1. Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea)
● Lingonberries are eatable and it
keeps the leaves in the wintertime.
Lingonberryplants are rarely
cultivated, but berries are often
picked from wild plants.
● They reach 10-40 cm height with
compact growth habit, they thrive in
partial shade and acidic, moist soil
● Lingonberry tolerate cold very well,
they can withstand -40 degrees and
possibly lower but grow poorly when
summers are warm, they have
leaves years on even the coldest
winters
● They spread underground roots in
summer. Plants white flowers and
fruit ripens in the fall. (AUG-SEP)
2. Moose (alecs alces)
● The Finnish name of moose is älg and
it is Finlands biggest mammal. It is
black- brown the hole year and the
male has horn, and it sheds every
single winter. The female doesn't
have horn.
● It lives in the hole country. In the
summer the moose lives in deciduocs
forests and in the bog.
● This animal eats birch, blueberrys
and other springs.
● On the spring the female give birth to
1-2 red-brown calfs. The female
suckle her calf the hole summer time.
The calf follows it's mother one year.
● The moose hunt starts in Finland the
29.9-31.12. About 50000 mooses are
broughted down every year.
3. Wolf (Canis lupus)
The wolf is the largest member of the
canine family. Gray wolves range in
color from gray and black to all-white.
The wolf's body has a length of 90-140
cm. The shoulder height is more than
half a meter, it can be up to as much as
80 – 90 cm.Wolves live, travel and hunt
in packs of 4-7 animals on average.
Packs include the mother and father,
called the alphas, their pups and
several other young animals.
The wolf is protected from hunting in
Finland so you are not allowed to hunt
them at all. The only exception is when
a wolf comes to a town, close to the
people.
In 2006 there was 250 wolves in Finland
but in 2010 only 150-160. One reason
behind the weekening population of the
wolves might be the illegal hunting.
4. Wood Anemone
Finnish: Valkovuokko (Anemone nemorosa) Swedish: Vitsippa
● Wood Anemone is an early-spring flowering
plant. It has heavy and sweet smelling leaves
and it's a perenn.
● The herb has rootstocks and it grows from five
to fifteen centimeters tall. It has white lobed
stemleaves.
● The small white flower is only open at daytime,
in the evening they close themselfs and bend
down to the ground. When the flower has just
blossomed or is just dying it can turn a bit red.
● The Wood Anemone blooms in April-May
● You can find the Wood Anemone in almost the
whole country, from south up to southern parts
of Lappland. It is the most common in the
southern Finland.
● It is the regional flower in Nyland (our part of
the country).
● We pick them for Mother's Day.
