SELF AWARENESS
• Self-awareness is the meta-skill of the 21st century:

The more people become aware of their mindsets and behaviors, the more they can
avoid harmful habits such as dominating conversations, not paying attention to
others, being arrogant or trying to impose their points of view.
Self-awareness has a more positive impact on leadership than an MBA. The findings
show that self-awareness encourages us to lead ourselves with authenticity and
integrity—and in turn better lead others.
Sun Tzu said: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result
of a hundred battles.”

The American Airlines declared just 1 plane accident in each 4 million flight btw 1998
and 1999 while Korean Airlines was 6.
Gladwell’s hypothesis about the reason of this situation is the Korean cultural heritage.
Each individual has his/her own personality but the society which they are raised has a
big impact on their behaviours.
The Dutch Psychologist Geert Hofstede investigated about the cultures respect for
authority or not.
They saw that, many Co-Pilots would not tell about the break downs or any problems to
the Pilot because of they are so shy.
Then they first changed the main language into English in the cockpit that they can tell
the problems to the pilots comfortably.
With these, Korean Air managed the handling of the norms of the respect culture did
not have any accident since 1999.

• One Person is ineffective and dangerous
• We don’t need heroes!!!!
• We need radical interdependence; we need each other.
• Traditional Heroic Leaders give specific individually
reachable targets such as market share, revenue etc,.
But the cooperative & interdependent leaders give
some targets which can’t be reached individually.

team.
