In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in
popularity in domestic robots, which are slowly
becoming as essential to every household as a personal
computer. In the past, robots have been used to
perform tasks that too dangerous or difficult for
humans to do. Now, they are being programmed to
perform daily tasks for their human owners.
3. How did this trend come about? The first domestic
robot to be released commercially was the
Roomba, put forth by iRobot in 2002. What was
considered the first autonomous machine became
very popular and by the end of 2003, there were
over 600,000 units installed. The market grew at a
rapid rate and by 2007, there were over 4 million
domestic robots in place. The International
Federation of Robotics foresees that the market
will grow to 22 million by the end of 2016,
outnumbering robots used in entertainment and
leisure by several million units.
