Standards???
• The New York State learning standards were created in
2010 to help students to better prepare for college and
career:

3. But I have always taught
to standards, right?
• Over the past decade, New York State schools have made real
gains in graduation rates even as the Board of Regents raised
the standards for high school graduation.
• In classrooms across the State, talented teachers and
administrators are providing students with excellent learning
opportunities and have helped many students overcome
daunting challenges to graduate.
• Unfortunately, however, not all of our students graduate
college and career ready. Only about 75 percent of kids who
enter high school graduate four years later. That’s just not good
enough. (King)

• Through the reading of literature and nonfiction texts
students will gain cultural knowledge, references, and
images; they will also be able to sustain the ability to
evaluate arguments while addressing the skills needed to
work through complex texts.

• Overall students exposure to the various forms of writing
will increase their ability to understand formal structure,
task, and purpose.
• Students will be introduced to a variety of styles of
writing along with strategies to elevate sophistication.
• The revision process will also allow for the ability to look
at one’s work and a peer’s with a critical eye.

Standard for Speaking
and Listening
• Students will be given opportunities to participate in rich
conversations as a whole class as well as a small group.
• Through discussion students will synthesize and analyze a
multitude of ideas to support and defend their arguments using
appropriate evidence.
• They will be able to attentively listen to others as they speak
and transform their own ideas based on the merits of the
conversation .

Standard for Language
• Ultimately students will be able to have a strong
understanding of all the standard conventions of the
English language and choose words based on myriad of
qualifications.
• This sophistication will allow them to access many types
of information and apply skills and strategies for better
understanding.
