Backstrom Third Team Case Study
Last spring in his third season, Kurtis Kloke and Spencer Backstrom each earned Second Team all–
Northwest Conference honors. Backstrom was also selected Third Team all–Region by the
American Baseball Coaches Association. He posted 85 strikeouts in 60 innings of work with 14
appearances to his credit. He finished the season with a 4–2 mark, four saves and a 1.95 ERA en
route to second team all–Northwest Conference honors. Kloke had 12 multi–hit games with a team–
leading 40 hits and a share of the team lead with 26 RBIs.
In his second season as the Boxers' head coach, he guided the Boxers back to the Northwest

Henry Chadwick: Use Of Statistics In Major League Baseball

Statistics
15 May 2015
Statistics are used daily in a number of fields. Statistics can be defined as the practice of collecting,
classifying, analyzing, and interpreting numerical data in large quantities to determine probability.
Statistics are even used prominently in sports such as Major League Baseball. Sports analysts in
major league baseball look at a number of statistics to make predictions and define strategies for
their teams, so they an influence a favorable outcome. Major league baseball depends on statistics.
Statistics in baseball started with Henry Chadwick. Chadwick was an Englishman who wasn't
known for his on the field performance, rather his use of analyzing and reporting on teams. He was

A selected, committee of baseball reporters will gather together to look at the players with the
highest statistics. In hitting, there is the Silver Slugger Award which is given to the best offensive
player at each position. The committee looks at a hitter's RBI, batting average, and clutch hitting
statistic. The Cy Young Award is awarded to the best pitcher in the American league and the best
pitcher in the National League each year. The Baseball Writers Association of America determines
who the Cy Young Pitchers are. The Baseball Writers Association will look at the pitchers ERA,
opponents bating average against the hitter, and their winning percentage to help conclude who the
winner will be. Gold Glove Awards are honors given to eighteen fielders each year, nine in the
National League and nine in the American League. A fielder's batting statistics are not used to
determine if they will receive a Gold Glove Award, instead it is solely based on their fielding
performance. Coaches and managers are the ones who vote for Golden Glove winners. Fielders with
high outputs, low number of errors, and their overall fielding percentage stats have a guaranteed
chance of winning the award. Sports analysts look at statistics to determine who is the best players

The Latino Model: Roberto Clemente Essay
During the mid–1950's, Major League Baseball was in the midst of an influential movement. Jackie
Robinson had broken baseball's "color barrier" in 1947, which helped usher in the participation of
other minorities, especially the Latinos. Just as the blacks were faced with adversity, the Latino
players experienced the same. The teams integrated slowly and sportswriters often scorned the
players having difficulty developing English as a second language (Regalado 678). Roberto
Clemente joined this complicated era of baseball and his reputation was backed with a stellar
baseball career, which set the foundation for the involvement of many other Latino players. With
Clemente's cultivated background, one can see how he became to be one of ... Show more content

Not only did he have the individual statistics, but he also helped lead the Pirates to two World Series
Championships, in 1960 and 1971; he won the MVP for the 1971 series as well. He thought about
retirement after the 1971 season but felt there was more to be gained in representing the Latino
population. Following the 1972, where he had achieved the milestone of 3,000 career hits, he went
to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua but perished when his plane crashed in the ocean.
A few months after his death, in April 1973, the Baseball Writers of America voted to induct
Clemente into the Baseball Hall of Fame, where he became the first Latino player to ever be
inducted. While he may seem he couldn't have been any better on the field, he was just as great off
the field. Clemente knew that leadership and social responsibility in the Latino world was also a part
of his career (Regalado 679). In fact, he stated, "Lots of kids will try to imitate me, and maybe I will
have the chance to do some good for people," in an interview with the New York Times (Regalado
679). Clemente's presence on and off the field challenged the misconceptions about Latino players,
especially those from Puerto Rico, by the typical American at the time. Driven by the need to
succeed, he emerged as a symbol for not only Latino recognition but also Puerto Rican (Regalado
683). Many Latinos left their homelands to

Talking About Practice Analysis
Talking About Practice As Allen Iverson once infamously said, "We talkin' 'bout practice." Not,
however, with the insignificant connotation attributed to practice in Iverson's notorious press
conference. Some people dream of how perfect their lives would be if only they were blessed with
the scarce and extraordinary skills possessed by the world's most renowned athletes. In reality, the
world is filled with exceptionally talented men and women who never sniff the likes of the
Olympics or a professional league. It is only a select few people who choose to harvest their dreams
in the fields of hard work and dedication. It is only a select few people who choose to forge their
gifts in the fires of determination and sacrifice. (Parallelism). When talking about hard workers,

game when it comes to baseball. As a former travel baseball player I have seen dedication and hard
work take me from a benchwarmer to a core player on a successful team. The memory of my first
home–run remains firmly entrenched in my memory. I remember the sweltering summer heat. I
remember seeing the fastball flying towards the plate, and then flying mere inches beyond the fence.
I remember seeing my teammates crowded around the plate as I rounded third base. Most
importantly, however, I remember my thoughts as I rounded the bases. After the ball barely cleared
the fence my thoughts immediately veered to all the work that got me to that point. The Wednesday
nights that past winter spent traveling 45 minutes to a practice facility, practicing for hours, and then
driving 45 minutes back. The times I showed up early to games to get in extra batting practice. The
workouts when I did that one extra rep. I thought of these moments because I knew that they were

How To Write A Descriptive Essay About Hardball
After getting 27 straight outs today Randy Johnson becomes the oldest pitcher, at 40 years old, to
ever throw a perfect game. The Diamondbacks beat the Braves 2–0 tonight. He struck out 13 of the
27 batters and was only in one count that reached 3 balls. This perfect game comes as the 17th of all
time. Most 40 year old pitchers get worse as the game goes on but that was quite the opposite
tonight for the southpaw. Cy Young threw a perfect game in 1904 at the age of 37. He also held the
record of being the oldest to throw a perfect game until tonight. How ironic that Randy surpassed
that and has 5 Cy Young awards of his own. "A game like this was pretty special" Randy Johnson
said. He went on to say that perfect games do not happen often and he is honored to be able to throw
one himself. This game was also his second no–hitter even though the first was nowhere close to

23,381 fans cheered him on at the end of the game for what great feat he had done. "Anybody is
capable of doing anything on any given day," Johnson said. Even after throwing the whole game
Johnson was still throwing upper 90's in the late innings of the game. It goes to show what
incredible arm he has. Johnson shut down the Braves offense all daw with his fastball and deceiving
slider. The perfect game tonight snaps a five game losing streak for the Diamondbacks. It is a great

Since the Toronto Blue Jays were established back in 1977, the team has been World Series
champions only twice which was in the 1992 and 1993 seasons. Those back to back championships
are the last World Series the team has reached. Despite the success of the Blue Jays in the past
couple seasons where they made it to back to back appearances in the ALCS (American League
Championship Series), this 2017 season has been very disappointing. With an aging and injury–
prone roster, it is time for the Blue Jays to start rebuilding the team once again. The definition of

Baseball Franchise: The Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves are a storied baseball franchise that began as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871.
As the Red Stockings, the eventual Braves were one of major league baseball's first two charter
franchises along with the Chicago Cubs. The franchise changed its name to the Braves in 1912, and
moved from Boston to Milwaukee in 1953, then to Atlanta in 1966. Below, inspired by the
informative Leo Wells on Sports blog, we list historical highlights from the team's years in Boston,
Milwaukee and Atlanta.
The Boston Years: 1871–1953
The Braves became one of the National League's charter franchises in 1876, and went on to win
pennants in 1877 and 1878.
In 1914, after a long run of mediocrity, the team turned around their last place standing by going 41–

strife.
In 1953, after buying out his partners in the team, Lou Perini, who had taken ownership in the team
in 1935, moved it to Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Years: 1953–1966
In its first season in Milwaukee, the team produced a 92–62 record, drawing in 1.8 million fans; a
National League record at the time. The team's success after relocating would cause other teams to
consider relocating.
In 1957, the squad won another pennant under the pitching of Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette and Bob
Buhl, and the hitting of Eddie Matthews and hank Aaron, who ended the season as National League
MVP.
In 1962, Perini Sold the franchise to a group headed by William Bartholomay, a move that would
lead to the team's relocation to Atlanta.
During their time as the Milwaukee Braves, the squad remains the only major league team that
played more than one season and never had a record under.500.

Sports: The Use Of Performance Enhancing Drugs In Sports
To start this highly controversial topic I would like to start with the basics. The definition of
Performance–enhancing drugs. "Performance–enhancing substances, also known as performance–

humans. A well–known example involves doping in sports were banned physical performance–
enhancing drugs are used by athletes and bodybuilders." (Wikimedia foundation) If the PEDs are
used in sports by athletes and bodybuilders alike. When did this all start? According to Larry D.

This was the major sting to the world of athletics. Not only to baseball but the US as a whole. The
well known Clemens was a MVP and a CY Young award winner practically destined for the hall of
fame. Soon after famous athletes like Barry Bonds and Lance Armstrong were also accused of using
PEDs. The strict enforcement is backed up by the risky side effects to doping. The side effects
include fever, reduced platelet counts, hypertension, vasoconstriction, gastrointestinal irritability,
impaired oxygen delivery to tissues, kidney damage and iron overload. (Technische Universität
München) Not only do these drugs pose threats to the athletes health but they help the athletes win,
and sometimes athletes would do anything to win, for the money or the fame. Like the antics of a
crack cocaine addict searching for a high, these athletes want the high of fame and fortune. This is
very dangerous because after a while an addict will go too far with drugs and overdose causing
death. Unlike crack cocaine the drug is not addictive but the fame and fortune is. re these drugs
worth the risk? Can there be separate leagues for athletic competition – one that allows PEDs and
one that does not?

Descriptive Essay On People In Life
There are some people in life, that inspire you, while others can make it more exciting. But, there
are a few that can do both. Inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel
something, especially to do something creative. The people you meet or see in life that can do both
seem to influence your very own decisions. They produce unwavering emotions and never seem to
concede. These people are the true exemplars of the aphorism, "You only live once." These people
know how to fight for their lives, or hold back their emotions for the greater good of others.
Shannon Cummings, Rick Porcello, and Devin/Jason Mccourty are my illustrations of people that
live life to the fullest and try to help others that aren't able to do the same on their own. They are
honest when they need to be, but they know when to tell a white lie to keep from hurting others.
These people are philanthropists, donating their time, money, or energy to help others. They are
people that are stoic, keeping their emotions to themselves when they are down, which allows others
to do the same. Some of them are underdogs in their areas of expertise, but they defy expectations
regularly. They are people that overcome many challenges in their way throughout life. These
people share the same characteristics as many others in the world, but it is how they use them that
makes them extraordinary. It's not the hand you're dealt that wins the game, it's how you play the

Besides for last year's runner up, there is only one team which has a realistic chance to make the
postseason from the weak AL Central in 2017. The Indians came as close as possible to winning the

The bullpen is poor; Francisco Rodriguez wouldn't be the closer on almost every other Major
League team, but represents the Tigers' best option. The main issue that the Tigers will have to battle
is longevity. Their roster is chock full of veterans–it's too old to not expect to get bitten by the injury
bug–and if some of their stars go down early they could be holding a fire sale at the deadline. I
expect them to be in contention for the division until the all–star break, when they will lose steam
and the Indians will pull away. However, expect them to remain in contention for a wild card spot.
After the Indians and the Tigers, the Central is pretty bad. The Royals, Twins, and White Sox will all
try to stay out of the basement. Although I don't think that the Twins are the safest from this, they
have the best chance to finish in third place in the division. They have a few bright spots at the plate
in Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano, and good defensive players with major offensive upside in Byron
Buxton and Max Kepler, but there isn't much more to look forward to. Joe Mauer is aging, and the
addition of Jason Castro, pitch framing extraordinaire, doesn't get me too piqued. Their rotation is

Coraline Quotes
In the book Coraline Coraline goes through a plethora of stages starting from being a naïve child to
eventually evolving into a girl with a strong identity who is fully aware of who she is and proud of
who she has become. At the beginning of the book Coraline is your typical kid who is filled with
curiosity and an urge for exploration. This is best illustrated on page 26 when Coraline first ventures
into the alternate universe. " Coraline went through the door; she wondered what the empty flat
would be like if that was where the corridor lead" (Gaiman 26). Although Coraline is unaware of her
surroundings (due to the fact that she just moved there) this does not stop Coraline from being
adventurous and exploring the unknown. This act of Coraline going into the corridor while having
no idea where the corridor leads and without even thinking about the possible consequences of this
action shows Coraline's overall lack of maturity and her naive childlike ways. Before Coraline
makes her ultimate transition from naïve and fearless child to a brave, confident, and independent
girl she further displays her childlike ways by always having a strong desire to receive what she
wants; and if she fails to get what she wants she expresses her displeasure. This is clearly illustrated
by two quotes in the book. In the first quote Coraline is upset that her mother will not purchase a
pair of gloves she likes. " Coraline saw some Day–Glo green gloves she liked a lot. Her mother

Throwing Strikes by R.A. Dickey and About R.A. Dickey Essay
The book, Throwing Strikes, by R.A. Dickey is a fascinating biography about the author, a
39yearold knuckle ball pitcher who currently plays Major League Baseball for the Toronto Blue
Jays baseball team. R.A. Dickey tells the story in an informal, conversational writing style written in
first person about his struggles in the beginning of his baseball career, and how he miraculously
turns his career around after getting advice and working with his idol, Phil Niekro, a former Atlanta
Braves ballplayer who was nicknamed "Knucksie" because of his usage and skill level with the
knuckleball.

Luckily, his hard work started to pay off, and Dickey moved back up the ranks with the Rangers. He
played decent there, but then got traded and while using the knuckleball as his primary pitch, Dickey
got back on top. It took a lot of faith, hope, and determination, but R.A. Dickey achieved his dream
of making it into the major leagues. Now, he's one of the most respected pitchers in the game and
proof that with hard work and devotion, anyone can overcome whatever life throws at them.
Although the author did not state the exact purpose of writing his biography, I believe R.A. Dickey
shared his amazing baseball story in order to encourage and inspire young readers like me,
reinforcing throughout his biography that hard work and dedication pays off.
The theme of the book is "to never give up on your dream." Even if you think your goal seems
impossible, it never hurts to dream big. That is exactly what R.A. Dickey did. R.A. Dickey's dream
since he was a little kid was to be a pitcher in the Major Leagues. But once he got there, he
struggled. Phil
Niekro told R.A. Dickey, "If you want to be the best, you have TO BE the best." R.A. took that to
heart, and from that point on really worked harder than ever to be the best knuckleball pitcher ever.
Every practice R.A. worked his butt off and in the games he pitched in, he used all his power, blood,
sweat and tears and put it to work. Luckily R.A. Dickey's dream paid off, and he gets paid millions

Unfortunately for Ralph, Vanellope, a race in Sugar Rush, had stolen his medal and used it as an
entryway to a race. From Vanellope's actions, Ralph is placed onto a deconstructed path, a path that
he must fix himself in order to gain what was lost. According to Seger, the hero must go through a
series of challenges to overcome their enemy and accomplish their goal (3). Although, Ralph
immediately goes against Vanellope, he understands that Vanellope is just like him, further making
come to a consensus that Vanellope will win the race and that Ralph will head back home and
receive his recognition. However, the problems are as follows: Vanellope does not own a kart, she
does not know how to drive, and they are being hunted by the King's men. Throughout their
adventure, Ralph and Vanellope form a friendly bond rather than a hostile one than before. Here, we
can see that the archetype of Vanellope is the Good Mother: an archetype that guides and nurtures
the hero. Vanellope is the Good Mother because of her ability to navigate through out Sugar Rush.
But even through solving these problems in a nice "sweet" manner, a new problem unveils itself as
we are introduced to another new

Harvey Velocity Theory
Shortly after the Mets' 4–2 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday afternoon, the Mets quietly
announced that RHP Matt Harvey was being sent to the 15 day disabled list for "discomfort in his
right shoulder." This roster move followed weeks of struggles on the mound for Harvey, who has
thus far pitched to career–worst marks in ERA and K/9 marks, en route to a 4–10 record on the
season. While he's still actually pitching respectably (by FIP, Harvey's been keeping pace with Zach
Greinke, Jordan Zimmerman, and David Price), this is not the season we've come to expect from the
Dark Knight. So what has been tormenting the pride of Gotham?
The Velocity Theory
One big factor could be Harvey's velocity. Harvey's average velocity on all of his pitches ... Show

But no pitcher will ever go up on the mound without any defense behind them (unless you're Satchel
Paige), because most pitchers won't be striking out everyone they face (and by most, I mean all).
Inevitably, some batter will make contact and put the ball in place, at which point, getting the batter
out becomes the responsibility of the defense. Typically, some balls will fall in for hits, but most
won't. The percentage of the balls put in play that become hits is measured using BABIP, or Batting
Average on Balls In Play (it's also pretty fun to say). BABIP can be used to measure how good the
defense is behind a pitcher, in addition to how unlucky or lucky they are. Comparing their current
season figure season to their career number can let you know if a pitcher is over or under–
performing. For instance, Jon Lester of the Cubs has been pitching this season with a .265 BABIP,
which is significantly less than his career number of .299 – this indicates that he's been the
beneficiary of good defense and good luck while on the mound.
So what does this have to do with Harvey? Everything. On the season, Harvey is pitching to the tune
of an incredible .353 BABIP – more than 60 points worse than his career average. His .353 figure is
the second worst in the MLB – only Robbie Ray is pitching with a worse BABIP, .364 (and Ray's
career BABIP is .339, so the difference between

Analysis Of The 91-70 American League Champions Cleveland...
Coming off of a terrific 2016 season, the 91–70 American League Champions Cleveland Indians had
high expectations going into 2017. The Indians made themselves into a seemingly unstoppable
force. Cleveland had dominated in the regular season, especially in their division as they were also
crowned American League Central regular season champions. They had helped themselves by
winning a franchise high 14 straight games. This gave the Tribe tons of momentum heading into the
postseason. On their trip to the World Series, the Indians managed to only lose one game.
Everything was going Cleveland's way until injuries arose in the pitching staff. The Indians had
ended up only being able to pitch Corey Kluber and Josh Tomlin in the last three ... Show more

In the 2017 season the, Cleveland had shown off this exceptionality by hitting 27 more home runs
and 14 more base hits than they had in 2016 (ESPN, 2017). Not only was the Indian's offense a
force, but their pitching staff is also feared by teams around the league. To be a good baseball team
you must have a strong pitching core, but "strong" is just beginning to describe the Indian's pitching.
Many people have even considered it to be one of the best pitching staffs in the history of baseball.
With a starting rotation containing Mike Clevenger, Danny Salazar, Trevor Bauer, Carlos Carrasco
and Corey Kluber, teams usually struggled offensively. Through the course of the regular season
Cleveland's pitching went from exceptional to elite. Trevor Bauer started pitching like Carlos
Carrasco, Carrasco started pitching like Corey Kluber, and Kulber started pitching better than he had
when he won his Cy Young award. Cleveland's starters maintained a 3.30 earned run average and
held their opponents' batting average to .236 (ESPN, 2017). Along with the starters, the Tribe's
bullpen was almost always unhittable. Having Bryan Shaw, Cody Allen and Andrew Miller to close
out a game was a player combination almost unmatched across the league. Especially since Shaw,
Allen and Miller have a combined 2. 63 earned run average. The strength of the Indians pitching
staff is a superior trait to have in order to build a good

News and Analysis: Stephen Strasburg Shutdown

SUMMARY
The Washington Post news article, "Stephen Strasburg Shutdown" discussed the Washington
nationals decision that manager mike Rizzo made prior to the season start to shut down the former
number 1 pick, there ace Stephen Strasburg after he reached the 160 innings pitch mark no matter
where they were in the postseason race, they were shutting him down for the remainder of the
season. This created controversy around the sports world for the whole year of 2012 and is still
being talked about on sports talk shows today. The nationals finished the regular season with the
best record in the major leagues and a lot of that success was because of #37. He carried the pitching

Qualitative research plays a huge role in this article because of Rizzo's decision making this season.
This method explains Rizzo's decision and makes him look a little better than the people persuaded
him. He did this simply for security for the future, which makes total sense but most fans live for the
now and professional baseball managers have to worry about winning now, but also later in the
future and in the nationals situation setting an inning limit on Strasburg was the smart thing to do.
Positivism is based simply the truth, facts and former experience. Rizzo before managing the
nationals was the Chicago cubs manager in the early 2000's when they drafted back to back top
pitching prospects Kerry Wood and Mark Prior who were both hobbled with arm injuries early in
their career and Rizzo did not put an inning limit on them. That decision turned out to be terribly
wrong and resulted in more and more season ending injuries for Wood and prior who now don't even
play in the major leagues. Rizzo's past bad experiences helped him make this decision. With all due
respect to the fans of the nationals which includes myself, Rizzo's decision wasn't smart for the now,
but we will all be thanking him in the future when Strasburg's is carrying the Nationals to many
Championships in the future. At first I questioned the decision thinking that the Nats had a chance
this year to win it all, well the

Personal Narrative: My Favorite Baseball Player
If you happen to be at an IVC baseball game next semester, be sure to be on the lookout for our very
own pitcher, Steven Panela. Or as his teammates call him, Panelita, for he used to be the smallest
guy on the team. He played for the De Anza Bulldogs and helped take them to the CIF semifinals.
Even though they lost in the semifinals, I have full confidence that we will be seeing great things
from him and the IVC team this upcoming season. I say that because that same year that him and
Calexico went to the semifinals, he was awarded Pitcher of the Year and First Team All–League for

playing in the Major Leagues even though he says it is highly unlikely. While it is hard to get in the
Major Leagues, I can't help but think getting Pitcher of the Year is a step in the right direction.
Steven's major is in Civil engineering. He loves math so it is only natural that he would gravitate
towards engineering. His brother also majored in engineering, so you could say he was destined to
follow the path to engineering. Steven owns a reliable 2005 Honda Civic, which gets the job done
and gets him from point a to point b. If money was no object, Steven would like to drive a
Volkswagen Microbus. He doesn't know exactly why he likes the Microbus but that it just calls out
to him. Stevens biggest pet peeve is a slow texter. He dislikes when someone takes forever to reply

The New York Yankees Baseball Organization
Over a 114–year period between 1901 and 2015, the New York Yankees baseball organization has
taken sole positioning as the most successful franchise in the professional baseball world. As a
whole the franchise has won: 43 American League pennants and 27 world championship titles. With
statistics and accomplishments this vast, it is no wonders the Yankees are renowned and
acknowledged as one of the most outstanding baseball teams in the sport. The New York Yankee's
franchise was founded in 1901, in Baltimore, Maryland. The franchise played its inaugural season
two year later on January 9, 1903. The founders of this historic franchise organization were two
gentlemen by the names of Frank Farrell and Bill Devery. This franchise has dominated the sport of
Major League Baseball over a century, recording 20 seasons with at least 100 wins "Hiergesell."
When the franchise was moved to Manhattan from Baltimore they received the name Highlanders
and were relocated to their new home field known as Hilltop Park "Yankees Timeline." The 1923
squad would always be the most memorable team because they defeated the New York Giants to
earn the first of a total of 27 World Series championships (the all–time record in professional
baseball). The New York Yankees (1936–1939 and 1949–1953) and the Oakland A's (1972–1974),

Under new general manager Farhan Zaidi, the Dodgers underwent a dramatic overhaul in the 2014–

After displaying dominance throughout the 2014 playoffs, Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner
produced one the most historic World Series performances as San Francisco captured its third

Attempting to turn their fortune around in 2016, the Giants made a few key signings in the

while the Giants also sured up their rotation behind Bumgarner by signing 2015 World Series

putting his career at jeopardy. Once Dickey turned to his Christian faith, he began to find his self–
awareness that he was searching for and started to excel in his performance. Although he did well,
he wanted to be the best, so he paid attention to the game as a whole and realized that 'one is only
good as their last inning'. With this thought in the back of his head he came to the conclusion that he
needs to learn from the mistakes he made in previous games rather than dwelling on them. Also, he
realized that the fans play a crucial part in the game, they know how to get in the players head and
make them feel for their mistakes, so having a rock hard confidence is key, not only for the fans, but
for big games like the playoffs as well. Dickey's new found confidence is what put him on the map,

This is simple yet very strong statement, shows that Smoltz wasn't playing the game for anybody or

middle of a game but instead of calling it quits he would alter his mechanics to take some of the
stress off of the injured tissue. This shows that he was not afraid to fail because changing his
mechanics during the middle of a game could result in getting shelled by the other team in front of
thousands of people and worst of all, letting his team down. Smoltz was a very positive guy. He
states, "If there is anything that I've learned in this journey, it's how to make the best out of really
crappy situations" (8). This is a very good lesson the reader can take away from the book because if

Kershaw was injured his record was 11 – 2, with a 1.79 ERA, and a 16.1 – 1 strikeout to walk ratio.
If Kershaw had not been injured and continued at the pace he was at, he would have been the clear
NL Cy Young Award winner and NL MVP Award winner. Kershaw's return is highly anticipated
especially by the Dodgers because if they have him back at the level he was playing at, that means
they will be going into the playoffs as one of the best teams. Kershaw will be joining a Dodgers
team that has played some of their best baseball this entire year. Since Kershaw's last start, the
Dodgers have gone 35 – 24 and don't look to slow down anytime soon. With the return of Rich Hill
and the great performances from young starting pitchers: Julio Urias, Jose ... Show more content on

If the Dodgers want to make a run in the postseason, their relief pitching needs to be playing at the
level that they are playing right now. As of today, the Dodgers relief pitching is tied for second in
ERA with a 3.41 in the National League. The more incredible thing about this statistic is that the
Dodgers' relief pitchers have played the most innings in the NL with 482.1, that's almost 100 more
innings than the Washington Nationals, who lead the NL with the lowest ERA. So, even though the
Dodgers are tied in second for lowest ERA among relief pitchers, they have played a lot more
innings than any other

Texas Rangers Research Paper
The Texas Rangers (69–62) try and take the series at Petco Park and face the San Diego Padres (64–
68) in the final game of this three game series. This is a huge game for the Rangers because they are
headed into an off day tomorrow. If they win, they go into the off day feeling good. They lose, and
they have to sit on it for a full day before hitting the field on Friday. The Rangers will turn to Cole
Hamels (2–1, 3.89 ERA) and the San Diego Padres will counter with Ian Kennedy (8–12, 3.94
ERA). This is why the Rangers got Hamels, to pitch in big games down the stretch run. Hamels is
no stranger to big games and it seemingly gets better as the season progresses. In his last start
against the Baltimore Orioles, he pitched eight incredible innings of two hit ball, allowing just one
run in the process. When you look for an ace, Hamels fits the bill because of his incredible track
record in the month of September and October. Hopefully he can keep that going in tonights game.

Kennedy has been about everything that the Padres could've expected, as he has a 3.94 ERA this
season. His career ERA has a 3.93 ERA, so he is right on track for what he has been his whole
career. His last outing was rather impressive though, going 6 2/3 innings of two hit ball, allowing
two runs while walking five and striking out seven. Rangers manager Jeff Banister has released the
following lineup for tonight's contest. Gallo Back in the

Coraline Symbolism
A dream turned into a nightmare. This happens to Coraline, the main protagonist in the novel
Coraline by Neil Gaiman. In the novel, a young girl named Coraline moves into a large house
divides into apartments. She lives with her parents who both work, leaving Coraline to feel ignored.
One day she accesses a portal to a mirror like house where her "other" parents live. At first her
"other" parents seem like a dream, offering her whatever she wants and giving her constant
attention. Coraline soon learns that the "other" world is not all that it seems and that she must escape
in order to save herself and her parents. Unlike most children books, Coraline is a creepy
postmodern fairy tale that uses elements of the uncanny to evoke fear in the reader. Freud's concept
of the uncanny is helpful in explaining the text's appeal, and it's creepy uneasiness. Coraline focuses
on people's fears about existence and identity as individual beings. Coraline must battle against her
other mother to be independent from her and thus develop her own identity and desires. While the
novel appears to be a mild horror story, Henry Selicks' stop action photography adaptation of the
novel has a different tone and uses concepts of the uncanny is more subtle ways. By using added
characters, deleted scenes, and less grotesque imagery Henry Selick is able a children's adventure
story while Neil Gaiman's novel focused on concepts of the uncanny and the fear of losing one's
identity. The film begins with an evocative opening scene in which a pair of skeletal, robotic hands
stich a doll identical to Coraline and then sends it floating out of a window. For most viewers the
doll is viewed as a spy for the other mother. It is a portal between the two worlds that allows the
other mother to cross between both. It is used to heighten the picture's anti realistic, otherworldly
mood (time). The scene was not in the novel and was instead added to make references to the
uncanny that is used more in the novel. The doll being made is uncanny. The stitching of the doll is
unsettling because it is non–human hands acting in a human way. The doll acts as a doppelganger,
an inanimate thing that appears to move but yet is controlled by the other mother,

Red Sox Case Study
For Price, Red Sox, the price is right
An elite starting pitcher will call Fenway Park his home next season for the first time since Jon
Lester was traded to Oakland at the deadline in 2014. The Red Sox signed 30 year old lefty David
Price to a 7–year, $217 million contract this past Tuesday. Price is one of the top starting pitchers in
baseball. He won the 2012 American League Cy Young award after going 20–5 in the regular
season. Boston won the David Price sweepstakes after months of talk about where he would land.
Besides Boston, it is reported that Price was very interested in signing with either the Cubs,
Cardinals, or the team he played for during part of the 2015 season, the Blue Jays.
Price will undoubtedly improve the Red Sox struggling pitching staff, one that finished the season
with a collective 4.39 earned run average and surrendered 178 home runs, the seventh most in the
MLB. Price finished his 2015 campaign with an 18–5 record and a 2.45 ERA, but his most
astonishing numbers came from the second half of the season after he was traded from the Detroit
Tigers to the Toronto Blue Jays. After the trade he went 9–1 with a 2.30 ERA. Even more
astonishing are his numbers at Fenway Park, something that has Red Sox Nation elated. Over his
career, Price has amounted a 6–1 record with a cool 1.95 ERA at America's most beloved ballpark.

In the 2013 American League Division Series between Boston and Tampa Bay, Price criticized Red
Sox slugger David Ortiz for the way he ran the bases after hitting a homerun off of him. The Red
Sox went on to win the World Series, but the bitterness carried on into the 2014 season. In a game
early in the season, Price hit Ortiz with a pitch that started a virtual war between two teams. After
that game, Ortiz expressed his frustration with Price. "It's on. Next time I see (Price), he better put
his gloves on. I have no respect for him

Backstrom Third Team Case Study

  • 1. Backstrom Third Team Case Study Last spring in his third season, Kurtis Kloke and Spencer Backstrom each earned Second Team all– Northwest Conference honors. Backstrom was also selected Third Team all–Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He posted 85 strikeouts in 60 innings of work with 14 appearances to his credit. He finished the season with a 4–2 mark, four saves and a 1.95 ERA en route to second team all–Northwest Conference honors. Kloke had 12 multi–hit games with a team– leading 40 hits and a share of the team lead with 26 RBIs. • 5. The Latino Model: Roberto Clemente Essay During the mid–1950's, Major League Baseball was in the midst of an influential movement. Jackie Robinson had broken baseball's "color barrier" in 1947, which helped usher in the participation of other minorities, especially the Latinos. Just as the blacks were faced with adversity, the Latino players experienced the same. The teams integrated slowly and sportswriters often scorned the players having difficulty developing English as a second language (Regalado 678). Roberto Clemente joined this complicated era of baseball and his reputation was backed with a stellar baseball career, which set the foundation for the involvement of many other Latino players. Not only did he have the individual statistics, but he also helped lead the Pirates to two World Series Championships, in 1960 and 1971; he won the MVP for the 1971 series as well. He thought about retirement after the 1971 season but felt there was more to be gained in representing the Latino population. Following the 1972, where he had achieved the milestone of 3,000 career hits, he went to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua but perished when his plane crashed in the ocean. A few months after his death, in April 1973, the Baseball Writers of America voted to induct Clemente into the Baseball Hall of Fame, where he became the first Latino player to ever be inducted. While he may seem he couldn't have been any better on the field, he was just as great off the field. Clemente knew that leadership and social responsibility in the Latino world was also a part of his career (Regalado 679). In fact, he stated, "Lots of kids will try to imitate me, and maybe I will have the chance to do some good for people," in an interview with the New York Times (Regalado 679). Clemente's presence on and off the field challenged the misconceptions about Latino players, especially those from Puerto Rico, by the typical American at the time. Driven by the need to succeed, he emerged as a symbol for not only Latino recognition but also Puerto Rican (Regalado 683). Many Latinos left their homelands to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Talking About Practice Analysis Talking About Practice As Allen Iverson once infamously said, "We talkin' 'bout practice." Not, however, with the insignificant connotation attributed to practice in Iverson's notorious press conference. Some people dream of how perfect their lives would be if only they were blessed with the scarce and extraordinary skills possessed by the world's most renowned athletes. In reality, the world is filled with exceptionally talented men and women who never sniff the likes of the Olympics or a professional league. As a former travel baseball player I have seen dedication and hard work take me from a benchwarmer to a core player on a successful team. The memory of my first home–run remains firmly entrenched in my memory. I remember the sweltering summer heat. I remember seeing the fastball flying towards the plate, and then flying mere inches beyond the fence. I remember seeing my teammates crowded around the plate as I rounded third base. Most importantly, however, I remember my thoughts as I rounded the bases. After the ball barely cleared the fence my thoughts immediately veered to all the work that got me to that point. The Wednesday nights that past winter spent traveling 45 minutes to a practice facility, practicing for hours, and then driving 45 minutes back. The Diamondbacks beat the Braves 2–0 tonight. He struck out 13 of the 27 batters and was only in one count that reached 3 balls. This perfect game comes as the 17th of all time. • 20. Descriptive Essay On People In Life There are some people in life, that inspire you, while others can make it more exciting. But, there are a few that can do both. Inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. The people you meet or see in life that can do both seem to influence your very own decisions. They produce unwavering emotions and never seem to concede. These people are the true exemplars of the aphorism, "You only live once." These people know how to fight for their lives, or hold back their emotions for the greater good of others. Shannon Cummings, Rick Porcello, and Devin/Jason Mccourty are my illustrations of people that live life to the fullest and try to help others that aren't able to do the same on their own. They are honest when they need to be, but they know when to tell a white lie to keep from hurting others. These people are philanthropists, donating their time, money, or energy to help others. They are people that are stoic, keeping their emotions to themselves when they are down, which allows others to do the same. Some of them are underdogs in their areas of expertise, but they defy expectations regularly. They are people that overcome many challenges in their way throughout life. Coraline Quotes In the book Coraline Coraline goes through a plethora of stages starting from being a naïve child to eventually evolving into a girl with a strong identity who is fully aware of who she is and proud of who she has become. At the beginning of the book Coraline is your typical kid who is filled with curiosity and an urge for exploration. This is best illustrated on page 26 when Coraline first ventures into the alternate universe. " Coraline went through the door; she wondered what the empty flat would be like if that was where the corridor lead" (Gaiman 26). Although Coraline is unaware of her surroundings (due to the fact that she just moved there) this does not stop Coraline from being adventurous and exploring the unknown. This act of Coraline going into the corridor while having no idea where the corridor leads and without even thinking about the possible consequences of this action shows Coraline's overall lack of maturity and her naive childlike ways. Before Coraline makes her ultimate transition from naïve and fearless child to a brave, confident, and independent girl she further displays her childlike ways by always having a strong desire to receive what she wants; and if she fails to get what she wants she expresses her displeasure. This is clearly illustrated by two quotes in the book. In the first quote Coraline is upset that her mother will not purchase a pair of gloves she likes. But no pitcher will ever go up on the mound without any defense behind them (unless you're Satchel Paige), because most pitchers won't be striking out everyone they face (and by most, I mean all). Inevitably, some batter will make contact and put the ball in place, at which point, getting the batter out becomes the responsibility of the defense. Typically, some balls will fall in for hits, but most won't. The percentage of the balls put in play that become hits is measured using BABIP, or Batting Average on Balls In Play (it's also pretty fun to say). BABIP can be used to measure how good the defense is behind a pitcher, in addition to how unlucky or lucky they are. Comparing their current season figure season to their career number can let you know if a pitcher is over or under– performing. For instance, Jon Lester of the Cubs has been pitching this season with a .265 BABIP, which is significantly less than his career number of .299 – this indicates that he's been the beneficiary of good defense and good luck while on the mound. So what does this have to do with Harvey? Everything. On the season, Harvey is pitching to the tune of an incredible .353 BABIP – more than 60 points worse than his career average. His .353 figure is the second worst in the MLB – only Robbie Ray is pitching with a worse BABIP, .364 (and Ray's career BABIP is .339, so the difference between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Indians made themselves into a seemingly unstoppable force. Cleveland had dominated in the regular season, especially in their division as they were also crowned American League Central regular season champions. They had helped themselves by winning a franchise high 14 straight games. This gave the Tribe tons of momentum heading into the postseason. In the 2017 season the, Cleveland had shown off this exceptionality by hitting 27 more home runs and 14 more base hits than they had in 2016 (ESPN, 2017). Not only was the Indian's offense a force, but their pitching staff is also feared by teams around the league. To be a good baseball team you must have a strong pitching core, but "strong" is just beginning to describe the Indian's pitching. Many people have even considered it to be one of the best pitching staffs in the history of baseball. With a starting rotation containing Mike Clevenger, Danny Salazar, Trevor Bauer, Carlos Carrasco and Corey Kluber, teams usually struggled offensively. Through the course of the regular season Cleveland's pitching went from exceptional to elite. Trevor Bauer started pitching like Carlos Carrasco, Carrasco started pitching like Corey Kluber, and Kulber started pitching better than he had when he won his Cy Young award. Cleveland's starters maintained a 3.30 earned run average and held their opponents' batting average to .236 (ESPN, 2017). Along with the starters, the Tribe's bullpen was almost always unhittable. Having Bryan Shaw, Cody Allen and Andrew Miller to close out a game was a player combination almost unmatched across the league. This method explains Rizzo's decision and makes him look a little better than the people persuaded him. He did this simply for security for the future, which makes total sense but most fans live for the now and professional baseball managers have to worry about winning now, but also later in the future and in the nationals situation setting an inning limit on Strasburg was the smart thing to do. Positivism is based simply the truth, facts and former experience. Rizzo before managing the nationals was the Chicago cubs manager in the early 2000's when they drafted back to back top pitching prospects Kerry Wood and Mark Prior who were both hobbled with arm injuries early in their career and Rizzo did not put an inning limit on them. That decision turned out to be terribly wrong and resulted in more and more season ending injuries for Wood and prior who now don't even play in the major leagues. Rizzo's past bad experiences helped him make this decision. With all due respect to the fans of the nationals which includes myself, Rizzo's decision wasn't smart for the now, but we will all be thanking him in the future when Strasburg's is carrying the Nationals to many Championships in the future. • 77. Coraline Symbolism A dream turned into a nightmare. This happens to Coraline, the main protagonist in the novel Coraline by Neil Gaiman. In the novel, a young girl named Coraline moves into a large house divides into apartments. She lives with her parents who both work, leaving Coraline to feel ignored. One day she accesses a portal to a mirror like house where her "other" parents live. At first her "other" parents seem like a dream, offering her whatever she wants and giving her constant attention. Coraline soon learns that the "other" world is not all that it seems and that she must escape in order to save herself and her parents. Unlike most children books, Coraline is a creepy postmodern fairy tale that uses elements of the uncanny to evoke fear in the reader. Freud's concept of the uncanny is helpful in explaining the text's appeal, and it's creepy uneasiness. Coraline focuses on people's fears about existence and identity as individual beings. Coraline must battle against her other mother to be independent from her and thus develop her own identity and desires. While the novel appears to be a mild horror story, Henry Selicks' stop action photography adaptation of the novel has a different tone and uses concepts of the uncanny is more subtle ways. By using added characters, deleted scenes, and less grotesque imagery Henry Selick is able a children's adventure story while Neil Gaiman's novel focused on concepts of the uncanny and the fear of losing one's identity. The film begins with an evocative opening scene in which a pair of skeletal, robotic hands stich a doll identical to Coraline and then sends it floating out of a window. For most viewers the doll is viewed as a spy for the other mother. It is a portal between the two worlds that allows the other mother to cross between both. It is used to heighten the picture's anti realistic, otherworldly mood (time). The scene was not in the novel and was instead added to make references to the uncanny that is used more in the novel. The doll being made is uncanny. The stitching of the doll is unsettling because it is non–human hands acting in a human way. The doll acts as a doppelganger, an inanimate thing that appears to move but yet is controlled by the other mother, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 79. Red Sox Case Study For Price, Red Sox, the price is right An elite starting pitcher will call Fenway Park his home next season for the first time since Jon Lester was traded to Oakland at the deadline in 2014. The Red Sox signed 30 year old lefty David Price to a 7–year, $217 million contract this past Tuesday. Price is one of the top starting pitchers in baseball. He won the 2012 American League Cy Young award after going 20–5 in the regular season. Boston won the David Price sweepstakes after months of talk about where he would land. Besides Boston, it is reported that Price was very interested in signing with either the Cubs, Cardinals, or the team he played for during part of the 2015 season, the Blue Jays. Price will undoubtedly improve the Red Sox struggling pitching staff, one that finished the season with a collective 4.39 earned run average and surrendered 178 home runs, the seventh most in the MLB. Price finished his 2015 campaign with an 18–5 record and a 2.45 ERA, but his most astonishing numbers came from the second half of the season after he was traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Toronto Blue Jays. After the trade he went 9–1 with a 2.30 ERA. Even more astonishing are his numbers at Fenway Park, something that has Red Sox Nation elated. Over his career, Price has amounted a 6–1 record with a cool 1.95 ERA at America's most beloved ballpark. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 2013 American League Division Series between Boston and Tampa Bay, Price criticized Red Sox slugger David Ortiz for the way he ran the bases after hitting a homerun off of him. The Red Sox went on to win the World Series, but the bitterness carried on into the 2014 season. In a game early in the season, Price hit Ortiz with a pitch that started a virtual war between two teams. After that game, Ortiz expressed his frustration with Price. "It's on. Next time I see (Price), he better put his gloves on. I have no respect for him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
