WELCOME TO FULFORD ACADEMY
Welcome to Fulford Academy! We look forward to meeting you in September. As you may know, all our students are
international students. Our student population this fall comes from 11 different countries: Japan, China, Kazakhstan,
Switzerland, Brazil, Spain, Russia, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and Mexico. This diversity creates a true intercultural
experience and will help you bond with your peers through the English language, ultimately enhancing your English
language skills. You will learn so much this year and making friends from so many different countries is just the
beginning.
FULFORD ACADEMY EXPECTATIONS
Fulford Academy has great staff to help you learn English. It is important that you work hard in order to make the
most of your time here. Here are some simple rules to follow which will help you reach your goals and be successful!
While at Fulford Academy you are working on improving your English Skills through written and spoken language.
We have a rule in place that we need each and every Fulford student to abide by, it is our English only rule.
We expect you to abide by this rule in the following locations:
 All classrooms
 The 1st floor and basement areas of the school
 The common rooms
 When you are with others that do not speak your language
 When you are speaking with your roommate
 When you are in a school vehicle
 When you are on a school trip
 When you are involved in school activities and sports
ADVISORS
Each student at Fulford Academy is assigned a staff member who is their advisor.
Your advisor is available to meet with you throughout your program at Fulford Academy and will set up a
regular time to talk about how you are getting along at school. Your advisor is there to support you and to
be a friend.

EXPECTATIONS FOR CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR
 Speak English at all times
 Arrive to class on time and be ready to listen and to participate
 Always wear your school uniform and make sure that it is clean
 Ask questions, inside and outside of the classroom, whenever you don’t understand, we are here to help.
 Be prepared for every class with your books and homework completed
 Be honest and respectful with staff and students
 Check with your teacher whether you may use any electronic devices in class
 Personal phones are not to be used in class. They should be placed on your desk for the teacher to see at
all times
Participate in class, join the conversation, help other students, put up your hand, and ask questions; your
good effort will be noted by teachers and staff alike
 Hand in only your own work—do not copy work from other students or from the internet
 Plagiarism is not acceptable at Fulford Academy –what is plagiarism?
- Submitting someone else's work and saying that it is yours
- Copying work out of a text book, from the internet or from your friends
- Is against the law - academic dishonesty is a major offence at Fulford Academy.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE
All students are required to follow the school dress code during the academic day.
Boys will need to bring their own formal grey pants and white dress shirts with collar that buttons to the top.
Boys can wear white undershirts under their dress shirt. They should wear black dress shoes, a black belt and black
or grey socks.
Girls will need to bring their own formal grey pants and/or grey skirt (length: maximum 1 inch above the knee) and
white dress shirts with collar that buttons to the top. Girls can wear a white bra or camisole under their shirt. No
bright colours please. Girls wear black dress shoes (heel height: maximum 1.5 inch). If girls wear skirts, they need
to wear black or navy knee socks or panty hose (tights). If they are wearing grey pants, they need to wear a black
belt and black or grey socks.
For sports, students are asked to bring their own gym navy blue or black shorts, jogging or track pants and two
pairs of running shoes; one for indoor and one for outdoor use.
Fulford Academy provides students with a Fulford tie, a school cardigan, and a gym t-shirt. Additional ties
and cardigans can be purchased at the school during the year.

worn during sports class.

STUDY HALL
Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening you will attend a one hour (grades 7 and 8) or a two
hour (grades 9, 10 and ESL) study hall. Everyone will have one hour of study hall on Sundays. During study hall there
will be a supervisor to help you with your homework.
These are the study hall rules:
 Arrive on time with your books and homework
 Go to the restroom and get your drink of water before coming to study hall
 Work quietly at a desk in the study hall.
 When you need help ask the supervisor, they are there to help you.
 You may not use MSN, Facebook, any social media or translators during study hall.
 You need a teacher’s permission to use a computer for homework.
 Teachers and supervisors will set the rules in their study hall class with regard to the use of smart
phones and listening to music.
 Your cell phones can be brought to study hall but must be on the desk so that the teachers and
supervisors can see them.
 You have a 5 minute break to get a drink and go to the restroom only.
 The Noodle Nook is closed during study hall.
If all of your homework is finished and checked by your supervisor, spend the rest of the time quietly reading,
working on your vocabulary, or tidying your binder.
LAUNDRY
We offer a laundry service to our students. Each student is assigned a specific day each week when he/she needs
to drop off or pick up his/her laundry.
 Every piece of clothing that you send to the laundry must have your name on it (labels are being
provided)
 Everyone will be given a canvas laundry bag in your welcome basket (please put your name on it) for
you to use to take your laundry to be washed each week
 You will be assigned a day to have your laundry washed
Laundry Day Routine
 Place all your dirty laundry in your canvas bag along with your bedding (sheets and pillowcases)
 Bring your laundry to the laundry room in the morning on your scheduled day and give it to the laundry
attendant
 Please provide her with any washing instructions (wash in cold, do not dry etc.)
 Your laundry will be available for pick up at 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm, an RA will let you know when to pick up
your clean clothing and bedding
 Special laundry requests must be taken up with Mrs. McCarthy
Bedding Exchange
 You must bring your bedding down on your scheduled laundry day and have it exchanged for a new set
of sheets and comforter.

STUDENT DORM ROOMS
Each student is assigned a dorm room. There are four students per room. In your room, you will
have a desk, a tall storage unit for hanging clothing and a lockable shelved storage unit for folded
clothing and for personal valuables, a twin bed with pillows, a comforter and linens. You may also
purchase linens once you arrive at the school. It is important to be realistic on how many things
students bring to a boarding school. There is limited storage space.
COMMON ROOMS
There are common areas in the dorm that are for relaxation and for socializing. Each common
area has a television, game console and a DVD player. These areas may be used during free
time after all school obligations are met. In the common areas “English only” is spoken.
Students should be respectful of others using these spaces.
BATHROOM FACILITIES
Students in residence share bathroom facilities. Toilets, sinks and showers are available in both the girls and boys residences.
Students should keep these areas tidy. Washrooms are cleaned at least once a day by our housekeeping staff.
TAKING CARE OF YOUR DORM ROOM
Now that you are living with many other students please follow the list of guidelines:
• Always think about the people around you and their space
• Keep your side of the room clean and tidy at all times
• All dirty clothes belong in a laundry bag and clean clothes should be put away
• Make sure that your lights are off and all electronics are turned off when you leave your room
• Place your shoes neatly in the closet or on a shoe rack
• No full size game systems are allowed in your room (such as PSIII, WII, Xbox etc.…)
DORM RULES
 You must always sign out when leaving your residence.
 Be respectful of the dorm and facility.
 No running in the halls and facilities.
 You may keep water in you room but not food.
ROOM INSPECTION
You are expected to make your own bed and keep items off of the floors to facilitate cleaning. You will have
daily room inspections. To pass your daily inspection, please have your room neatly organized, just like in the
pictures below.

Daily
 Make your bed nicely.
 Hang up your clothes or put them in your shelved unit.
 Lock up your valuables in your shelved unit.
 Keep your space tidy.
 No food or drinks in your bedroom.
 Straighten up your desk.
 Keep your chair free of clothing and books.
 Your floor should be clear of all electronic cords, clothing and shoes.
 Turn off your lights and your fans when leaving your room.
 Respect your roommates’ space.
 Weekly
 Wash your laundry regularly on your scheduled laundry day.
 Wash your bed sheets once a week.
BEDTIME
The bedtime routine: students are not to be outside of their rooms past the designated time.
1) During the week all electronics are to be placed on your desk at 9:30 pm (grade 7 & grade 8)
and 10:15 pm (for the remaining students)
2) Bedtime and lights out during the week is 10:00 pm for grades 7 & 8
3) Bedtime and lights out during the week is 10:45 pm for grades 9, 10 and ESL
4) Friday and Saturday - 11:45 pm in your rooms and quiet
5) Sunday electronics on your desk at 9:15 pm, lights out at 10:00 pm
No one is allowed to go into anyone else’s room after bedtime.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
PERSONAL HYGIENE = BEING CLEAN AND FRESH EVERY DAY
To feel clean and fresh every day you should:
1. Take a shower.
2. Brush your teeth every morning and night.
3. Comb your hair.
4. Wear clean clothes everyday.
5. Wear your pajamas to bed, not daytime clothing.
HEALTH INSURANCE
Health Insurance is a requirement for all students studying at Fulford Academy and is included in the program fee.
Fulford Academy will register students with a “Student Guard” Health Insurance plan.
You can view the details of the policy on the Student Guard website at http://www.guard.me, choose “Downloads”
and then “Policy”. The policy can be downloaded in the following languages: English, Spanish, French, German,
Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese.

MEDICAL INFORMATION
In order to care for each student properly, it is of the utmost importance that we have complete and up-to-date
medical information for each student. Your parents will have completed the Admissions Mandatory Forms which
contain information about your general health and about any allergies that you may have.
In the past, parents have sent medication, preferred remedies and natural medicines with their child for colds,
headaches, etc. Please be aware that all non-prescribed medications with the possible exception of vitamin pills will
be collected upon students’ arrival and will not be given to the student.
The numerous supplements and natural medicines that arrive with our students have pharmacological effects that
can lead to complications with medications that may be prescribed following the child’s arrival at Fulford Academy.
This, in conjunction with a lack of English labeling on most of the medicines received only adds to the uncertainty,
therefore increasing the risk of unexpected complications. To avoid these complications with prescribed medical
treatments, no personal medications or remedies will be allowed or given. Please do not send any of these
with the student.
Students will receive care from staff on an ongoing basis for things like colds, headaches, etc. Acting as prudent
parents, the Fulford Academy administration will provide appropriate care that will include non-prescription
medication and scheduling medical or dental appointments when necessary.
PRESCRIBED MEDICINE AND ILLNESS
INCLUDES ANY MEDICINE FROM YOUR DOCTOR, YOUR HOME, OR A STORE
1. If you come with prescription medication, it will be locked up and given to you as need
be by a staff member (non-prescription medicines will not be distributed)
2. You cannot keep medicine in your room
3. Do not give your medication to anyone else
4. Do not take anyone else’s medication. We need to write down what you are taking in case of a hospital visit
and for safety reasons
5. If you are going to take vitamins, they must say what they are in English on the bottle and they will be stored
in the vitamins bin.
SICKNESS
If you are sick YOU must see a staff member yourself, DO NOT send another student. If you are too sick to get
out of bed, ask someone to get a staff member to come and see you.
The staff must see you to assess your sickness. They will make a decision if you need medication or need to see
a doctor. The student health staff will be checking on you throughout the
day.
If you are going to stay in bed you will need permission from a staff
member before going to your bedroom. This can be given by Mrs.
McCarthy or by Mrs. Robinson-Allen who will inform your teachers.
When you are sick, all of your electronics will be taken and locked up in
the storage closet until the next day when you are feeling better.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC ITEMS
Canadian electrical current is 110 volts AC. Most Asian and European appliances (shavers, hair dryers, etc.) are of a
different voltage, an adapter is needed to work of the appliances. The adapters cannot be bought in Canada.
Small devices like iPods, MP3 players, etc. are allowed.
Please note that cooking or heating appliances are not allowed in the residence rooms (kettles, rice cookers,
toasters, personal heaters, etc.).
CELL PHONES
Students may bring a cell phone to school. Students will only be allowed to access their cell phones during the
academic day or after bedtime with specific permission from their teachers or staff members. Students using their
cell phones inappropriately during these times will have their phones confiscated for a period of time. Parents are
reminded to respect their child’s need for sleep and availability for school programs; parents can always send
messages via email or through staff members.
INTERNET
Students will be able to connect to our students’ Wi-Fi. We will set it up for them when they arrive at the school. The
students’ internet access is limited and it will be turned off during the academic day and during study hall. If students
need access to internet for academic purposes during that time, they will have access to our school computers.
Students have access to the internet during the following times:
 Monday – Thursday: 9 pm – 11 pm
 Friday: 9 pm – 1 am
 Saturday: all day until 1 am
 Sunday: all day until 10 pm
SOCIAL NETWORKING SAFETY
When using social media:
- Do not put personal information on the sites.
- Restrict your profile
- Only accept people you know
- Post only appropriate photos
All the information and pictures you post will be there forever. Your future schools, employers and family will be able
to see it is so think before posting anything.
COMPUTERS USE
All students must read the information technology use agreement and sign a contract outlining acceptable computer
and network use at the school. (Appendix) The school administration and individual classroom teachers review the
acceptable use of computers and the network regularly.
The school provides school computers in each classroom for students’ use throughout the day and on evenings
where they are able to use internet to email family and friends. Students are welcome to bring their own laptop and

use the school wireless network. Students may be allowed to use their personal computers in the classroom as part
of the ESL Foundation Program.
We strongly encourage all students who bring computers to school to have their computer operating systems and all
software operating in English. If students’ computers are not in English, then repairs and maintenance may be
difficult or impossible in Canada.
Students must be prepared to turn off and not use their electronic devices each evening to ensure that they get
enough sleeping time.
Electronic translators may not be used in the classroom during the academic day or for homework completion.
COMPUTER RULES
Personal computer time and e-mails are allowed only after classes and after study hall or during your free time on
the weekends.
LOG OFF the computer before you leave the classroom.
If you need help, ask for help!
You are provided with a Fulford email account and a login and password for the school computers in the classroom.
 No food or drinks are allowed around the computer in any of the classrooms.
 No MSN, Skype or other chat program during class time or study hall time.
 No Facebook or other social networking website during class time or study hall time.
 Do not unplug or change any parts of the computer.
 Do not take any parts of the computer from the classroom.
COMPUTER POLICY
Fulford Academy computers and the network are to be used for educational purposes consistent with the
objectives of the school.
 There will be no commercial activities, no threatening or obscene material retrieved, sent or otherwise
processed.
 You are not to log on the network(s) with another user’s ID/password. Students using public access
email and chat will uphold standards of proper etiquette.
 You are responsible for the backup of all files. Failure to do so will not be accepted as an explanation for
incomplete or late assignments.
 All software on computers at Fulford Academy must be properly licensed.
 No personal files may be downloaded or stored on the network other than those needed for schoolwork.
 You are not to use the network after “lights out”.
 You may not attempt to get around content filtering system, or log into our staff network.
The consequences of violations of the above may include the following:
• The student access account will be terminated.
• The student may be suspended or dismissed from the school.

PARENTAL COMMUNICATION TIME
We provide two times in the day for students to communicate with family and friends back home. During this
time communication tools such as Skype, We Chat, Face Time, and any other communication tool you may
use. At these time internet access is limited.
Morning
- 7 am to 8 am
Evenings
- 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm
RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE USE OF ELECTRONICS
Electronics are computers, cell phones, iTouch, iPad, PSP, Nindendo DS, and other similar devices.
Internet is turned off at 10:00 pm on weekdays and at 1:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
At 10:15 pm all electronic devices must be placed on your desk and stay there for the night.
To enjoy the privilege of keeping your electronics at all times, you must use your electronics responsibly. If you do
any of the following actions, then you will be asked to hand in your electronic devices at 10:00 pm for 3 days.
During the school day, do not:
- Misuse electronics in class/study hall/when sick
- Use your cell phone during class time or study hall without proper permission
- Use electronics at break/meal times
- Sleep in class
- Lend/borrow electronics to another student that has lost their privileges
Before or after the school day, do not:
- Miss breakfast
- Be late for morning announcements in dining room or classroom
- Be late for bedtime (10:30 pm on weekdays, 11:45 pm on weekends, 10:00pm on Sundays) (Grade 7 & 8
students 10:00 pm on weekdays)
- Use electronics after lights out (11:00 pm on weekdays)
- Forget to place your electronics on your desk at 9:45pm or 10:15pm and leaving them there for the entire
night
- Lend/borrow electronics to another student overnight when they have lost their privileges
- Miss handing in your electronics at night if you have lost your priveleges or, you will lose them for an
additional 3 days
Schedule for those who lost their electronics privilege:
6:30 am – 8:00 am Electronics pick-up (when the RA is available)
10:00 pm Electronics hand-in (if you have lost the privilege of keeping them)

DINING HALL EXPECTATIONS
The dining hall is a public place, where you must respect others.
Please come to the dining hall dressed in your school uniform during academic weekdays or appropriate clothing on
weekends. No sleeping wear, slippers, bare feet
Please sign in for breakfast and for dinner. You do not need to sign in for lunch on weekdays.
On weekdays, during lunch and dinner please sit at your assigned seating. At dinner time please stay in the dining
hall until you are dismissed by the supervisor on duty.
Try new foods. If you think you may not like something please ask to try a little and if you enjoy the food, go back for
more
If you are allergic to a food or do not eat a food for a religious reason, please let us know, and we will make sure
there is always a meal for you.
Please push your chair in and take your dirty dishes to the dish room after the meal
The dining hall tidying schedule is posted on the door.
SNACKS
After meals you can find food in the fridge located in the Noodle Nook. Each student will be assigned a locker in
which to store their own food. You are not allowed to keep any food or drinks in your room.
DINING HALL DUTIES
Each week a student is assigned to help get the dining hall ready for dinner by helping with items such as getting
the cutlery, napkins, plates, salt and pepper ready. Each night, a different student has to make sure the noodle
nook and great room are neat and clean.
FOOD DELIVERIES
On weekends, students may order in food as long as curfew times are respected (before 3:00 pm on Sunday). Food
cannot be ordered for delivery by students during the weekdays Monday to Thursday.
BRINGING FOOD FROM HOME
Receiving packages from home is great, but there is limited space to store your food items.
We will provide you with a small locker in the Noodle Nook in which to keep your favourite snacks. Food and drinks
are not permitted in your room.
The school provides nutritious meals and snacks each day along with nutritious snacks for you during break times.
You are provided with fruits, vegetables and some sweets to eat. Meals are well balanced and we try our very best
to appeal to everyone’s tastes as best we can. With students from so many different countries, let us know if there is
any food item that you would like to have and we will do our best to provide it.
You can purchase your snacks and drinks from our local grocery stores which have a great selection of Asian
noodle, crackers, rice and much more. You can purchase what you need each week from these stores and store
them safely in your locker.

REFRIGERATOR PRIVILAGES
There is a refrigerator available for students to place a small number of items in that need to be refrigerated. The
space is very limited; if you store items in the fridge, write your name on it. These are stored there at you own risk.
Students are not to take items that have another student’s name on it and that they have not purchased themselves.
STUDENT LIFE PROGRAM
Fulford offers you wonderful opportunities to experience cultural, recreational and sporting events offered in
Brockville, nearby Ottawa and Kingston, as well as other destinations throughout Ontario and Quebec. One
weekend a term we offer an optional trip to places like Toronto, Niagara Falls, Montreal and Quebec City. While
away, you can participate in activities like sightseeing, skiing, shopping, attending hockey games, and swimming in
crystal clear lakes and rivers. Students on trips around our city or to and from nearby cities will be driven by staff in
our school vehicles or on certified coach buses.
Students are not allowed to go swimming at any time unless there is a qualified life guard on duty. All students will
have to pass the YMCA’s swimming evaluation before they are able to participate in any
swimming activities.
On free nights, you are permitted to go out with school friends for 3 hours to
dinner, shopping or to a movie. In this case, you will use our local safe and
dependable taxi services. You must inform staff where you are going and for
how long, and then sign out. Always bring your cell
phone with you and program the school’s telephone
number into it.
On campus, you can enjoy your free time with your friends playing games in the
common rooms located throughout the school. The great hall is an ideal place to watch
movies on the big screen, join in on a game of “Risk” or “Monopoly,” or to challenge
another student to a game of chess or “foosball.” The boys’ common room offers ping
pong, air hockey and computer games on the TV. The girls’ common room also has ping pong and other fun
activities that allow the girls to chat and socialize – in English of course!
CLUBS
Fulford offers a wide variety of clubs to help you experience new activities in an English-only environment.
Participating in a club teaches you the value of working with others. We have many different types of clubs to ensure
that all students will find something that appeals to them.
Examples of clubs offered: Art club, YMCA club, ping pong club, dance club, multimedia club, sports club, golf,
swimming, yearbook, singing lessons, scouts, horseback riding, kickboxing, martial arts, badminton, tennis and
many others.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community service means volunteering to help others. In Ontario, to graduate from high school, students need to do
40 hours of community service.
Students at Fulford Academy will be involved in at least two community service activities each year. For example,
volunteering at Loaves & Fishes or at our local animal shelter. Fundraising activities are offered throughout the year
so that you can help to raise money for local charities.

LEAVING SCHOOL PROPERTY
To leave the school property at any time, for any reason, you must get permission first, and then you must sign
out.
SIGN OUT POLICY
School policy is that staff must know where you are at all times. All students who are taking advantage of a free
evening out are required to do the following:
1. Get permission from a staff member first and let them know where, when and how long.
2. If you are 16 years of age or older, you may sign out in the student binder and go out during the day on a
weekend (3 hours or less) on your own.
3. If you are younger than 16 years of age, you can sign out with another school friend, and go out during the
day on a weekend (3 hours or less). (never on your own)
4. Anyone (all ages) wanting to go out after 5 pm on a designated free night must be with at least one other
school friend.
5. You MUST sign in when you return and check in with the RA
Remember
- You are only to be away from the school for up to three hours
- If you are running late, call the school and speak to an RA to inform them of your late return and why you
are late.
Remember
- It is always important to tell us where you are going and when you will be back.
- Leaving school property is a privilege, not a right and you must earn the trust of the staff.
Campus curfew
All students must be in the building by 7:00 pm on your free night, by 10:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and
by 5:00 pm on Sundays, unless prior written permission has been given.
WEEKEND LEAVES
If you plan to visit agents and/or family members on a weekend, staff needs the information by Wednesday of
the same week. Please ask for the weekend leave form that will need to be filled out by your parent or
guardian in order to leave the school. You are granted permission to only be away one weekend a month.
Students are not able to stay in a hotel without adult supervision.

HOUSE SYSTEM AND STUDENT LEADERSHIP
The student leadership programs at Fulford Academy offer a variety of ways for you to gain the skills and
confidence of being a leader. We have a tiered system in which students can choose a level of commitment and
participation that best suits them:
- Class representatives assist teachers in the class on a rotating weekly basis.
- House captains are positive and enthusiastic role models for their peers during house activities throughout the
year.
- Prefects are hard working and outgoing, and demonstrate leadership skills. They will be held to a higher
standard than other students.
HOUSES
Fulford Academy has a “house system”. The student body is divided into six houses with about 15 students
and 10 staff to each house. Each house is named after an important person who has helped support Fulford
Academy and each house has its own cheer.
You to get to know your fellow house members (both students and staff) who will be your team members for
competitions in academics, athletics and social events.
You can gain points for your house by following school rules, being involved in school life and having a positive
attitude.

POINT SYSTEM
NEW to Fulford Academy is our point system. There will be points associated with many of the activities,
sports, and academics you are involved in during the year. The points that you earn will go toward your house.
Points will be tallied each week to determine the student of the week and house of the week resulting in special
rewards and privileges.
STUDENT LEADERS
During the year, students can apply to become Student Leaders. If you become a student leader, you will have
responsibilities such as supporting your peers and helping the residential staff with their duties. As a thank you for
your effort, you will receive special privileges.
A Leadership Handbook will be available when you arrive for more information about the school’s leadership
program and opportunities.
ALTERING YOUR APPEARANCE
No Student will be able to change their appearance while under the care of Fulford Academy
 No cutting your hair in the school, a professional must cut it at a salon
 Other students cannot cut your hair
 No piercings may be done while attending Fulford Academy (earrings, belly, etc.)
 No dying or colouring of your hair (your parents can give permission to Mrs. McCarthy to have this done
by a professional)
 No getting tattoos while you are attending Fulford Academy

SCENT FREE
We ask that students keep the use of cologne, perfume and air fresheners to a minimum. We have some staff
members that are sensitive to scents in the building.
PERSONAL PROPERTY , BANK ACCOUNTS AND ALLOWANCE
Upon arrival, students will be provided with a large personal envelope for the safekeeping of passports, study
permits, visas, airline tickets, etc. Students may access these items with the assistance of staff. These precautions
are important as they prevent the loss of this important documentation property.
Fulford Academy is not responsible for students’ personal items that have been lost or damaged. Please do not
bring any valuables such as jewelry, expensive watches etc. to school – we cannot take responsibility for their
safekeeping.
As part of our school orientation, it will be explained to students that they are responsible for the safekeeping of their
own possessions and money. Every student will be provided with a small lockable space in which they can keep
their valuables. Students should not keep more than $100.00 CA in the school.
Students who are 14 years or older will be taken to the bank to open a Canadian bank account where they will
deposit all but $100. The bank will provide the student with a debit card to use for spending money. Parents may
wire money to the student’s personal bank account as needed.
Students 13 years or younger may also open a Canadian bank account, or they may have a weekly allowance
managed through our business office. In this case, parents must have indicated on the Admissions Mandatory
Forms a specific dollar amount to be provided each week to the student from their student account. A sum of $600
per term is suggested for parents to provide.
As part of our programs at the school, we endeavour to teach students respect for their own possessions and for the
possessions of others.
Students are not allowed to sell their belongings to other students.
For the security of all in the campus, the exterior doors are equipped with a security alarm system. Staff take care of
each student’s personal and social well-being. Full time supervision and support is provided for the students by
these responsible adults.
CONSEQUENCES
Gatings are a consequence of not abiding by the school policies, rules and regulations.

#2 Gating – loss of your next free night and you must check in with a staff member every hour with your uniform
on
You will be gated due to:
 Failure to sign-out before going out.
 Not asking for permission to leave the school.
 Failure to return on time after being off campus for 3 hours.
 Failure to call if you are running late for any reason
 Failure to return to the school by curfew.
 Receive 3X’s in one day (English-only board).
 Failure of room inspection for 3 days in one week (students to be warned on the 2nd failure).
 Missed or late to class or school activity (if late more than 5 minutes).

Detentions will be granted if you are:
 Late or uncooperative at bedtime (10:00 or 10:45 pm)
 Disrespectful and uncooperative during study hall or a scheduled activity
 Out of your room after lights out (11:00 pm) without permission from an RA
 In another student’s room after bedtime
 Late for morning assembly (Monday’s in dining room and in your classrooms the rest of the week)
 Missing your assigned duty (Noodle Nook, Great Hall, etc.)
 Chewing gum in the school
 Sleeping in class or study hall
 Using inappropriate language or tone with staff and/or students
 Late or miss a meal
Work hours will be assigned to you if you are:
 Late or miss your club. Your free time will be given up to help around the school.
MAJOR OFFENCES
Sometimes behavior offences are more serious and there are some actions which will not be tolerated. These
major offences will result in an immediate meeting with the Head of School and will have serious
consequences.
Major offences include:
 Fighting
 Bullying, harassment or intimidation
 Verbal, physical or sexual abuse
 Boys in a girl’s room or girls in a boy’s room
 Inappropriate physical intimacy
 Breaking the curfew
 Inappropriate computer use
 Disrespect for staff or property
 Academic dishonesty
 Stealing
 Smoking or other tobacco use
 Use of drugs or alcohol
Consequences or major offenses include:
 Gating # 2 - reporting every hour on your free time in proper dress code, with no external activities
(clubs only)
 Supervised work hours
 Suspension (student will have to leave the school for a short period)
 Expulsion (student will have to leave the school permanently)
If a student is suspended from school they will be expected to keep up with their school work
during their absence.
If a student is suspended or expelled from school, there will be no refund of fees.
A student may be put on “probation”, which means they will be gated and they will sign a contract for good
behaviour. If they do not exhibit good behaviour while on probation, they will either be suspended or expelled
from the school.

UNAUTHORIZED AND ILLEGAL DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO
Fulford Academy forbids the possession, use or distribution of prohibited drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The
unauthorized or inappropriate use of prescription medication is also considered a drug offence. In Canada,
being involved with any of these materials is illegal for students, and could lead to serious problems under
Canadian and international law.
Fulford Academy is a tobacco-free campus. When a student is caught using tobacco for the first time, the
student will be assigned ten hours of work detail and will be given information about strategies to stop tobacco
use. Following the second time a student is caught using tobacco the student will be given twenty hours of work
detail and will be gated until the hours are completed. When a student is caught for a third time, the student will
be given twenty hours of work detail, will be gated until the hours are completed and will be placed on
probation. Additional tobacco offences will result in an evaluation of the terms of probation.
If a student is involved with alcohol, unauthorized drugs, medication or drug paraphernalia at the Academy, they
will receive consequences that range from probation and gating to expulsion. The Academy considers rolling
papers, pipes, clips and any modified apparatus to be paraphernalia. A student who has a second alcohol or
drug related offence may be subject to expulsion. Students who distribute substances such as unauthorized
drugs, alcohol or medication while attending Fulford Academy may be expelled. If the Head of School has
reasonable suspicion that a student is involved with drugs, the Academy may require them to be tested for
drugs by a medical professional.
PHYSICAL INTIMACY
While Fulford Academy recognizes that emotional attachments are a natural part of
adolescence, relationships of a physical nature are a serious concern in our
community. Our small size, the varied ages of our students and the lack of parental
oversight make student relationships a problem. In particular, sexual intimacy is not
permitted for any students under our care. Public displays of affection beyond hand
holding are forbidden and will be dealt with as disciplinary issues. Parents will be
contacted if physical intimacy is suspected.
FIRE SAFETY
When you first take a tour of the school find out where the emergency exits are.
If you hear the fire alarm (bell):
• Remain calm.
• Close your windows and leave your room door closed
• Go to the exit closest to you
• Walk fast. Don’t run
• Do not take personal items with you
• When you get outside, go to the back parking lot.
• Stand with your roommate in a straight line.

• Boys will stand in one row, girls in another row.
• Remain quiet and listen to instructions
• A staff member will take attendance to make sure everyone is safe.
• Stay with your group until you are told you can go back into the building

  • 4. 3 WELCOME TO FULFORD ACADEMY Welcome to Fulford Academy! We look forward to meeting you in September. As you may know, all our students are international students. Our student population this fall comes from 11 different countries: Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Brazil, Spain, Russia, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and Mexico. This diversity creates a true intercultural experience and will help you bond with your peers through the English language, ultimately enhancing your English language skills. You will learn so much this year and making friends from so many different countries is just the beginning. FULFORD ACADEMY EXPECTATIONS Fulford Academy has great staff to help you learn English. It is important that you work hard in order to make the most of your time here. Here are some simple rules to follow which will help you reach your goals and be successful! While at Fulford Academy you are working on improving your English Skills through written and spoken language. We have a rule in place that we need each and every Fulford student to abide by, it is our English only rule. We expect you to abide by this rule in the following locations:  All classrooms  The 1st floor and basement areas of the school  The common rooms  When you are with others that do not speak your language  When you are speaking with your roommate  When you are in a school vehicle  When you are on a school trip  When you are involved in school activities and sports ADVISORS Each student at Fulford Academy is assigned a staff member who is their advisor. Your advisor is available to meet with you throughout your program at Fulford Academy and will set up a regular time to talk about how you are getting along at school. Your advisor is there to support you and to be a friend.
  • 5. 4 EXPECTATIONS FOR CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR  Speak English at all times  Arrive to class on time and be ready to listen and to participate  Always wear your school uniform and make sure that it is clean  Ask questions, inside and outside of the classroom, whenever you don’t understand, we are here to help.  Be prepared for every class with your books and homework completed  Be honest and respectful with staff and students  Check with your teacher whether you may use any electronic devices in class  Personal phones are not to be used in class. They should be placed on your desk for the teacher to see at all times Participate in class, join the conversation, help other students, put up your hand, and ask questions; your good effort will be noted by teachers and staff alike  Hand in only your own work—do not copy work from other students or from the internet  Plagiarism is not acceptable at Fulford Academy –what is plagiarism? - Submitting someone else's work and saying that it is yours - Copying work out of a text book, from the internet or from your friends - Is against the law - academic dishonesty is a major offence at Fulford Academy. SCHOOL DRESS CODE All students are required to follow the school dress code during the academic day. Boys will need to bring their own formal grey pants and white dress shirts with collar that buttons to the top. Boys can wear white undershirts under their dress shirt. They should wear black dress shoes, a black belt and black or grey socks. Girls will need to bring their own formal grey pants and/or grey skirt (length: maximum 1 inch above the knee) and white dress shirts with collar that buttons to the top. Girls can wear a white bra or camisole under their shirt. No bright colours please. Girls wear black dress shoes (heel height: maximum 1.5 inch). If girls wear skirts, they need to wear black or navy knee socks or panty hose (tights). If they are wearing grey pants, they need to wear a black belt and black or grey socks. For sports, students are asked to bring their own gym navy blue or black shorts, jogging or track pants and two pairs of running shoes; one for indoor and one for outdoor use. Fulford Academy provides students with a Fulford tie, a school cardigan, and a gym t-shirt. Additional ties and cardigans can be purchased at the school during the year.
  • 6. 5 SCHOOL DRESS CODE Fulford Academy has two school dress codes, one is worn during academic classes and one is worn during sports class. Academic Dress Code This is the dress code that you wear to go to your classes and on special school trips  Grey pants / skirt or shorts (for warm weather) skirts need to be knee length  White dress shirt / white blouse  Navy tie with Fulford crest  Navy cardigan with a Fulford crest  Pair of dark shoes and dress socks Physical Education Dress Code This is the dress code that you wear to go to sports class.  Coloured house t-shirt or sweat shirt  Navy blue/ black shorts and/or navy blue/ black sports pants  2 pairs of sports shoes (one for indoors and one for outdoors) and socks

  • 9. 8 STUDY HALL Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening you will attend a one hour (grades 7 and 8) or a two hour (grades 9, 10 and ESL) study hall. Everyone will have one hour of study hall on Sundays. During study hall there will be a supervisor to help you with your homework. These are the study hall rules:  Arrive on time with your books and homework  Go to the restroom and get your drink of water before coming to study hall  Work quietly at a desk in the study hall.  When you need help ask the supervisor, they are there to help you.  You may not use MSN, Facebook, any social media or translators during study hall.  You need a teacher’s permission to use a computer for homework.  Teachers and supervisors will set the rules in their study hall class with regard to the use of smart phones and listening to music.  Your cell phones can be brought to study hall but must be on the desk so that the teachers and supervisors can see them.  You have a 5 minute break to get a drink and go to the restroom only.  The Noodle Nook is closed during study hall. If all of your homework is finished and checked by your supervisor, spend the rest of the time quietly reading, working on your vocabulary, or tidying your binder. LAUNDRY We offer a laundry service to our students. Each student is assigned a specific day each week when he/she needs to drop off or pick up his/her laundry.  Every piece of clothing that you send to the laundry must have your name on it (labels are being provided)  Everyone will be given a canvas laundry bag in your welcome basket (please put your name on it) for you to use to take your laundry to be washed each week  You will be assigned a day to have your laundry washed Laundry Day Routine  Place all your dirty laundry in your canvas bag along with your bedding (sheets and pillowcases)  Bring your laundry to the laundry room in the morning on your scheduled day and give it to the laundry attendant  Please provide her with any washing instructions (wash in cold, do not dry etc.)  Your laundry will be available for pick up at 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm, an RA will let you know when to pick up your clean clothing and bedding  Special laundry requests must be taken up with Mrs. McCarthy Bedding Exchange  You must bring your bedding down on your scheduled laundry day and have it exchanged for a new set of sheets and comforter.
  • 10. 9 STUDENT DORM ROOMS Each student is assigned a dorm room. There are four students per room. In your room, you will have a desk, a tall storage unit for hanging clothing and a lockable shelved storage unit for folded clothing and for personal valuables, a twin bed with pillows, a comforter and linens. You may also purchase linens once you arrive at the school. It is important to be realistic on how many things students bring to a boarding school. There is limited storage space. COMMON ROOMS There are common areas in the dorm that are for relaxation and for socializing. Each common area has a television, game console and a DVD player. These areas may be used during free time after all school obligations are met. In the common areas “English only” is spoken. Students should be respectful of others using these spaces. BATHROOM FACILITIES Students in residence share bathroom facilities. Toilets, sinks and showers are available in both the girls and boys residences. Students should keep these areas tidy. Washrooms are cleaned at least once a day by our housekeeping staff. TAKING CARE OF YOUR DORM ROOM Now that you are living with many other students please follow the list of guidelines: • Always think about the people around you and their space • Keep your side of the room clean and tidy at all times • All dirty clothes belong in a laundry bag and clean clothes should be put away • Make sure that your lights are off and all electronics are turned off when you leave your room • Place your shoes neatly in the closet or on a shoe rack • No full size game systems are allowed in your room (such as PSIII, WII, Xbox etc.…) DORM RULES  You must always sign out when leaving your residence.  Be respectful of the dorm and facility.  No running in the halls and facilities.  You may keep water in you room but not food. ROOM INSPECTION You are expected to make your own bed and keep items off of the floors to facilitate cleaning. You will have daily room inspections. To pass your daily inspection, please have your room neatly organized, just like in the pictures below.
  • 11. 10 Daily  Make your bed nicely.  Hang up your clothes or put them in your shelved unit.  Lock up your valuables in your shelved unit.  Keep your space tidy.  No food or drinks in your bedroom.  Straighten up your desk.  Keep your chair free of clothing and books.  Your floor should be clear of all electronic cords, clothing and shoes.  Turn off your lights and your fans when leaving your room.  Respect your roommates’ space.  Weekly  Wash your laundry regularly on your scheduled laundry day.  Wash your bed sheets once a week. BEDTIME The bedtime routine: students are not to be outside of their rooms past the designated time. 1) During the week all electronics are to be placed on your desk at 9:30 pm (grade 7 & grade 8) and 10:15 pm (for the remaining students) 2) Bedtime and lights out during the week is 10:00 pm for grades 7 & 8 3) Bedtime and lights out during the week is 10:45 pm for grades 9, 10 and ESL 4) Friday and Saturday - 11:45 pm in your rooms and quiet 5) Sunday electronics on your desk at 9:15 pm, lights out at 10:00 pm No one is allowed to go into anyone else’s room after bedtime. HEALTH AND WELLNESS PERSONAL HYGIENE = BEING CLEAN AND FRESH EVERY DAY To feel clean and fresh every day you should: 1. Take a shower. 2. Brush your teeth every morning and night. 3. Comb your hair. 4. Wear clean clothes everyday. 5. Wear your pajamas to bed, not daytime clothing. HEALTH INSURANCE Health Insurance is a requirement for all students studying at Fulford Academy and is included in the program fee. Fulford Academy will register students with a “Student Guard” Health Insurance plan. You can view the details of the policy on the Student Guard website at http://www.guard.me, choose “Downloads” and then “Policy”. The policy can be downloaded in the following languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese.
  • 12. 11 MEDICAL INFORMATION In order to care for each student properly, it is of the utmost importance that we have complete and up-to-date medical information for each student. Your parents will have completed the Admissions Mandatory Forms which contain information about your general health and about any allergies that you may have. In the past, parents have sent medication, preferred remedies and natural medicines with their child for colds, headaches, etc. Please be aware that all non-prescribed medications with the possible exception of vitamin pills will be collected upon students’ arrival and will not be given to the student. The numerous supplements and natural medicines that arrive with our students have pharmacological effects that can lead to complications with medications that may be prescribed following the child’s arrival at Fulford Academy. This, in conjunction with a lack of English labeling on most of the medicines received only adds to the uncertainty, therefore increasing the risk of unexpected complications. To avoid these complications with prescribed medical treatments, no personal medications or remedies will be allowed or given. Please do not send any of these with the student. Students will receive care from staff on an ongoing basis for things like colds, headaches, etc. Acting as prudent parents, the Fulford Academy administration will provide appropriate care that will include non-prescription medication and scheduling medical or dental appointments when necessary. PRESCRIBED MEDICINE AND ILLNESS INCLUDES ANY MEDICINE FROM YOUR DOCTOR, YOUR HOME, OR A STORE 1. If you come with prescription medication, it will be locked up and given to you as need be by a staff member (non-prescription medicines will not be distributed) 2. You cannot keep medicine in your room 3. Do not give your medication to anyone else 4. Do not take anyone else’s medication. We need to write down what you are taking in case of a hospital visit and for safety reasons 5. If you are going to take vitamins, they must say what they are in English on the bottle and they will be stored in the vitamins bin. SICKNESS If you are sick YOU must see a staff member yourself, DO NOT send another student. If you are too sick to get out of bed, ask someone to get a staff member to come and see you. The staff must see you to assess your sickness. They will make a decision if you need medication or need to see a doctor. The student health staff will be checking on you throughout the day. If you are going to stay in bed you will need permission from a staff member before going to your bedroom. This can be given by Mrs. McCarthy or by Mrs. Robinson-Allen who will inform your teachers. When you are sick, all of your electronics will be taken and locked up in the storage closet until the next day when you are feeling better.
  • 13. 12 PERSONAL ELECTRONIC ITEMS Canadian electrical current is 110 volts AC. Most Asian and European appliances (shavers, hair dryers, etc.) are of a different voltage, an adapter is needed to work of the appliances. The adapters cannot be bought in Canada. Small devices like iPods, MP3 players, etc. are allowed. Please note that cooking or heating appliances are not allowed in the residence rooms (kettles, rice cookers, toasters, personal heaters, etc.). CELL PHONES Students may bring a cell phone to school. Students will only be allowed to access their cell phones during the academic day or after bedtime with specific permission from their teachers or staff members. Students using their cell phones inappropriately during these times will have their phones confiscated for a period of time. Parents are reminded to respect their child’s need for sleep and availability for school programs; parents can always send messages via email or through staff members. INTERNET Students will be able to connect to our students’ Wi-Fi. We will set it up for them when they arrive at the school. The students’ internet access is limited and it will be turned off during the academic day and during study hall. If students need access to internet for academic purposes during that time, they will have access to our school computers. Students have access to the internet during the following times:  Monday – Thursday: 9 pm – 11 pm  Friday: 9 pm – 1 am  Saturday: all day until 1 am  Sunday: all day until 10 pm SOCIAL NETWORKING SAFETY When using social media: - Do not put personal information on the sites. - Restrict your profile - Only accept people you know - Post only appropriate photos All the information and pictures you post will be there forever. Your future schools, employers and family will be able to see it is so think before posting anything. COMPUTERS USE All students must read the information technology use agreement and sign a contract outlining acceptable computer and network use at the school. (Appendix) The school administration and individual classroom teachers review the acceptable use of computers and the network regularly. The school provides school computers in each classroom for students’ use throughout the day and on evenings where they are able to use internet to email family and friends. Students are welcome to bring their own laptop and
  • 14. 13 use the school wireless network. Students may be allowed to use their personal computers in the classroom as part of the ESL Foundation Program. We strongly encourage all students who bring computers to school to have their computer operating systems and all software operating in English. If students’ computers are not in English, then repairs and maintenance may be difficult or impossible in Canada. Students must be prepared to turn off and not use their electronic devices each evening to ensure that they get enough sleeping time. Electronic translators may not be used in the classroom during the academic day or for homework completion. COMPUTER RULES Personal computer time and e-mails are allowed only after classes and after study hall or during your free time on the weekends. LOG OFF the computer before you leave the classroom. If you need help, ask for help! You are provided with a Fulford email account and a login and password for the school computers in the classroom.  No food or drinks are allowed around the computer in any of the classrooms.  No MSN, Skype or other chat program during class time or study hall time.  No Facebook or other social networking website during class time or study hall time.  Do not unplug or change any parts of the computer.  Do not take any parts of the computer from the classroom. COMPUTER POLICY Fulford Academy computers and the network are to be used for educational purposes consistent with the objectives of the school.  There will be no commercial activities, no threatening or obscene material retrieved, sent or otherwise processed.  You are not to log on the network(s) with another user’s ID/password. Students using public access email and chat will uphold standards of proper etiquette.  You are responsible for the backup of all files. Failure to do so will not be accepted as an explanation for incomplete or late assignments.  All software on computers at Fulford Academy must be properly licensed.  No personal files may be downloaded or stored on the network other than those needed for schoolwork.  You are not to use the network after “lights out”.  You may not attempt to get around content filtering system, or log into our staff network. The consequences of violations of the above may include the following: • The student access account will be terminated. • The student may be suspended or dismissed from the school.
  • 15. 14 PARENTAL COMMUNICATION TIME We provide two times in the day for students to communicate with family and friends back home. During this time communication tools such as Skype, We Chat, Face Time, and any other communication tool you may use. At these time internet access is limited. Morning - 7 am to 8 am Evenings - 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE USE OF ELECTRONICS Electronics are computers, cell phones, iTouch, iPad, PSP, Nindendo DS, and other similar devices. Internet is turned off at 10:00 pm on weekdays and at 1:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays. At 10:15 pm all electronic devices must be placed on your desk and stay there for the night. To enjoy the privilege of keeping your electronics at all times, you must use your electronics responsibly. If you do any of the following actions, then you will be asked to hand in your electronic devices at 10:00 pm for 3 days. During the school day, do not: - Misuse electronics in class/study hall/when sick - Use your cell phone during class time or study hall without proper permission - Use electronics at break/meal times - Sleep in class - Lend/borrow electronics to another student that has lost their privileges Before or after the school day, do not: - Miss breakfast - Be late for morning announcements in dining room or classroom - Be late for bedtime (10:30 pm on weekdays, 11:45 pm on weekends, 10:00pm on Sundays) (Grade 7 & 8 students 10:00 pm on weekdays) - Use electronics after lights out (11:00 pm on weekdays) - Forget to place your electronics on your desk at 9:45pm or 10:15pm and leaving them there for the entire night - Lend/borrow electronics to another student overnight when they have lost their privileges - Miss handing in your electronics at night if you have lost your priveleges or, you will lose them for an additional 3 days Schedule for those who lost their electronics privilege: 6:30 am – 8:00 am Electronics pick-up (when the RA is available) 10:00 pm Electronics hand-in (if you have lost the privilege of keeping them)
  • 16. 15 DINING HALL EXPECTATIONS The dining hall is a public place, where you must respect others. Please come to the dining hall dressed in your school uniform during academic weekdays or appropriate clothing on weekends. No sleeping wear, slippers, bare feet Please sign in for breakfast and for dinner. You do not need to sign in for lunch on weekdays. On weekdays, during lunch and dinner please sit at your assigned seating. At dinner time please stay in the dining hall until you are dismissed by the supervisor on duty. Try new foods. If you think you may not like something please ask to try a little and if you enjoy the food, go back for more If you are allergic to a food or do not eat a food for a religious reason, please let us know, and we will make sure there is always a meal for you. Please push your chair in and take your dirty dishes to the dish room after the meal The dining hall tidying schedule is posted on the door. SNACKS After meals you can find food in the fridge located in the Noodle Nook. Each student will be assigned a locker in which to store their own food. You are not allowed to keep any food or drinks in your room. DINING HALL DUTIES Each week a student is assigned to help get the dining hall ready for dinner by helping with items such as getting the cutlery, napkins, plates, salt and pepper ready. Each night, a different student has to make sure the noodle nook and great room are neat and clean. FOOD DELIVERIES On weekends, students may order in food as long as curfew times are respected (before 3:00 pm on Sunday). Food cannot be ordered for delivery by students during the weekdays Monday to Thursday. BRINGING FOOD FROM HOME Receiving packages from home is great, but there is limited space to store your food items. We will provide you with a small locker in the Noodle Nook in which to keep your favourite snacks. Food and drinks are not permitted in your room. The school provides nutritious meals and snacks each day along with nutritious snacks for you during break times. You are provided with fruits, vegetables and some sweets to eat. Meals are well balanced and we try our very best to appeal to everyone’s tastes as best we can. With students from so many different countries, let us know if there is any food item that you would like to have and we will do our best to provide it. You can purchase your snacks and drinks from our local grocery stores which have a great selection of Asian noodle, crackers, rice and much more. You can purchase what you need each week from these stores and store them safely in your locker.
  • 17. 16 REFRIGERATOR PRIVILAGES There is a refrigerator available for students to place a small number of items in that need to be refrigerated. The space is very limited; if you store items in the fridge, write your name on it. These are stored there at you own risk. Students are not to take items that have another student’s name on it and that they have not purchased themselves. STUDENT LIFE PROGRAM Fulford offers you wonderful opportunities to experience cultural, recreational and sporting events offered in Brockville, nearby Ottawa and Kingston, as well as other destinations throughout Ontario and Quebec. One weekend a term we offer an optional trip to places like Toronto, Niagara Falls, Montreal and Quebec City. While away, you can participate in activities like sightseeing, skiing, shopping, attending hockey games, and swimming in crystal clear lakes and rivers. Students on trips around our city or to and from nearby cities will be driven by staff in our school vehicles or on certified coach buses. Students are not allowed to go swimming at any time unless there is a qualified life guard on duty. All students will have to pass the YMCA’s swimming evaluation before they are able to participate in any swimming activities. On free nights, you are permitted to go out with school friends for 3 hours to dinner, shopping or to a movie. In this case, you will use our local safe and dependable taxi services. You must inform staff where you are going and for how long, and then sign out. Always bring your cell phone with you and program the school’s telephone number into it. On campus, you can enjoy your free time with your friends playing games in the common rooms located throughout the school. The great hall is an ideal place to watch movies on the big screen, join in on a game of “Risk” or “Monopoly,” or to challenge another student to a game of chess or “foosball.” The boys’ common room offers ping pong, air hockey and computer games on the TV. The girls’ common room also has ping pong and other fun activities that allow the girls to chat and socialize – in English of course! CLUBS Fulford offers a wide variety of clubs to help you experience new activities in an English-only environment. Participating in a club teaches you the value of working with others. We have many different types of clubs to ensure that all students will find something that appeals to them. Examples of clubs offered: Art club, YMCA club, ping pong club, dance club, multimedia club, sports club, golf, swimming, yearbook, singing lessons, scouts, horseback riding, kickboxing, martial arts, badminton, tennis and many others. COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service means volunteering to help others. In Ontario, to graduate from high school, students need to do 40 hours of community service. Students at Fulford Academy will be involved in at least two community service activities each year. For example, volunteering at Loaves & Fishes or at our local animal shelter. Fundraising activities are offered throughout the year so that you can help to raise money for local charities.
  • 18. 17 LEAVING SCHOOL PROPERTY To leave the school property at any time, for any reason, you must get permission first, and then you must sign out. SIGN OUT POLICY School policy is that staff must know where you are at all times. All students who are taking advantage of a free evening out are required to do the following: 1. Get permission from a staff member first and let them know where, when and how long. 2. If you are 16 years of age or older, you may sign out in the student binder and go out during the day on a weekend (3 hours or less) on your own. 3. If you are younger than 16 years of age, you can sign out with another school friend, and go out during the day on a weekend (3 hours or less). (never on your own) 4. Anyone (all ages) wanting to go out after 5 pm on a designated free night must be with at least one other school friend. 5. You MUST sign in when you return and check in with the RA Remember - You are only to be away from the school for up to three hours - If you are running late, call the school and speak to an RA to inform them of your late return and why you are late. Remember - It is always important to tell us where you are going and when you will be back. - Leaving school property is a privilege, not a right and you must earn the trust of the staff. Campus curfew All students must be in the building by 7:00 pm on your free night, by 10:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and by 5:00 pm on Sundays, unless prior written permission has been given. WEEKEND LEAVES If you plan to visit agents and/or family members on a weekend, staff needs the information by Wednesday of the same week. Please ask for the weekend leave form that will need to be filled out by your parent or guardian in order to leave the school. You are granted permission to only be away one weekend a month. Students are not able to stay in a hotel without adult supervision.
  • 19. 18 HOUSE SYSTEM AND STUDENT LEADERSHIP The student leadership programs at Fulford Academy offer a variety of ways for you to gain the skills and confidence of being a leader. We have a tiered system in which students can choose a level of commitment and participation that best suits them: - Class representatives assist teachers in the class on a rotating weekly basis. - House captains are positive and enthusiastic role models for their peers during house activities throughout the year. - Prefects are hard working and outgoing, and demonstrate leadership skills. They will be held to a higher standard than other students. HOUSES Fulford Academy has a “house system”. The student body is divided into six houses with about 15 students and 10 staff to each house. Each house is named after an important person who has helped support Fulford Academy and each house has its own cheer. You to get to know your fellow house members (both students and staff) who will be your team members for competitions in academics, athletics and social events. You can gain points for your house by following school rules, being involved in school life and having a positive attitude.

  • 21. 20 POINT SYSTEM NEW to Fulford Academy is our point system. There will be points associated with many of the activities, sports, and academics you are involved in during the year. The points that you earn will go toward your house. Points will be tallied each week to determine the student of the week and house of the week resulting in special rewards and privileges. STUDENT LEADERS During the year, students can apply to become Student Leaders. If you become a student leader, you will have responsibilities such as supporting your peers and helping the residential staff with their duties. As a thank you for your effort, you will receive special privileges. A Leadership Handbook will be available when you arrive for more information about the school’s leadership program and opportunities. ALTERING YOUR APPEARANCE No Student will be able to change their appearance while under the care of Fulford Academy  No cutting your hair in the school, a professional must cut it at a salon  Other students cannot cut your hair  No piercings may be done while attending Fulford Academy (earrings, belly, etc.)  No dying or colouring of your hair (your parents can give permission to Mrs. McCarthy to have this done by a professional)  No getting tattoos while you are attending Fulford Academy
  • 22. 21 SCENT FREE We ask that students keep the use of cologne, perfume and air fresheners to a minimum. We have some staff members that are sensitive to scents in the building. PERSONAL PROPERTY , BANK ACCOUNTS AND ALLOWANCE Upon arrival, students will be provided with a large personal envelope for the safekeeping of passports, study permits, visas, airline tickets, etc. Students may access these items with the assistance of staff. These precautions are important as they prevent the loss of this important documentation property. Fulford Academy is not responsible for students’ personal items that have been lost or damaged. Please do not bring any valuables such as jewelry, expensive watches etc. to school – we cannot take responsibility for their safekeeping. As part of our school orientation, it will be explained to students that they are responsible for the safekeeping of their own possessions and money. Every student will be provided with a small lockable space in which they can keep their valuables. Students should not keep more than $100.00 CA in the school. Students who are 14 years or older will be taken to the bank to open a Canadian bank account where they will deposit all but $100. The bank will provide the student with a debit card to use for spending money. Parents may wire money to the student’s personal bank account as needed. Students 13 years or younger may also open a Canadian bank account, or they may have a weekly allowance managed through our business office. In this case, parents must have indicated on the Admissions Mandatory Forms a specific dollar amount to be provided each week to the student from their student account. A sum of $600 per term is suggested for parents to provide. As part of our programs at the school, we endeavour to teach students respect for their own possessions and for the possessions of others. Students are not allowed to sell their belongings to other students. For the security of all in the campus, the exterior doors are equipped with a security alarm system. Staff take care of each student’s personal and social well-being. Full time supervision and support is provided for the students by these responsible adults. CONSEQUENCES Gatings are a consequence of not abiding by the school policies, rules and regulations. #1 Gating – loss of your next free night #2 Gating – loss of your next free night and you must check in with a staff member every hour with your uniform on You will be gated due to:  Failure to sign-out before going out.  Not asking for permission to leave the school.  Failure to return on time after being off campus for 3 hours.  Failure to call if you are running late for any reason  Failure to return to the school by curfew.  Receive 3X’s in one day (English-only board).  Failure of room inspection for 3 days in one week (students to be warned on the 2nd failure).  Missed or late to class or school activity (if late more than 5 minutes).
  • 23. 22 Detentions will be granted if you are:  Late or uncooperative at bedtime (10:00 or 10:45 pm)  Disrespectful and uncooperative during study hall or a scheduled activity  Out of your room after lights out (11:00 pm) without permission from an RA  In another student’s room after bedtime  Late for morning assembly (Monday’s in dining room and in your classrooms the rest of the week)  Missing your assigned duty (Noodle Nook, Great Hall, etc.)  Chewing gum in the school  Sleeping in class or study hall  Using inappropriate language or tone with staff and/or students  Late or miss a meal Work hours will be assigned to you if you are:  Late or miss your club. Your free time will be given up to help around the school. MAJOR OFFENCES Sometimes behavior offences are more serious and there are some actions which will not be tolerated. These major offences will result in an immediate meeting with the Head of School and will have serious consequences. Major offences include:  Fighting  Bullying, harassment or intimidation  Verbal, physical or sexual abuse  Boys in a girl’s room or girls in a boy’s room  Inappropriate physical intimacy  Breaking the curfew  Inappropriate computer use  Disrespect for staff or property  Academic dishonesty  Stealing  Smoking or other tobacco use  Use of drugs or alcohol Consequences or major offenses include:  Gating # 2 - reporting every hour on your free time in proper dress code, with no external activities (clubs only)  Supervised work hours  Suspension (student will have to leave the school for a short period)  Expulsion (student will have to leave the school permanently) If a student is suspended from school they will be expected to keep up with their school work during their absence. If a student is suspended or expelled from school, there will be no refund of fees. A student may be put on “probation”, which means they will be gated and they will sign a contract for good behaviour. If they do not exhibit good behaviour while on probation, they will either be suspended or expelled from the school.
  • 24. 23 UNAUTHORIZED AND ILLEGAL DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO Fulford Academy forbids the possession, use or distribution of prohibited drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The unauthorized or inappropriate use of prescription medication is also considered a drug offence. In Canada, being involved with any of these materials is illegal for students, and could lead to serious problems under Canadian and international law. Fulford Academy is a tobacco-free campus. When a student is caught using tobacco for the first time, the student will be assigned ten hours of work detail and will be given information about strategies to stop tobacco use. Following the second time a student is caught using tobacco the student will be given twenty hours of work detail and will be gated until the hours are completed. When a student is caught for a third time, the student will be given twenty hours of work detail, will be gated until the hours are completed and will be placed on probation. Additional tobacco offences will result in an evaluation of the terms of probation. If a student is involved with alcohol, unauthorized drugs, medication or drug paraphernalia at the Academy, they will receive consequences that range from probation and gating to expulsion. The Academy considers rolling papers, pipes, clips and any modified apparatus to be paraphernalia. A student who has a second alcohol or drug related offence may be subject to expulsion. Students who distribute substances such as unauthorized drugs, alcohol or medication while attending Fulford Academy may be expelled. If the Head of School has reasonable suspicion that a student is involved with drugs, the Academy may require them to be tested for drugs by a medical professional. PHYSICAL INTIMACY While Fulford Academy recognizes that emotional attachments are a natural part of adolescence, relationships of a physical nature are a serious concern in our community. Our small size, the varied ages of our students and the lack of parental oversight make student relationships a problem. In particular, sexual intimacy is not permitted for any students under our care. Public displays of affection beyond hand holding are forbidden and will be dealt with as disciplinary issues. Parents will be contacted if physical intimacy is suspected. FIRE SAFETY When you first take a tour of the school find out where the emergency exits are. If you hear the fire alarm (bell): • Remain calm. • Close your windows and leave your room door closed • Go to the exit closest to you • Walk fast. Don’t run • Do not take personal items with you • When you get outside, go to the back parking lot. • Stand with your roommate in a straight line.
  • 25. 24 • Boys will stand in one row, girls in another row. • Remain quiet and listen to instructions • A staff member will take attendance to make sure everyone is safe. • Stay with your group until you are told you can go back into the building
