1. Earth’s Interior Vocabulary
Seismic wave: A wave of movement within Earth’s interior.
Mantle: Earth’s second and largest layer of tectonic plates.
Core: Earth’s third and hottest layer of iron and nickel.
Crust: Layer we live on made of rocks, dirt, and fossils.
Lithosphere: Solid outer layer of Earth that consists of crust and upper
mantle.
Oceanic Crust: The denser part of the crust that is made up of different
elements than the continental crust.
Continental Crust: Part of crust that is made up of less dense elements
than that of the oceanic crust.
P-Wave: Primary waves that can go through liquids or solids.
S-Waves: Secondary waves that can only go through solids.
Asthenosphere: Soft lower part of mantle in which tectonic
plates<things that shape the Earth> move about.
