• Anger is amongst the innate properties of a living beings.
• Even though it is a quality we naturally possess, our training needs to be in a
way that it needs to be checked and channelized for our well being.
• This is very important in context of our own health and inter-personal
relations.

Absence of Attachment, Fear and
Anger Needed for Stable Mind
दुुःखेषु्‌अनुद्ववग्न-मनाुः, सुखेषु्‌ववगत-स्पृहुः्‌।
वीत-राग-भय-क्रोधुः, स्स्ितधीुः्‌मुननुः उच्यते्‌॥२-५६॥
दुुःखों की्‌प्रास्तत्‌होने पर्‌स्िसक
े ्‌मन में्‌उद्वेग्‌नह ीं्‌होता्‌और्‌सुखों की्‌प्रास्तत्‌
होने पर्‌स्िसक
े ्‌मन में्‌स्पृहा्‌नह ीं्‌होती्‌तिा्‌िो्‌राग, भय्‌और्‌क्रोध से्‌सवविा्‌
रहहत्‌हो्‌गया्‌है, वह्‌मननशील्‌मनुष्य्‌स्स्िरबुद्धध्‌कहा्‌िाता्‌है।
He whose mind is not shaken by adversity, who does not hanker after
pleasures, and is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage
of steady wisdom.

Worldly Objects – Attachment – Desire - Anger
ध्यायतुः्‌ववषयान््‌पुींसुः्‌सङ्गुः्‌तेषु्‌उपिायते्‌।
सङ्गात ््‌सञ्िायते्‌कामुः्‌कामात ््‌क्रोधुः्‌अभभिायते्‌॥्‌२-६२॥
ववषयों का्‌धिन्तन्‌करने वाले्‌मनुष्य की्‌उन्‌ववषयों में्‌आसस्तत्‌पैदा्‌हो्‌
िाती्‌है।्‌आसस्तत से्‌कामना्‌पैदा्‌होती्‌है।्‌कामना से्‌क्रोध्‌पैदा्‌होता्‌है।
When a man thinks of the objects, attachment for them arises;
from attachment desire is born; from desire anger arises.

Anger – Delusion - Memory Loss - Destruction of
Discrimination - Downfall
क्रोधात््‌भवनत्‌सम्मोहुः्‌सम्मोहात््‌स्मृनत-ववभ्रममुः्‌।
स्मृनत-भ्रमींशात््‌बुद्धध-नाशुः्‌बुद्धध-नाशात््‌प्रश्यनत्‌॥्‌२-६३॥
क्रोध्‌होने पर्‌सम्मोह्‌(मूढ़भाव) हो्‌िाता्‌है।्‌सम्मोह से्‌स्मृनत्‌भ्रमष्ट्‌हो्‌
िाती्‌है।्‌स्मृनत्‌भ्रमष्ट्‌होने पर्‌बुद्धध का्‌नाश्‌हो्‌िाता्‌है।्‌बुद्धध का्‌नाश्‌
होने पर्‌मनुष्य का्‌पतन्‌हो्‌िाता्‌है।
From anger comes delusion; from delusion loss of memory;
from loss of memory the destruction of discrimination; from
the destruction of discrimination he perishes.

Desire is Anger, Born of Rajas, Is the Enemy
कामुः्‌एषुः्‌क्रोधुः्‌एषुः्‌रिुः्‌गुश-समुद्भवुः्‌।
महा-अशनुः्‌महा-पातमा्‌ववद्धध्‌एनम््‌इह्‌वैररशम््‌॥्‌३-३७॥
श्रीभगवान््‌बोले्‌– रिोगुश्‌से्‌उत्पन्न्‌हुआ यह्‌काम्‌ह ्‌क्रोध है।्‌यह्‌
बहुत्‌खाने्‌वाला्‌और्‌महा्‌पापी्‌है।्‌इस्‌ववषय्‌में्‌तू्‌इसको्‌ह ्‌वैर ्‌िान।
The Blessed Lord said It is desire, it is anger both of the ality
of Rajas, all-devouring, all-sinful; know this as the foe here (in
this world).

Leaving Attachment, Fear, Anger Required to Attain
the Supreme
वीत-राग-भय-क्रोधाुः्‌मन्मयाुः्‌माम््‌उपाधश्रताुः्‌।
बहवुः्‌ज्ञान-तपसा्‌पूताुः्‌मद्भावम््‌आगताुः्‌॥्‌४-१०॥
राग, भय्‌और्‌क्रोध से्‌सवविा्‌रहहत, मेरे में्‌ह ्‌तल्ल न, मेरे्‌ह ्‌आधश्रत्‌
तिा्‌ज्ञानरूप्‌तप से्‌पववत्र्‌हुए्‌बहुत-से्‌भतत्‌मेरे्‌भाव- (स्वरूप-) को्‌प्रातत्‌
हो्‌िुक
े ्‌हैं।
Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in Me, taking
refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have
attained to My Being.

Happiness Related to Withstanding Desire and Anger
शतनोनत्‌इह्‌एव्‌युः्‌सोढुम््‌प्राक््‌शर र-ववमोक्षशात््‌।
काम-क्रोध-उद्भवम ््‌वेगम ््‌सुः्‌युततुः्‌सुः्‌सुखी्‌नरुः ॥्‌५-२३॥
इस्‌मनुष्य-शर र में्‌िो्‌कोई्‌(मनुष्य) शर र्‌छ
ू टने से्‌पहले्‌ह काम-क्रोध से्‌
उत्पन्न्‌होने वाले्‌वेग को्‌सहन्‌करने में्‌समिव्‌होता्‌है, वह्‌नर्‌योगी्‌है्‌
और्‌वह ्‌सुखी्‌है।
He who is able, while still here (in this world) to withstand,
before the liberation from the body, the impulse born out of
desire and anger he is a Yogi, he is a happy man.

Winning Over Desire and Anger
Required for Self Realisation
काम-क्रोध-ववयुततानाम््‌यतीनाम््‌यत-िेतसाम््‌।
अभभतुः्‌ब्रह्म-ननवावशीं्‌वतवते्‌ववहदत-आत्मनाम््‌॥्‌५-२६॥
काम-क्रोध से्‌सवविा्‌रहहत, िीते्‌हुए्‌मन वाले्‌और्‌स्वरूप का साक्षात्कार्‌
ककये्‌हुए्‌साींख्ययोधगयों क
े ्‌भलये्‌दोनों्‌ओर से—शर र क
े ्‌रहते्‌हुए्‌अिवा्‌
शर र्‌छ
ू टने क
े ्‌बाद) ननवावश्‌ब्रह्म्‌पररपूशव्‌है।
Absolute freedom (or Brahmic bliss) exists on all sides for those self-
controlled ascetics who are free from desire and anger, who have
controlled their thoughts and who have realised the Self.

Freeness from Desire, Fear and Anger
is Path to Liberation
यत-इस्न्िय-मनुः्‌बुद्धधुः्‌मुननुः्‌मोक्ष-परायशुः्‌।
ववगत-इच्छा-भय-क्रोधुः्‌युः्‌सदा्‌मुततुः्‌एव्‌सुः्‌॥ ५-२८॥
स्िसकी्‌इस्न्ियााँ, मन्‌और्‌बुद्धध्‌अपने्‌वश में्‌हैं, िो्‌मोक्ष-परायश्‌है्‌तिा्‌
िो्‌इच्छा, भय्‌और्‌क्रोध से्‌सवविा्‌रहहत्‌है, वह्‌मुनन्‌सदा्‌मुतत्‌ह ्‌है।
With the senses, the mind and the intellect (ever) controlled,
having liberation as his supreme goal, free from desire, fear and
anger the sage is verily liberated for ever.

Properties to Reach Divine State
अहहींसा्‌सत्यम््‌अक्रोधुः्‌त्यागुः्‌शास्न्तुः्‌अपैशुनम््‌।
दया्‌भूतेषु्‌अलोलुतत्वम््‌मादववम््‌ह् ुः्‌अिापलम््‌॥्‌१६-२॥
अहहींसा, सत्यभाषश; क्रोध्‌न्‌करना; सींसार की्‌कामना का्‌त्याग; अन्तुःकरश में्‌राग-
द्वेषिननत्‌हलिल का्‌न्‌होना; िुगल ्‌न्‌करना; प्राणशयों पर्‌दया्‌करना्‌साींसाररक्‌ववषयों
में्‌न्‌ललिाना; अन्तुःकरश की्‌कोमलता; अकतवव्य्‌करने में्‌लज्िा; िपलता का्‌अभाव।
Harmlessness, truth, absence of anger, renunciation, peacefulness,
absence of crookedness, compassion towards beings, non-
covetousness, gentleness, modesty, absence of fickleness

Properties to Reach Demonic State
दम्भुः्‌दपवुः्‌अभभमानुः्‌ि्‌क्रोधुः्‌पारुष्यम््‌एव्‌ि्‌।
अज्ञानम््‌ि्‌अभभिातस्य्‌पािव्‌सम्पदम््‌आसुर म््‌॥्‌१६-४॥
हे्‌पृिानन्दन्‌! दम्भ्‌करना, घमण्ड्‌करना, अभभमान्‌करना, क्रोध्‌करना,
कठोरता्‌रखना्‌और्‌अवववेक का्‌होना्‌भी्‌-- ये्‌सभी्‌आसुर सम्पदा को्‌
प्रातत्‌हुए्‌मनुष्य क
े ्‌लक्षश्‌हैं।
Hypocrisy, arrogance and self-conceit, anger and also harshness
and ignorance, belong to one who is born for a demoniacal
state, O Partha (Arjuna).

Desire, Anger Related to Unlawful Wealth Creation
आशा-पाश-शतैुः्‌बद्धाुः्‌काम-क्रोध-परायशाुः्‌।
ईहन्ते्‌काम-भोगािवम््‌अन्यायेन्‌अिव-सञ्ियान््‌॥्‌१६-१२॥
वे्‌आशा की्‌सैकडों्‌फााँभसयों से्‌बाँधे्‌हुए (आसुर ्‌प्रकृ नत वाले) मनुष्य्‌काम-
क्रोध क
े ्‌परायश्‌होकर्‌पदािों का्‌भोग्‌करने क
े ्‌भलये्‌अन्यायपूववक्‌धन-
सींिय्‌करने की्‌िेष्टा्‌करते्‌रहते्‌हैं।
Bound by a hundred ties of hope, given over to lust and anger,
they (Demonic Nature People) strive to obtain by unlawful
means hoards to wealth for sensual enjoyments.

Negative Minded People do not
Tolerate Existence of Supreme
अहींकारम््‌बलम््‌दपवम््‌कामम््‌क्रोधम््‌ि्‌सींधश्रताुः्‌।
माम््‌आत्म-पर-देहेषु्‌प्रद्ववषन्तुः्‌अभ्यसूयकाुः्‌॥्‌१६-१८॥
वे्‌अहङ्कार, हठ, घमण्ड, कामना्‌और्‌क्रोध का्‌आश्रय्‌लेनेवाले्‌मनुष्य्‌
अपने्‌और्‌दूसरों क
े ्‌शर र में्‌रहनेवाले्‌मुझ्‌अन्तयावमी क
े ्‌साि्‌द्वेष्‌करते्‌
हैं्‌तिा्‌(मेरे्‌और्‌दूसरों क
े ्‌गुशों में) दोष-दृस्ष्ट्‌रखते्‌हैं।
Given over to egoism, power, haughtiness, lust and anger, these
malicious people hate Me in their own bodies and in those of
others.

Desire, Anger, Greed Leads to Hell
त्रत्रववधम््‌नरकस्य्‌इदम््‌द्वारम््‌नाशनम््‌आत्मनुः्‌।
कामुः्‌क्रोधुः्‌तिा्‌लोभुः्‌तस्मात ््‌एतत ््‌त्रयम््‌त्यिेत ््‌॥्‌१६-२१॥
काम, क्रोध्‌और्‌लोभ्‌-- ये्‌तीन्‌प्रकार क
े ्‌नरक क
े ्‌दरवािे िीवात्मा
का्‌पतन्‌करने वाले्‌हैं, इसभलये्‌इन्‌तीनों का्‌त्याग्‌कर्‌देना्‌िाहहये।
Triple is the gate of this hell, destructive of the self lust,
anger and greed; therefore one should abandon these three.

Properties of a Person Fit to Attain the Supreme
अहींकारम््‌बलम््‌दपवम््‌कामम््‌क्रोधम््‌पररग्रहम््‌।
ववमुच्य्‌ननमवमुः्‌शान्तुः्‌ब्रह्म-भूयाय्‌कल्पते्‌॥्‌१८-५३॥
िो्‌ववशुद्ध्‌(सास्ववकी) बुद्धध से्‌युतत, वैराग्य क
े ्‌आधश्रत, एकान्त का्‌सेवन्‌करने वाला्‌और्‌ननयभमत्‌भोिन्‌करने वाला्‌
साधक्‌धैयवपूववक्‌इस्न्ियों का्‌ननयमन्‌करक
े , शर र-वाशी-मन को्‌वशमें्‌करक
े , शब्दाहद्‌ववषयों का त्याग्‌करक
े ्‌और्‌राग-
द्वेष को्‌छोडकर्‌ननरन्तर्‌ध्यान योग क
े ्‌परायश्‌हो्‌िाता्‌है, वह्‌अहींकार, बल, दपव, काम, क्रोध्‌और पररग्रहका्‌त्याग्‌
करक
े ्‌एवीं्‌ननमवम्‌तिा्‌शान्त्‌होकर्‌ब्रह्म प्रास्तत का्‌पात्र्‌हो्‌िाता्‌है।
Having abandoned egoism, strength, arrogance, desire, anger
and covetousness, and free from the notion of 'mine' and
peaceful, he is fit for becoming Brahman.

Desire is Anger, Born of Rajas, Is the Enemy कामुः्‌एषुः्‌क्रोधुः्‌एषुः्‌रिुः्‌गुश-समुद्भवुः्‌। महा-अशनुः्‌महा-पातमा्‌ववद्धध्‌एनम््‌इह्‌वैररशम््‌॥्‌३-३७॥ श्रीभगवान््‌बोले्‌– रिोगुश्‌से्‌उत्पन्न्‌हुआ यह्‌काम्‌ह ्‌क्रोध है।्‌यह्‌ बहुत्‌खाने्‌वाला्‌और्‌महा्‌पापी्‌है।्‌इस्‌ववषय्‌में्‌तू्‌इसको्‌ह ्‌वैर ्‌िान। The Blessed Lord said It is desire, it is anger both of the ality of Rajas, all-devouring, all-sinful; know this as the foe here (in this world). 8

Leaving Attachment, Fear, Anger Required to Attain the Supreme वीत-राग-भय-क्रोधाुः्‌मन्मयाुः्‌माम््‌उपाधश्रताुः्‌। बहवुः्‌ज्ञान-तपसा्‌पूताुः्‌मद्भावम््‌आगताुः्‌॥्‌४-१०॥ राग, भय्‌और्‌क्रोध से्‌सवविा्‌रहहत, मेरे में्‌ह ्‌तल्ल न, मेरे्‌ह ्‌आधश्रत्‌ तिा्‌ज्ञानरूप्‌तप से्‌पववत्र्‌हुए्‌बहुत-से्‌भतत्‌मेरे्‌भाव- (स्वरूप-) को्‌प्रातत्‌ हो्‌िुक े ्‌हैं। Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have attained to My Being. 9

Happiness Related to Withstanding Desire and Anger शतनोनत्‌इह्‌एव्‌युः्‌सोढुम््‌प्राक््‌शर र-ववमोक्षशात््‌। काम-क्रोध-उद्भवम ््‌वेगम ््‌सुः्‌युततुः्‌सुः्‌सुखी्‌नरुः ॥्‌५-२३॥ इस्‌मनुष्य-शर र में्‌िो्‌कोई्‌(मनुष्य) शर र्‌छ ू टने से्‌पहले्‌ह काम-क्रोध से्‌ उत्पन्न्‌होने वाले्‌वेग को्‌सहन्‌करने में्‌समिव्‌होता्‌है, वह्‌नर्‌योगी्‌है्‌ और्‌वह ्‌सुखी्‌है। He who is able, while still here (in this world) to withstand, before the liberation from the body, the impulse born out of desire and anger he is a Yogi, he is a happy man. 10

Winning Over Desire and Anger Required for Self Realisation काम-क्रोध-ववयुततानाम््‌यतीनाम््‌यत-िेतसाम््‌। अभभतुः्‌ब्रह्म-ननवावशीं्‌वतवते्‌ववहदत-आत्मनाम््‌॥्‌५-२६॥ काम-क्रोध से्‌सवविा्‌रहहत, िीते्‌हुए्‌मन वाले्‌और्‌स्वरूप का साक्षात्कार्‌ ककये्‌हुए्‌साींख्ययोधगयों क े ्‌भलये्‌दोनों्‌ओर से—शर र क े ्‌रहते्‌हुए्‌अिवा्‌ शर र्‌छ ू टने क े ्‌बाद) ननवावश्‌ब्रह्म्‌पररपूशव्‌है। Absolute freedom (or Brahmic bliss) exists on all sides for those self- controlled ascetics who are free from desire and anger, who have controlled their thoughts and who have realised the Self. 11

Freeness from Desire, Fear and Anger is Path to Liberation यत-इस्न्िय-मनुः्‌बुद्धधुः्‌मुननुः्‌मोक्ष-परायशुः्‌। ववगत-इच्छा-भय-क्रोधुः्‌युः्‌सदा्‌मुततुः्‌एव्‌सुः्‌॥ ५-२८॥ स्िसकी्‌इस्न्ियााँ, मन्‌और्‌बुद्धध्‌अपने्‌वश में्‌हैं, िो्‌मोक्ष-परायश्‌है्‌तिा्‌ िो्‌इच्छा, भय्‌और्‌क्रोध से्‌सवविा्‌रहहत्‌है, वह्‌मुनन्‌सदा्‌मुतत्‌ह ्‌है। With the senses, the mind and the intellect (ever) controlled, having liberation as his supreme goal, free from desire, fear and anger the sage is verily liberated for ever. 12

Properties to Reach Divine State अहहींसा्‌सत्यम््‌अक्रोधुः्‌त्यागुः्‌शास्न्तुः्‌अपैशुनम््‌। दया्‌भूतेषु्‌अलोलुतत्वम््‌मादववम््‌ह् ुः्‌अिापलम््‌॥्‌१६-२॥ अहहींसा, सत्यभाषश; क्रोध्‌न्‌करना; सींसार की्‌कामना का्‌त्याग; अन्तुःकरश में्‌राग- द्वेषिननत्‌हलिल का्‌न्‌होना; िुगल ्‌न्‌करना; प्राणशयों पर्‌दया्‌करना्‌साींसाररक्‌ववषयों में्‌न्‌ललिाना; अन्तुःकरश की्‌कोमलता; अकतवव्य्‌करने में्‌लज्िा; िपलता का्‌अभाव। Harmlessness, truth, absence of anger, renunciation, peacefulness, absence of crookedness, compassion towards beings, non- covetousness, gentleness, modesty, absence of fickleness 13

Properties to Reach Demonic State दम्भुः्‌दपवुः्‌अभभमानुः्‌ि्‌क्रोधुः्‌पारुष्यम््‌एव्‌ि्‌। अज्ञानम््‌ि्‌अभभिातस्य्‌पािव्‌सम्पदम््‌आसुर म््‌॥्‌१६-४॥ हे्‌पृिानन्दन्‌! दम्भ्‌करना, घमण्ड्‌करना, अभभमान्‌करना, क्रोध्‌करना, कठोरता्‌रखना्‌और्‌अवववेक का्‌होना्‌भी्‌-- ये्‌सभी्‌आसुर सम्पदा को्‌ प्रातत्‌हुए्‌मनुष्य क े ्‌लक्षश्‌हैं। Hypocrisy, arrogance and self-conceit, anger and also harshness and ignorance, belong to one who is born for a demoniacal state, O Partha (Arjuna). 14

Desire, Anger Related to Unlawful Wealth Creation आशा-पाश-शतैुः्‌बद्धाुः्‌काम-क्रोध-परायशाुः्‌। ईहन्ते्‌काम-भोगािवम््‌अन्यायेन्‌अिव-सञ्ियान््‌॥्‌१६-१२॥ वे्‌आशा की्‌सैकडों्‌फााँभसयों से्‌बाँधे्‌हुए (आसुर ्‌प्रकृ नत वाले) मनुष्य्‌काम- क्रोध क े ्‌परायश्‌होकर्‌पदािों का्‌भोग्‌करने क े ्‌भलये्‌अन्यायपूववक्‌धन- सींिय्‌करने की्‌िेष्टा्‌करते्‌रहते्‌हैं। Bound by a hundred ties of hope, given over to lust and anger, they (Demonic Nature People) strive to obtain by unlawful means hoards to wealth for sensual enjoyments. 15

Negative Minded People do not Tolerate Existence of Supreme अहींकारम््‌बलम््‌दपवम््‌कामम््‌क्रोधम््‌ि्‌सींधश्रताुः्‌। माम््‌आत्म-पर-देहेषु्‌प्रद्ववषन्तुः्‌अभ्यसूयकाुः्‌॥्‌१६-१८॥ वे्‌अहङ्कार, हठ, घमण्ड, कामना्‌और्‌क्रोध का्‌आश्रय्‌लेनेवाले्‌मनुष्य्‌ अपने्‌और्‌दूसरों क े ्‌शर र में्‌रहनेवाले्‌मुझ्‌अन्तयावमी क े ्‌साि्‌द्वेष्‌करते्‌ हैं्‌तिा्‌(मेरे्‌और्‌दूसरों क े ्‌गुशों में) दोष-दृस्ष्ट्‌रखते्‌हैं। Given over to egoism, power, haughtiness, lust and anger, these malicious people hate Me in their own bodies and in those of others. 16

Desire, Anger, Greed Leads to Hell त्रत्रववधम््‌नरकस्य्‌इदम््‌द्वारम््‌नाशनम््‌आत्मनुः्‌। कामुः्‌क्रोधुः्‌तिा्‌लोभुः्‌तस्मात ््‌एतत ््‌त्रयम््‌त्यिेत ््‌॥्‌१६-२१॥ काम, क्रोध्‌और्‌लोभ्‌-- ये्‌तीन्‌प्रकार क े ्‌नरक क े ्‌दरवािे िीवात्मा का्‌पतन्‌करने वाले्‌हैं, इसभलये्‌इन्‌तीनों का्‌त्याग्‌कर्‌देना्‌िाहहये। Triple is the gate of this hell, destructive of the self lust, anger and greed; therefore one should abandon these three. 17

Properties of a Person Fit to Attain the Supreme अहींकारम््‌बलम््‌दपवम््‌कामम््‌क्रोधम््‌पररग्रहम््‌। ववमुच्य्‌ननमवमुः्‌शान्तुः्‌ब्रह्म-भूयाय्‌कल्पते्‌॥्‌१८-५३॥ िो्‌ववशुद्ध्‌(सास्ववकी) बुद्धध से्‌युतत, वैराग्य क े ्‌आधश्रत, एकान्त का्‌सेवन्‌करने वाला्‌और्‌ननयभमत्‌भोिन्‌करने वाला्‌ साधक्‌धैयवपूववक्‌इस्न्ियों का्‌ननयमन्‌करक े , शर र-वाशी-मन को्‌वशमें्‌करक े , शब्दाहद्‌ववषयों का त्याग्‌करक े ्‌और्‌राग- द्वेष को्‌छोडकर्‌ननरन्तर्‌ध्यान योग क े ्‌परायश्‌हो्‌िाता्‌है, वह्‌अहींकार, बल, दपव, काम, क्रोध्‌और पररग्रहका्‌त्याग्‌ करक े ्‌एवीं्‌ननमवम्‌तिा्‌शान्त्‌होकर्‌ब्रह्म प्रास्तत का्‌पात्र्‌हो्‌िाता्‌है। Having abandoned egoism, strength, arrogance, desire, anger and covetousness, and free from the notion of 'mine' and peaceful, he is fit for becoming Brahman. 18
