The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines evil as "morally reprehensible" and "causes harm". Some will debate that evil is an inherited trait, while
others will argue that evil is acquired over time. Throughout J.R.R. Tolkien's first part of The Lord of the Rings, "The Fellowship of the Ring", there
are reoccurring themes of evil and corruption, most of which surround the One Ring, and can vary depending on who possesses the Ring. While both
natural evilness and developed evilness are demonstrated, "The Fellowship of the Ring" suggests that evil is not inherited, but acquired over time. Evil
is prominent throughout "The Fellowship of the Ring". Shortly after Boromir suggests that they use the Ring against Sauron, Elrond responds saying
that the Ring, "is altogether evil" (267). The Ring was crafted with the sole purpose of evil. This is seen in the inscription on the Ring which says,
"One ring to bring them all and in the darkness to bind them" (50). This script shows that the ring was created to draw other to "darkness", which is
often used to symbolize evil. While the Ring itself is evil, it is the only truly evil thing in Middle–Earth: "For noting was evil in the beginning. Even
Sauron was not so." (267). Throughout "The Fellowship of the Ring", there is a close correlation between the one ring and evil, as Elrond says, "The

Alayna gasped out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding and sunk back against the stone wall behind her. Her cheek throbbed, painfully,

In light of the news that an elite detachment sent by the King was searching for them, the Brotherhood barely strayed far from their hideout.
Strengthening their defenses, the outlaws began taking watch and readying their weapons for an attack to come at any moment. Still days passed,

What defines a hero? A hero is someone who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. The values of an
Anglo–Saxon are bravery, truth, honor, loyalty, duty, hospitality, and perseverance. Such traits define an epic hero, who with noble motivations
preservers through the toughest obstacles. Beowulf is this hero, he is a true hero with true noble motivations and good intention.
Beowulf is a fair fighter and helps the people of Herot by slaying Grendel without his weapons. "He needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I my
lord Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to...my hands alone shall fight for me."(168–173). This means he will
fight without his weapon, and only with his hands, to show his bravery and valor. As a noble hero he is, Beowulf decides to not use his weapons nor
his armor and only use his fists to battle Grendel. Beowulf is a hero, who against all odds fights in the face of death, and who fights for his people in
honor.
Beowulf is a fierce warrior who fights for good and helps his people, even if it means to sacrifice himself for the greater good."His grace has given me
allowed me to bring to my people while breath still moves to my lips...Take what I leave, Wiglaf, lead my people, help them; my time is
gone."(805–812). "Fought with fate against him, with glory denied him, he knew it, but he raised his sword struck at the dragon's scaly
hide."(668–670). As Beowulf dies, he asks Wiglaf to lead his people with the jewels he won from his battle with the dragon. He discovers fear, yet
battles it even if fate is against him. Beowulf fights until death beats him, he never gave up to any battle that came upon him. Though at times of his
journeys, Beowulf receives praise and glory from all the victories which came upon him.
It is true, at times of Beowulf's journey he becomes greedy and has a thirst for fame and glory."...Bring me ancient silver, precious jewels, shining
armor and gems, before I die. Death will be softer, leaving life and this people I've rules so long, if I look at this last of all prizes."(762–765). This
shows that at his time of death he finds himself pleased being around his prizes and precious jewels.
