Dance Tribe Research Paper
Tribes Project I am a part of the dance tribe, the I need a watch tribe, the drama tribe, no ponytail tribe, I should probably learn to read and write in
Chinese tribe, the sugar tribe, the fashion tribe, and the crazy tribe. I am a part of the dance tribe because I've been doing dance since I was 5–6 in
China. It has been a part of my life for a very long time and I enjoy taking classes and performing dances. Currently, I am taking acro and technique
because I want to focus on the fundamentals and not a specific style. The next tribe I'm in is the I need a watch tribe because I always ask people
what time it is every 5 minutes and people get very annoyed. I am also in the drama tribe, for I love acting and drama. It is always fun for me

Personal Narrative: My Growth As A Jazz Dance
When I first received the word that the University of Southern Mississippi was going to be offering a jazz dance technique course, I could not have
been more ecstatic. Jazz dance has always been a major passion of mine, and I plan on continuing to broaden my understanding of this form of dance.
In this course I hope to grow as a jazz dancer so that I may be more equipped to teach others jazz dance technique. Jazz dance has been a part of my life
for a very long time. Jazz also happens to be my favorite style of dance. I took my very first jazz class when I was seven years old, and I have
continued to pursue it every year since. In these past twelve years, I have taken various forms of jazz. From beginner level to Broadway style to

My Strengths Of Dance
Ballet is an elegant dance style that has been taught for centuries, and I am excited to be learning more about this style of dance. Having started
taking dance classes in middle school, I developed a love for it and hoped to revisit that love through taking dance classes at Oklahoma State
University. Through this ballet class, I have learn more about technique and how to improve my technique when dancing. I have my strengths when
dancing, but I also have my weaknesses. Therefore, it's my hope that this class has and will continue to correct my weaknesses and reinforce my
strengths.
Beginning in late middle school, I took several dance classes until my high school graduation and fell in love with dance. There were few
opportunities after high school to pursue this love or expand my knowledge of dance, but I always tried to take advantage when I had the
opportunity. Three years passed with limited exposure and practice for dance, so I was thrilled when I was able to fit Ballet I into my Fall schedule
this year. Going into the class, I hoped to expand my knowledge of the dance style, improve my technique, and enjoy the opportunity to take ballet
class twice a week. Throughout high school, ballet was one of my preferred classes as I appreciate that there is an exact and precise way to perform
each step – even if I have trouble performing the step in that exact and precise way. As I prepared for the midterm evaluation, it was my goal to do my
best and to perform the

My Life Of Dance
Dancing has always been a part of my life. The long hours at competitions and rehearsals have toughened me out to become a very passionate dancer.
My love for dance started at the mere age of two, when I haven't even started my education yet. What I didn't think about at that moment was that my
passion for dance would slowly dwindle down. I also didn't know that over the course of nine years, my life would change. The Dance Factory is a
dance studio in Palos Verdes, California which was very close to my home in Wilmington. I started there at the age of two, dancing in tap, jazz, and
acro routines. At the time, I only wanted to go to dance for two reasons: frozen yogurt and tap. Every week, after my dance classes were over, my
grandpa would take me to get frozen yogurt. Besides that, I loved to tap dance. My tap teacher, Kelsey McCowan, pushed me and the other girls to be
our best selves and to give it our all. I truly admired her for how phenomenal she was, being around 24 years old at the time. A short while after, Ms.
Kelsey left The Dance Factory. Despite her departure from my life, I continued to dance until at The Dance Factory until 2011.
In 2011, my mom and I moved out of the home that we were living in with my grandparents to a new house in Pomona, California with my dad.
Leaving all the friends that I had made at school and at The Dance Factory, was a great challenge that I had to overcome by myself. As soon as we got
settled into our new home, my mom found a

Ethnographic Analysis Of The Dancers
The dancers run out onto the stage and form two straight lines consisting of three girls in the front and three girls in the back. As the piece progresses
this formation does not vary other than to switch lines. Once on stage, the music finishes the introduction and the happy, lively, carnival typemusic
begins. The dancers throw confetti onto the audience members and begin their variations of shimmying, hip thrusting, being overly dramatic and
movements that were highly sexualized. Each movement seems as though it was choreographed in order to make the dancer's body shake
specifically within the bosom and the buttock. The dancers' facings were both front and back displaying the entirety of the female body. Within the
clip at 28 seconds the camera focuses only on the female's buttock as it its shaking from side to side in time with the music. By 37 seconds colored
streamers fly down from the stage as the dancers walked dramatically in unison ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This scene departed just as quickly as it appeared. It is important to know that the music was present during this change of scene. Then the musicians
returned followed by the dancers. When the dancers were seen again they were in unison and were moving forward bent over walking downstage
shimmying their shoulders at the audience. When they could go no further the center dancer turned to the audience, hits her bottom and yells. All the
dancers back up and as a drum roll sounds they stop dancing with their arms stretched out to the audience, their cane in one hand and hat in the
other. Once again the film flashes back to the same house in Germany. This time in this flash men are heard chanting. A women opens her door to
see what is going on and finds a dog dead on her step. The flash goes away and returns back to the dancers as the drum roll goes on. The dancers then
put their hats back on just as the drum roll stops and a cymbal

Raul Gomez Research Paper
In my eyes, Raul Gomez, my dance teacher, defines success. We learned in class that success goes beyond an individual's financial situation. Success
entails one's accomplishment of personal goals and finding one's purpose in life. I believe that Raul embodies all aspects of success including pursuing
his passion, achieving recognition from many well–known dancers in the industry, enjoying what he does, and inspiring others. Simply pursuing his
passion no matter what proves his success. Many people find their passion, but they chose a different career that is more stable, financially secure, or
what they think that society believes he/she should pursue. Raul began dancing at a young age and found his passion as a child. Despite knowing that
most dancers do not make a ton of money, Raul pursued dance. "A few of my dancing and choreography experiences include McCallum Theatre
Choreography Festival, the Superbowl, CitrusBowl, and other commercial work," Raul described. I believe that his resume of professional
experiences shows his success in dance because he gained enough recognition to either dance or choreograph for many recognized events, and his
skills that he worked hard in paid off. Also, Raul completely enjoys what he does. Raul teaches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Dance Movement In African American Culture
1.In African cultures, they believe in creating a positive environment for the gods by singing and dancing, with the hope that the attention will cause
the gods, to grant their request. The African also believe that without the body and spirit there will be no god. In the Indian culture, they believe that
dance the body and spirit are one, and therefore it cannot be separated. The Indian's also believe that the body and spirit work together in unity or as
one. Lastly, both the Africans and Indians believe the body is the temple of the spirit.
2.The difference between dance movement and sports movement are that dance is used to communicate by using movement in conjunction with music.

Dance At Oip Dance Centre
On November 9th, I participated in a style of dance that I have never encountered before. At OIP Dance Centre in Toronto I took part in a heels class
taught by Angela Mahoney. Heel dancing has jazz funk and some burlesque elements to it, but heels are worn. Jazz funk dancing in a style that
incorporates hip–hop and jazz movements. All the movements that are shown are all developed around the fact that heels are worn. Sometimes the
movements are very simple so that heels can be worn. It is all about knowing where your body is at all times, because keeping balance in 4–inch heels
can be difficult in addition to dancing. Heel dancing helps gain confidence and builds physical strength. Furthermore, heel dancing is a new style of

This powerful style of jazz funk and the flirtatious movements from burlesque put together along with heels sum up what heel dancing is all about.
My experience with taking my first heels class was very different, but I enjoyed it very much. It was a new experience getting to dance in heels. It
was interesting to see how much of a difference it can be dancing in a new type of shoe. I had to be aware of my body so much more than what I
am use to. In addition, I am use to dancing in bare feet or in shoes where there is no heel. Having no heels, you are able to feel the ground and have
a sense of stability that way. When I wore heels I took for garneted how much I rely on my feet being able to be grounded into the floor to keep my
balance. It was also a challenge to think about my core, where my balance is, and what the rest of my body was doing. It was mentally challenging
just as much as it was physically. The class first began with a simple warm up to feel what it like to move in heels. Then we were taught how to
walk with the attitude and tease the style asks for. Simple walking in heels takes lots of technique that would not be expected as it is just walking.
But the way you need to hold yourself so you look presentable in heels is a challenge and very different. Next we did an improve exercise. This

Dance And Religion
Dance is globally presented in religion and culture. Dance has been important for entertainment, rituals, ceremonies and celebrations. In India they
have a god of the dance whose name is Shiva. Shiva is the third God in Hindu triumvirate. Anytime someone is doing a classical Indian dance Shiva is
present. When you are doing a classical Indian dance you learn with one teacher and afterwards you usually have a long term relationship with that
teacher. For hundreds of years Indian dance has been based on sacred text surrounding the inner sanctum within the Hindu temples. Kalanidni

I wouldn't be in this place if it weren't for gymnastics, I highly love gymnastics and It really makes me work hard for the things I want to happen! So
I had been working on my round off back handspring for quite a long time. About possibly three years. Though I had gone to several clinics and still
I didn't get my back handspring. Well a lot of people I knew had theirs already which made me feel more upset. I tried a lot of times and I would

"AWWW thank you guys!" I said. I was going to go! I promised myself, and my coach, that I would! I was really sweating, my face was seriously

with sharks surrounding me and going to eat me any second! "OK, this is silly" I told myself. 'I 'm going for it!" I started to run in very slow

they were touching the other side of my body, well very quickly lifting my body up from the ground and...... Finishing!! I could already see my
friends coming to me and putting their hands out so give me a REAL BIG HIGH FIVE! Well my coaches were coming right after them! I seriously

Dance Reflection
1) What you learned in dance:
Dance class this year was an incredible experience. I learned a lot of technique, amazing choreography (courtesy to Ms.P), and how to become a better
performer. However, I believe that the most important aspect I received from this class was how to choreograph a piece you envision only in your
mind at first. Throughout the Elements of Dance project and the ISP, I had the opportunity to work with different people to choreograph a dance piece
with a story behind it. As a choreographer, I learned that when working as a group it is very important to use every individual's strength in the piece
to make it stronger overall. These projects taught me how to tell a story through movement, facial expression, and spacing that would be successfully
passed on to the audience. I was also very happy with myself this semester because I felt that the lyrical unit especially, really helped me improve my
facial expressions, and my acting skills when it came to portraying a certain character and their life story through dance.
2) How you grew as a student and dancer. Be specific and also include if you reached all of the goals that you set at the beginning of the semester.
I set myself concrete goals at the beginning of the semester in this class, and I feel that even though I have not reached all of them yet, I am on the
right path. I grew as a dancer and student through my dancing technique, flexibility, and performance skills. In terms of flexibility, I

Critical Analysis Of Mamela Nyamza
Mamela Nyamza is a South African contemporary dancer, choreographer and teacher. She is one of the South African choreographers with a
powerful voice and her works are performed internationally. Mamela was born in 1976 in Gugulethu, Cape Town. A lot of her works rips into
vulnerable base of European culture and all the pretentious nuances it represents. In this essay I aim to discuss the choreographic aesthetics and the
treatment of the body in performance by making reference to specific works, mainly Hatched and also Shift. Hatched was written in and debuted in
2008 at On Broadway, the Out The Box Festival and BaxterDance Festival. Her work called Shift was debuted in 2010.

The boundary between audience and performer was ruptured when a spectator sits next to Nyamza and lights a cigarette for her, even when she
dances haphazardly bumping and falling on audience members. Just as Nyamza embodies the performer she falls back into the pedestrian
informality represented by the mom, as if she gives up on her dreams and accepts her reality and the responsibilities as a mom. Her movements are
dynamic as some works contain pieces which are less physical while other pieces are extremely physically demanding. Her movement dynamic

Abby Lee Dance Analysis
Being a psychology major, I tend to enjoy dances that appeal to emotion through stories. The dance that I decided to write this paper on is a small
group contemporary piece performed by the Abby Lee Dance Company. This dance has a sad theme to it, as it deals with the topic of suicide. They
use props including a table and three telephones to add creativity to the piece. This dance is interesting to me because of the affiliation it has to mental
illness, which is personally important to me. This dance, called "Suicide Hotline," features a dancer in a white costume who is going through a tough
time, she is the focus of the group dance. Three other dancers, dressed in black, are there to help her and in a sense "hold her up", literally, ... Show more

Since they have a table as their prop, we get to see a different aspect of levels than you normally would if the girls were only on the floor. During
this dance, there are moments where girls are laying on the floor and someone could be standing on the table. There are other times where a girl is
laying down on the table while the others stand behind her. Other times, they could all be on the floor, but one girl could be standing and the others
are lying or sitting on the floor. Throughout the entire dance, they are moving around on the floor, table, or standing up on either one. I find this to be
extremely appealing because it allows our eyes to focus on different moments or on certain dancers, which is mainly the dancer who is the focus of
the group. The table provides a different experience with levels that we would not see if they were just dancing on the

Should Dance be Considered a Sport? After repeatedly being asked over and over again, "So what sport do you play again?" I am now completely
prepared for all the confused looks I know that i'm going to get when I say, "I dance" As an individual who has been dancing for as long as they can
remember and has participated in local, national, and international dance competitions, I am a dancer and dance will always be my sport. So yes, I
guess you could say that i might be a little biased, but before answering the questions whether dance is a sport, it is important to define what makes a
sport a sport. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a sport is the "participation in activities involving physical skill and regulated by set rules or
customs in which an individual or a team competes against another or others." It is clear now that dance definitely fulfills all of these requirements.
Dance demands the same physical skills that are required in other sports. Flexibility, strength, and endurance are key characteristics that most dancers
need to posses. As with other "athletes," most dancers are not born with these abilities but must establish them through practice and repetitive training.
Similar to traditional sports practices, dance rehearsals are extensive and require diligence, dedication, and patience from the dancers as they will have
to repeat exercises and stretches to perfect their technique and stay on

form of dance that deal with making sounds and rhythms from a tap–dance shoes. Tap dance shoes are dance shoes that have a metal bottom. The metal
bottom is called "the tap". It's the movement in the shoes, in your feet, that lets you express the different beats and rhythms that you wish to make. Tap
has two different major forms, Rhythm Tap (jazz) & Broadway Tap. Rhythms Tap is rougher than Broadway tap, rougher meaning heavy

Descriptive Essay About Dance
Each year, in the month of Halloween and all things spooky, hundreds of supportive friends and family members coalesce together in the Alpena

anxiously wait for the big day in October where they can show their loved ones what they have been rehearsing for all year long and when this
suddenly creeps up everyone is beyond delighted that it is finally here. The amount of families who unite and come together to support the studio
is extremely heartwarming and I was ecstatic that the recital was finally up on me, but of course I was very unsteady about performing in front of
hundreds of people. Months before all the chaos of ordering costumes and preparing for the recital, the dancers all needed to take time and
practice. Everyone loved dancing in the quiet little studio each week. The disadvantage was that each time you would step in, the air in the room
would feel a lot like getting stabbed in the back with an ice cold knife. The air awoke the dancers and I up as if the air was an alarm that was blaring in
our eardrums. As the dancer slipped on their tap shoes, I, of course, was prepared for an exciting adventure filled lesson with some of my closest
friends by my side. The rush of adrenaline made my heart beat faster and faster. My stomach began doing somersaults as if I was still in acro class. My

Essay On Jazz Dance
Jazz dance historical background
Jazz dancing has a unique history and has been influenced by many other dance styles and techniques. Like jazz music, its roots can be found in African
and slave traditions. It then took inspiration from the tap, Minstrel shows, vaudeville, swing, and Broadway. Consequently, the styles associated with
jazz dancing change regularly.
When African slaves in the 1800s were traveling to America, they were allowed todance to sustain their fitness. Such dances proceeded when they
arrived at the plantations on which they worked in South America. Amid the early 1900s, this contributed to black Americans to lead the jazz
movement. The movement quickly spread to the audience and public, resulting in the development of dances like the Charleston, Jitterbug, Boogie
Woogie and Swing.
Jack Cole was one of the greatest individual influencers of jazz dance, as we know it today. He was a choreographer and theatre director born in 1911,
and is sometimes referred to as "the father of jazz dance." He developed some of the ballet–based movements and theatrical expression which have
become cornerstones in contemporary jazz dance.

Importance Of Dance
" Dance is the hidden language of the soul" ( Martha Graham). Dance is nonverbal and is often used by many people as a language. All people can
tell emotions by dancing even beginner and amateur classes. In the world, there are many kinds of dancing, for instance, jazz, ballet, and samba. Each
dance has completely distinct parts because all region`s cultures gave influences to each dance style in the past time such as classical Japanese dance

more exciting than one person. For instance, many parties have dancing with popular and trendy music because people are enjoyable. Second reason
is that if people dance with a friend, they can support each other because when someone has weak point at dance, someone can teach the part. Also,
friends give positive effects and make motivation higher. In my case, I often dance with friends at lesson studios. They can dance better than me, so I

I fell in love with dance the first time I've stepped into a studio for the first time, with some pink, shiny ballet shoes and when I was on the dance
floor. When I started to dance, I was about four or five years old. Ever since then, I've been doing dance for ten years in a row. My mom said, "now
you know why you spend so much of my money." And then I said, "well don't you like to see me dance?" And she said, "yes."
Firstly, the studio that I started it was called "Dance Education Center" or "DEC" for short. I went to this studio for six years. I loved all the
teachers and my dance family/friends, but I thought it was time to leave and move on to another place because when you get older like around
seven or eight, you had to take two ballet classes and one jazz class. Eventually, I was fine with taking the jazz class because jazz is fun and
exciting, but I was not very happy with taking two ballet classes in a row. I despised ballet and hated it because it's so slow. After, I knew that you
had to take two ballet classes. . . a few years later I wanted to move on to another studio so my mom and I spent one year looking online to try and

My Experience Of Improvisation In High School Dance
When I think about my experience with improvisation, I would say that I have had experience but not a lot of experience. I definitely haven't had
enough experience to where I get excited about doing improvisation. Most of my experience with improvisation comes from my high school dance
program. In some dance pieces that I performed in during high school, the choreographer would ask us to do improvisation for a section of the
dance. Likewise, my senior year dance teacher occasionally had us do structured improvisation. Also here at UNCC, when I took Rachel Tuckers'
contemporary jazz dance class last year, she would make us do improvisation dance circles to different types of music as well as improvisation
where we would adapt our movement to doing what our partner was doing but just in a different way. Those few improvisation moments are where
my experience begins and stops. When it comes to what I think improvisation is, I think it is basically any movement that a dancer does in a setting
that is not planned or pre choreographed. I feel like improvisation is kind of like wild dance thinking where the dancer just moves in a way that is
random and it comes from the first dance move that is at the top of their head. It is almost as if the dancer is just moving, but isn't really thinking about
what they are doing, they are just grooving. Although I think improvisation is just moving without thinking about what you are doing, I do believe that
there are boundaries that a

Dancing is a way for me to escape my worries. It is how I express emotions when I am unsure how to put my thoughts into words. I have always
been in love with the sport, and was thrilled to continue my dancing career on the Sartell Sabre Dance Team. I have admired many dancers that had
come before me, but the person that had always been an inspiration to me was Molly Carey. She was arguably the best dancer, thus far, in the history
of the Sartell Dance Team. She walked with her head high exuding confidence, but was never arrogant. She displayed the traits of the person I
wanted to be when I made the dance team. I was thrilled when I learned that Molly would be coming back to the team as a coach for my freshman year.
The beginning of the summer of my freshman year was an exciting time for the whole team. We began our season following another incredible
state finish. We were all ready to start a new season; however, the beginning of the summer season did not go as well as I had anticipated. As a
freshman on the team, I was expected to come to practice, work as hard as I could, and be silent while doing it. This is exactly what I did every
day of practice. I never understood why one of the captains would glare at me everyday at practice, or why none of the older girls would talk to me.
The other freshmen began to create relationships with the older teammates, but I was never given that opportunity. It began to be a very long summer
of miserable practices feeling excluded

Modern Dance, By Miriam Giguere
Contemporary dance was developed in the early 20th century as a movement against the rigid technique of ballet (Blackfish Arts Acadamy, 2006).
Using the natural lines of the body to create new movements, the contemporary dance style usually has more fluidity than that of conventional dance
styles (Freeman, 2013). In the book 'Beginning Modern Dance', Miriam Giguere says 'The function of dance is communication. . . . By communication
is not meant to tell a story or to project an idea, but to communicate experience by means of action . . . out of this came a different use of the body as
an instrument, as the violin is an instrument. Body is the basic instrument, intuitive, instinctive. As a result an entirely contemporary set of technics
was evolved.' (Giguere, 2014).
A forerunner in the changing face of modern dance was choreographer and performer Martha Graham. Graham took up dance at the age of 22, during
the time when women were fighting for the right to vote (Mapes, 2013). Being both shorter and older than most dancers, Graham had to use her body
in a different way to the others at the Denishawn School of dance. This went against all of the principles that female dancers had originally been taught
(Mapes, 2013). Over the duration of her career, Graham created one of the only sets of technique that is still practiced in today's contemporary style
(Mapes, 2013). Focusing on two main principles, contraction and release, Graham's technique was strikingly different to that of

Classical Ballet : Classical And Romantic Ballet
Contemporary ballet, although is a form of ballet but looks vastly different from classical and romantic ballet. Contemporary ballet consist of ballet and
contemporary dance, and the dance often includes having a partner. Contemporary ballet is often done in a turned in position while classical ballet is
done in a turned out position. A turned out position would be the first position in ballet where the dancer's feet are usually pointing outwards. Like
modern dances in the 20th century, contemporary ballet often hints a message to the audience. Alonzo King, a local San Franciscodance company
owner inspired many choreographer with his choreography by having a perfect blend of traditional and modern dances in his piece. His choreography
often contain a strong, controversial meaning. "The Moroccan Project", choreographer Alonzo King suggests the message of love and inequality, using
their trademark moves: spinning and elevating, in the contemporary modern dance style. As a revolutionary contemporary ballet choreographer, Kings'
dance pieces are often put together without restrictions and the moves are often modern. For example, the dance move at 0:17 to 0:27 consists moves
that are traditional and contemporary and conveys a message of struggle and breaking free. The female dancer first bends one of her knees while
straightening the other knee while making a big circle with her arms. Then, she straightens up her body while bringing her arms together to her chest

What I Learned New Imagery And Pedagogies Into My Dance...
I initially took Jazz III because it is required for my dance minor; I also hoped to gain a better understanding of the Jazz Technique. Throughout this
course I achieved the goals that I set at the beginning of the semester. My goals were to be very confident doing double pirouettes and comfortable
doing triple pirouettes. I also wanted to focus on being a more conscious turner and dancer. I pushed myself to break my habit of just going for
pirouette and hoped that it all worked out. Each class I learned new imagery and pedagogies that have been extremely beneficial to my dance career. A
few images and pedagogies that resonated were the idea of my pelvis being an elevator, taking my pelvis with me, especially when doing
battement's, and understanding the placement of a turned in passГ©. I have already taken and applied the goals, imagery, and pedagogies into my
dance career. At first, I was concerned with such varied levels but throughout the course I felt challenged in the Jazz III/I class. Jazz III is required
for dance minors to complete. I was excited to take this course because I wanted to expand my Jazz Technique. Throughout the course I have learned a
lot about the Jazz Technique and Vernacular. Before this course I had never done a grand pГ
le in parallel. I also learned how to do turns from second
position, which was new to me. This course made me feel more comfortable performing and having fun with Jazz Dance. In the past, I have felt timid

Descriptive Essay About Dance
Each year around the time of Halloween and all things spooky, hundreds of family members and supportive friends unite together in the Alpena
school's dusty auditorium to watch the spectacular dancers perform on stage. Each one of the dancers prepare and anxiously wait for this big day in
October where they can show their loved ones what they have been practicing. I, for one, loved the chilly October weather when all my friends
gathered together to perfect our dance, bobby pin our hair up, and take lots of silly pictures as memories. These were the moments I lived for and It
was always heartwarming to see the families uniting together to watch all of the dancers. I was ecstatic that the recital was up on me, but of course I
was very unsteady about performing in front of hundreds of people.
The blinding overhead lights flickered on as I walked in the cramped dance studio. The air in the room felt like a frigid sharp knife stabbing my body.
The air awoke the dancers and I up as if the air was an alarm that kept blaring in our eardrums. As everyone slipped on their tap shoes, I, of course, was
prepared for an exciting adventure filled lesson we always had in class with some of my closest friends by my side. As the lesson was coming to an
end, I realized that my dance recital was only a few days away. I felt a rush of adrenaline and my heart began to beat faster and faster. My stomach
began doing somersaults as if I was still in acro class. The recital was a time I could show off

My Experience At Connecticut College
"When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain point on the floor, it's to enjoy each step along the way." (Wayne Dwyer) There is no
description or analogy more accurate to describe my experience both watching and performing dance this past semester at Connecticut College. As a
freshman, it was difficult to move forward with dance in a new environment since I have had the same dance experience for 15 years. I found myself
equating movements and steps to styles more known to me; I was searching for comfort among the abundance of unfamiliarity. The challenge was to
embrace modern dancing for everything it entailed. Through watching both professional dancers and other students, as well as improving my personal
technique, I certainly feel that I have found a new appreciation for dance. Of all the dance performances this semester, my favorite was the Department
Concert. Even though all of the artists were extraordinary to watch, I was able to connect with the dancers most during the Department Concert.
Watching Connecticut College students perform gave me a different feeling than the other shows. I could relate to the performers better because I
have had conversations with them outside of dance and they have been there as mentors to me and the other freshmen. This feeling of inclusion was
only possible because of the atmosphere of the department; everyone, regardless of class year, is genuinely welcomed. I also believe that seeing
students perform the work was

Non-Verbal Communication: A Conceptual Analysis
I perceive dance as a non–verbal form of communication that allows individuals to discover themselves. I feel that the few times I dance with my
partner, we are able to synchronize our bodies together and have a connection above any verbal communication, it is more than just movement. I'm
able to immerse my whole body and express the joy I am feeling with my partner, and my feelings are resembled in our goofy dances. It's as if I am
able to be my own person and express my emotions to him through dance. It's due to this strong connection I feel with my partner, even if it's playing
around, I have a perception of dance being a strengthening connection between multiple individuals. Although I have this picturesque perception of

I am an observer rather than a dancer because of my past experiences of being imitated. I feel that if I dance again it would only make me seem
more of a "white girl" than I really am. Though I live with this constant fear of dance, I wish to be able to move my body in a way that people will
appraise me. It's this want to become a better dancer that I choose to observe and learn the moves privately so that one day I can amaze people and
no longer be called a "white girl" dancer that has no rhythm. I truly believe that if I watch others dance, then I can teach myself how to become a
better dancer for my own good. When I am confident to overcome my fear of judgment, that is when I will be able to dance in front of others instead
of just observing.
My relationship with dance can be described as complicated: I view it as beautiful, but when I attempt to perform a dance it is no longer beautiful. It
is a love–hate relationship in which I love the thought of exceling in dance, but I hate actually attempting to execute it in public. Even though I am not
worthy of dancing, I will always have an underlying respect for how it marvelously speaks without words. My emotional and mental awareness of its
magnificence will preserve, I only hope to grow physically in my embodiment with

Dance Review : A Review Of A Contemporary Dance Critique
"SLIP" Contemporary Dance Critique As I began watching the dance, I immediately felt a connection between the elements of movement and the
music of the piece as if the music was words on a page and the movements like illustrations. I also began noticing Laban characteristics of flow and
space throughout the duo's dance that coupled with the music to create imagery of a couple struggling to find strength in their relationship.
I felt that the dance was extensively dependent on the music, specifically the lyrics. As the repetition of the lyrics began, the dancers began the
repeat similar movements; for example, when the lyrics repeat "slip, slip, slipping down", the dancers physically slip away from each other as
when she slowly slides to the floor only to be caught by his grasp. The music coupled with the lyrical movements of the dance made me feel as if
the dance was telling a story of a couple. The music starts with a smooth swaying rhythmic feel steadily intensifying as the dance progresses. The
movements of the duo matched the music starting smooth and steady but becoming sharp and direct in certain aspects of the dance, such as when
he holds her in his arms almost as if she is lifeless and swaying to the music; however, in contrast later as the beat picks up, her movements are
direct with sharp angular lines of her legs as she separates from her partner. I feel like the music allowed them to tell a story of a couple passionately
in love but struggling to continue on. The intimate nature of the dance and consistent push and pull effect from the dancers alludes that they are in a
relationship. The entire dance the couple is intertwined with each other, slipping away separately but pulled back in by the partner, until ultimately he
slips through her grasp as he forcefully pulls away leaving her lying on the floor.
Throughout the majority of the song, the dancers expressed free flow such as when they began the dance with wave like motions of their arms
intertwined with the beat of the music. The fluidity of the movements continued as the male dancer lifted the female into the air and across his
shoulders, she then slid down him as if her body was free and he was in control. The movements are lightweight and

Jazz Dance: Personal Aesthetic Technique
In terms of Jazz dance, my personal aesthetic consists of technique and the accuracy that comes with it, the pure athleticism that goes along with being
a professional dancer, and the emotional relationships that go on between the dance, dancer, and audience. For example, the first piece of
choreography that had a resounding and memorable effect on me was "Wicked Game" choreographed and performed by Travis Wall shown in So You
Think You CanDance. The raw emotion was expressed in the movements, and was emphasized even more by the beautiful choreography behind it.
In another piece by Travis Wall, "Like Real People Do" show in So You Think You Can Dance the emotion was on the other end of the spectrum and
it was portrayed by lots of leaps, jumps,

Acceptance
The performers danced to uplifting and complementing words. The messages were a mixture of parents of the performers and other students
themselves. Having genuine compliments intensified the self–love message of the dance. In addition to the selection of music, the choreography also
expanded on acceptance. The dancers had mini solos, but after they finished their mini solo, they became background support for the solos after their
own. The dancers' dance moves displayed an open tone; their moves mimicked a happy and accepting encounter. Near the end of the performance, two
of the performers hugged as part of their choreography, which created a more loving and accepting atmosphere. The dance addresses a serious

My First Gymnastics Research Paper
I have always been a very active kid. As soon as I learned how to walk I was always running around the house, jumping on beds, and spinning in
circles. My parents thought it would be good to get my active in sports at a young age. I had seen dancers before, and I thought they were astonishing.
They looked so graceful and eloquent; I wanted to be like them. There was a dance studio right down the road, so my parents got me enrolled.
As soon as I started my first class, I instantly was in love. At the time I had just turned 3, but I was picking up pretty fast. I started off just doing Jazz
and Ballet. I was getting pretty good at those, and wanted try some other styles to too. If I remember right, I think I joined Hip–Hop and Acrobatics. I
loved all of the dance I did, but Acro was was my favorite by far. I was pretty flexible, and all of the tricks we did were so cool. We did a little
tumbling, and a little stretching. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Acro. Most of my time was consumed with dance, so I decided to quit so I would have more time to focus on gymnastics. After all, dance was getting

Prairie Chicken Dance Analysis
The Prairie Chicken Dance Style
In the Native community there are numerous styles such as Grass, Old Time Sioux, Northern Traditional, Prairie Chicken, Fancy, and Straight dance.
Each of the dance styles were brought about for their own reason and created by different Native tribes throughout North America. The origins of the
Prairie Chicken dance start with the Blackfoot and Cree tribes in the Northern Great Plains. When the tribes arrived in the Great Plains they were
amazed by an animal that was called the Prairie Chicken. The Native people were so mesmerized by this bird that they started a brand new dance
style to show off the power and confidence of this bird. This style is called the Prairie Chicken dance. In order for the Prairie Chicken dance to be
labeled as one the best Native American dancing styles it should be a high energy dancing that draws the audience in to watch, have stunning regalia
that catches the eyes of countless people, and have hand items that are stunning.
A great dance should include high energy dancing that will keep the audience entertained while still staying true to the guidelines of the style. "The
viewing was pretty amazing – watching the males do their dance numbers while trying to make themselves look aggressive" (Prairie Chicken Dance
beside a bus). Most people would laugh at the idea of someone "Chicken Dancing" however, this dance is not the children's dance that everyone knows.
Chicken Dancing is a masculine dance that is completely

The Three Types Of Cheerleaders
No matter what type of cheerleader you are, all cheerleaders have the same role. A cheerleader's main role is to motivate the crowd. Being a
cheerleader has many different meanings, such as sideline, competitive, and college. Whenever you hear the word cheerleader, you probably think of
a image of a little girl yelling and jumping on the sidelines at a football game; however, this is only one type of a cheerleader. The three types of
cheerleaders are high school cheerleaders, all–star cheerleaders, and college cheerleaders. They are all different in many ways which include different
venues, skill levels, and benefits.
High school cheerleading is where all the fun begins. The venues are usually held at a football field or a basketball court. At high school football and
basketball games the crowds are generally smaller than at a college game. Most cheerleading teams are required to attend a cheer camp in the summer.
Depending on which cheer camp you attend, venues can vary from the beach to a college or even your own high school. Some high school
cheerleading teams are allowed to compete competitively against other cheerleading teams. These cheerleading teams get to experience cheerleading
competitions. The cheerleading competitions consist of many cheer mats, lots of judges, and huge crowds. On the other hand, skill level in high school
cheerleading is not quite as elite as all–star or college cheerleading. Most high school cheerleading teams do not require a back handspring, but there
are some cheerleading teams that do require a standing back handspring or a standing tuck. When stunting in high school, certain stunts are "illegal,"
such as basket tosses with flips or flipping in a pyramid without someone holding onto the middle flyer. Also, in pyramids everyone must be connected.
There are many benefits you get from high school cheerleading that include learning teamwork, leadership skills, and discipline. Also some
cheerleading teams get the opportunity to compete at the National Cheerleading Championship. The National Cheerleading Championship is the most
prestigious cheerleading competition in the country. This competition is held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and it is also nationally

My Wedding Story : A Story Of A Special Someone
We all have that someone that we would do anything for, we even all have that someone, who we meet, and we know that they are the one. Deep
down inside we know they could be the one but we might be too scared to look into it or admit it. Here, I'm going to tell you about my "special
someone". It starts with a simple outdoor wedding, some talking here and there, and it ends with a wonderful dance. If you have every been to a
wedding then you know how beautiful they can be, and how someone ALWAYS ends up meeting their special someone one way or another. I'm
happy to say I was the lucky one. It all starts with a simple outdoor wedding, in a small town, only about 50 people were there and I knew almost
everyone, except for this one tall, blonde, handsome, and an unexplainable guy. I would tell you more but that's all I know at this point, he is tall
and handsome. The ceremony was lovely, food was delicious, and the dancing was so much fun. The night was young and it seemed as if it was
never going to end, it was almost like I was living inside a dream.
About 20 minutes into finally sitting down, I hear a voice and feel a hand come over my right shoulder. I looked up and there he was, tall, blonde,
and handsome staring right at me with a grin of perfection. He asked if I was alone, and of course I said yes. He started to ask me all sorts of
different things, except for one, my name! I was starting to get a little irritated but man looking into those eyes that resembled the

The Evolution And Impact Of Jazz Dance On The World
The Evolution and Impact of Jazz Dance On The World Jazz dance originated from the African American vernacular dance from the late 1800's when
slaves needed an emotional and physical outlet (Guarnino and Oliver). The slave trade had begun and the slaves were allowed dance on the boats, as
it was to keep the slaves fit for their journey to North America. The slave owners took interest in this type of dance (Guarnino and Oliver). They then
integrated their European jigs with the music and movement of the African culture (Guarnino and Oliver). Africans primarily focused on the rhythms
and the movement of the torso and the Europeans focused on the harmony and the folk dance (Guarnino and Oliver). Jazz dance is blended with tap
and musical theatre. It has exciting body movements, percussion techniques, tap steps, and ballet. New forms of jazz dance evolved as different types
of music were coming out such as the Charleston, swing, Caribbean reggae, and hip–hop (Guarnino and Oliver). In the 1840's, minstrel shows were
developed from the European traditions of masks and carnival (Guarnino and Oliver). The blackface phenomenon was known as the white and African
Americans performers dressed up wearing black masks (Guarnino and Oliver). They would impersonate the African American dance forms; minstrel
shows were the "...First emanation of a pervasive and purely American mass culture" as well as the heart of the nineteenth century (Guarnino and
Oliver). Vaudeville was first a

  • 1. Dance Tribe Research Paper Tribes Project I am a part of the dance tribe, the I need a watch tribe, the drama tribe, no ponytail tribe, I should probably learn to read and write in Chinese tribe, the sugar tribe, the fashion tribe, and the crazy tribe. I am a part of the dance tribe because I've been doing dance since I was 5–6 in China. It has been a part of my life for a very long time and I enjoy taking classes and performing dances. Currently, I am taking acro and technique because I want to focus on the fundamentals and not a specific style. The next tribe I'm in is the I need a watch tribe because I always ask people what time it is every 5 minutes and people get very annoyed. I am also in the drama tribe, for I love acting and drama. • 2. Personal Narrative: My Growth As A Jazz Dance When I first received the word that the University of Southern Mississippi was going to be offering a jazz dance technique course, I could not have been more ecstatic. Jazz dance has always been a major passion of mine, and I plan on continuing to broaden my understanding of this form of dance. In this course I hope to grow as a jazz dancer so that I may be more equipped to teach others jazz dance technique. Jazz dance has been a part of my life for a very long time. Jazz also happens to be my favorite style of dance. I took my very first jazz class when I was seven years old, and I have continued to pursue it every year since. In these past twelve years, I have taken various forms of jazz. From beginner level to Broadway style to contemporary, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. My Strengths Of Dance Ballet is an elegant dance style that has been taught for centuries, and I am excited to be learning more about this style of dance. Having started taking dance classes in middle school, I developed a love for it and hoped to revisit that love through taking dance classes at Oklahoma State University. Through this ballet class, I have learn more about technique and how to improve my technique when dancing. I have my strengths when dancing, but I also have my weaknesses. Therefore, it's my hope that this class has and will continue to correct my weaknesses and reinforce my strengths. Beginning in late middle school, I took several dance classes until my high school graduation and fell in love with dance. There were few opportunities after high school to pursue this love or expand my knowledge of dance, but I always tried to take advantage when I had the opportunity. Three years passed with limited exposure and practice for dance, so I was thrilled when I was able to fit Ballet I into my Fall schedule this year. Going into the class, I hoped to expand my knowledge of the dance style, improve my technique, and enjoy the opportunity to take ballet class twice a week. Throughout high school, ballet was one of my preferred classes as I appreciate that there is an exact and precise way to perform each step – even if I have trouble performing the step in that exact and precise way. As I prepared for the midterm evaluation, it was my goal to do my best and to perform the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. My Life Of Dance Dancing has always been a part of my life. The long hours at competitions and rehearsals have toughened me out to become a very passionate dancer. My love for dance started at the mere age of two, when I haven't even started my education yet. What I didn't think about at that moment was that my passion for dance would slowly dwindle down. I also didn't know that over the course of nine years, my life would change. The Dance Factory is a dance studio in Palos Verdes, California which was very close to my home in Wilmington. I started there at the age of two, dancing in tap, jazz, and acro routines. At the time, I only wanted to go to dance for two reasons: frozen yogurt and tap. Every week, after my dance classes were over, my grandpa would take me to get frozen yogurt. Besides that, I loved to tap dance. My tap teacher, Kelsey McCowan, pushed me and the other girls to be our best selves and to give it our all. As soon as we got settled into our new home, my mom found a ... • 5. Ethnographic Analysis Of The Dancers The dancers run out onto the stage and form two straight lines consisting of three girls in the front and three girls in the back. As the piece progresses this formation does not vary other than to switch lines. Once on stage, the music finishes the introduction and the happy, lively, carnival typemusic begins. The dancers throw confetti onto the audience members and begin their variations of shimmying, hip thrusting, being overly dramatic and movements that were highly sexualized. Each movement seems as though it was choreographed in order to make the dancer's body shake specifically within the bosom and the buttock. The dancers' facings were both front and back displaying the entirety of the female body. Within the clip at 28 seconds the camera focuses only on the female's buttock as it its shaking from side to side in time with the music. When they could go no further the center dancer turned to the audience, hits her bottom and yells. All the dancers back up and as a drum roll sounds they stop dancing with their arms stretched out to the audience, their cane in one hand and hat in the other. Once again the film flashes back to the same house in Germany. This time in this flash men are heard chanting. A women opens her door to see what is going on and finds a dog dead on her step. • 6. Raul Gomez Research Paper In my eyes, Raul Gomez, my dance teacher, defines success. We learned in class that success goes beyond an individual's financial situation. Success entails one's accomplishment of personal goals and finding one's purpose in life. I believe that Raul embodies all aspects of success including pursuing his passion, achieving recognition from many well–known dancers in the industry, enjoying what he does, and inspiring others. Simply pursuing his passion no matter what proves his success. Many people find their passion, but they chose a different career that is more stable, financially secure, or what they think that society believes he/she should pursue. Raul began dancing at a young age and found his passion as a child. Despite knowing that most dancers do not make a ton of money, Raul pursued dance. "A few of my dancing and choreography experiences include McCallum Theatre Choreography Festival, the Superbowl, CitrusBowl, and other commercial work," Raul described. I believe that his resume of professional experiences shows his success in dance because he gained enough recognition to either dance or choreograph for many recognized events, and his skills that he worked hard in paid off. Also, Raul completely enjoys what he does. Raul teaches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This powerful style of jazz funk and the flirtatious movements from burlesque put together along with heels sum up what heel dancing is all about. My experience with taking my first heels class was very different, but I enjoyed it very much. It was a new experience getting to dance in heels. It was interesting to see how much of a difference it can be dancing in a new type of shoe. I had to be aware of my body so much more than what I am use to. In addition, I am use to dancing in bare feet or in shoes where there is no heel. Having no heels, you are able to feel the ground and have a sense of stability that way. When I wore heels I took for garneted how much I rely on my feet being able to be grounded into the floor to keep my balance. It was also a challenge to think about my core, where my balance is, and what the rest of my body was doing. It was mentally challenging just as much as it was physically. The class first began with a simple warm up to feel what it like to move in heels. Then we were taught how to walk with the attitude and tease the style asks for. Simple walking in heels takes lots of technique that would not be expected as it is just walking. But the way you need to hold yourself so you look presentable in heels is a challenge and very different. Next we did an improve exercise. This allowed us to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Dance Reflection 1) What you learned in dance: Dance class this year was an incredible experience. I learned a lot of technique, amazing choreography (courtesy to Ms.P), and how to become a better performer. However, I believe that the most important aspect I received from this class was how to choreograph a piece you envision only in your mind at first. Throughout the Elements of Dance project and the ISP, I had the opportunity to work with different people to choreograph a dance piece with a story behind it. As a choreographer, I learned that when working as a group it is very important to use every individual's strength in the piece to make it stronger overall. These projects taught me how to tell a story through movement, facial expression, and spacing that would be successfully passed on to the audience. I was also very happy with myself this semester because I felt that the lyrical unit especially, really helped me improve my facial expressions, and my acting skills when it came to portraying a certain character and their life story through dance. 2) How you grew as a student and dancer. Be specific and also include if you reached all of the goals that you set at the beginning of the semester. I set myself concrete goals at the beginning of the semester in this class, and I feel that even though I have not reached all of them yet, I am on the right path. A lot of her works rips into vulnerable base of European culture and all the pretentious nuances it represents. • 15. Abby Lee Dance Analysis Being a psychology major, I tend to enjoy dances that appeal to emotion through stories. The dance that I decided to write this paper on is a small group contemporary piece performed by the Abby Lee Dance Company. This dance has a sad theme to it, as it deals with the topic of suicide. They use props including a table and three telephones to add creativity to the piece. This dance is interesting to me because of the affiliation it has to mental illness, which is personally important to me. Other times, they could all be on the floor, but one girl could be standing and the others are lying or sitting on the floor. • 16. Should Dance Be Considered A Sport Essay Jenna D'Antimo Ms. Faye ENG 4U Monday, September 25th, 2017 Should Dance be Considered a Sport? After repeatedly being asked over and over again, "So what sport do you play again?" I am now completely prepared for all the confused looks I know that i'm going to get when I say, "I dance" As an individual who has been dancing for as long as they can remember and has participated in local, national, and international dance competitions, I am a dancer and dance will always be my sport. So yes, I guess you could say that i might be a little biased, but before answering the questions whether dance is a sport, it is important to define what makes a sport a sport. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a sport is the "participation in activities involving physical skill and regulated by set rules or customs in which an individual or a team competes against another or others." It is clear now that dance definitely fulfills all of these requirements. Dance demands the same physical skills that are required in other sports. Flexibility, strength, and endurance are key characteristics that most dancers need to posses. As with other "athletes," most dancers are not born with these abilities but must establish them through practice and repetitive training. Similar to traditional sports practices, dance rehearsals are extensive and require diligence, dedication, and patience from the dancers as they will have to repeat exercises and stretches to perfect their technique and stay on ... • 18. Descriptive Essay About Dance Each year, in the month of Halloween and all things spooky, hundreds of supportive friends and family members coalesce together in the Alpena public high school's dusty and chaotic auditorium to view the spectacular dancers performing on stage. Each one of the dancers prepare and anxiously wait for the big day in October where they can show their loved ones what they have been rehearsing for all year long and when this suddenly creeps up everyone is beyond delighted that it is finally here. The amount of families who unite and come together to support the studio is extremely heartwarming and I was ecstatic that the recital was finally up on me, but of course I was very unsteady about performing in front of hundreds of people. Months before all the chaos of ordering costumes and preparing for the recital, the dancers all needed to take time and practice. Everyone loved dancing in the quiet little studio each week. The disadvantage was that each time you would step in, the air in the room would feel a lot like getting stabbed in the back with an ice cold knife. The air awoke the dancers and I up as if the air was an alarm that was blaring in our eardrums. As the dancer slipped on their tap shoes, I, of course, was prepared for an exciting adventure filled lesson with some of my closest friends by my side. The rush of adrenaline made my heart beat faster and faster. My stomach began doing somersaults as if I was still in acro class. My recital was only a week away and the ... • 19. Essay On Jazz Dance Jazz dance historical background Jazz dancing has a unique history and has been influenced by many other dance styles and techniques. Like jazz music, its roots can be found in African and slave traditions. It then took inspiration from the tap, Minstrel shows, vaudeville, swing, and Broadway. Consequently, the styles associated with jazz dancing change regularly. When African slaves in the 1800s were traveling to America, they were allowed todance to sustain their fitness. Such dances proceeded when they arrived at the plantations on which they worked in South America. Amid the early 1900s, this contributed to black Americans to lead the jazz movement. The movement quickly spread to the audience and public, resulting in the development of dances like the Charleston, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie and Swing. Jack Cole was one of the greatest individual influencers of jazz dance, as we know it today. He was a choreographer and theatre director born in 1911, and is sometimes referred to as "the father of jazz dance." He developed some of the ballet–based movements and theatrical expression which have become cornerstones in contemporary jazz dance. • 22. My Daily Life That Changed My Life Have you ever had a time in your life that changed you completely? Well, I have, and I'm going to give you some information on how my daily life had changed and how it completely changed my life. And that thing that had changed me the most in my life would have to be dance. I fell in love with dance the first time I've stepped into a studio for the first time, with some pink, shiny ballet shoes and when I was on the dance floor. When I started to dance, I was about four or five years old. Ever since then, I've been doing dance for ten years in a row. My mom said, "now you know why you spend so much of my money." And then I said, "well don't you like to see me dance?" And she said, "yes." Firstly, the studio that I started it was called "Dance Education Center" or "DEC" for short. I went to this studio for six years. I loved all the teachers and my dance family/friends, but I thought it was time to leave and move on to another place because when you get older like around seven or eight, you had to take two ballet classes and one jazz class. Eventually, I was fine with taking the jazz class because jazz is fun and exciting, but I was not very happy with taking two ballet classes in a row. I despised ballet and hated it because it's so slow. After, I knew that you had to take two ballet classes. . . a few years later I wanted to move on to another studio so my mom and I spent one year looking online to try and find another studio. • 23. My Experience Of Improvisation In High School Dance When I think about my experience with improvisation, I would say that I have had experience but not a lot of experience. I definitely haven't had enough experience to where I get excited about doing improvisation. Most of my experience with improvisation comes from my high school dance program. In some dance pieces that I performed in during high school, the choreographer would ask us to do improvisation for a section of the dance. Likewise, my senior year dance teacher occasionally had us do structured improvisation. Also here at UNCC, when I took Rachel Tuckers' contemporary jazz dance class last year, she would make us do improvisation dance circles to different types of music as well as improvisation where we would adapt our movement to doing what our partner was doing but just in a different way. Those few improvisation moments are where my experience begins and stops. When it comes to what I think improvisation is, I think it is basically any movement that a dancer does in a setting that is not planned or pre choreographed. I feel like improvisation is kind of like wild dance thinking where the dancer just moves in a way that is random and it comes from the first dance move that is at the top of their head. It is almost as if the dancer is just moving, but isn't really thinking about what they are doing, they are just grooving. Although I think improvisation is just moving without thinking about what you are doing, I do believe that there are boundaries that a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Dancing Is A Way For Me Dancing is a way for me to escape my worries. It is how I express emotions when I am unsure how to put my thoughts into words. I have always been in love with the sport, and was thrilled to continue my dancing career on the Sartell Sabre Dance Team. I have admired many dancers that had come before me, but the person that had always been an inspiration to me was Molly Carey. She was arguably the best dancer, thus far, in the history of the Sartell Dance Team. She walked with her head high exuding confidence, but was never arrogant. She displayed the traits of the person I wanted to be when I made the dance team. I was thrilled when I learned that Molly would be coming back to the team as a coach for my freshman year. The beginning of the summer of my freshman year was an exciting time for the whole team. We began our season following another incredible state finish. We were all ready to start a new season; however, the beginning of the summer season did not go as well as I had anticipated. As a freshman on the team, I was expected to come to practice, work as hard as I could, and be silent while doing it. This is exactly what I did every day of practice. I never understood why one of the captains would glare at me everyday at practice, or why none of the older girls would talk to me. The other freshmen began to create relationships with the older teammates, but I was never given that opportunity. It began to be a very long summer of miserable practices feeling excluded ... • 28. Modern Dance, By Miriam Giguere Contemporary dance was developed in the early 20th century as a movement against the rigid technique of ballet (Blackfish Arts Acadamy, 2006). Using the natural lines of the body to create new movements, the contemporary dance style usually has more fluidity than that of conventional dance styles (Freeman, 2013). In the book 'Beginning Modern Dance', Miriam Giguere says 'The function of dance is communication. . . . By communication is not meant to tell a story or to project an idea, but to communicate experience by means of action . . . out of this came a different use of the body as an instrument, as the violin is an instrument. Body is the basic instrument, intuitive, instinctive. As a result an entirely contemporary set of technics was evolved.' (Giguere, 2014). A forerunner in the changing face of modern dance was choreographer and performer Martha Graham. Graham took up dance at the age of 22, during the time when women were fighting for the right to vote (Mapes, 2013). Being both shorter and older than most dancers, Graham had to use her body in a different way to the others at the Denishawn School of dance. This went against all of the principles that female dancers had originally been taught (Mapes, 2013). Over the duration of her career, Graham created one of the only sets of technique that is still practiced in today's contemporary style (Mapes, 2013). Focusing on two main principles, contraction and release, Graham's technique was strikingly different to that of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Classical Ballet : Classical And Romantic Ballet Contemporary ballet, although is a form of ballet but looks vastly different from classical and romantic ballet. Contemporary ballet consist of ballet and contemporary dance, and the dance often includes having a partner. Contemporary ballet is often done in a turned in position while classical ballet is done in a turned out position. A turned out position would be the first position in ballet where the dancer's feet are usually pointing outwards. Like modern dances in the 20th century, contemporary ballet often hints a message to the audience. Alonzo King, a local San Franciscodance company owner inspired many choreographer with his choreography by having a perfect blend of traditional and modern dances in his piece. His choreography often contain a strong, controversial meaning. "The Moroccan Project", choreographer Alonzo King suggests the message of love and inequality, using their trademark moves: spinning and elevating, in the contemporary modern dance style. As a revolutionary contemporary ballet choreographer, Kings' dance pieces are often put together without restrictions and the moves are often modern. For example, the dance move at 0:17 to 0:27 consists moves that are traditional and contemporary and conveys a message of struggle and breaking free. I initially took Jazz III because it is required for my dance minor; I also hoped to gain a better understanding of the Jazz Technique. Throughout this course I achieved the goals that I set at the beginning of the semester. My goals were to be very confident doing double pirouettes and comfortable doing triple pirouettes. I also wanted to focus on being a more conscious turner and dancer. I pushed myself to break my habit of just going for pirouette and hoped that it all worked out. Each class I learned new imagery and pedagogies that have been extremely beneficial to my dance career. A few images and pedagogies that resonated were the idea of my pelvis being an elevator, taking my pelvis with me, especially when doing battement's, and understanding the placement of a turned in passГ©. I have already taken and applied the goals, imagery, and pedagogies into my dance career. At first, I was concerned with such varied levels but throughout the course I felt challenged in the Jazz III/I class. Jazz III is required for dance minors to complete. Descriptive Essay About Dance Each year around the time of Halloween and all things spooky, hundreds of family members and supportive friends unite together in the Alpena school's dusty auditorium to watch the spectacular dancers perform on stage. Each one of the dancers prepare and anxiously wait for this big day in October where they can show their loved ones what they have been practicing. I, for one, loved the chilly October weather when all my friends gathered together to perfect our dance, bobby pin our hair up, and take lots of silly pictures as memories. These were the moments I lived for and It was always heartwarming to see the families uniting together to watch all of the dancers. I was ecstatic that the recital was up on me, but of course I was very unsteady about performing in front of hundreds of people. The blinding overhead lights flickered on as I walked in the cramped dance studio. The air in the room felt like a frigid sharp knife stabbing my body. The air awoke the dancers and I up as if the air was an alarm that kept blaring in our eardrums. As everyone slipped on their tap shoes, I, of course, was prepared for an exciting adventure filled lesson we always had in class with some of my closest friends by my side. As the lesson was coming to an end, I realized that my dance recital was only a few days away. I felt a rush of adrenaline and my heart began to beat faster and faster. • 32. My Experience At Connecticut College "When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain point on the floor, it's to enjoy each step along the way." (Wayne Dwyer) There is no description or analogy more accurate to describe my experience both watching and performing dance this past semester at Connecticut College. As a freshman, it was difficult to move forward with dance in a new environment since I have had the same dance experience for 15 years. I found myself equating movements and steps to styles more known to me; I was searching for comfort among the abundance of unfamiliarity. The challenge was to embrace modern dancing for everything it entailed. Through watching both professional dancers and other students, as well as improving my personal technique, I certainly feel that I have found a new appreciation for dance. Of all the dance performances this semester, my favorite was the Department Concert. Even though all of the artists were extraordinary to watch, I was able to connect with the dancers most during the Department Concert. Watching Connecticut College students perform gave me a different feeling than the other shows. I could relate to the performers better because I have had conversations with them outside of dance and they have been there as mentors to me and the other freshmen. This feeling of inclusion was only possible because of the atmosphere of the department; everyone, regardless of class year, is genuinely welcomed. I also believe that seeing students perform the work was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Dance Review : A Review Of A Contemporary Dance Critique "SLIP" Contemporary Dance Critique As I began watching the dance, I immediately felt a connection between the elements of movement and the music of the piece as if the music was words on a page and the movements like illustrations. I also began noticing Laban characteristics of flow and space throughout the duo's dance that coupled with the music to create imagery of a couple struggling to find strength in their relationship. I felt that the dance was extensively dependent on the music, specifically the lyrics. As the repetition of the lyrics began, the dancers began the repeat similar movements; for example, when the lyrics repeat "slip, slip, slipping down", the dancers physically slip away from each other as when she slowly slides to the floor only to be caught by his grasp. The music coupled with the lyrical movements of the dance made me feel as if the dance was telling a story of a couple. The music starts with a smooth swaying rhythmic feel steadily intensifying as the dance progresses. The movements of the duo matched the music starting smooth and steady but becoming sharp and direct in certain aspects of the dance, such as when he holds her in his arms almost as if she is lifeless and swaying to the music; however, in contrast later as the beat picks up, her movements are direct with sharp angular lines of her legs as she separates from her partner. I feel like the music allowed them to tell a story of a couple passionately in love but struggling to continue on. The intimate nature of the dance and consistent push and pull effect from the dancers alludes that they are in a relationship. The entire dance the couple is intertwined with each other, slipping away separately but pulled back in by the partner, until ultimately he slips through her grasp as he forcefully pulls away leaving her lying on the floor. Throughout the majority of the song, the dancers expressed free flow such as when they began the dance with wave like motions of their arms intertwined with the beat of the music. The fluidity of the movements continued as the male dancer lifted the female into the air and across his shoulders, she then slid down him as if her body was free and he was in control. • 39. The Three Types Of Cheerleaders No matter what type of cheerleader you are, all cheerleaders have the same role. A cheerleader's main role is to motivate the crowd. Being a cheerleader has many different meanings, such as sideline, competitive, and college. Whenever you hear the word cheerleader, you probably think of a image of a little girl yelling and jumping on the sidelines at a football game; however, this is only one type of a cheerleader. The three types of cheerleaders are high school cheerleaders, all–star cheerleaders, and college cheerleaders. They are all different in many ways which include different venues, skill levels, and benefits. High school cheerleading is where all the fun begins. The venues are usually held at a football field or a basketball court. At high school football and basketball games the crowds are generally smaller than at a college game. Most cheerleading teams are required to attend a cheer camp in the summer. Depending on which cheer camp you attend, venues can vary from the beach to a college or even your own high school. Some high school cheerleading teams are allowed to compete competitively against other cheerleading teams. These cheerleading teams get to experience cheerleading competitions. The cheerleading competitions consist of many cheer mats, lots of judges, and huge crowds. On the other hand, skill level in high school cheerleading is not quite as elite as all–star or college cheerleading. Most high school cheerleading teams do not require a back handspring, but there are some cheerleading teams that do require a standing back handspring or a standing tuck. When stunting in high school, certain stunts are "illegal," such as basket tosses with flips or flipping in a pyramid without someone holding onto the middle flyer. Also, in pyramids everyone must be connected. There are many benefits you get from high school cheerleading that include learning teamwork, leadership skills, and discipline. • 41. The Evolution And Impact Of Jazz Dance On The World The Evolution and Impact of Jazz Dance On The World Jazz dance originated from the African American vernacular dance from the late 1800's when slaves needed an emotional and physical outlet (Guarnino and Oliver). The slave trade had begun and the slaves were allowed dance on the boats, as it was to keep the slaves fit for their journey to North America. The slave owners took interest in this type of dance (Guarnino and Oliver). They then integrated their European jigs with the music and movement of the African culture (Guarnino and Oliver). Africans primarily focused on the rhythms and the movement of the torso and the Europeans focused on the harmony and the folk dance (Guarnino and Oliver). Jazz dance is blended with tap and musical theatre. It has exciting body movements, percussion techniques, tap steps, and ballet. New forms of jazz dance evolved as different types of music were coming out such as the Charleston, swing, Caribbean reggae, and hip–hop (Guarnino and Oliver). In the 1840's, minstrel shows were developed from the European traditions of masks and carnival (Guarnino and Oliver). The blackface phenomenon was known as the white and African Americans performers dressed up wearing black masks (Guarnino and Oliver). They would impersonate the African American dance forms; minstrel shows were the "...First emanation of a pervasive and purely American mass culture" as well as the heart of the nineteenth century (Guarnino and Oliver).
