Presentation given by Vince Hardt of the Fox Valley Citizens for Peace & Justice at the Green Buddha Sustainability Center's grand opening on June 5, 2014.

center, truck, gas pump.
21. How would ending wars affect the
climate?
How would using alternative energy
affect our drive to war?
How can we change our lives to use
less total energy?
[Pay attention to directions in the curly braces {} and DO NOT SPEAK THEM]
{With enthusiasm} Good afternoon everyone! I am _________ {DO NOT SAY “My name is” that’s stupid}. I am from a community advocacy group, Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice.
{Ask} Does anyone know what a community advocacy group does?
{Call on anyone who raises a hand. If no one raises a hand DO NOT CALL ON ANYONE! }
{If answer is close or correct} Very good! Yes, a community advocacy group helps to bring attention to issues and concerns that it feels are important.
{If the answer is wrong or not as expected, segue} Good but not quite. A community advocacy group helps to bring attention to issues and concerns that it feels are important.
{Continue} We, of the Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice, want to bring attention to the United States’ involvement in the wars around the world

{ASK} Can someone briefly describe what Global Climate change is?
{Click to display chart}
{Because this is an environmental group, whatever they say is okay}
{Click to hide chart}
{ASK} Can you name some of the causes of global climate change?
{ After they have answered: Click start images
Industrialization
Slash and burn agriculture
Motorized transportation
Industrialized agriculture
Humans}
{Click}
And, of course, wars.
{click}
{ASK} So, besides the human misery that wars cause in not only physical suffering but also the squandering of a country’s wealth and natural resources,
{click}
Wars also contribute to the crisis of Global Climate Change .
{ASK} How do we measure the climate change effects of any activity?
Let’s take a look at What a Metric Ton of CO2 Looks Like If you were to build a cube to represent one metric ton of CO2, or carbon dioxide, it would measure 27 feet high by 27 feet deep.
{CLICK}
When filled with carbon dioxide, it would weigh 2,204 pounds,
{CLICK}
the same weight as 264 gallons of water.
{CLICK}
{ASK} Who can tell me what the leading producer of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is?
{CLICK}
{Say} Yes, the burning of fossil fuels by humans is the leading cause rising levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
{Slides display while you say this
{CLICK}
{Say} As you probably know, the united states is the leading global consumer of fossil fuels.
{CLICK} We, as a nation, import from foreign countries 57 percent of our oil. That is 11 million barrels or 462 million gallons of oil. A DAY!
{CLICK} Of this imported oil, almost 2 million barrels come from the Persian Gulf.
{CLICK} Now, other oil fields becoming depleted, only Middle East and Central Asia are believed to have easily-accessible untapped reserves.
{CLICK}
{SAY} Here’s what is publicly available about the U.S. military’s use of fissile fuels:
{CLICK} 61.7 MILLION metric tonnes of petroleum 194.47 MMt of CO2
{CLICK} 18.9 MILLION metric tonnes of natural gas
{CLICK} and 4.7 MILLION metric tonnes of other petroleum-based fuels.
0.43 metric tons CO2/barrel
7.33 bbl per Mt
{Ask} Where does this imported oil come from?
{CLICK} Mostly the middle east.
{CLICK} Here’s a closer look at the oil routes in the Persian Gulf.

{Say} How much fossil fuel is used to fight wars?
{Discuss} Images display
We expend fossil fuels transporting troops, equipment and oil to, around, and from each battlefield, protected area, and security zone to the tune of 27 MMt of petroleum a year used just to protect our sources of oil.
{Ask} Does anyone know what irony is?
