2. Answer the following very briefly 5X2=10M
a) Explain Isobar Diagram.

e) Distinguish between ‘Initial Settlement’ and ‘Final Settlement’.
3. Answer the following briefly 5X3=15M
a) The inner diameter of a sampling tube and that of cutting edge are 70 mm and 68 mm
respectively, their outer diameters are 72 mm and 74 mm respectively. Determine the inside
clearance, outside clearance and area ratio of the sample.
b) Differentiate between ‘General Shear Failure’ and ‘Local Shear Failure’.
c) Discuss the effect of water table on Bearing Capacity of soil.
d) Write short notes on group capacity, spacing of piles and efficiency of pile group.
e) What are the stability requirements of a Retaining Wall? Explain how drainage is provided.

4. Explain the standard penetration test along with the corrections applied for ‘N’ values.
5. Explain different types of slope failures and different factors of safety.
6. Explain the necessity of pile foundation and describe various types of pile foundations.
7. A square footing is to be designed to carry a load of 500 kN. If the depth of foundation is 1.5m,
determine suitable size of foundation with a factor of safety of 2.5, when the water table is (i) at
foundation level and (ii) at a depth of 0.6 m below the foundation level. Take C= 15 kN/m2, = 200
and  = 16 kN/m3, sat = 19 kN/m3 ( for = 200 , Nc = 14.8, Nq = 6.4, N = 5.4)
8. A normally consolidated clay has a LL of 50 and Cc of 0.95. Due to construction of footing the average
stress at the centre of the clay layer has increased from 2 kg/cm2 to 3 kg/cm2. Find the settlement of
the footing, if the thickness of the compressible layer is 4.0 m. Take G =2.7 and natural water content
of clay = 40%. Assume double drainage.
9. A pile group consisting of 9 friction piles of 300 mm diameter and length 10 m is arranged in 3 rows
at spacing of 750 mm C/C. The piles are driven into a deposit of clay whose properties are Cu = 100
kN/m2 and sat = 20 kN/m3. Determine the safe load on the pile group. The other data given are, F.S.
= 3.0, = 0.6 and Nc = 9.0
