2. San Francisco was founded in June 29, 1776, by José
Joaquin Moraga and Francisco Palóu.
The earliest archaeological evidence of human
habitation of the territory of the city of San Francisco
dates to 3000 BC.
The Yelamu group of the Ohlone people resided in a
few small villages when an overland Spanish

on November 2, 1769, the first documented European
visit to San Francisco Bay.

offshore from San Francisco, California, United
States. Often referred to as "The Rock", the small island
was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military
fortification, a military prison in 1868, and a federal
prison from 1933 until 1963. Beginning in November 1969,
the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a
group of aboriginal people from San Francisco who were
part of a wave of Native activism across the nation with
public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz
became a national recreation area and received
designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
4. Washington Square Park is one of the best-known of New
York City's 1,900 public parks. At 9.75 acres (39,500 m2), it is
a landmark in the Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich
Village, as well as a meeting place and center for cultural
activity. It is operated by the New York City Department of
Parks and Recreation.
The Park is an open space, dominated byWashington
Arch (1892), with a tradition of celebrating nonconformity.
The Park's fountain area has long been one of the city's
popular spots for residents and tourists. Most of the
buildings surrounding the park now belong to New York
University, but many have at one time served as homes and
studios for artists. Some of the buildings have been built by
NYU, others have been converted from their former uses into
academic and residential buildings
