2. Introduction
• A Beautiful Mind is a 2001 American biographical drama
film based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in
Economics.
• The story begins in Nash's days as a graduate student at Princeton
University. Early in the film, Nash begins to develop paranoid
schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully
watching the loss and burden his condition brings on
wife Alicia and friends.

4. schizophrenia
is a kind of psychosis, which means your mind doesn't agree with reality.
Is a chronic, severe, and disabling mental illness. It affects women and men
in the same frequency.
The illness usually starts in late adolescence or young adulthood.
5. Genetics - individuals with a family history of
schizophrenia have a higher risk of developing it
themselves. If there is no history of schizophrenia in your
family your chances of developing it (any type) are less
than 1%. However, that risk rises to 10% if one of your
parents was/is a sufferer.
6. 1. What other manifestations of the disease were
observed later?
• Auditory Hallucination (Hearing voices)
• Paranoid Delusions (Believing that someone will harm him)
• Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research
“They [the voices] may make ongoing criticisms of what you’re thinking or doing,
or make cruel comments about your real or imagined faults. Voices may also
command you to do things that can be harmful to yourself or to others.”
A patient exhibiting these auditory hallucinations may be observed talking to
themself because the person believes that the voices are actually present.
7. 2. Based on the literature, what gene or genes cause the
disorder or have been implicated as risk factors? How do these
genes cause the disorder?
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) believed that the
schizophrenia should be removed because “they did not appear to help
with providing better targeted treatment, or predicting treatment
response.“
Its hard to diagnose a person having this disorder because they appear at
late adolescence or early adulthood.
Over 2 million Americans 100,000-200,000 people ae diagnose every year
having this disorder.
8. 3. Are there environmental factors that are suspected or known
to increase the risk of having the disorder? What are they?
1. Viral infection - if the fetus (unborn baby in the womb) is exposed to a
viral infection, there is a bigger risk of developing schizophrenia.
2. Fetal malnutrition - if the fetus suffers from malnutrition during the
mother's pregnancy there is a higher risk of developing schizophrenia.
3. Drugs - the use of drugs that affect the mind or mental processes may
sometimes raise the risk of developing schizophrenia.
9. 4. What other difficulties and problems were related to the
disorder?
1. Trouble in relationships.
2. Hallucinations,
3. Delusions are beliefs that seem real to you.
10. 5. What factors aided the victim in coping with the
disorder?
1. Lovable wife
2. Hospitalization
3. Medication
4. Psychotherapy
11. 6. What other things did you learn or realize after watching
the film?
After watching this movie we should realize that we ought to be careful of our life
style, personal hygiene, etc. because some rare diseases may not come from genes but
also from environmental effect and life style of a person. And if we encounter some
people having disorder please don’t bully them instead show them some empathy.
