The Impact Of Gandhi On American Society Through Martin...
Most Americans know little about Hinduism and few imagine that the values of Hinduism had any
influence on the development of American society. But what little they do know of Hinduism is most
likely derived from their knowledge of Mahatma Gandhi. Few Americans realize that Gandhi's
teachings and life's work had a tremendous impact on the development of American society during
the Civil Rights Movement.
Mohandas K. Gandhi, known to the world as The Mahatma, or the "Great Soul", brought a great gift
to the modern world. That gift was the light of Non–Violence, of Service to the Community and of
Social Justice. His life served as an example and this light became a torch which illuminated our

This particular school was attended by and large by students who were the children of former
‘untouchables'.
"The principal of the school introduced me and then as he came to the conclusion of his introduction,
he said, ‘Young people, I would like to present to you a fellow untouchable from the United States
of America,'. And for a moment, I was a bit shocked and even peeved that I would be referred to as
an untouchable.
"I started thinking about the fact that twenty million of my brothers and sisters were still smothering
in an air–tight cage of poverty in an affluent society. As I thought about this, I finally said to myself,
‘Yes, I am an untouchable, and every negro in the United States is an untouchable.'" In 1959, Dr.
King gave a sermon on the life of Gandhi in Birmingham Alabama. In that sermon, Dr. King says
"The world doesn't like people like Mahatma Gandhi. That's strange, isn't it? They don't like people
like Christ, nor do they like people like Lincoln. They killed Gandhi – this man who had done all of
that for India, who gave his life and who mobilized and galvanized 400 million people for
independence. One of his own fellow Hindus felt that he was a little too favorable to Muslims, felt
that he was giving too much to the Muslims.
"Here was the man of non–violence, falling at the hands of a man of violence. Here was a man of
love falling at the hands of a man with hate. This seems the way of history. And isn't it significant

Negative Events Of The 1980s
Although the 1980s was a wonderful decade, there were some negative events. The 1980s contained
many assassinations, such as John Lennon, Anwar Sadat, Marvin Gaye, Indira Gandhi, and Olof
Palme
John Lennon, an English musician, was a member of the legendary rock band, the Beatles. Mark
David Chapman assassinated him at only forty years old. He shot two bullets in the left side of
Lennon's back and another two bullets in his left shoulder with a Charter Arms .38–caliber pistol. He
was declared dead when he arrived at Roosevelt Hospital. The murder took place in the archway of
The Dakota in New York, New York on December 8,1980. On December 10, 1980 he was cremated

back which was identified as fatal. A subsequent shot wounded his Olof's wife, Lisbet Palme. The

Nationalism In The 20th Century
Evaluate the political role of Nationalism in the 20th Century– was it more important as a force for
unification or disintegration.
Nationalism can be described as a mix, multidimensional morally developed or created concept
involving a shared common identification with one's Nation. It is more on politically motivated
towards working and maintaining self–governance, or full sovereignty, working towards to a specific
land or a territory of historical significance to the group such as land and its belongings. In simple
Nationalism is a nation command and lead itself, free from foreign influence, it is the concept of
self–rule. Nationalism is further formed towards maintaining and developing a Sovereignty based on
shared features such as religion, language, race, culture, or either political goals or a belief in a
customary ancestry. So its pride towards nation's achievements, and the concept in world history has
shown positive and negative impact, moreover in a political dimension it leads either unification or
disintegration.

Impact Of Mahatma Gandhi On India's Freedom Movement
Mahatma Gandhi was a civil rights leader and the leader of India's independence movement that
inspired many generations even after he passed. In India, he is known as the father of the country.
His bold and courageous effort played a major role in India's freedom fight against Great Britain.
Gandhi became the inspiration for many young people in India and his clever method of nonviolent
civil disobedience became a major weapon in their freedom struggle. Mohandas Gandhi, also known
as Mahatma, led India's independence movement in the 1930s and 40s. He always spoke very soft
and taught the lessons of truth, Non– violence, and peace. He defeated the British colonists through
his non–violent protests and stirring speeches.
"Nonviolent resistance (NVR or nonviolent action) is the practice of achieving goals such as social
change through symbolic protests, civil disobedience, economic or political noncooperation,
satyagraha, or other methods while being nonviolent". The non–violent protest led by Gandhi was
used to communicate the current issues in the country and his disagreements with the British
government in managing these issues. People from all over the world including great leaders like
Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Barak Obama and much more are inspired by Gandhi's
belief in non–violence. "This is, in essence, the principle of nonviolent cooperation. It follows
therefore that it must have its root in love. Its object should not be to punish the opponent

Ghandi Essay
In 1869, Mohandas K. Gandhi was born in northwest India. When he was a young Man, he traveled
to England to receive his college education and law degree. Upon returning to India he set out to
change how the West was colonizing and industrializing his country, and set life to a new sort of
technique that would change India, and give a new perspective, and shed light on Indian culture, and
civilization. His techniques revolved around passive and calm responses instead of wild and violent
responses to the British. His term "satygraha" meant "truth and firmness" which was a method of
passive resistance to provoke a response. This is how Gandhi received respect and honor from his
followers, and the people of Indian civilizations. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

uncivilized, ignorant and impassive, that it is not possible to induce them to adopt any changes." He

Gujarati equivalent for civilization means "good conduct." In some of the primary sources Gandhi
compares the mind to a restless bird; "the more it gets the more it wants, and still remains
unsatisfied." Then he state's that "the more we indulge our passions the more unbridled they
become." Gandhi talks about how his country has remained the same throughout the years, and has
had no system of "life–corroding competition." He talks about how the Indian people have had the
same types of cottages in their former times, and how their education has remained the same
throughout the years. Gandhi also states that "It was not that we did not know how to invent
machinery, but our forefathers knew that, if we set our hearts after such things, we would become
slaves and lose our moral backbone." He believed that people should only do what they could with
there hands and feet. He wanted people to live independently and to follow their agricultural
livelihood, in a true home rule. This is what Gandhi considered to be a real civilization. In more

Crucial Similarities Of Martin Luther King Jrr And Indira...
Crucial similarities between Martin Luther King Jr and Indira Gandhi The best leaders have
momentous impact on a society due to their enormous effort of enchanting their countries by
bringing about important changes, and many people want to be like these influential public figures.
However, not all people are born with qualities to be great leaders. Although, some people are born
to be honorable and memorable leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr and Indira Gandhi. Usually,
many kids spend most of their time playing with cars, dolls or playing with their friends, but these
two didn't have usual childhoods as others had. Instead, many people would say, both Martin and
Indira had unique lives. They had various similarities such as participating in public activities, having
supportive parents, sacrificing themselves for their country and being assassinated. Ever since they
were kids, they participated in public activities to share their voices. For Martin Luther King Jr, being
a black and segregated didn't make any sense to him. He had to be in a different place from white
people even if he was in a restaurant. In a fact that, he wasn't allowed to have a seat on a bus because
the color of his skin. At the age of six, he had a friend, indeed, who was a white boy whose father had
no intention of letting him play with King. Also, losing his friend made him deeply concerned about
race segregation. In addition, he attended Booker T. Washington High School, where he became

The Political State of Countries Essay
The Political State of Countries
The political state of countries today is always changing and developing into new and hopefully
more efficient methods of running a country. In comparing and contrasting the political setup of two
countries a good understanding of the different systems is easily seen. The fall of Communism in
many parts of the world has triggered countries like Russia to create new political systems and
political parties. This also changes the functioning of the economy and the military. Likewise in
India, changes are almost seen daily in the ruling of the country. Comparing and contrasting these
two countries involves many areas including the political parties, legislative branch and the executive
branch. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The communists get support only when the outlook for the economy is bad and fear of
unemployment is affecting many workers. (Palmer, 346) The last of these parties is the fascist party
called the Liberal Democratic Party. This party platform stated in 1993 elections, "calling for a strong
army, continued government management of Russia's industries, liquidation of the 5000 gangs that
control the economy, arm sales to any country or group that wants the buy them, deportation of non–
Russians, avoiding mistakes of Hitler in dealing with the West, "nuking" the Japanese if they
continued to pressure Russia to give back some small islands occupied since the end of World War II,
a strong dose of anti–Semitism, and finding husbands for all unmarried women." (Palmer, 346) Like
Russia, India has several parties in its Democratic system including: The Congress Party, The
Bharatiya Janata Party, and The Third Front. India for a long time was considered a single party
Democracy and the Congress party ruled for about fifty years. (Palmer, 453) The Congress party
used these four items to gain support: charisma of Nehru and Gandhi, the independence movement,
the party's broad base in the local way of life and the ability to take in a great range of regional,
ideological and communal groups. (Palmer, 453) The Bharatiya Janata Party is a rising group that

Ecocritical Analysis Of Nehru
Abstract: The main objective of this study is to attempt an ecocritical analysis of Jawaharlal Nehru's
Glimpses of World History. Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964) is one of the greatest statesmen and
writers of the twentieth century. He has written a number of books of which Glimpses of World
History is an outstanding contribution to Indian Literature in English. His letters to his daughter
clearly reveal Nehru's interest on ecocritical tropes and his ecological sensibility. As a lover of
nature, he imparts this characteristic to his daughter, Indira Gandhi too. Ecocriticism has gained the
attention of many scholars over the last three decades throughout the world. It depicts the
relationship between human and nature – depiction of nature in literature. This theory has been
gaining popularity day by day because of the ecological disaster which the humans witness in
everyday life. This study analyses the letters of Nehru from an ecocritical point of view by using
various ecocritical tropes like wilderness, pastoral, animals, and pollution and apocalypse (ecocide)
for understanding the ecological sensibility of Nehru. This study's approach is to concentrate on the

Research Paper On Indira Gandhi
Indira Gandhi (1919–1984) was among the most powerful and skilled leaders in the Indian history.
She was the only daughter of Pd. Jawaharlal Nehru. She was cut out for politics. She had the classic
and prerequisite bent of mind when it came to political machinery and social reforms. In course of
her practice, she became public's favourite. K.A. Abbas rightly said in his book 'Indira Gandhi:
Return Of The Red Rose', "Indira Gandhi's accession is not hereditary. It's the reaffirmation of the
principles and policies formulated by Jawaharlal Nehru." She was first appointed the prime minister
in 1966, after which she garnered massive public support and acceptance through her extensive work
in the field of agriculture, abolishing poverty and also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This landed her in a spot of flux. On the evening of 25th June, 1975, Indira Gandhi had a concise
meeting with her close friends and confidants at her residence. Among them was an old advisor and
friend Siddharth Shankar Ray, home minister Om Mehta, Prashnachandra and RK Chanda. They
went through all the documents and legal accounts, and ultimately, as per Article 352, they came to a
conclusion that internal emergency should be declared. They also gave many reasons for the same;
some of them being that the government cited threats to national security, the 1973 oil crisis, the
economy of India was in shambles and there was rampant desertion and disorder across the nation.
Hence, owing to all these reasons, and above all, safeguarding her position in the political hierarchy,
Indira Gandhi decided to write a letter to the president of India, seeking agreement on her decision of
declaring internal emergency. Before this, she asked three questions to Siddharth Shankar Ray. Her
first question was, can a letter regarding internal democracy be written to the president without
consulting the cabinet. Second, she questioned him regarding the language and tone of the letter. And
lastly, she questioned him regarding the content of the

A private citizen without health died on January 30, 1948. Mohandas K. Gandhi fell after being shot
three times at the age of seventy–eight. Many people looked up to Gandhi. To pay respect, humanity
followed by the UN lowered their flags to half–mast. Almost a million people waited near Jumna, not
far from New Delhi, for the funeral to proceed. Not far from the river was a pyre built of stone, brick,
and earth. Gandhi's body will lie upon this pyre; having his head to the north, representing when a
Buddha has ended his life. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India on October

Gandhi immediately said he will be the first knowing death would come from a brother. He was to
die on January 30, 1948. Pathans and Mir Alam were arrested for their threats toward Gandhi. Yet,
Gandhi released them saying, "I have no desire to prosecute them".
In 1909, Gandhi sailed back to England for business. It turned out very good for Gandhi in England.
He won support of many of the people. When Gandhi returned to South Africa at the end of 1909 he
started to create a "a sort of co–operate commonwealth". This is where citizens would be trained to
live a normal life in harmony with one another. On November 6, 1913 thousands of people marched
with Gandhi twenty–one miles into Transvaal. Gandhi was arrested by the end of the first day. Yet, he
was released due to the fact he was responsible for the other marchers. He was again arrested the
second night and then later released after court. The fourth day he was arrested with Polak and
Kallenbach. The three of them were held there until December 18, 1913.
PART II: Not only was Gandhi a huge impact in the twentieth century, but so was Tagore. They
worked very well together. In February 1916, Gandhi spoke out to the students at the opening of the
Hindu University Central College in Benares. Satyagraha Ashram was first located in Krochrab, then
in Sabarmati. In 1914, Gandhi raised a group of Indian students to serve in the British Army. Four
years later, Gandhi recruited for the British Army in his area. Gandhi

Annotated Bibliography on Ghandi –– Social Justice and Religion Attenborough, Richard, director.
Gandhi. Columbia Pictures, 1982. Gandhi is a biopic produced by Richard Attenborough whose
lifelong dream was to make the story of the national independence leader's life into a movie. The
movie starts with Mohandas K. Gandhi, played by actor Ben Kingsley, rejecting all material
possessions in pursuit of India's independence. The storyline plays out to highlight important aspect
of Gandhi's life and ends with his assassination, where he utters the famous lines "Oh god." Critics
claim the movie is over exaggerated, however Attenborough does a fine job of bringing a visual of
Gandhi's life into Western eyes. In addition, what could be a bad thing ends up being a good thing for
the layman who watches this movie. Attenborough oversimplifies Gandhi's perspectives and ideas on
social justice and religion, which leads to a very simple explanation of Gandhi's philosophy.

Mohandas K. Gandhi And Malcolm X : The Concept Of Civil...
Civil disobedience is when the people or citizens oppose to follow certain rules or laws and they will
protest peacefully. People who practice civil disobedience are people who would fight for what they
believe is wrong and unfair through nonviolent actions, like the civil rights movement. Some people
who are known for practicing civil disobedience were Mohandas K. Gandhi and Martin Luther King
Jr., but another person who was also involved with the concept of civil disobedience was Malcolm X.
Malcolm X had different thoughts about civil disobedience. Although he had different ways to
approach problems, he also believed that people should oppose to unjust laws just like Gandhi and
King did. While Gandhi and King believed that those problems should be solved peacefully no
matter how difficult it would be, Malcolm X believed that it would not work if people fought
violence with nonviolence. All three of them, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X
had shown their thoughts about nonviolent resistance through their speeches or letters. Although
Malcolm X had an argument I agree with, I think Gandhi and King had stronger arguments. When
most people hear the word civil disobedience or the concept of civil disobedience, many people will
think about Mohandas K. Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr.. Mohandas J. Gandhi was someone who
fought for Indians rights. Gandhi led a Satyagraha campaign for Indians. This Satyagraha campaign
was the idea of nonviolence resistance. This shows that he supports the concept of civil disobedience.
Gandhi was a leader who led people to, "hold to the principles of nonviolent resistance even in the
face of violent tactics by those in power" (On Nonviolent Resistance speech). Here, Gandhi
encouraged his followers and supporters to be nonviolent when they encounter problems. For
example, when people threatens them violently, Gandhi wants them to protest quietly and not harm
them. He believed that when you fight them violently, there would not be a victory because you are
harming them, you are becoming like them. Gandhi says how fighting violence with violence, like a
war, that there would not really be any victory. There would be no real winner because with violence,

The state chief minister J Jayalalithaa in her statement informed "The cabinet has taken a decision to

to the Centre for appropriate action. If we don't get their response in three days, we will release all

The state government's decision came a day after the Supreme Court commuted death sentences on
three men involved in the assassination to life imprisonment citing the 11 year delay in deciding their

The War Between India And Pakistan
In the middle of 1971 the war between India and Pakistan became a must for India, there seemed no
miracle to halt the inevitable nor Allah wanted Pakistan to keep continuing with its' nefarious
activities, and the entire world leaders and major powers become active to have their own slice of
flash. The intelligence agencies of USA, USSR, China, India, Pakistan and other countries became
highly active, sensitive to each and every movement in the Indian–sub–continent. Israel's Mossad
came out highly successful in trapping a few high govt, official of Pakistan's Defence Ministry, and
women who were regular visitors to President's House of Pakistan in Rawalpindi. The valuable
information procured by Mossad were passed on to India and Gen.Yahya Khan never came to know
the moles in his house and office. In the month of Oct. 1971, Mrs. India Gandhi toured vigorously to
Europe to make her point clear and non aggression policy of India. For the world to know India was
least interested in occupying territories of neighbourhood countries, as projected by Pakistani rulers
and media. She was able to win UK and France to block any US move in United Nations. The role of
USA in India – Pakistan war is not only interesting to note due to full of pitfalls, biased views,

Mohandas Gandhi : A Of Gandhi 's Leadership Essay
Mohandas to Mahatma: A Glimpse of Gandhi's Leadership Justin Hussey Western Kentucky
University Mohandas to Mahatma: A Glimpse of Gandhi's Leadership Mohandas K. Gandhi was
born and raised in Porbandar, India on October 2, 1869 into a family of a privileged caste (Gandhi &
Desai, 1927). He was raised by a father who was the Chief Minister of Porbandar and a mother of
great devotion to the Hindu religion, and he was given thorough educational opportunity, which led
to his attainment of a law degree (HISTORY, 2015). While traveling to begin a new position at an
Indian law firm in Natal, South Africa, Gandhi experienced racial bias and color discrimination as he
was thrown from a first–class train carriage (despite having a valid ticket) for refusing to move
(Gandhi & Fischer, 2002). Witnessed injustices and racial discriminations such as this went on to fuel
Gandhi's activism in a fight against segregation and political oppression for the people of India. As
stated by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, we can analyze the effectiveness of Gandhi's leadership by
observing certain practices that he displayed. These practices include: inspire a shared vision,
challenge the process, model the way, enable others to act, and encourage the heart (Northouse,
2013). To "inspire a shared vision" means to create and communicate compelling ideas and outcomes
to guide people's behaviors toward those ideas and outcomes (Northouse, 2013). Gandhi's vision for

During the 1990's, Somalia had a famine crisis, which many Westerners labeled as a 'humanitarian
crisis.' As always, the hegemon, which was the United States, stepped up to the plate and helped in
providing food for the starving Somalis. Seeing starving children drew Westerners to sympathize
with these individuals and they blamed the inept Somali government for not doing enough to help its
citizens. The intervention was meant to deliver food to the Somalia, but later that turned to 'mission

by expanding their mandate and rolling over anyone in their way" (Hoagland, 1: 1993). What was a

Often times, Western states do not intervene because, they believe in sovereignty and that these
nations have a right to rule themselves without outside interference. When Western nations do not
interfere, the result like many, is a bigger conflict (i.e. genocide) among local population and more
people die, many are displaced and become refugees. Similarly, Deborah Thomas' book argues that
the violence in Jamaica is not passed from generation to generation, but due to the history of
colonization. Yet, many anthropologist, when doing their research, always see the violence in
Jamaica as something that has always been there, something that is innate. Ultimately, that has
influenced how the international community has viewed conflicts in Jamaica, that is, as a thing that

opinion of course, "They only can force me who obey a higher law than I, They force me to become
themselves. I do not hear of men being force me to live this way or that by makes of men". In this
quote I believe that the government wants to make you and control you. As long as you let them, they
will, but at the end it is us with the right to do what we pleased. Henry was very brave to speak for
himself. He who didn't let the government choose for him, he choose for himself. ... Show more

Gandhi was another inspirational man who never stood quiet. Gandhi was a man who inspired a lot

Gandhi believed everybody was their own god, he changed many peoples mind about religion and

Gandhi 's Life And Achievements
Gandhi is one of the most beloved and recognized public figures in modern history. His life,
teachings and brilliant strategies brought peace and happiness to billions of people worldwide. Born
Mohandas K. Gandhi in 1869 to modest parents in Porbandar India, the young pupil went on to study
law in England. Gandhi was married to his wife, Kasturbai, at age thirteen, as is the custom in India
for arranged marriages. After finishing law school in England and passing the bar, Gandhi, his wife
and two young children resettled in South Africa. While working as a layer in South Africa, Gandhi
became impassioned about the second–class treatment he and some fellow Indians received at the
hands of the British. Thus, Gandhi began his life of public service while in South Africa. The
traditions of India, Hinduism and Brahman wisdom played a large part in the formation of Gandhi's
beliefs. For instance, his spiritual beliefs were also his political beliefs and the Mahatma undertook
great efforts to make sure that the two were conjoined. In an interview with Louis Fischer, Gandhi
recounts "what I have been striving and pining to achieve these thirty years–is self–realization, to see
God face to face, to attain Moksha (Fischer, 22)." Thus, his spiritual goals are reflected in all his
work. Spiritual beliefs led the movement and its leader to practice non–violence, hunger strikes and
passive resistance. The Mahatma was also engaged in literary, philosophical and political endeavors.

Speech On Secularism
It cannot be denied that in a multicultural and a multifarious religious state, secularism cannot be
given any precise definition. It is a tool in the hands of the State to use it judiciously for the
promotion of inter–communal peace and harmony, and to ensure, depending on the peculiarities of
each case, that all the communities receive equal treatment.
India waited another twenty–seven years to enshrine secularism as one of the objectives of the
nation. On 1 September 1976, through the 42nd Amendment Act, passed during an internal
emergency, the words "secular" and "socialist were formally added to the preamble of the
Constitution. Then proposed constitutional changes can be considered under the following heads: (i)

R. Gokhale, made a lengthy speech on its far–reachingconsequences. Yet about secularism and its
introduction in the preamble of the Constitution, this was 'all he had to say:
"(T)he objectives which we had always in view, namely, socialism and secularism, which we have
tried to implement, will be more and more implemented and will be more accurately and correctly
reflected in a basic part of our Constitution, namely, the Preamble. Let anyone say that "socialism" or
"secularism" is incapable of definition (sic)."
Well, in order to accept that argument of the Law Minister , one may say that "democracy" in that
sense is also incapable of definition because, it is understood in different ways in different countries.
But, there is consensus on the way we practice democracy. In the same way, the meanings of the
words "socialism" and "secularism" are well understood and embedded in the Constitution. Thus, all
the argument seems futile but the main objective of the amendment to the Preamble was a very
important and fundamental feature of the Amendment

Richard Attenborough Research Paper
The religious beliefs if film icon and 'Gandhi' director Sir Richard Attenborough
Legendary British film actor Sir Richard Attenborough passed away on August 24 at the age of 90.
The performer, producer, and director starred in dozens of films, and is most well–known for his
roles in Jurassic Park, The Great Escape, Flight of the Phoenix, Miracle on 34th Street, and A Bridge
too Far. Attenborough also produced and directed many movies himself, his most acclaimed work
being the 1982 biopic Gandhi for which he personally won two Academy Awards.
The critically–acclaimed Gandhi was Attenborough's passion project. The film featured British actor
Ben Kingsley – now famous, but little–known at the time – in the titular role, and Attenborough both
produced and directed the biography. Although he won two Academy Awards, the film itself won
eight. Criticized by historians for contributing to "myth–making," the film was nonetheless a critical
and financial success, earning 20 times its $22 million budget. The project finally got off of the
ground after 20 years of Attenborough attempting to secure funding. By selling off his possessions
and spending "so much money I couldn't pay the gas bill," he was eventually able to produce the
biopic himself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Admitting that he would remain open to the idea of faith, the actor and film–maker was critical of
organized religion which he saw as a source of conflict. Attenborough told The Scotsman, "I can't
believe, as Gandhi did, that there's only one religion, one form of practising your credo. I am at a
loss. I will go on trying because I would be arrogantly stupid not to, but having to adhere to custom
and conviction in terms of practice I find destructive rather than constructive. It seems to me that
organised, formal religions have done a fair amount of damage in terms of our chances of living

Violent Protest In Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist who believed in the liberty and justice for all. During
his life, Dr. King lead peaceful civil rights protest, preached the word of God, and was imprisoned.
Dr. King advocates for nonviolent responses to injustice and believes that protestors must be willing
to go to jail for what they believe in. In addition, Dr. King preaches that a violent response to unjust
treatment is wrong and one should not practice it, a preaching that ultimately led to his death.
Overall, Dr. King favored the use of nonviolent tactics over violent ones.
Mohandas K. Gandhi was an African philosopher who was also an attorney. During his time, Gandhi
challenged the apartheid system. The apartheid system basically was a form of institutionalized
racism that put the whites (the Dutch and the British) above the brown (Indian workers) and the
black (the descendants of the African natives). In addition, it made brown and black people to be
considered "second class–citizens", even though some of held prestigious jobs. Gandhi was angered
by the apartheid system that he constantly protested it. In fact, it is what lead him to develop his non–
violent protest philosophy. This philosophy became known as satyagraha, which translates to "Love
Force" or "Soul Force". Gandhi believed that satyagraha was the way to oppose unfair treatment and
that violent protest would just leave people wounded or even worse, dead. The Satyagraha chapter in
the book states "While in

Martin Luther King Jr 's Letter From A Birmingham Jail
Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas K. Gandhi were civil rights activists who practiced a form of
movement to gain equal rights amongst their nation. King and Gandhi were most important for their
allegiance to nonviolence. King demonstrated his notion of nonviolence in his letter titled, "Letter
from a Birmingham Jail", and Gandhi in his writing, "from Non– Violent Resistance". The two are
closely related and share common and distinct themes; both held considerably comparable belief
toward nonviolence, laws, and religion.
As both understood the evil of oppression, King and Gandhi conveys that violence could not be used
as the measure to achieve equality in their movements. Nonviolence was utilized by both King and
Gandhi to bring focus to their oppressors evil actions and show the society that justice can be earned
without violence. King used nonviolence as a weapon to stop racism, segregation, and injustice
toward African American in the United States. King did a non–violent campaign in Birmingham, as
King stated, "four basic steps: (1) collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive; (2)
negotiation; (3) self–purification; and (4) direct action" (p.234). King believes, the tension created by
direct action is the answer to receiving results. Negotiation is an ultimately more humane approach
but allows less results. King concluded that direct action would create chaos that would open the
door for negotiation. Similarly, Gandhi revealed a method of direct

Women are a very important part of our society. Starting from our childhood when we are born
women as a mother is the only one because of which we become part of this beautiful world. Then
she takes care of you as a mother. As a grandmother she tells you stories of fairy & ghosts. In the
childhood when you are not able to sleep she as a mother tells you Lori so that you can easily sleep.
Thereafter in the same childhood when you commit some mistakes then she as a sister saves you
from your father's anger.
Then when you are young she comes to your life as a wife & becomes a very important part of your
life she is with you in your good and bad times. And hence she helps you in every single step of your
life then only you become a complete person.
So women's contribution is very immense in the social & economic development of various
communities in the world. Their political involvement may not be that much in the past but current
women's participation in politics all over the world is witnessing huge increase in leaps and bounds.
In India and other developing countries only a few women are actively involved in both high level

Gandhi Liberation And Decolonitarianism
Mohandas K. Gandhi`s writing in the Autobiography (1927) can be interpreted as a cascade of
significant events throughout his life that led to him becoming one of the most universally
recognized icon on earth. Gandhi is able to find a meaning in each event of his life that attaches him
to the notions of non–violence, liberation, and decolonization. In this specific writing by Gandhi, it
highlights little events such as his childhood where he treated it as an experiment stage, doing things
like smoking and eating meat which were looked down up. From these experiences he understood
concepts like ahisma and adharm. Deeper into the text, Gandhi talks about complication`s that arise
in his life. Things like being kicked out of his caste because he chose to go to England to study Law
and despite going through all the training and education he opposed by the Law society due to his
colour in terms of admission to the Supreme Court as a lawyer. Despite these events, Gandhi was
able to recognize that it is not necessarily important for him to simply tag along but he felt that he
was now obligated to speak up and question individuals, organizations, and the government. He was
able to realize that with his knowledge in law (political) and his values derived from religion
(metaphysical) he had the tools to overcome societal issues (civil).
What is Gandhi`s overall or major arguments?
Gandhi`s main argument in the Autobiography is his own quest for the truth which is embodied in

M. K. Gandhi's Civil Disobedience Movement
In response to the inadequacy of the Simon Report, the Labor Government, which had come to
power under Ramsay MacDonald in 1929, decided to hold a series of Round Table Conferences in
London.
The first Round Table Conference convened from 12 November 1930 to 19 January 1931. Prior to
the Conference, M. K. Gandhi had initiated the Civil Disobedience Movement on behalf of the
Indian National Congress. Consequently, since many of the Congress' leaders were in jail, Congress
did not participate in the first conference, but representatives from all other Indian parties and a
number of Princes did. The outcomes of the first Round Table Conference were minimal: India was
to develop into a federation, safeguards regarding defense and finance were agreed and other
departments were to be transferred. However, little was done to implement these recommendations
and civil disobedience continued in India. The British Government realized that the Indian National
Congress needed to be part of deciding the future of constitutional government in India.
Lord Irwin, the Viceroy, met with Gandhi to reach a compromise. On 5 March 1931 they agreed the

Two weeks before the Conference convened, the Labor government had been replaced by the
Conservatives. At the conference, Gandhi claimed to represent all people of India. This view,
however, was not shared by other delegates. In fact, the division between the many attending groups
was one of the reasons why the outcomes of the second Round Table Conference were again no
substantial results regarding India's constitutional future. Meanwhile, civil unrest had spread
throughout India again, and upon return to India Gandhi was arrested along with other Congress
leaders. A separate province of Sind was created and the interests of minorities were safeguarded by

Gandhi's Use Of Nonviolent Civil Disobedience
Until 1947, the British crown ruled over the entire country of India. Indians were treated like second–
class citizens below British citizens for years, even though it was their home country. Mohandas K.
Gandhi was an Indian–rights activist during this time who eventually became known as the "father of
Indian nationalism" for his achievements in gaining Indian autonomy while averting civil war.
Although he was an activist for Indian independence, he was also an advocate for peace. Throughout
the duration of the movement, he always encouraged the protestors to never use violence or fight
back against British officers, even when they attacked them. His tactics were considered uses of
nonviolent civil disobedience, or "satyagraha". Nonviolent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He started this movement after the English cloth industry put the once–thriving Indian cloth industry
out of business. It was also a statement of self–sufficiency, making the spinning wheel a symbol of
Indian independence. The spinning wheel is currently featured in the center of the national flag, as
well. Another example is Gandhi's Salt March. In 1930, he walked across the country to the ocean,
with his followers in tow, in order to make salt from the sea. This was a large blow to the British
government because Gandhi made the mach symbolic. British industry had a monopoly of the salt
industry and made it illegal for anyone to make salt without a special permission, so when Gandhi
made salt, he broke the law and defied the British dominance over economy and government.
Throughout all of Gandhi's protest movements, he never encouraged or resorted to violence in order
to meet an end. His philosophy of satyagraha, or nonviolent civil disobedience, sent a message. He
believed that the people who make up a country have the power, so they can bring change without

Frustration within the Sikh community in Punjab due to the betrayal and threatening behaviour of the
Indian government gave way to a small–scale armed insurgency calling for the implementation of
what the Sikhs had been peacefully agitating for since India's independence.[3] The leader of this

bothered the Sikhs was the opportunity given to them shortly after independence – a land separate
from Hindus and Muslims. Unfortunately, at the time of independence, Sikhs declined the
opportunity to acquire a sovereign territory and accepted to live amongst the people of India. The
Sikhs rejected the offer as they thought they would be given the opportunity to live in unity with

Regrettably, this is exactly what happened. The government, created shortly after independence, had

Indian History – Important events
History of India . An overview : The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500

During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan–speaking tribes migrated from the northwest

In 1979, Desai's Government crumbled. Charan Singh formed an interim government, which was
followed by Mrs. Gandhi's return to power in January 1980. On October 31, 1984, Mrs. Gandhi was
assassinated, and her son, Rajiv, was chosen by the Congress (I)––for "Indira"––Party to take her

V.P. Singh and then Chandra Shekhar.
In the 1989 elections, although Rajiv Gandhi and Congress won more seats in the 1989 elections than
any other single party, he was unable to form a government with a clear majority. The Janata Dal, a
union of opposition parties, was able to form a government with the help of the Hindu–nationalist

Mohandas Gandhi was One of India's Pacifist and Activist
Mohandas Gandhi Gandhi once said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
Mohandas Gandhi was an Indian pacifist and activist, who is a beacon and an icon for many people.
He has inspired many to pursue non–violence, which is why we can consider him one of the greatest
of his time. Everything he has done was either for the good of others, or to bring himself spiritually
closer to god. Gandhi was a reformer because he played a large role in India's freedom from Britain,
he is seen as the century's foremost representative of civil rights, and he created a method of moral
activism and non–violence. As stated by Gandhi, "Only if I die for India shall I know that I was fit to
live." Gandhi is the main reason why India freed themselves from Britain's control in the early 1900s.
The British wanted to pass a bill to prevent Indians from voting, so Gandhi led a drive that gathered
10,000 signatures to oppose the bill (Deats 25). Also, Gandhi marched 240 miles to the sea, where he
made salt illegally against the government's monopoly and high tax on salt to help the poor (History
Study Centre, "Mohandas K. Gandhi."). Once in control of the Indian National Congress, he led the
Non–Co–Operation Movement, in which Indians stopped supporting British Colonial Institutions
(Hardiman 2). And to finally ignite the spark for their freedom from Britain, Gandhi led the "Quit
India" campaign. Independence was declared five years later in 1947 (History Study Centre,

Mohandas Mahatma Gandhi
Mohandas Mahatma Gandhi
(1809–1849)
Biography
Mohandas K. Gandhi was born in 1869, in Porbandar, India. His mother was illiterate, but her
common sense and religious devotion had a lasting impact on Gandhi's character. As a youngster,
Mohandas was a good student, but he never displayed any signs of leadership. On the death of his
father, Mohandas travelled to England to gain a degree in law. He became involved with the
Vegetarian Society and was once asked to translate the Hindu Bhagavad Gita. This classic of Hindu
literature awakened in Gandhi a sense of pride in the Indian scriptures.
Around this time, he also studied the Bible and was struck by the teachings of Jesus Christ –
especially the emphasis on humility and forgiveness. He remained committed to the Bible and
Bhagavad Gita throughout his life, though he was critical of aspects of both religions.
Gandhi in South Africa
On completing his degree in Law, Gandhi returned to India, where he was soon sent to South Africa
to practise law. In South Africa, Gandhi was struck by the level of racial discrimination and injustice
often experienced by Indians. It was in South Africa that Gandhi first experimented with campaigns
of civil disobedience and protest; he called his non–violent protests satyagraha. Despite being
imprisoned for short periods of time, he also supported the British under certain conditions. He was
decorated by the British for his efforts during the Boer war and Zulu rebellion.

Gandhi : Gandhi And The Darkness
"'Friends and comrades, the light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere.'" Indian
Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, made this statement on the evening of January 30, 1948. The light
he was referring to was Mohandas Gandhi and the darkness was caused by his assassination.
Mohandas K. Gandhi by Charles Shields and Gandhi by Catherine Clement were the books I
referenced. Gandhi was an Indian who dedicated his entire life to gaining independence for India
without the use of any violence. He also believed in equality for all, no matter their religion or race.
Throughout his entire life, Gandhi has demonstrated that he possessed many admirable qualities that
have been praised by the entire world, even long after his death. One of these admirable qualities is
his relentless perseverance while pursuing his goals in the face of opposition. For example, Gandhi
fasted for six days when the British decided the Untouchables, the lowest Indian social class, would
have less representation in government. Gandhi was a true believer in equality for all and his
determination to achieve that ideal nearly led to his death numerous times. To fast for an unspecified
length of time is like playing with fire. Yet, Gandhi was not to be stopped by anything, including the
possibility of death, and never gave up on achieving his dreams. Another illustration of Gandhi's
unyielding persistence is his hard work and countless contributions to his volunteer ambulance corps
that he

The Impact of Gandhi on American Society Through Martin Luther King Jr

  • 1. The Impact Of Gandhi On American Society Through Martin... Most Americans know little about Hinduism and few imagine that the values of Hinduism had any influence on the development of American society. But what little they do know of Hinduism is most likely derived from their knowledge of Mahatma Gandhi. Few Americans realize that Gandhi's teachings and life's work had a tremendous impact on the development of American society during the Civil Rights Movement. Mohandas K. Gandhi, known to the world as The Mahatma, or the "Great Soul", brought a great gift to the modern world. That gift was the light of Non–Violence, of Service to the Community and of Social Justice. His life served as an example and this light became a torch which illuminated our world and which saved us from our own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This particular school was attended by and large by students who were the children of former ‘untouchables'. "The principal of the school introduced me and then as he came to the conclusion of his introduction, he said, ‘Young people, I would like to present to you a fellow untouchable from the United States of America,'. And for a moment, I was a bit shocked and even peeved that I would be referred to as an untouchable. "I started thinking about the fact that twenty million of my brothers and sisters were still smothering in an air–tight cage of poverty in an affluent society. As I thought about this, I finally said to myself, ‘Yes, I am an untouchable, and every negro in the United States is an untouchable.'" In 1959, Dr. King gave a sermon on the life of Gandhi in Birmingham Alabama. In that sermon, Dr. King says "The world doesn't like people like Mahatma Gandhi. That's strange, isn't it? They don't like people like Christ, nor do they like people like Lincoln. They killed Gandhi – this man who had done all of that for India, who gave his life and who mobilized and galvanized 400 million people for independence. One of his own fellow Hindus felt that he was a little too favorable to Muslims, felt that he was giving too much to the Muslims. "Here was the man of non–violence, falling at the hands of a man of violence. Here was a man of love falling at the hands of a man with hate. This seems the way of history. Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964) is one of the greatest statesmen and writers of the twentieth century. He has written a number of books of which Glimpses of World History is an outstanding contribution to Indian Literature in English. His letters to his daughter clearly reveal Nehru's interest on ecocritical tropes and his ecological sensibility. As a lover of nature, he imparts this characteristic to his daughter, Indira Gandhi too. Ecocriticism has gained the attention of many scholars over the last three decades throughout the world. It depicts the relationship between human and nature – depiction of nature in literature. This theory has been gaining popularity day by day because of the ecological disaster which the humans witness in everyday life. This study analyses the letters of Nehru from an ecocritical point of view by using various ecocritical tropes like wilderness, pastoral, animals, and pollution and apocalypse (ecocide) for understanding the ecological sensibility of Nehru. On the evening of 25th June, 1975, Indira Gandhi had a concise meeting with her close friends and confidants at her residence. Among them was an old advisor and friend Siddharth Shankar Ray, home minister Om Mehta, Prashnachandra and RK Chanda. They went through all the documents and legal accounts, and ultimately, as per Article 352, they came to a conclusion that internal emergency should be declared. They also gave many reasons for the same; some of them being that the government cited threats to national security, the 1973 oil crisis, the economy of India was in shambles and there was rampant desertion and disorder across the nation. Hence, owing to all these reasons, and above all, safeguarding her position in the political hierarchy, Indira Gandhi decided to write a letter to the president of India, seeking agreement on her decision of declaring internal emergency. Before this, she asked three questions to Siddharth Shankar Ray. Her first question was, can a letter regarding internal democracy be written to the president without consulting the cabinet. Columbia Pictures, 1982. Gandhi is a biopic produced by Richard Attenborough whose lifelong dream was to make the story of the national independence leader's life into a movie. The movie starts with Mohandas K. Gandhi, played by actor Ben Kingsley, rejecting all material possessions in pursuit of India's independence. The storyline plays out to highlight important aspect of Gandhi's life and ends with his assassination, where he utters the famous lines "Oh god." Critics claim the movie is over exaggerated, however Attenborough does a fine job of bringing a visual of Gandhi's life into Western eyes. In addition, what could be a bad thing ends up being a good thing for the layman who watches this movie. Attenborough oversimplifies Gandhi's perspectives and ideas on social justice and religion, which leads to a very simple explanation of Gandhi's philosophy. Friedman, Joseph S. • 13. Mohandas K. Gandhi And Malcolm X : The Concept Of Civil... Civil disobedience is when the people or citizens oppose to follow certain rules or laws and they will protest peacefully. People who practice civil disobedience are people who would fight for what they believe is wrong and unfair through nonviolent actions, like the civil rights movement. Some people who are known for practicing civil disobedience were Mohandas K. Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., but another person who was also involved with the concept of civil disobedience was Malcolm X. Malcolm X had different thoughts about civil disobedience. Although he had different ways to approach problems, he also believed that people should oppose to unjust laws just like Gandhi and King did. While Gandhi and King believed that those problems should be solved peacefully no matter how difficult it would be, Malcolm X believed that it would not work if people fought violence with nonviolence. All three of them, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X had shown their thoughts about nonviolent resistance through their speeches or letters. Although Malcolm X had an argument I agree with, I think Gandhi and King had stronger arguments. When most people hear the word civil disobedience or the concept of civil disobedience, many people will think about Mohandas K. Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr.. Mohandas J. Gandhi was someone who fought for Indians rights. Gandhi led a Satyagraha campaign for Indians. This Satyagraha campaign was the idea of nonviolence resistance. This shows that he supports the concept of civil disobedience. Gandhi was a leader who led people to, "hold to the principles of nonviolent resistance even in the face of violent tactics by those in power" (On Nonviolent Resistance speech). Here, Gandhi encouraged his followers and supporters to be nonviolent when they encounter problems. For example, when people threatens them violently, Gandhi wants them to protest quietly and not harm them. He believed that when you fight them violently, there would not be a victory because you are harming them, you are becoming like them. Mohandas Gandhi : A Of Gandhi 's Leadership Essay Mohandas to Mahatma: A Glimpse of Gandhi's Leadership Justin Hussey Western Kentucky University Mohandas to Mahatma: A Glimpse of Gandhi's Leadership Mohandas K. Gandhi was born and raised in Porbandar, India on October 2, 1869 into a family of a privileged caste (Gandhi & Desai, 1927). He was raised by a father who was the Chief Minister of Porbandar and a mother of great devotion to the Hindu religion, and he was given thorough educational opportunity, which led to his attainment of a law degree (HISTORY, 2015). While traveling to begin a new position at an Indian law firm in Natal, South Africa, Gandhi experienced racial bias and color discrimination as he was thrown from a first–class train carriage (despite having a valid ticket) for refusing to move (Gandhi & Fischer, 2002). Witnessed injustices and racial discriminations such as this went on to fuel Gandhi's activism in a fight against segregation and political oppression for the people of India. As stated by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, we can analyze the effectiveness of Gandhi's leadership by observing certain practices that he displayed. These practices include: inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, model the way, enable others to act, and encourage the heart (Northouse, 2013). To "inspire a shared vision" means to create and communicate compelling ideas and outcomes to guide people's behaviors toward those ideas and outcomes (Northouse, 2013). Seeing starving children drew Westerners to sympathize with these individuals and they blamed the inept Somali government for not doing enough to help its citizens. The intervention was meant to deliver food to the Somalia, but later that turned to 'mission creep', "the temptation commanders feel to chase success and perhaps glory around the next corner by expanding their mandate and rolling over anyone in their way" (Hoagland, 1: 1993). His life, teachings and brilliant strategies brought peace and happiness to billions of people worldwide. Born Mohandas K. Gandhi in 1869 to modest parents in Porbandar India, the young pupil went on to study law in England. Gandhi was married to his wife, Kasturbai, at age thirteen, as is the custom in India for arranged marriages. After finishing law school in England and passing the bar, Gandhi, his wife and two young children resettled in South Africa. While working as a layer in South Africa, Gandhi became impassioned about the second–class treatment he and some fellow Indians received at the hands of the British. Thus, Gandhi began his life of public service while in South Africa. The traditions of India, Hinduism and Brahman wisdom played a large part in the formation of Gandhi's beliefs. For instance, his spiritual beliefs were also his political beliefs and the Mahatma undertook great efforts to make sure that the two were conjoined. In an interview with Louis Fischer, Gandhi recounts "what I have been striving and pining to achieve these thirty years–is self–realization, to see God face to face, to attain Moksha (Fischer, 22)." Thus, his spiritual goals are reflected in all his work. Spiritual beliefs led the movement and its leader to practice non–violence, hunger strikes and passive resistance. King demonstrated his notion of nonviolence in his letter titled, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", and Gandhi in his writing, "from Non– Violent Resistance". The two are closely related and share common and distinct themes; both held considerably comparable belief toward nonviolence, laws, and religion. As both understood the evil of oppression, King and Gandhi conveys that violence could not be used as the measure to achieve equality in their movements. King used nonviolence as a weapon to stop racism, segregation, and injustice toward African American in the United States. King did a non–violent campaign in Birmingham, as King stated, "four basic steps: (1) collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive; (2) negotiation; (3) self–purification; and (4) direct action" (p.234). Gandhi`s writing in the Autobiography (1927) can be interpreted as a cascade of significant events throughout his life that led to him becoming one of the most universally recognized icon on earth. Gandhi is able to find a meaning in each event of his life that attaches him to the notions of non–violence, liberation, and decolonization. In this specific writing by Gandhi, it highlights little events such as his childhood where he treated it as an experiment stage, doing things like smoking and eating meat which were looked down up. From these experiences he understood concepts like ahisma and adharm. Deeper into the text, Gandhi talks about complication`s that arise in his life. Things like being kicked out of his caste because he chose to go to England to study Law and despite going through all the training and education he opposed by the Law society due to his colour in terms of admission to the Supreme Court as a lawyer. Despite these events, Gandhi was able to recognize that it is not necessarily important for him to simply tag along but he felt that he was now obligated to speak up and question individuals, organizations, and the government. He was able to realize that with his knowledge in law (political) and his values derived from religion (metaphysical) he had the tools to overcome societal issues (civil). • 29. M. K. Gandhi's Civil Disobedience Movement In response to the inadequacy of the Simon Report, the Labor Government, which had come to power under Ramsay MacDonald in 1929, decided to hold a series of Round Table Conferences in London. The first Round Table Conference convened from 12 November 1930 to 19 January 1931. Prior to the Conference, M. K. Gandhi had initiated the Civil Disobedience Movement on behalf of the Indian National Congress. Consequently, since many of the Congress' leaders were in jail, Congress did not participate in the first conference, but representatives from all other Indian parties and a number of Princes did. The outcomes of the first Round Table Conference were minimal: India was to develop into a federation, safeguards regarding defense and finance were agreed and other departments were to be transferred. However, little was done to implement these recommendations and civil disobedience continued in India. The British Government realized that the Indian National Congress needed to be part of deciding the future of constitutional government in India. Lord Irwin, the Viceroy, met with Gandhi to reach a compromise. On 5 March 1931 they agreed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two weeks before the Conference convened, the Labor government had been replaced by the Conservatives. At the conference, Gandhi claimed to represent all people of India. This view, however, was not shared by other delegates. In fact, the division between the many attending groups was one of the reasons why the outcomes of the second Round Table Conference were again no substantial results regarding India's constitutional future. Meanwhile, civil unrest had spread throughout India again, and upon return to India Gandhi was arrested along with other Congress leaders. • 30. Gandhi's Use Of Nonviolent Civil Disobedience Until 1947, the British crown ruled over the entire country of India. Indians were treated like second– class citizens below British citizens for years, even though it was their home country. Mohandas K. Gandhi was an Indian–rights activist during this time who eventually became known as the "father of Indian nationalism" for his achievements in gaining Indian autonomy while averting civil war. Although he was an activist for Indian independence, he was also an advocate for peace. Throughout the duration of the movement, he always encouraged the protestors to never use violence or fight back against British officers, even when they attacked them. His tactics were considered uses of nonviolent civil disobedience, or "satyagraha". Nonviolent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He started this movement after the English cloth industry put the once–thriving Indian cloth industry out of business. It was also a statement of self–sufficiency, making the spinning wheel a symbol of Indian independence. The spinning wheel is currently featured in the center of the national flag, as well. Another example is Gandhi's Salt March. In 1930, he walked across the country to the ocean, with his followers in tow, in order to make salt from the sea. This was a large blow to the British government because Gandhi made the mach symbolic. British industry had a monopoly of the salt industry and made it illegal for anyone to make salt without a special permission, so when Gandhi made salt, he broke the law and defied the British dominance over economy and government. Throughout all of Gandhi's protest movements, he never encouraged or resorted to violence in order to meet an end. His philosophy of satyagraha, or nonviolent civil disobedience, sent a message. Frustration within the Sikh community in Punjab due to the betrayal and threatening behaviour of the Indian government gave way to a small–scale armed insurgency calling for the implementation of what the Sikhs had been peacefully agitating for since India's independence.[3] The leader of this armed movement was a preacher from a Sikh institution called Damdami Taksal, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.[4] In simpler terms, the aforementioned acknowledges the fact that Sikhs in Punjab were in dispute with the Indian government over a territory that belongs distinctly to Sikhs. What bothered the Sikhs was the opportunity given to them shortly after independence – a land separate from Hindus and Muslims. Unfortunately, at the time of independence, Sikhs declined the opportunity to acquire a sovereign territory and accepted to live amongst the people of India. The Sikhs rejected the offer as they thought they would be given the opportunity to live in unity with others without being suppressed or misrepresented. Regrettably, this is exactly what happened. The government, created shortly after independence, had representation of mass populations, of which mostly were Hindus. Sikhs, who only composed two percent of India, ... An overview : The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500 B.C., when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C., probably due to ecological changes. During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan–speaking tribes migrated from the northwest into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River valley, they adapted to antecedent cultures. The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating boundaries. His government was brought down in 1989 by allegations of corruption and was followed by V.P. Singh and then Chandra Shekhar. In the 1989 elections, although Rajiv Gandhi and Congress won more seats in the 1989 elections than any other single party, he was unable to form a government with a clear majority. The Janata Dal, a union of opposition parties, was able to form a government with the help of the Hindu–nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the right and the communists on the left. This loose coalition collapsed in November 1990, and the government was controlled for a short period by a breakaway Janata Dal group supported by Congress (I), with Chandra Shekhar as Prime Minister. That alliance also collapsed, resulting in national elections in June 1991. • 35. Mohandas Gandhi was One of India's Pacifist and Activist Mohandas Gandhi Gandhi once said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Mohandas Gandhi was an Indian pacifist and activist, who is a beacon and an icon for many people. He has inspired many to pursue non–violence, which is why we can consider him one of the greatest of his time. Everything he has done was either for the good of others, or to bring himself spiritually closer to god. Gandhi was a reformer because he played a large role in India's freedom from Britain, he is seen as the century's foremost representative of civil rights, and he created a method of moral activism and non–violence. As stated by Gandhi, "Only if I die for India shall I know that I was fit to live." Gandhi is the main reason why India freed themselves from Britain's control in the early 1900s. The British wanted to pass a bill to prevent Indians from voting, so Gandhi led a drive that gathered 10,000 signatures to oppose the bill (Deats 25). Also, Gandhi marched 240 miles to the sea, where he made salt illegally against the government's monopoly and high tax on salt to help the poor (History Study Centre, "Mohandas K. Gandhi."). Once in control of the Indian National Congress, he led the Non–Co–Operation Movement, in which Indians stopped supporting British Colonial Institutions (Hardiman 2). And to finally ignite the spark for their freedom from Britain, Gandhi led the "Quit India" campaign. Independence was declared five years later in 1947 (History Study Centre, "Mohandas ... His mother was illiterate, but her common sense and religious devotion had a lasting impact on Gandhi's character. As a youngster, Mohandas was a good student, but he never displayed any signs of leadership. On the death of his father, Mohandas travelled to England to gain a degree in law. He became involved with the Vegetarian Society and was once asked to translate the Hindu Bhagavad Gita. This classic of Hindu literature awakened in Gandhi a sense of pride in the Indian scriptures. Around this time, he also studied the Bible and was struck by the teachings of Jesus Christ – especially the emphasis on humility and forgiveness. He remained committed to the Bible and Bhagavad Gita throughout his life, though he was critical of aspects of both religions. Gandhi in South Africa On completing his degree in Law, Gandhi returned to India, where he was soon sent to South Africa to practise law. In South Africa, Gandhi was struck by the level of racial discrimination and injustice often experienced by Indians. It was in South Africa that Gandhi first experimented with campaigns of civil disobedience and protest; he called his non–violent protests satyagraha. • 40. Gandhi : Gandhi And The Darkness "'Friends and comrades, the light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere.'" Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, made this statement on the evening of January 30, 1948. The light he was referring to was Mohandas Gandhi and the darkness was caused by his assassination. Mohandas K. Gandhi by Charles Shields and Gandhi by Catherine Clement were the books I referenced. Gandhi was an Indian who dedicated his entire life to gaining independence for India without the use of any violence. He also believed in equality for all, no matter their religion or race. Throughout his entire life, Gandhi has demonstrated that he possessed many admirable qualities that have been praised by the entire world, even long after his death. One of these admirable qualities is his relentless perseverance while pursuing his goals in the face of opposition. For example, Gandhi fasted for six days when the British decided the Untouchables, the lowest Indian social class, would have less representation in government. Gandhi was a true believer in equality for all and his determination to achieve that ideal nearly led to his death numerous times. To fast for an unspecified length of time is like playing with fire. Yet, Gandhi was not to be stopped by anything, including the possibility of death, and never gave up on achieving his dreams. Another illustration of Gandhi's unyielding persistence is his hard work and countless contributions to his volunteer ambulance corps that he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
