2. Indie Rock Indie rock is a term that is used to describe rock music that is independently produced by small record labels or by the band themselves. Indie rock first started in the united kingdom and them started to grow in the USA in the 1980s but didn’t become well known and popular till the 2000s. Artists in this genre are known for have control over their own careers therefore releasing singles and albums when they want. Indie rock artists rely on touring, word-of-mouth, local / underground radio stations, local gigs and thanks to new digital technologies the internet has allowed bands to produce mass publicity world wide through sites such as “myspace” and “facebook” . 3. Arctic Monkeys The Arctic Monkeys are the most famous example of how indie bands can make it big by using all the above methods especially local gigs and myspace. They were a small band from Sheffield England, by playing local gigs and fans talking about them their myspace page became a big hit and they attracted a large fan base. Growing Fan base. 4. Independent Record Label Independent record label (or Indie Record label) this is a record label which operates without the help or funding of outside organizations of the major record labels. Indie Record labels are where a great number of bands and musical acts start their careers and find success. Examples of Indie Labels: -Record Label (Band) -Domino Records. (Arctic monkeys) -Epitaph Records. ( You me at six) -Dome Records. -Expansion Records.
5. Indie Record Labels Growth. The emergence of the MP3 File in the early 2000s allowed indie record labels to produce their own songs and publish them with out the help of major record labels, this meant that indie record labels were able to compete with major record labels. The creation of the indie scene from underground events from London, New York and Los Angeles saw the birth of the indie genre. During this time major record labels focused their marketing and promoting of commercial radios and TV channels, where as the new digital age saw the start of online stores such as Apple’s iTunes which indie record labels such as “Dome Records” & “Expansion records” in the UK focused on which has allowed indie music to become world known and available to download.
