1. How to Start a Podcast

2. Why Podcast?
There’s a large broad
audience, and they
have high levels of
income and
education.
● A 2020 survey found that 49% of 12-to-32-
year-olds in the U.S. had listened to a
podcast within the last month, with an
average of six listening hours a week.
● A 2021 study shows that US weekly podcast
listeners average eight podcasts. Podcast
listeners are 68% more likely to be
postgraduates. Of the 41% of respondents
that reported their income level, the majority
of them have a household income level of
$100k-$150k.
3. Podcast Feed
Platforms:
Like a blog, a podcast
uses an RSS feed. You
can host your own, or
use a paid service.
A paid service will charge you a small monthly fee
for storage and distribution of your podcast
content. You’ll just upload your audio files to your
feed platform. Then you’ll submit your feed to a
podcast directory.
Some popular choices for podcasts feeds are:
Trint
Megaphone
Podbean
Buzzsprout
SoundCloud
Transistor
4. Basic Recording
Setup:
You need less specialized gear
than you might think. A simple
laptop or desktop computer with a
built in or external microphone
and some free apps will do. In a
pinch, you can create and publish
a podcast with just a smart
phone.
Here’s are some recommendations from Trint:
1) Microphone: You can use your phone or
laptop mic, ear buds with a built in mic, a
USB headset, get a budget mic on Amazon
for less than $100, or a higher quality
microphone for around $200.
1) Software: almost any audio recording
software will work. Some recommended free
options are Garage Band, QuickTime and
Audacity. Paid Zoom is a good option if
you’re going to be doing interviews with
guests.
5. Editing:
You can edit in the
same software you
use to record, or
upload your raw audio
to edit in another
program for more
advanced editing
options.
GarageBand and Audacity will let you record
and edit your audio all in one place for free.
This is a good place to start.
If you need more professional editing tools,
ProTools is the industry standard.
Some tips for simple editing:
● Plan ahead to get a rough cut close to
what you want
● Listen to your audio and take notes of
edits with timestamps
● Listen to other podcasts in your space to
help pick your theme music
● Use sound effects sparingly
6. Publishing
Two Simple Steps:
1) Upload your final podcast to your RSS feed or
service.
2) Add tags, images and descriptions.
Your feed will by linked to whichever directories you
have selected, so once you publish to your feed, you
new episode will appear in these directories.
Tip: Apple Podcasts requires a logo/cover image that
is at least. 1400 x 1400 pixels and a maximum size of
3000 x 3000 pixels. Canva has templates to create
these.
