4. Jennifer Ansberry
• I’m originally from Clarence, New
York, which is a suburb northeast of
Buffalo.
• I graduated from Buffalo State
College with a B.S. in Elementary &
Special Education and a M.S. in
Reading.
• When I was married in 1999, I
relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. In
August of 2007, I moved to Medina.
6. My teaching experience includes
second grade, third grade, fourth
grade, and special education.
I taught in New York for 10 years
at Country Parkway Elementary in
the Williamsville School District.
I have been with Highland Schools since
2000.
7. Be Prepared
Use marking period closings, the start
of a new month, or holidays to check
on the status of your child’s supplies.
• Wide-ruled notebook paper • 4 wide-ruled spiral notebooks
• Sharpened and labeled #2 pencils (red, blue, green, purple)
• An eraser • A pair of scissors
• 12 colored pencils • 4oz. Liquid glue
• 1 Box of 24 crayons
• 1 yellow highlighter
• A red pen
• • 1 dry erase marker
A large cloth or canvas pencil
pouch • 3 x 5 index cards
• 1 composition book • Additional supplies for art:
• An expandable file folder (plastic ruler, markers, Sharpies, glue
with 7-9 tabs) sticks, and pencil sharpener
**No Trappers, Please**
8. It is greatly appreciated when students donate the
following items:
Tissues are needed throughout the year, but
especially during cold and allergy season.
Sanitizing Wipes to clean classroom surfaces.
Hand Sanitizer to help control the spread of germs.
Old, clean, cotton socks to be used as “erasers” for our white
boards.
9. The children will be bringing home their textbooks to cover.
• If you are using the stretchy fabric book-covers, then you will
need the JUMBO size for most of their books to prevent damage
to the book spines.
• The homemade, paper-bag book-covers work well. They fit the
different sized books properly, and they allow the students to
label and decorate their books, too. Please take care to not get
tape directly on the books when making these type of book-
covers.
10. Reading
Reading skills will be taught and reinforced using
our reading series, Houghton Mifflin and
supplemental chapter books.
* Please encourage your child to read at home daily!
Math
Math skills will be taught and reinforced using
our math series, Everyday Math.
* Please encourage your child to practice their
math facts daily and bring home their Student
Reference Book (SRB) regularly.
11. Writing
Cursive handwriting (review),
English and writing skills will be
taught through the Write Source and
supplemental materials.
Spelling
Spelling instruction will be taught through the
Zaner-Bloser Spelling Connections Program.
This workbook will connect spelling to
vocabulary, reading, writing and cursive
handwriting skills.
12. Science
Science concepts will be taught and
reinforced using our science series,
Macmillan McGraw-Hill and supplemental
activities.
Our units of study will be plants, matter,
weather and scientific inquiry.
Social Studies
Social Studies concepts will be taught
and reinforced using our series, Scott
Foresman Social Studies- Ohio. Our
focus will be on Ohio’s history,
geography, culture, economics and
government. These areas will be
presented chronologically and include
opportunities for individual or group
research.
13. Please support your child’s participation
in this year’s reading theme at home.
Highland data supports the studies that
show reading is directly related to
student’s achievement.
Please make a commitment to
spend at least 5 minutes a day
reviewing math facts.

16. Happy Birthday !
On your child’s birthday, you may send
in a treat for the class if you wish.
Treats can be brought in either first
thing in the morning or dropped off in
the office during the day. If your child
has a summer birthday or any other day
that we are not in school, please send in
a note if you’d like to send in a treat.
We can then determine the best date to
celebrate.
17. 1. Listen, follow directions, and do
things the first time you are asked.
2. Respect others and their property.
3. Raise your hand to answer questions
4. Be prepared for every class.
5. Do your best at all times.
6. Follow all school and safety rules.
18. All students in fourth grade are required to
maintain an Assignment Book with teacher
modeling and guidance. This organizational
tool should go home and back to school
every day.
Parents can support assignment responsibility
by checking Assignment Book daily !
All homework is to be turned in the morning of
the day it is due. Please contact me if problems
occurred with the completion of homework.
19. • Use this folder, along with the assignment
book, to build great organizational strategies
in your child. Strive for student
independence as a goal this year.
• This organizational tool is meant to hold homework assignments,
returned graded assignments, school informational letters, parent or teacher
notes, etc. as they are transported between home and school daily.
• Please guide your child in correctly using the pockets of this folder at
home. The pockets are labeled “Return to School” side for homework, notes,
etc. and the “Take Home” side which should be emptied every evening.
• Students should be bringing home graded work. If you are not
seeing any graded papers, then check with your child.
20. • For the safety of the school, we request that
all visitors enter and sign-in at the office.
• Students should arrive in the classrooms no earlier than
8:45 a.m. Students arriving earlier must wait in the office
for their safety. The Latch Key Program is available to
families in need of this service.
• When the daily routine changes and students need to
leave school early or get picked-up by an adult, send in a
note or call the office. Adults sign out children in the
office or art room, not from the students’ classrooms.
• Please encourage student responsibility by not entering the classrooms
after 3:45 p.m. to get forgotten homework, books, etc. on a routine basis.

22. Communication
It is so important to keep lines of communication open between
home and school. Contact between adults can often clarify what
happens at school and home. Since I’m not always available to
meet before or after school, it always works best to schedule a
conference to discuss your child. Please do not hesitate to contact
me at any time with questions or concerns the following ways:
• a written note sent in with your child. ( I prefer)
• phone message left with the main office
• e-mail sent to jansberry@highlandschools.org
Also, look at my webpage for classroom newsletters and other
information.
