- Hi, I’m Molly Sauter. I’m a PhD candidate at McGill University in Montreal. I care about the political philosophy of technology, particularly when it comes to “disruptive” politics, otherwise known as “fucking shit up online” (that’s a technical term). A few years ago I wrote this book, on the use of distributed denial of service actions as a tool of activism. This is based on work I did at the MIT Media Lab. I’m currently at work on my second book, aka my dissertation, developing a novel theory of political disruption as it occurs within networked communication technologies.
- This talk is on the Internet of Things, the promises and risks thereof. Some of them will be things you’ve heard of, some of them may be angles you haven’t considered before.
- Let’s talk about NEST. We could talk about a lot of things with NEST, but let’s talk about three things in particular: -dysfunction -liability -security flaws ok, so, early adopter pains. and it’s just a thermostat, so really whatever right?

Samsung Family Hub network of products includes sleep monitoring technology, networked lights and window blinds, automated front door locks, cameras on literally every surface that will support one (including inside your fridge) -privacy *disaster* -security *disaster* -safety *disaster* these aren’t “smart devices”. These are *vectors*. Each new smart device is a new point of compromise Remember: each of these devices is a tiny computer.
- DYN DNS OUTAGE Investigation of the attack uncovered 49,657 unique IPs which hosted Mirai-infected devices. As previously reported, these were mostly CCTV cameras—a popular choice of DDoS botnet herders. Other victimized devices included DVRs and routers.
