Academic institutions depend more and more on electronic resources based on the advantages of electronic resources and application of information technology which has brought several services to the users. Consequently, the academic community has been enjoying the variety of services influenced by technology driven applications. The present engineering college libraries are subscribing different packages as per the AICTE as the management coming forward to subscribe the electronic resources for their libraries. The present paper content deals with usage reports of the e-resources journal of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) monthly for last three years in GMRIT

online open access journals. These journals require no subscription and offer free full-text
articles to all.
1.1. Definition
According to AACR-2 2005, an electronic resource is: “Material (data/and/or program(s))
encoded for manipulation by a computerized device. This material may require the use of a
peripheral directly connected to a computerized device (e.g., CD-ROM device) or a connection
to a computer network (e.g., the Internet).” This definition does not include electronic resources
that do not require the use of a computer, for example, music compact discs and video discs.
There is an innovative way to involve students in this process. The student library committee
constituted for this purpose would evaluate databases on trial. The students would meet in a
library computer lab, use the resource and submit comments via an online evaluation form. This
input was considered in the decision-making process of collection development.
1.2. Development Criteria
It is necessary to develop specific criteria for adding and cancelling e-resources in libraries. For
example, use overlap analysis tool and develop a cut-off. To validate decisions, statistics are to
be greatly considered. In present financial scenario, libraries make tough cancellation
judgments. Having the data to back-up is crucial for final decision. Do a thorough analysis of
what a library is currently subscribing to and what subject areas are covered. Most likely you
will find areas of overlap.
The AICTE strongly recommended the engineering colleges to subscribe the electronic
journals through INDEST-Consortium for their Libraries. This consortium is managed by
AICTE and IIT (Delhi). They are providing different packages of E- Journals for Engineering
Colleges Libraries. In fact, individual E- packages are available at very high Prices. The
Management of Engineering Colleges is not able to spend amount on the Individual E- journals
subscriptions.
2. GMRIT DIGITAL LIBRARY
A digital library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats (as opposed to
print, microform, or other media) and accessible by computers. The content may be stored
locally or accessed remotely. Rapid advances in information technologies have revolutionized
the role of libraries. As a result, libraries face new challenges, competitors, demands, and
expectations. Libraries are redesigning services and information products to add value to their
services and to satisfy the changing information needs of the user community. Digital libraries
are the digital face of traditional libraries that include both digital collections and traditional,
fixed media collections. So, they encompass both electronic and paper materials. It will include
all the processes and services that are the backbone and nervous system of libraries. However,
such traditional processes, though forming the basis digital library work, will have to be revised
and enhanced to accommodate the differences between new digital media and traditional fixed
media.
GMRIT has set high standards for itself and offers an idyllic and conducive environment
for higher studies. It is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada. The
institute became Autonomous in 2012-13. The student community at GMRIT is offered a broad
spectrum of technical courses in tune with industry requirements. The Institute has been
providing a technology enabled teaching-learning environment (Wi-Fi) since 2005. All courses
offered on-campus are available on Local Area Network (LAN) supplementing the classroom
teaching. GMRIT emphasizes collaborative learning between industry and academia as a means

of reinforcing its curriculum with practical experience relevant to industry needs. The Institute
constantly strives for improvement, competing with the premier institutions of national
importance. LAN based course path: http://172.30.1.222/vbc/ and Web OPAC path:

6. CONCLUSION
User response towards the survey indicates that there is so much of awareness about the
utilization of e-resources in the institute. User friendly approach towards the information needs
of the users helped in improving the services in the digital library. The ASME (American
Society for Mechanical engineers) package utilized by Mechanical staff, students and research
scholars can access e-resources from the digital library itself. There is a need for an information
literacy program to increase the usage of the e-resources packages. College Academic
committee suggested the library to use social media also as an academic resource to the users.
This library is in planning of taking the advantage of Social media to our users. User orientation
towards usage of e-resources helped in bringing the awareness among the users to maximum
utilization of e-resources procured for the purpose of academic excellence.
