Lyric Analysis The Harriots – Revolver Joshua Bartolo-Smyth
Revolver - 1st verse (Opening) Unfortunate male no-one to love or to love him. What of the man who’s never been in lovehe’s still waiting for somethingto happenI’ve got no intention of finishing what I startedwhat did you say happened to the broken hearted?I’m waitingfor it to happen Lazy and unmotivated. The person is a loser and does not have the will power to finish anything he starts. Loveless, may have been in love and had his heartbroken.
Revolver – Chorus Selling you soul – an act of desperation, therefore wants to get out of his situation. we both noyou'd sell your soulbut you keep running awaywe both knowyou'd sell your souljust for a tasteJack the lad, scallywags back with a chip on his shoulderbut please spare him the revolverI already told youJack the lad, scallywags back with a chip on his shoulderbut please spare him the revolverI already told youyour in a world of your own Cowardly – running away from his problems. Chip on his shoulder – used to describe someone that feels inferior and oversensitive. Jack the lad – an irresponsible young man with no thoughts of responsibilities, just seeks pleasures. Revolver – a weapon often associated with suicide. Therefore space him suicide. He may be contemplating suicide. Think to himself to much.
Revolver – 2nd Verse Friday nights are spent on his ownwatching repeats of 80's TV showsjust waiting for it to happenI ignore his comments and his arrogant lineswith his money in his pocket as he’s dressed to the ninesjust waitingfor it to happen Friday nights – typically a night for socializing. Loner - unsocial, stuck inside and does not want to go out. The person has a narrow mind, may be uneducated and not friendly. He is tight with his money. Dressed to the nines – a phrase used to describe someone in formal or fancy clothing.
Revolver – 3rd verse Breaking hearts – common theme through out. He has an upsetting smile with a smile that could break a million heartshe writes a letter to the one that’s gonea disappointing end from a promised startdon’t stare into the light for too long One that’s gone – this could mean a loved one that has left him or pass away. He had a good start in life but along his road of life he has become distracted and failed. He has become a disappointment. Staring at light – often an image that represents death. The light at the end of the tunnel. This backs up his thoughts about suicide.
