SCI 200 Project Part One: First Draft Guidelines and Rubric
Overview: You have identified an issue in the natural sciences and developed an initial research question. In Theme 2, you will practice evaluating scientific
sources and then identify and describe sources related to your topic. As you investigate your topic through these sources, you will revisit your research question
and make adjustments.
Prompt: In this first draft, you will identify appropriate resources related to your issue and begin to analyze them and compile your reference list. You will
complete the first two critical elements (introduction and body) of Project Part One, and you will complete a draft of the conclusion in the next theme. You will
also begin building critical element IV, the reference list, in this draft.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Introduction: In this section, you will discuss your natural science issue and select resources that you can use to research the issue. This will lead you to
the development of a research question related to your issue. Specifically, you should:
a. Describe the issue in the natural sciences that you have selected to investigate. Why is this issue significant? (You identified this issue in Theme
1, but how would you revise this piece now that you have received instructor feedback and investigated your sources?)
b. Describe at least three science resources that you could use to investigate the issue you selected. Your sources must be relevant to your issue
and must be of an academic nature appropriate for the issue. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and
differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your issue? What was your thought
process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?
c. Based on your review of science resources, develop a specific question related to the issue you selected. In other words, what would you like to
know more about?
II. Body: In this section, you will use the natural science resources that you selected to investigate your question, focusing on an appropriate audience and
the scientific principles related to the issue. Make sure to cite your sources. Based on your research:
a. Identify an audience that would be interested in your issue and the question you developed. For example, who would benefit most from hearing
your message, or who could best help in addressing the issue?
b. Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand
scientific terminology and principles, or will you need to explain them? How will you communicate effectively with your audience?
c. Identify the natural science principle(s) that apply to your question and issue. For example, if your issue is global climate change, the principle
you might i.

Planning Document Question Check-In
January 19, 2020
My issue:
I have chosen to research electric cars and to let you know why
they are not good for the environment and what can be done to
8. make them better. People think that having an electric car is
safer to the environment then regular cars, but they are not
aware of the consequences that come with the electric car.
When people go green, they think about the electric car, but in
reality, the car is causing more harm than you think.
My question:
What are the specific impacts of electric car technology with
regards to the transport industry?

Question
Submission Feedback
This needs a little work, China. Although you submitted a
research question, I found that your question needs revision. We
must make sure that your research question is testable,
measurable, and clearly within the field of natural science. If
the research can't be quantified in a reliable, measurable, way
then larger issues will arise later on. I need you to read the
feedback that I have given you and correct your question. This
step is imperative to your future success of your research paper.
Having a clear and focused research question provides you with
a foundation to write your research paper. Please take the time
to review my feedback, carefully, to ensure that your next
submission has the necessary components for proficiency. Also,
I have also included a step by step guide in your feedback to
help you revise your question if you need it. If you would like
for me to review your revised research question, please feel free
to email it to me and I'll be happy to assist you. I want you to
be right on track as you move forward to the writing phase of
your research project. Thanks for your hard work.

Criterion Feedback
Thank you for your submission, China. Although you have
developed a research question on your topic, but I found that
your question is lacking in specificity. This is a common new
scientist mistake. You need to streamline the focus of your
question. I recommend adding:
1. a specific industry that will be studied
2. a specific time frame for your experiment
3. a specific geographic location
A well-crafted question is focused on one problem and one
measurable outcome. Here's a question format that may work for
your research question: What is the effect of _______________
on _________ over _____________? Here's what it looks like in
an example: What is the effect of organic toxicants on
Bottlenose dolphins' swim patterns in the Gulf of Mexico over
12 months? Does this question format make sense to you?
Another way to know if you have a testable and measurable
question is to attempt to create an experiment from the question.
If you are unable to create an experiment, your research
10. question is probably not testable. Please revise your question
and streamline it in this fashion to ensure proficiency. Revision
is a normal step in the scientific process, so please don't get
discouraged. I hope that my explanation was clear to you. If
not, please let me know and I can help you further. Keep on
working and you will be back on track soon. Thanks for your
effort.

Criterion Feedback
Thanks for your submission, China! There are no major errors
related to citation, grammar, spelling, syntax, and organization.
Writing this way will ensure that your readers are thoroughly
informed about your topic. As you continue to work on your
future documents, I would like for you to make some additions
to your overall paper to make it more accurate. You must
include in-text citations in your issue section and a reference
page (with hanging indents) at the end of your paper. When you
write in science, you must use references. Scientists are
skeptical about everything and require proof, or evidence. If
you don't have any resources, it's almost like you haven't said
anything, to a scientist. The preferred resource is a scientific
article. So, moving forward, whenever you write in science,
make sure to provide an accurate list of the scientific articles
11. that you used. This should be in the form of in-text citations (in
your issue section) and a reference page on a page by itself on
the end of your paper. You can use the citation guide that I
posted in the General Discussion board to ensure you have the
correct format. If you need more assistance, please contact the
SNHU Writing Center for assistance. This will help you achieve
proficiency on your future submissions. Keep on working hard!
