo Ibrahim once said, "Behind every corrupt politician are 10–20 corrupt businessmen". Corruption has the ability to not only ruin close family
relationships, but also cause many others to follow in the path and help the spread of corruption. This theme is seen throughout the book, Hamlet
written by William Shakespeare. As this mentality of sinful acts is evident in the antagonist, Claudius, his mentality and actions has affected many
other characters such as Hamlet, Gertrude and Ophelia. Claudius's efforts to gain power through sinful acts have caused an unstable chain of events that
leads to the kingdoms, and the royal families, ultimate demise.
Claudius's crave of authority and power causes many main characters in the book to either follow his path, or try and punish him for the choices he
has made. Corruption has the ability to blind someone from making the right choices. As Claudius's judgement leads to the decay of not only the
characters, but the country of Norway. We can see a sign of Claudius's effects after his killing of King Hamlet when Marcellus states, " Something is
rotten in the state of Denmark" (1.4. 90–91). Marcellus gives a glimpse of how Claudius's actions and the state of Denmark are connected; as by
killing King Hamlet, not only was a crime of murder, but a crime against god. This action, leads Claudius and the state of Denmark to go through many
consequential incidents that may have been a form of punishment caused by Claudius. One of the outcomes of Claudius's actions is the strange
behavior change in Hamlet. Hamlet is aware of the actions Claudius has done, and is greatly affected by this in his statement to Polonius, " Since if the
sun breeds maggots on a dead dog, kissing the corpse" (2. 2. 189–190). Hamlet uses this dead dog analogy, to show a metaphor of how the state of
Denmark has been greatly affected by the corruption of King Claudius.
To add, Claudius's actions have proved to affect not only the state of Denmark, but the mental state in many other characters. We can see this sudden
change in personality after Claudius and Gertrude's wedding in the beginning of the book. After all the announcements made by Claudius, the wedding
has been disbanded and all are

The policy limited foreign investment and stifled competition, and bribery became part and parcel of doing business. The period up to 1991 was
dubbed the "License Raj" as a result of the government 's excessive oversight of the economy. The poor often suffered most from the widespread
corruption, which diverted large amounts of public revenue intended for public works, aid, and social welfare programs. Historically, the roots of
India 's corruption came from the proliferation of licenses. The idea was to ensure economical use of resources, so you would not waste foreign
exchanges. To this day, this is what Indians have been very aware of: that the institution of licenses and permits was responsible for creating corruption
on a massive scale. India 's sprawling bureaucracy and weak institutions–the police and judiciary were ranked as the second and third most corrupt
institutions in India, respectively, after political parties–have thwarted convictions, and arguably increased incentives for bribery. In recent years, graft
pervaded society from small–scale "harassment bribes" (payments for essential social services) to scandals on a national level. At least 42 percent of
young Indians have paid a bribe, according to a 2012 Hindustan survey. There 's been corruption in India for thousands of years–it 's endemic–but what
you see is the kind of corruption changing. In the past two decades, there 's been a shift toward grand corruption: the recent scandals are

Polonius does not want Ophelia to be with Hamlet because he is young and has a great deal of time to fool around. Polonius does not agree with the
idea between Hamlet and Ophelia being together. He causes corruption to Hamlet when he tells Ophelia: "From this time / Be somewhat scanter of
your maiden presence, / Set your entreatments at a higher rate / Than a command to parley." (1.3.120–123). Polonius wants Ophelia to spend less time
with Hamlet and to talk to him less. He also tells her his love vows are not true and he is wearing nice cloths to lead a woman into filthy acts.
Hamlet is upset that Ophelia is not talking to him and sent his letters back to him. Hamlet is upset by this so he comes into her room with no hat
and his shirt undone. Hamlet grabs her and says all women are evil. Ophelia told Polonius this and Polonius was sorry for what happened and told
her: "I am sorry that with better heed and judgment / I had not quoted him. I feared he did but trifle / And meant to wreck thee." (2.2.111–113).
Polonius regrets not observing the situation first before he told Ophelia not to talk to Hamlet. Polonius thought Hamlet is messing around with
Ophelia and trying to ruin her reputation. Polonius does not want his image to get ruined. Polonius sets up Ophelia with Hamlet and he spies on
them with Claudius. Polonius tells Ophelia to read from a book so it looks like she is all alone. Polonius explains: "pious action we do sugar o'er / The
devil himself." (3.1.48–49). He says to sugar coat the evil she is doing so he does not get suspicious. This shows that Polonius will do anything to
find out why Hamlet is crazy, even if it means to make his life full of corruption. Polonius causes Hamlet to live in a corrupt

Examples Of Corruption In The Jungle
Political Corruption in The Jungle During the time period of industrialization, corruption was common and accepted by most. Immigrants would not
have true and honest trials in court. When immigrants bought houses, their agents did not inform them of interest charges, tax fees, and other
miscellaneous fees that they were going to be charged. Voting did not elect who the people thought was the best candidate, but who had enough money
to pay for the most votes. Sinclair exposed immoral tactics for corruption in his book, The Jungle. An example of corruption is when the main
character, Jurgis, in The Jungle gets in trouble for choking his wife's boss after she gets raped.(Sinclair, 180) He threatened to fire her whole family if
she told anyone. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sinclair is exposing the corruption by showing the readers that the judicial system was corrupt and immigrants were not .(Sinclair, 180) Another
example of corruption is when Jurgis and the family bought a house. Their agent did not inform them of interest or any of the taxes and fees that
the immigrants needed to pay. The family only found out when they were paying more money than the family could afford.(Sinclair, 77) This is
an example of corruption that Sinclair exposed because the family tried to pay for the house until the finance company squeezed out every little bit
of money the family had and they eventually got evicted, because the agent knowingly did not tell them about the fees. Sinclair also exposed
corruption when time came to vote and Jurgis was paid to vote for someone, and saw someone saying that they will pay someone else to vote more
than once.(Sinclair, 101) That breaks the system of voting because voters are only supposed to vote once, and for the person that the voters want to
be the next leader, not who bribes the people to vote for them. This is corruption because whoever has money to pay for votes gets elected, which
cheats the voting system. If someone wanted to get elected all that person would have needed was money so they could buy the immigrant's votes.
Voting is supposed to elect the person that the people are in favor of, not the person that paid for more

1. Why have governments individually and collectively decided to crack down on corruption? Is this crack–down a permanent change or just a
temporary phase?
a. Over a decade, Corruption has become a serious threat for every nation as it directly impacts the country's economy thereby its overall growth at all
levels. b. Corruption is considered to be a global disease which has already spread across the universe in a drastic manner and no country can be
proud to say that they are corruption free. But in the recent era, many countries have realized many unbelievable damages happened due to corruption
from small scale to large scale and decided to fight against it. c. Governments have laid down many regulations and acts ... Show more content on

Few examples are American airline industry deregulation act which put most of the major airlines under bankrupt situation and the recent 40% boom

3. Where would you draw the line between acceptable gifts and unacceptable bribes? Does this line differ among countries? Design an anti–corruption
code you could give to your employees.
a. As per many experts, it's very thin invisible line between acceptable gifts and unacceptable bribes which differs from one country to another
based on the culture. b. I would agree to the above point to an extend as culture has something built into it that manipulates the line. For example,
gifting a couple of wine bottles for clients or associates is very common in western countries whereas guanxi is widely seen in china which appears
to accept corrupt practise as normal etiquette and it's different in other countries. c. I believe that the line is visible clearly and thick enough to make
decision on gift and bribes. For me, any gift which influences the receiver's decision sooner or later for one's personal interest is called

Corruption and Bribery
Corruption and Bribery
April 29, 2015
Abstract
In this paper, I will be writing about corruption and bribery. I will define the terms and go on to explain the regulations that have been put in place to
stop corruption and bribery. I will then go on to give examples of major corruption and bribery scandals that companies have recently been in and what
has been done to punish said companies for their crime.
Intro
Corruption is defined in the Merriam–Webster Dictionary as "dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people (such as government officials
or police officers), the act of corrupting someone or something, and something that has been changed from its original form". (Merriam–Webster)

This states that countries agreed to help out countries in need if they are under a new government with a lot of corruption. In the UK they have their
own form of anti–bribery. They installed the UK Anti–Bribery Act in 2010 with the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The act states that being
bribed, the bribery of a public official, and the failure of an organization to stop bribery are punishable under law through the act. It states that the
criminal can do a maximum of ten years in prison and pay massive fines for proceeding in corruption. This Act not only punishes organizations in the
UK; it also punishes organizations that have any link to that country with a universal jurisdiction. A major concern of this Act is that in some places
bribes are common and it will affect companies that are in a global market that do business with countries that partake in such activities. Like the UK,
the United States of America also has laws regarding bribery and corruption. This is the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 or simply FCPA. This
act has two major parts to it. The first being accounting transparency requirements from the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and the other dealing with
bribery. This United States law "prohibits U.S. firms and individuals from paying bribes to foreign

The Causes Of Corruption
Accountability is needed in every field and aspect because if no one is held responsible for committing wrongful acts then it will get worse. This is
where the true issue lies; incumbents may become powerful and feel invisible because they are getting away with wrongful acts. Once that happens,
corruptions begin to take place. Corruption is a topic that has held a lot of scholars' attention in every field (criminal justice, politics, banking, etc.).
Every field has a different aspect of corruption. Socialists believe that the main cause are social and culture; that it hinders public welfare and social
development. Political scientists believe that institutions that are not transparent, low salaries for public servants and a lack of free and
well–functioning market mechanisms are precursors of corruption. Legal scholars concentrate on the nature of legal system and its administration.
Macroeconomists concentrate on frail economic institutions and lack of transparent economics and lack of transparent economic intuitions as basis.
Corruption is defined as an illegitimate exchange of resources involving the use or abuse of public or collective responsibility for private ends (gains,
benefits, profits, or privileges). This definition includes corruption between organizations and political agencies (when public power is misused) and
between organizations (when collective responsibility is abuse) (Ritcher & Burke 2007). Corruption is multidimensional and has several causes and

Corruption of Foreign Governments Essay
Corruption can be defined as "the misuse of entrusted power for personal
benefit". It can also be described as letting personal or family relationships influence
economic decision making, be it by private economic agents or by government officials.
Corruption is always kept secret and therefore individual behavior of corrupt agents is
almost impossible to observe systematically in real life. The objectives of government are
vital to the understanding of the diverse negative effects of corruption on the public
service. Corruption renders governments unable or unwilling to maximize the welfare of
the public. It distorts agents' decisions and limits the contractual space available to agents
and the government. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
General police deviance can include
brutality, discrimination, sexual harassment, intimidation, and illicit use of weapons.
However, it is not particularly obvious where brutality, discrimination, and misconduct
end and corruption begin. A corrupt principal creates allocation inefficiencies and cripples its credible
commitment to effective policies, and opens the door to opportunism. Because corruption
must be hidden from the public and is not enforced by courts it entails transaction costs,
which are larger than those from legal exchange. This suggests that corrupt contracts are
primarily relational contracts where legal exchange serves as a basis for sealing and
enforcing corrupt agreements. Legal exchange not only provides for corrupt
opportunities, but for the necessary enforcement mechanisms. Examples of such legal
exchange are long–term business exchange, belonging to the same firm or political party
or being embedded in social relationships. The latter may even comprise the engagement
in charitable institutions. Reform should not only focus on limiting opportunities for
corrupt behavior but also on impeding the enforcement of corrupt agreements. Police corruption is defined as the abuse of police authority for personal
or organizational gain. This comes in many shapes and

illegal act under the FCPA due to the fact that this support is a payment of value for those political officials. Moreover, briberies to officials as well as
gifts or kickbacks are prohibited.
Further the offering of foreign junkets and the purchasing of inspection certificates on the black market are prohibited because of the corrupt intent to
obtain or retain business with such instruments. Those engaging in the black market are generally illegally. Finally, we have to stress that the above

American act whereby every element has to be fulfilled. The FCPA is only applied if an American institution or company is involved.

A politician wants to build his new house near the lake, but the lake is circle with the forest. The regulation of cutting down the trees over at the forest
is not allowed. But, the politician uses his power and his money to bribe the people that are in charge of the environmental officials so then he can
build his house. It's not only house though, and it's not only politicians who do this. An owner of an industry might bribe the environmental officials as
well to cut down the trees and build his going–to–be–very–polluted industry. (Contributor)
The damage that is caused by corruption is huge, but it actually depends on which country we are talking about. An example would be England and
Indonesia. The corruption in England is less than in Indonesia (it's not like I'm saying that there's no corruption in England). Thus, the damage that
cost England is less than Indonesia because there's more corrupt people in Indonesia and it's also because Indonesia is a third world country. More
damages are made through corruption in third world countries than any other countries, it's because they aren't developed yet, more likely they won't
develop because of the corruption. It very well is possible to measure the damages it cost. By looking at the country's economic, social, environmental
and political development and by looking at the country's people, we could estimate just how many people have to suffer because of the corruption in
the country.

Corruption Of Corruption
The corrupt of political figures is something that many American people are concerned about. Whether one believes that this corruption has been
occurring for years or believe that it is more prevalent now, it is something that is on the minds of many people. Corruption of political figures is
something that many people, nationwide, believe that America has to deal with. Whether it be in locally or nationwide it seems as people begin to
gain power they seem to become more corrupt and stray away from what they should stand for. Many people have thought of solutions that could be
used so politicians will not become corrupt but none have been efficient so far. Therefore, I have an extraordinary solution that lessen the misconduct of
politicians at all levels.
To prevent this corruption from occurring, once a political figure is half way through his or her term, at least ninety percent of American citizens
have to vote on whether or not the figure is suited for their position. If voted unfit he or she will be sentenced to death. Within days after the he or
she will be pushed off of the top of the Washington Monument. With this solution in place a person who is willing to hold a certain government
office will start their career with only helping the citizens of the country in mind. Hopeful, someone that is only trying to hold an office to benefit
him or herself or to gain power just to see where it will take them will think twice before trying to get elected for a political

Meaning Of Police Corruption
out that a violation of a specific institutional rule or law does not in itself constitute an act of corruption (Milner, 2016, p.25). Ideally, this implies that
the act of taking a bribe by a police officer or harassing an inmate cannot be considered corruption if it does not result in a corrupting effect. Milner's
insight shows the problem of definition and application of corruption because some acts by police officers can be considered corrupt but other might
not on moral ground or law. Similarly, Newburn and Webb (1999) pointed out that police corruption is what constitutes a breach of trust bestowed on
the police. They argued that the "special trust" might be violated in two ways. First, it may be corrupted when the trust is used to provide service for
money, and secondly when the police officer commits a crime under cover of the trust. Moreover, Newburn and Webb (1999) further argued that the
definition of corruption must pay attention to both the means and the end of the activity. Ideally, Newburn and Webb (1999) offer a realistic
definition of police corruption because it looks into the "means" and "end" of an action rather than the outcome only as Milner stipulates.
Nevertheless, police corruption entails a broad perspective as defined by Punch (1985) and cited by Newburn and Webb (1999), he defines police
corruption as occurring:
"when an official receives or is promised significant advantage or reward (personal, group or organisational) for doing something that he

Corruption In The Catholic
The Vatican, situated within Rome, Italy, is the capital of the Catholic faith. Lead by a Pope, who is chosen by the Cardinals when one dies or
retires, is the source of leadership for Catholics around the world. It has also been a source for many conspiracy theories. Dan Brown even set his
Illuminati based novel Angels and Demons in the holy city of Catholics. Many others love to have Illuminati base theories set within this important
place. What people do not realize is that there is a much deeper, very real corruption going on within the walls of the sacred city. The Vatican recently
arrested two employees who worked on financial business for leaking information to two authors whose books will be published and will expose the
financial troubles of the Vatican. The books claims a misuse of money by... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While it is still debatable on whether or not the information in the expository books is trustworthy or not, there is no doubt that financial
mismanagement existed. If there had been no mismanagement, it would be very odd that Pope Francis created groups and hired others to help with
the finances and odd that he chastised employees for the debts. It seems that Pope Francis is indeed what the leadership of the Catholics needed.
He has begun changing the way things are in social concerns as well. He focuses on changing the Vatican and the leadership of the faith for the
better. Financial corrections and the end of corruption is just one of the many ways he is doing so. While it is not the deep conspiracy corruption
many in the world fantasize about, the financial troubles because of officials not wanting to pay so much or whatever truly happened is still a
troubling corruption in itself. Those who work for the papacy need to embody the traits that believers would expect of someone who works for the
Catholic faith. Pope Francis is the one who will make sure that that reform is

Zinn's Corruption
In the chapters 11 and 12 of A People's History Of The United States, Zinn's underlying point is the corruption within our own government and the
problem of American Imperialism, especially during times of war. In order to support these points, Zinn highlights various points in history and stories
that relevant to the topic.
One such way Zinn brings these ideas to light is by discussing how, while some investors built their fortune legally; some investors would actually buy
the collaboration from the government for large portions of money. For instance, Zinn points out of Thomas Edison, a prominent figure in American
history, actually bribed politicians from New Jersey by guaranteeing he would pay them nearly $1,000 per person, in exchange for receiving suitable
legislation. Zinn points out various other individuals who bribed government officials, and by doing so, he allows the reader to comprehend the level of
corruption inside our government that continues to exist even today. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One way the government did this was through schooling, and Zinn supports this by making a reference to a quote from Joel Spring, from in his book
Education and the Rise of the Corporate State, which states that it is not merely a coincidence that 19th century schools have come to follow a
factory–like system, from expecting to be obedient to authority to the hours at which students attend. The government would use schools to teach future
workers to be loyal, obedient and submissive to authority, and future laws would even allow school officials to gain control over the content of their
district textbooks. By allowing and encouraging this, the government wished to create a 'perfect', little future of workers would lack the rebelliousness

When people think of or discuss issues within policing in the United States, one of the main topics that has been around for as long as the police

The FBI arranged an undercover agent and vehicle that was equipped with cameras, to be stopped by Fairview Township PD. Baker had the vehicle
towed, and without a warrant and disregarding orders from an FBI agent not to search the vehicle, he searched the vehicle and stole $3,000 from a
gym bag that was in the trunk. Baker was arrested by the FBI two days later, and confessed to both incidents. (U.S. Attorney's Office Middle District of
Pennsylvania. "Former Police Officer Convicted On Corruption Charges".Justice.gov.U.S. Department Of Justice, 9/15/2017). Both these articles
show that police corruption is still present in our society and police departments, and even veteran officers can be involved. They also show that
many times corrupt officers do tell other officers what they do, and sometimes attempt to bring other officers into their schemes. Which does not
make it any easier to investigate, because of the strong bond and loyalty between officers, and the fear of being labeled as a "rat" or someone the
brotherhood can't trust. While police corruption has been present in society for as long as there have been police, there have also been measures put
in place to investigate and deter this behavior. The Knapp Commission was created in 1970 to investigate and control police corruption in New York
City, when it was flooded with corruption. It was discovered that police would allow illegal gambling, if

Examples Of Corruption Caused By Power
The Corruption Caused by Power
In 1887, historian John Dalberg–Acton asserted, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." This theme has a prominent role in
history, literature, and even current times. Certainly, many instances have occurred where once someone earns authority, they allow it to get to their
head and do things they would not have done otherwise. Similarly, it is also seen that when one is inferior or beneath others, they receive a hunger
for power. Specifically, a few prime examples of people who became corrupted because of their dominance include Marc Antony from Shakespeare's
The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Joseph Stalin, and Kim Jong–un. These rulers negatively impacted the places they ruled all because of their abusive
tendencies that came with dominance.
To begin, an example of the effect superiority has on thecorruption of a person can be seen in William Shakespeare's play through the character Marc
Antony, who went from obedient follower to scheming deceiver when faced with the decision of control. At first, Shakespeare portrays Antony as the
total opposite of a leader. This is quickly represented in his second line in the play: "When Caesar says 'Do this,' it is performed" (Shakespeare,
1.2.10). Here, it shows how when Caesar puts Antony under a lesser position, he is submissive and does whatever someone above him asks. His
compliance demonstrates how when there is a ruler with more superiority, those under that superiority fall

Susceptibility to Corruption
Power Corrupts?
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men" ( Martin ). That quote is made famous by
Lord Acton, who was a Catholic historian, politician, and writer. Lord Acton was one of the first people to understand the importance ofcorruption. The
men Lord Acton talks about is not just a male, but in fact all of mankind. Allhuman beings are susceptible to corruption, and can fall down that dark
past. Those individuals that are corrupted by power however do not start of as evil. (Moreell) Like all corrupt people they begin as honest humans
who want to strengthen their country or want to help others. The honest leader begins to receive offers or bribes for things that the wealthy want to
manipulate. After a while, the line between right and wrong seem to blur, and it gets harder to distinguish that fine line. That person refuses the
bribes at first, but they keep calling his/her name, begging for him/her to take them. Time seems to pass slowly and those bribes begin to take hold
over the leaders mind so that it becomes justified and acceptable behavior. That overseer starts to impose restrictive laws on the middle class people
and small business. As a result of this restriction, it helps the upper class, and also big business. In turn those once small choices start to make that
being corrupt. Eventually that human being loses their morals and creates a corrupt society. If does not matter if those people are man,

Police Corruption: The Rampart Scandal
The issue of police corruption has been problematic for a great while. It has an array of forms. Bribery, brutality, and the engagement in criminal
activities are a few forms of police corruption. There have been numerous incidents of corruption over the past several years. One of these infamous
police scandals is known as the Rampart scandal. The Rampart scandal is a series of corruptive events orchestrated by the Rampart CRASH unit of the
L.A.P.D. This elite anti–gang unit was created to control gang violence and gang criminal activity (Kirk & Boyer, 2001). This scandal took place
over a course of a couple years. During this period, police officers assigned to the CRASH unit were involved in committing murder, robbery, drug theft
from evidence holding, and other crimes (Kirk & Boyer, 2001). All the officers involved in the Rampart scandal worked undercover and had ties to

Corruption
Corruption can mean so many things and can be interpreted in countless ways but in the most simplistic way of explaining what corruption is, it is the
misuse of judgment, the struggle between what is right and what is wrong. No one really knows what led to corruption, some say it was religious
reasons that led to corruption, meaning the devil, while others believe it to be something else. People in today's society tend to relate this topic to politics
because it is most commonly occurs within that faction of society. Corruption is a reoccurring them throughout The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter, it

McCarthyism, you could say is one of those things that shaped the way society acts. Not just in the Crucible did the people in society follow the
"crowd", but also in the Scarlet Letter. Everyone gathered at that prison door, including women and children, all to see this huge spectacle about
Hester the adulterer, even if they didn't know what was going on or who Hester even was, but they gathered and they judged. Account for the
Sacco & Vanzetti Case in 1921, because they were Italian immigrants and known for being radicals the were convicted and executed, even though
there was no evidence of them committing the crime. This all took place during what is known as the Red Scare, a time of fear. Fear is one of the
greatest factors contributing to corruption of society, of people. John Steinbeck (Good Reads, quote 6) once said, "Power does not corrupt. Fear
corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power.", it doesn't necessarily state that power has nothing to do with corruption but is more a factor
contributing with fear. Furthermore, societies corruption involving financial gains, whether it be not paying takes or taking bribes, or committing a
crime to gain money. Greed has a lot to do with this form of corruption, it's the want, not the need of money that usually drives people to do wrong, it

Theme Of Corruption In The Miller
Consistently dishonest to his customers, The Miller is a great example of this kind of corruption. The main job of The Miller is to sell grain to
families, thus providing them with food. The moral expectation of this job seems high, as families who must pay for grain are of a lower class. As
a result, The Miller is most likely seen as a 'savior' to many people of the lower class. Chaucer, at first, supports this saying, "His mighty mouth was
like a furnace door. / A wrangler and buffoon, he had a store / Of tavern stories, filthy in the main" (Chaucer 575
–577). In other words, The Miller
seems to be an overall well–rounded, humorous guy. So much so, that no one has any reason to think that he might be cheating them out of their money.
Yet, in the very next line, Chaucer describes him in a much different way: "His was a master–hand at stealing grain. / He felt it with his thumb and
thus he knew / Its quality and took three times his due" ("The Miller" 578–580). Obviously, The Miller is receiving more money than he actually
deserves because he places his thumb on the scale, making the grain weigh more. Although no one is aware, The Miller constantly takes advantage of
his clients by making them pay more than their fair share. Although he does not appear corrupt to most, The Miller is dishonest and cheats many
people who are involved in his trade.
Chaucer also stretches this theme seen in The Miller into The Doctor's prologue. In general, Doctor's are viewed a good, moral,

The Jungle Corruption
While reading the The Jungle, it does not take long to determine that the city government was corrupt. During the early 1900s, the government leaders
did not seem to care about the welfare of the city, and this is seen through the fact that they did not require enough from the city inspectors, and they
neglected to educated the citizens on how election process worked, and the views of the candidates. They failed to accomplish these things because
they did not care about the welfare of the people, they only did it for the money and power. The hardships in the Americanfactory worker's life were
caused by corruption in political offices.
The average factory worker was making usually less then a dollar a day, so because of this they were not able to afford food all the time. Before the
family moved to America they would buy healthy and hearty foods, and with this food you would not have to eat much before you were full.
However, in chapter 14 Sinclair writes "Some of it they would make into "smoked" sausage–but as the smoking took time, and was therefore

Introduction
Corruption can be defined as a spiritual or moral deviation from an ideal. Corruption come in different styles and that include bribery and funds
embezzlement.
Corruption has been the number one menace in many countries of the world. It impacts countries in many ways, impacting economy and development
in a negative way. Corruption tends to raise the cost of government and may lower the rate of infrastructure growth. Most importantly, corruption has a
negative impact on capitalism and foreign investment in that; it changes the environment which in turns affects decisions and actions. Corruption causes

Bureaucratic harassment such as the waiting time for a permit and statutory tax and tariff rates are other forms of corruption.
Countries have different laws, making some actions viewed in our capitalistic society as inappropriate, to be appropriate in a socialism or communistic
society. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) defines corruption as "intentionally to offer, promise or give any
undue pecuniary or other advantage....to a foreign public official...in order that the official act or refrain from acting in relation to the performance of
official duties in order to obtain or retain business or other improper advantage in the conduct of international business" (Raeschke –Kessler &
Gottwald, n.d.). This measure criminalizes bribery in international transactions, however, influence peddling (a practice in which undue advantage of
giving, promising or selling of an undue advantage to a person who will sell their influence to the government) is not covered by OECD definition.
An effect the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) of 1977 found that "United States direct investment in more corrupt countries grew more
slowly than in other countries" (Wei, 2000). China is an interesting example. China is a large country with a vast supply of cheap labor. The country
also has a great deal of rampant corruption. There has been a large amount of foreign

In other words, the term corruption is not new to Bangladesh. We all know that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is hoped that this Study will form the basis for further research on the subject. Literature review The aim of the literature review has been to explore the sociological aspects of corruption in Bangladesh as represented in the literature available, published and unpublished, dating back to 1980. Although every effort has been made to mount an extensive search of library, internet and other resource units in AIUB , time constraints have been enormous. Consequently, the literature review is by no means a comprehensive list of a number of literature on corruption in Bangladesh. Since corruption in the form of the benefactor–client relationship deprives the poor of their share of resources, it is concluded that corruption is caused by a desire to deprive the poor of their share of resources. Result and cause are combined, thus obscuring the real causes of corruption and the structural dimensions of benefactor–client linkages. Among several major trends which have emerged in this Study, the most striking has been the virtual absence of works dedicated to the sociological aspects of corruption in Bangladesh. Only a single work, Bangladesh: Whose Ideas, Whose Interests? by Geoffrey D. Wood, (1994) offers a substantial analytical section on the sociological aspects of corruption

  • 3. Corruption Of Corruption The corruption of political figures is something that many people, nationwide, believe that America has to deal with. Whether it be in local areas or the country overall it seems as people begin to gain power they seem to become more corrupt and stray away from what they should be worried about. To prevent this corruption from occurring, once a political figure is half way through his or her term, at least ninety percent of American citizens have to vote on whether or not the figure is suited for their position. If voted unfit he or she will be pushed off of the top of the Washington Monument. With this solution in place a person who is willing to hold a certain government office will start their career with only helping the citizens of the country in mind. Hopeful someone that is only trying to hold this office to benefit him or herself or to gain power just to see where it will take them will think twice before trying to get elected for a government position. They will be aware that half way through their term voting age American citizens will be voting on whether or not they are a good fit for the position. Before going into the job he or she will sign a contract stating that they are aware of this consequence. Voting on whether or not one's local or nationalpolitician is abusing his or her power is similar to voting some into the office. Once a person is deemed corrupt by the citizens he or she is then forced to go on television and has the opportunity to explain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Below listed are some of the characteristics. a) Recipients and payers. b) Extortion. c) Lubricant of society. d) An ethical problem. e) Poverty reduction. Recipients and payers Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power and elected authority for private profit. Complaints are often heard about politicians and public officials who accept bribes and enrich themselves privately at the expense of the common citizen. This may be at the expense of the employee or the employer, consumer and the producer, the renter and the tenant, the one applying for a permit or asking exemption from an obligation to pay or to deliver a product or service. All the cases might be considered to be abuse of power authority for one's own benefit. Extortion Most of them go a step further. They not only blame the politicians but also the public officials for willingly accepting the bribes. They often allege that those having authority in the society ask to be bribed or give an opportunity to bribe. There is no escaping from it, if one refuses to pay, you are bound to fall behind. Lubricant of Society Many believe that paying bribe is required to ensure smoother operation of the society. They think that without an occasional gift, entering into a contract

The main character, Macbeth, becomes more and more corrupt as the story continues. He gets his first taste of power when he becomes The Thane of Cawdor, he then begins murdering to become king, and finally begins murdering people so he can keep his power. Macbeth has very little power at the beginning of the story. He is basically a soldier that protects the king during the war. Macbeth hated having such a small amount of power and he began to desire more. Macbeth then encounters the three witches that tell him all about the power that he is going to gain. First they speak of him becoming the Thane of Cawdor, and then the king. Hearing all this makes Macbeth excited yet he does not believe it to be possible that he will acquire so much power. Corruption In The Pelican Grief Friedrich Nietzsche once said, "People who live in an age of corruption are witty and slanderous; they know that there are other kinds of murder than by dagger or assault; they also know that whatever is well said is believed." Corruption is the abuse of a position in power intended for personal gain or wealth. Corruption is a pressing issue in society, and has been for an extensive period of time. This is manifested in the novels The Pelican Brief and The Burden of Proof. Both legal thriller novels depict protagonists with a passion for law, facing an issue of corruption. Darby not only struggles to discover the complete truth behind the conspiracy but she also struggles to stay alive and hidden. Concerning Darby's conflict, corruption has resulted in violence and death among innocent people. Also in The Pelican Brief, Darby Shaw is in a relationship with her constitutional law professor Thomas Callahan. Most of her class is too nervous to answer Callahan's discussion questions during his lectures, "But Callahan was not in a screaming mood, and Darby Shaw was not afraid of him, and for a split second he wondered if anyone knew he was sleeping with her" (Grisham 16). Darby Shaw and Thomas Callahan face a conflict by trying to keep their relationship feasible and completely private. It is illegal for Callahan to be in a relationship with his student even though she is legally an adult. He has abused his position of power as a professor by being involved in this relationship. • 9. Corruption In Adiga's The White Tiger Human society is often seen as a gateway to corruption. No matter how pure an individual is, or thinks he is, he is constantly subject to falling from morality. This concept is explored in many legends, religions, and literature ever since mankind has begun telling stories. Whether it be the Garden of Eden or the Godfather, humanity has been fascinated with the struggle, and many times failure, of virtue against vice. No different is the tale of Mr. Ashok in Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger, in which readers witness the eventual and anticipated downfall of the protagonist's idol figure to a man who has embraced the social conventions and twisted ethics that he once so despised. Balram overhears Ashok talking to Uma, his girlfriend, and hears "the words 'replacement,' 'driver,' and 'local' in English" (229), indicating to him that he is in danger of losing his job. According to Balram's personality, this is the worst betrayal, even worse than the attempt at killing him. Perhaps not in the eyes of the world, but to the young servant, this marks the climax of Mr. Ashok's downfall into evil. It is the driving impulse for Balram's later actions, including killing his master, partially out of self interest, partially out of revenge. Due to the nature of The White Tiger and how it is narrated in Balram's perspective, Adiga used this detail to mark the end of both Ashok's morality and his story in the novel. In Balram's mind, no action could be more reprehensible than the betrayal he experienced from Mr. Ashok. As the servant says himself, "you could have heard the grinding of my teeth just then" (230), and "For every step he'd take, I'd take two" (230). • 10. Theme Of Corruption In Lord Of The Flies In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," by William Golding, a man is born innocent and is corrupted by society. Golding illustrates innocence and corruption with ethical, and emotional appeals based on human nature. Group influence, a distracted society, and group influence can corrupt a man. With that said, innocence is only temporary. Ordinarily, individuals are born innocent, although man signify corruption by society through group influence. For example, a text in a Newsela article reads "I ransacked. I pillaged. I took people's things by force." ("In a war, children without a childhood" 1) For instance, in Lord of the Flies, the littluns chanted, "Kill the beast! Cut its throat! Spill the blood!" (Golding 52) You–all already see that these kids are brainwashed by Jack. When society changes, innocence becomes lost. Overall, people around you can affect who you become. Moreover, is a corruption of a distracted society. "Ralph is left, holding the conch, with no one but Piggy." (Golding 38) The littluns didn't realize that they were becoming more savage each day. They were unaware and too distracted by other implements in order towards noticing what they're turning into. In an article, a man said "Please, God, protect my family." (Kyle Hopkins 2) The family was at risk for turbulence. The man knew of the situation, but the rest of the family was oblivious of, to the reality from the outside. Distractions expose the benevolent and inadequate in all people. In addition to the topic, fear causes the loss of innocence leading towards corruption. "My dignity was on the floor having to grab a piece of my dead friend and eat it in order to survive." ("I had to eat a piece of my friend to survive" 1) The man bespeaks terror onto death, remarkably he did something inhuman in order for him to survive on the frontier. To illustrate this theme, the text in LOTF says "...great shuddering spasms of grief that seemed to wrench his whole body." (Golding 202) This is significant because it shows that the boys fear the guilt. The boys then realize what they what they've done, who've they killed and what atrocities they've committed. In other hands, it illustrates that a man can switch up his morals when he's scared. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(3) The two main types are the logical slope, and the psychological slope, and it is worth taking the time to distinguish the two. b. Logical slippery slopes exist when there are no clearly defined boundaries that can be used to draw distinctions between different cases, and thus any line drawn in the sand between two extremes will have some degree of arbitrariness about it. Suppose that a particular company allows its employees to accept "small" gifts from prospective suppliers. How should "small" be defined in those circumstances? Clearly a gift that has no monetary value would be acceptable, and an expensive piece of jewelry would be unacceptable, but there exists a large gray area in between in which the acceptability or unacceptability of a gift is not so clear. In relation to police acceptance of gratuities, it could be argued that although there seems to be a big difference between accepting a cup of coffee and accepting a six–figure bribe to look the other way while a murder is carried out, this is not really the case. For there is a logical slippery slope here, given that there is only a small difference between accepting a cup of coffee, and accepting a cup of coffee and a doughnut, and only a small difference between accepting a ... • 13. Corruption And Corruption Of Corruption In local government there is a common trend of officials bending the rules in order to attain a political goal. Therefore, an overlapping concept that lingers in multiple governments is political corruption. Political corruption can be defined as the use of powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain. Like all forms of American government, structure extends in a top down manner within the federal beltway (NY, DC and large players). Consequently, parallel patterns are reflected beyond the beltway, in local authorities where policies are generally practiced. Like centralized federal government, a parallel practice that is generally relevant in smaller government is the political corruption concept of nepotism. What I argue is while corruption is illegal it stems from the root of emotion. Stemming from an emotional agenda, nepotism is a form of illegal political dishonesty that has been reproduced from the earliest of political history to the smallest cities in the US. Not only is nepotism anti–democratic, it is perpetuated in the simplest form, and offers just a moral solution. So what is Nepotism? Nepotism is can be simply referred to the act of favoritism to a relative family member. It is typically associated in a negative light which runs down to employment, federal work, and other places. In essence, nepotism is everywhere. In politics, it holds no place. However there is reason to believe that patterns of a relative in the field are acts of nepotism. ... Kazan shows how characters in the film are scared to speak out against the corruption on the docks, as the union instils fear to all workers. The unions is controlled by Johnny Friendly who is seen as the leader, who controls everyone on the New Jersey docks. • 17. Corruption In Hamlet The achievement of power with the help of corruption is an aspect in this world that is timeless, however it was a lot more evident in the time of Shakespeare (five hundred years ago). The view of corruption is exemplified in the play Hamlet through the eyes and actions of Claudius. He is the one who took role in carrying out a cowardly and obscure method for the murder of King Hamlet so that he can take control of all power. It is evident that Claudius has fallen victim to the social dilemma of corruption. His uncivilized rise to power has demonstrated the roles of what a mind may do when corrupt. In Act 1 scene 5 the ghost of King Hamlet himself states, "The serpent that did sting thy father's life now wears his crown" (I.v.39). This line ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the dangerous force of corruption that enters Claudius's mind takes over his civilized manner and morality, thus allowing him to gain control of Denmark but in a cowardly manner. Moreover, the force of corruption is seen how it can be cemented into one's society and life through the characters such as Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. There is no truthfulness in these characters and Hamlet himself knows that and states, "there are many confines, wards and dungeons; Denmark being one o'th' worst" (II.ii.233). The use of a metaphor to represent imprisonment not only summarizes Hamlet's view of Claudius's corrupt kingdom but also represents his feelings of living as a victim in an unstable political ruler. This easily can translate to our present day society where numerous large corporations (especially the ones in third world countries) feed off the corruption in the world, to gain power and control. Nike, for one uses the corrupted society of India and forces the poverty–stricken children to do child labour for an extremely low pay, maximizing their revenue at the same time. This quote means that if a priest, which represents the gold, is corrupted the followers of the priest, represented by the iron, would also be corrupted. The Parson also followed what he preached. He taught the truth about Christ and would never be proud while teaching it. The Parson was one of the few pilgrims that Chaucer admired. He admired the Parson because he was a man of God and also was a good example of the church. He was a good example by his teachings and the way he acted. The Monk and the Parson were both similar because they held positions in the church. That was one of the only similarities between the two. • 19. Corruption In Hamlet Mo Ibrahim once said, "Behind every corrupt politician are 10–20 corrupt businessmen". Corruption has the ability to not only ruin close family relationships, but also cause many others to follow in the path and help the spread of corruption. This theme is seen throughout the book, Hamlet written by William Shakespeare. As this mentality of sinful acts is evident in the antagonist, Claudius, his mentality and actions has affected many other characters such as Hamlet, Gertrude and Ophelia. Claudius's efforts to gain power through sinful acts have caused an unstable chain of events that leads to the kingdoms, and the royal families, ultimate demise. Claudius's crave of authority and power causes many main characters in the book to either follow his path, or try and punish him for the choices he has made. Corruption has the ability to blind someone from making the right choices. As Claudius's judgement leads to the decay of not only the characters, but the country of Norway. We can see a sign of Claudius's effects after his killing of King Hamlet when Marcellus states, " Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (1.4. 90–91). Marcellus gives a glimpse of how Claudius's actions and the state of Denmark are connected; as by killing King Hamlet, not only was a crime of murder, but a crime against god. This action, leads Claudius and the state of Denmark to go through many consequential incidents that may have been a form of punishment caused by Claudius. One of the outcomes of Claudius's actions is the strange behavior change in Hamlet. Hamlet is aware of the actions Claudius has done, and is greatly affected by this in his statement to Polonius, " Since if the sun breeds maggots on a dead dog, kissing the corpse" (2. 2. 189–190). Hamlet uses this dead dog analogy, to show a metaphor of how the state of Denmark has been greatly affected by the corruption of King Claudius. To add, Claudius's actions have proved to affect not only the state of Denmark, but the mental state in many other characters. We can see this sudden change in personality after Claudius and Gertrude's wedding in the beginning of the book. When immigrants bought houses, their agents did not inform them of interest charges, tax fees, and other miscellaneous fees that they were going to be charged. Voting did not elect who the people thought was the best candidate, but who had enough money to pay for the most votes. Sinclair exposed immoral tactics for corruption in his book, The Jungle. Their agent did not inform them of interest or any of the taxes and fees that the immigrants needed to pay. The family only found out when they were paying more money than the family could afford.(Sinclair, 77) This is an example of corruption that Sinclair exposed because the family tried to pay for the house until the finance company squeezed out every little bit of money the family had and they eventually got evicted, because the agent knowingly did not tell them about the fees. Sinclair also exposed corruption when time came to vote and Jurgis was paid to vote for someone, and saw someone saying that they will pay someone else to vote more than once.(Sinclair, 101) That breaks the system of voting because voters are only supposed to vote once, and for the person that the voters want to be the next leader, not who bribes the people to vote for them. This is corruption because whoever has money to pay for votes gets elected, which cheats the voting system. The act states that being bribed, the bribery of a public official, and the failure of an organization to stop bribery are punishable under law through the act. It states that the criminal can do a maximum of ten years in prison and pay massive fines for proceeding in corruption. This Act not only punishes organizations in the UK; it also punishes organizations that have any link to that country with a universal jurisdiction. A major concern of this Act is that in some places bribes are common and it will affect companies that are in a global market that do business with countries that partake in such activities. This is where the true issue lies; incumbents may become powerful and feel invisible because they are getting away with wrongful acts. Once that happens, corruptions begin to take place. Corruption is a topic that has held a lot of scholars' attention in every field (criminal justice, politics, banking, etc.). Every field has a different aspect of corruption. Socialists believe that the main cause are social and culture; that it hinders public welfare and social development. Political scientists believe that institutions that are not transparent, low salaries for public servants and a lack of free and well–functioning market mechanisms are precursors of corruption. Legal scholars concentrate on the nature of legal system and its administration. Macroeconomists concentrate on frail economic institutions and lack of transparent economics and lack of transparent economic intuitions as basis. Corruption is defined as an illegitimate exchange of resources involving the use or abuse of public or collective responsibility for private ends (gains, benefits, profits, or privileges). Whether one believes that this corruption has been occurring for years or believe that it is more prevalent now, it is something that is on the minds of many people. Corruption of political figures is something that many people, nationwide, believe that America has to deal with. Whether it be in locally or nationwide it seems as people begin to gain power they seem to become more corrupt and stray away from what they should stand for. Many people have thought of solutions that could be used so politicians will not become corrupt but none have been efficient so far. Therefore, I have an extraordinary solution that lessen the misconduct of politicians at all levels. To prevent this corruption from occurring, once a political figure is half way through his or her term, at least ninety percent of American citizens have to vote on whether or not the figure is suited for their position. • 33. Meaning Of Police Corruption out that a violation of a specific institutional rule or law does not in itself constitute an act of corruption (Milner, 2016, p.25). Ideally, this implies that the act of taking a bribe by a police officer or harassing an inmate cannot be considered corruption if it does not result in a corrupting effect. Milner's insight shows the problem of definition and application of corruption because some acts by police officers can be considered corrupt but other might not on moral ground or law. Similarly, Newburn and Webb (1999) pointed out that police corruption is what constitutes a breach of trust bestowed on the police. They argued that the "special trust" might be violated in two ways. First, it may be corrupted when the trust is used to provide service for money, and secondly when the police officer commits a crime under cover of the trust. Moreover, Newburn and Webb (1999) further argued that the definition of corruption must pay attention to both the means and the end of the activity. Ideally, Newburn and Webb (1999) offer a realistic definition of police corruption because it looks into the "means" and "end" of an action rather than the outcome only as Milner stipulates. Nevertheless, police corruption entails a broad perspective as defined by Punch (1985) and cited by Newburn and Webb (1999), he defines police corruption as occurring: "when an official receives or is promised significant advantage or reward (personal, group or organisational) for doing something that he ... One way the government did this was through schooling, and Zinn supports this by making a reference to a quote from Joel Spring, from in his book Education and the Rise of the Corporate State, which states that it is not merely a coincidence that 19th century schools have come to follow a factory–like system, from expecting to be obedient to authority to the hours at which students attend. The government would use schools to teach future workers to be loyal, obedient and submissive to authority, and future laws would even allow school officials to gain control over the content of their district textbooks. By allowing and encouraging this, the government wished to create a 'perfect', little future of workers would lack the rebelliousness and outspokenness of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Police Corruption And Corruption When people think of or discuss issues within policing in the United States, one of the main topics that has been around for as long as the police have, is corruption. Police corruption has been defined as the abuse of police authority for personal gain ("Police Corruption and Misconduct." West's Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2. 2008. The Gale Group 4 Dec. 2017) .Corruption can be as limited as one officer, or can be group of officers as well. There is the rotten apple theory, which attempts to explainpolice corruption and where it comes from. While all corruption fits under abuse of authority, there are different ways in which the police can be corrupt. Corruption can fit many different scenarios and situations, from drugs,... Baker had the vehicle towed, and without a warrant and disregarding orders from an FBI agent not to search the vehicle, he searched the vehicle and stole $3,000 from a gym bag that was in the trunk. Baker was arrested by the FBI two days later, and confessed to both incidents. (U.S. Attorney's Office Middle District of Pennsylvania. "Former Police Officer Convicted On Corruption Charges".Justice.gov.U.S. Department Of Justice, 9/15/2017). Both these articles show that police corruption is still present in our society and police departments, and even veteran officers can be involved. They also show that many times corrupt officers do tell other officers what they do, and sometimes attempt to bring other officers into their schemes. Which does not make it any easier to investigate, because of the strong bond and loyalty between officers, and the fear of being labeled as a "rat" or someone the brotherhood can't trust. While police corruption has been present in society for as long as there have been police, there have also been measures put in place to investigate and deter this behavior. The Knapp Commission was created in 1970 to investigate and control police corruption in New York City, when it was flooded with corruption. It was discovered that police would allow illegal gambling, if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Examples Of Corruption Caused By Power The Corruption Caused by Power In 1887, historian John Dalberg–Acton asserted, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." This theme has a prominent role in history, literature, and even current times. Certainly, many instances have occurred where once someone earns authority, they allow it to get to their head and do things they would not have done otherwise. Similarly, it is also seen that when one is inferior or beneath others, they receive a hunger for power. Specifically, a few prime examples of people who became corrupted because of their dominance include Marc Antony from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Joseph Stalin, and Kim Jong–un. These rulers negatively impacted the places they ruled all because of their abusive tendencies that came with dominance. To begin, an example of the effect superiority has on thecorruption of a person can be seen in William Shakespeare's play through the character Marc Antony, who went from obedient follower to scheming deceiver when faced with the decision of control. At first, Shakespeare portrays Antony as the total opposite of a leader. This is quickly represented in his second line in the play: "When Caesar says 'Do this,' it is performed" (Shakespeare, 1.2.10). Here, it shows how when Caesar puts Antony under a lesser position, he is submissive and does whatever someone above him asks. His compliance demonstrates how when there is a ruler with more superiority, those under that superiority fall ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Susceptibility to Corruption Power Corrupts? "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men" ( Martin ). That quote is made famous by Lord Acton, who was a Catholic historian, politician, and writer. Lord Acton was one of the first people to understand the importance ofcorruption. The men Lord Acton talks about is not just a male, but in fact all of mankind. Allhuman beings are susceptible to corruption, and can fall down that dark past. Those individuals that are corrupted by power however do not start of as evil. (Moreell) Like all corrupt people they begin as honest humans who want to strengthen their country or want to help others. The honest leader begins to receive offers or bribes for things that the wealthy want to manipulate. After a while, the line between right and wrong seem to blur, and it gets harder to distinguish that fine line. That person refuses the bribes at first, but they keep calling his/her name, begging for him/her to take them. Time seems to pass slowly and those bribes begin to take hold over the leaders mind so that it becomes justified and acceptable behavior. That overseer starts to impose restrictive laws on the middle class people and small business. As a result of this restriction, it helps the upper class, and also big business. In turn those once small choices start to make that being corrupt. Eventually that human being loses their morals and creates a corrupt society. If does not matter if those people are man, ... • 40. Corruption In The Crucible Kristina Garcia Mrs. Herrera English III December 11, 2016 Corruption Corruption can mean so many things and can be interpreted in countless ways but in the most simplistic way of explaining what corruption is, it is the misuse of judgment, the struggle between what is right and what is wrong. No one really knows what led to corruption, some say it was religious reasons that led to corruption, meaning the devil, while others believe it to be something else. People in today's society tend to relate this topic to politics because it is most commonly occurs within that faction of society. Corruption is a reoccurring them throughout The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter, it shows through the political, religious, financial, and personal reasons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McCarthyism, you could say is one of those things that shaped the way society acts. Not just in the Crucible did the people in society follow the "crowd", but also in the Scarlet Letter. Everyone gathered at that prison door, including women and children, all to see this huge spectacle about Hester the adulterer, even if they didn't know what was going on or who Hester even was, but they gathered and they judged. Account for the Sacco & Vanzetti Case in 1921, because they were Italian immigrants and known for being radicals the were convicted and executed, even though there was no evidence of them committing the crime. This all took place during what is known as the Red Scare, a time of fear. Fear is one of the greatest factors contributing to corruption of society, of people. John Steinbeck (Good Reads, quote 6) once said, "Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power.", it doesn't necessarily state that power has nothing to do with corruption but is more a factor contributing with fear. Furthermore, societies corruption involving financial gains, whether it be not paying takes or taking bribes, or committing a crime to gain money. Greed has a lot to do with this form of corruption, it's the want, not the need of money that usually drives people to do wrong, it is about good or bad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Theme Of Corruption In The Miller Consistently dishonest to his customers, The Miller is a great example of this kind of corruption. The main job of The Miller is to sell grain to families, thus providing them with food. The moral expectation of this job seems high, as families who must pay for grain are of a lower class. As a result, The Miller is most likely seen as a 'savior' to many people of the lower class. Chaucer, at first, supports this saying, "His mighty mouth was like a furnace door. / A wrangler and buffoon, he had a store / Of tavern stories, filthy in the main" (Chaucer 575 –577). In other words, The Miller seems to be an overall well–rounded, humorous guy. So much so, that no one has any reason to think that he might be cheating them out of their money. Yet, in the very next line, Chaucer describes him in a much different way: "His was a master–hand at stealing grain. / He felt it with his thumb and thus he knew / Its quality and took three times his due" ("The Miller" 578–580). Obviously, The Miller is receiving more money than he actually deserves because he places his thumb on the scale, making the grain weigh more. Although no one is aware, The Miller constantly takes advantage of his clients by making them pay more than their fair share. Although he does not appear corrupt to most, The Miller is dishonest and cheats many people who are involved in his trade. Chaucer also stretches this theme seen in The Miller into The Doctor's prologue. In general, Doctor's are viewed a good, moral, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Jungle Corruption While reading the The Jungle, it does not take long to determine that the city government was corrupt. During the early 1900s, the government leaders did not seem to care about the welfare of the city, and this is seen through the fact that they did not require enough from the city inspectors, and they neglected to educated the citizens on how election process worked, and the views of the candidates. They failed to accomplish these things because they did not care about the welfare of the people, they only did it for the money and power. The hardships in the Americanfactory worker's life were caused by corruption in political offices. The average factory worker was making usually less then a dollar a day, so because of this they were not able to afford food all the time. Before the family moved to America they would buy healthy and hearty foods, and with this food you would not have to eat much before you were full. However, in chapter 14 Sinclair writes "Some of it they would make into "smoked" sausage–but as the smoking took time, and was therefore expensive, they would call upon their chemistry department, and preserve it with borax and color it with gelatin to make it brown" (98). It has been shown that eating healthy food is more filling than fake food, so if the government would enforce strict laws concerning the cooking of meat, they would be saving money. Countries have different laws, making some actions viewed in our capitalistic society as inappropriate, to be appropriate in a socialism or communistic society. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) defines corruption as "intentionally to offer, promise or give any undue pecuniary or other advantage....to a foreign public official...in order that the official act or refrain from acting in relation to the performance of official duties in order to obtain or retain business or other improper advantage in the conduct of international business" (Raeschke –Kessler & Gottwald, n.d.). This measure criminalizes bribery in international transactions, however, influence peddling (a practice in which undue advantage of giving, promising or selling of an undue advantage to a person who will sell their influence to the government) is not covered by OECD definition. An effect the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) of 1977 found that "United States direct investment in more corrupt countries grew more slowly than in other countries" (Wei, 2000).
