Starry Night by
Vincent van
Gogh, 1889
Vincent van Gogh did not
cut off his ear. He only cut
off a small portion of his
ear lobe. Van Gogh
created his most famous
work The Starry Night
while staying in an asylum
in Saint- Remy-de-
Provence, France.

sky, three paths going
in different directions,
and black crows, a sign
of an impending end.
This is one of the
artist's last works.

Vincent commits suicide
27 July 1890
On that Sunday evening
Vincent van Gogh set
out, with his easel and
painting materials, into
the fields.
There he took out e
revolver and shot
himself in the chest.
He died two days later.
He suffered from
depression, and it is
suspected that it was a
cry for help/attention
rather than a genuine
suicide attempt.
He was only 37
years old.
