1. GENRE + CONVENTIONS
The genre is a romantic
drama, and the
conventions are
overcoming obstacles/
adversity, young love and
emotional highs/ lows
2. OTHER
PRODUCTS
Passengers = a journey through
space, two passengers, in
suspended animation, wake up 90
years too early when the ship
malfunctions. Jim (Chriss Pratt) and
Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) realize
they are living in luxury forever on
the ship and begin to fall for each
other. The ship crashes, it is up to
them to save the other 5,000 on
board.
Moonlight = shows the 3 main
chapters of Chiron (Trevante
Rhodes) a young black male
growing up in Miami, showing
his journey of growing up
through through the love of his
community
3. COMPARISON TO
OTHER PRODUCTS
The color scheme of
cutting between a
lighter color and a
darker in a conversation
as ours, changes color
due to the mood, in
Moonlight it changes
location and person
Also, they are in close –
ups from the side of
from down below and
never stick to one
position, which relates
to ours, because the
camera always changed.
4. PASSENGERS
• It is similar to ours in the fact that
they are doing something nice first
– celebrating a birthday and then
very quickly becomes bad
• There is a close - up shot when she
realizes what has happened which
in ours, we used all the time
• They added in some intense music
when she realizes to heighten the
moment which we did but all the
way throughout
• It also depicts them being touchy
which are to girls were doing
obviously at a different moment –
not in the same scene
5. CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
• Saskia is the main character as she is in all the
sequence, and we focus on her being nervous in the
tent because of Gracie and being nervous in the room
because of the vicar
• She is either seen on the left, which follows the same
thing as Gracie she is not moving forward, she is stuck
due to her parents. Or she is in the middle, showing
that she is the main focus of attention
• Saskia is scared of religion and only feels confident
and comfortable with Gracie due to all the laughing
and smiling – she is being her true self
6. CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
• - The conservative girl Gracie is seen as a
very forward/ main character because she
makes the first move in the tent.
• - this can further show in the film that
Gracie is the one to instigate the
relationship and is bolder
• - we wanted religion to be the fear thing,
in the relationship, as Gracie will be shown
as not religious, she takes on moving the
first move.
• - she is always on the right side of the
screen to show moving forward, as you
read left to right, she wants to move
further with Saskia
7. CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
• - our Vicar is shown as an authoritative
from the beginning due to the family’s
reaction, as we don’t see his face
immediately
• - the Vicar is also highly respected due
to the Dad’s response as he nods at him
• - we decided to use a lower shot when
he is angrily stating his lines, to show
power through status due to height
•
8. CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
- The parents are seen in the
background implying how
important they are in the film
however they are seen in close
ups with religious trinkets
- The trinkets show that they could
fit into the very stereotypical
religious couple, which they do in
regards towards their daughter
- The trinkets on the parents
perceives that they are the
dangerous ones in the film, which
is later uncovered as they do not
support her
- Their faces are behind Saskia, to
show that they have an overview
of her life, and that they want/ do
control her actions
9. CHALLENGES
• A challenge we faced was trying to show the 2 girls
as lovers for the first time instead of friends, we
decided to use lots of close - up shots to get their
reactions and to show the small progressions to a
kiss
• Even though we wanted to state that they were
lovers it was hard to show this through small
movements (hand touches, and hair tucking) we
had to add in the motion towards a kiss
• Another challenge was not repeating shots as there
wasn’t many options, we could go down we could
only do a certain movement a couple times before
it got boring.
• We mainly stuck to close ups and mid shots which
made it a little repetitive, yet as they were in a tent,
we couldn’t really shoot around it because it would
give the atmosphere away.
10. CHALLENGES
• More challenges was creating contrast between the 2
locations to show a change in atmosphere
• Before the final edit, the shot lighting was too similar as
they both were quite dark due to where we had shot the
‘lover’ scenes. We needed to bring the levels up as we
needed the exorcism scenes to be darker to show
intense mood and darkness around the situation
• We wanted the Mum and the daughter to be in similar
outfits to show that they are close, and she could
potentially support her. However, the mother and the
daughter accidentally wore the same jumper for their
scenes
• We had to work around an explanation of why she was
wearing pink in the scary situation, but we decided the
color shows innocence and being naïve, which works in
the exorcism.
11. SOCIAL GROUPS AND ISSUES
The social group we chose was obviously the LGBTQ
community because it is not shown in film as the most casual
which is how we wanted to. We didn’t want to heighten the
relationship, we just wanted to show the innocence of
exploring out of your normal realm which is what the LGBTQ
community support. Just showing young love from anyone
and making it casual because it doesn’t need to be super
heightened and fake
The social issue is the extremity of religion, not
everyone views the LGBTQ as negative in religion
the way we showed it. However, there are some
people who view it the same way as the parents,
which we made look very dark and extreme becaus
of how lovely the girl were together in the tent
12. REPRESENTATION -
CONTRAST
Camera: as there is no dialogue there are a lot of close - up
reaction shots which represent Saskia being nervous in the
exorcism and scared og her parents and what is going to
happen.
Sound: the soundtrack intensifies as the sequence does –
which represents how quickly it can go from calm to scary
Editing: the contrast in the 2 scenes with the colors – in the
lover scenes we changed it to more of a pink finish to give
such a young vibe and in the exorcism scenes they look a
lot darker because of the lighter vibe – which shows the
mood of that part
Mis en scene: the mother and the daughter are both
wearing pink jumpers to show being naïve but in different
ways – the daughter being naïve in love, and the mother
being naïve in her sexuality due to her being religious
13. THEORIES OF
REPRESENTATION
• We had the use of Barthe for
representation as the theory is enigma
codes – hidden meanings and unanswered
questions. This was with both locations
because the 2 girls background to lovers
isn’t shown and why is rebelling against
her parents and getting punished
• The other theorist was Strauss for
representation and their theory is Binary
opposition – good vs bad, which is shown
in the exorcism scene with the girl and
vicar and throughout the whole thing as it
is good shots vs bad shots.
14. ADHERED OR SUBVERTED
• It is set in the late 80’s and adhered to
that by the exorcism as that wouldn’t
be done now – it is rarer because it is
very dangerous
• It subverted stereotype as it is more
casual and for example doesn’t have
the ‘school rejects.’ As the girls have
different backgrounds (religious/
conservative) they are surprisingly
aware of the LGBTQ community
considering their families don’t like it
• It doesn’t really fit into today’s society
as they would be seen as more ‘camp’
whereas our girls were quite relaxed,
which adhered more
