A flagship musical in the West End's first grand alarm clock for over 30 years
The musical, written in 1984 by ABBA songwriters Benny Anderson and BjörnUlvaeus, and Tim Rice
(Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King, Evita). The play depicts a story of love and political intrigue, in the
context of the Cold War in the late 1970s and early 1980s, in which the superpowers attempted to
manipulate an international Chess Championship at the London coliseum theatre for political purposes.
Two of the biggest chess masters in the world, one American, the other Russian, may become the pawns
of their governments as their battle for the world title begins. At the same time, their lives are confused
by a Hungarian refugee, a remarkable woman who becomes the center of their emotional triangle.
Includes the international hit singles "I Know Him So Well" and "One Night in Bangkok" with the songs
Anthem, Someone Else's Story, Heaven Help My Heart and Pity The Child. This new West End
production, featuring English National Opera's award-winning Orchestra and Chorus, will be directed by
Laurence Connor, whose recent credits include School of Rock and Miss Saigon on Broadway and in the
West End, Les Miserable’s on Broadway, and the international Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour. The
choreography is by Stephen Mear.

It is the first West End revival since it was initially produced in the 1986 edition. The original version
starred Murray Head, Elaine Paige, and Tommy Korberg. The product ran for around three years at the
poplar Prince Edward Theatre. It also followed a highly successful recording while it featured the same
stars and included the International hit singles.
This new West End Production will feature English National Opera’s award-winning chorus and orchestra
and is directed by Laurence Connor. The return of this sensational score on the London Stage is not just
essential but also an exciting musical theatre prospect.
