2. In in focus group I asked 3 of my classmates
to answer a few questions. Here they are:
Garmen Petra Shabana
3. What I did:
I showed my focus group 3 magazine front covers and then
asked them, what magazine are you most drawn to?
4. Here were their answers:
“ I like the billboard one the most because I
like Justin Bieber. I love his music and his style
and that’s what draws me to the magazine,
the fact that he is on the cover. Also I love the
blue background. It is different and more
special than a white background and makes it
more eye catching. Lastly, I like how there isn’t
to much going on, on the front of the
magazine and how bold the masthead is. ” -
Petra
“ I like this one the most because I
like how Justin Bieber is standing
and I love this median-close up shot
of him. The fact that the angle of
gaze is at the camera is good as it
draws me in. It is very simple and
neat as well compared to the
others” - Garmen
5. “This one is my favourite
as I love the photo. I think
a lot of work has gone into
making this image and I
like how it is different to a
standard close up of an
artists face. Also there is
no writing around the
image which I prefer. The
colours, pink and blue,
really attracted me as it
grabs your attention. Lastly
I know the artist and the
fact that her name is one
the front is another selling
point.”-Shabana
6. Next question was:
What works well and what would you change on
your preferred magazine?
“ I think the long shot works well with this
magazine instead of an average close up. It makes
it more edgy, gives you more to look at and the
costumes and motorbike add to that whole vibe.
Along with that is the colours. They are bold and
vibrant which makes it hard to take your eyes off.
If I was to change anything it would be change the
issue number. Even though it is creative and
unique it is hard to read. I wouldn’t remove it as it
would make it look too empty but would just
replace it will neater text or just something else.”-
Shabana
7. “I think the colour
scheme is what works
well. The blue and
orange work well
together. Also his facial
expression is very
relaxed and natural
which gives it an
effortless touch. What I
would change is the
size of the text. I think
it is just a bit too small
to read so to improve
it, I would make it
bigger. “-Petra
“ What works with this
magazine is the
minimal text. Its clean
and simplistic but at
the same time gives all
the information you
need. The only
negative I can say is
that he looks too
photo shopped that
his upper arm merges
into his body. If it
wasn’t edited to much
I would love it
completely.” - Garmen
8. Next question:
By looking at
the magazine,
what do age
range do you
think they are
aiming at?
• 16+ Petra
• 16+ Garmen
• 18+ Shabana
• 18+ Petra
• 16+ Garmen
• 16+ Shabana
• 15+ Petra
• 16+ Garmen
• 17+ Shabana
“ I think that 18 is a
suitable age as Rolling
Stones tends to use a lot of
sex appeal on the front of
their magazine”- Shabana
“ 16 is a good age at there
isn’t anything too
inappropriate but at the
same time not everything
is PG.”- Garmen
“ The best age is 15
because Billboard is more
age friendly and has a
slightly youthful feel.”-
Petra
9. Last Question: Is there anything you would
like to see on my magazine?
“ As long as you have a good colour scheme, I think the general
appearance of your magazine will look good. Also use white instead
of black as a feature colour as it looks better.” - Petra
“One piece of advice would be to
keep it as simplistic as possible
but at the same time have some
cover lines that add value.” -
Shabana
“I would say to make sure your
model’s angle of gaze is at the
camera and that you have at
least a mid shot to add more
detail.”- Garmen
