As a group, you will find a toy from a country other than yours, and a toy that is not just a
foreign version of one played in your country, i.e. monopoly in Italian won’t work.
You will research the toy and present it to the class. You will find all you can about the toy
including:
The Game is called Senet. It is believed to be the oldest board game.
- It originated in ancient Egypt.
- It has been made of many things. Poorer folks played it in the Earth.
Wealthier folks had Senet made out of everything from carved boards to ebony, ivory, and gold.
- It has 30 squares laid out in three rows of ten. It also had counters. They
were determined to move by four two sided sticks.
- It is currently made by a company called Cadaco Inc. It is also being made by
museums and other game companies around the world. It can sometimes be known now as King
Tut’s Game
How is it played- You throw sticks to see how many squares are moved. If you throw one,
four, or six you get an extra turn. You can’t land on one of your own pieces. If you land on
another players pieces you switch places. If the other player has three or more pieces in a row
you can not pass them. Some Squares are safe squares. The first player with all 5 pieces off the
board wins.
- Children and Adults both play with this game. In ancient times it was
played more by wealthy adults.
- Yes There are rules to this game. The rules vary though depending on the
publisher of the game since there are no exact rules found from ancient times.
- This game was for wealthier folk in ancient times. Now it is
played by everyone.
- It dates back to around 3500 B.C. It was played by wealthier
people during these times. The poorer people played it on the earth as well though.
- The word Senet means passing. To the Egyptians the game had strong sacred
connections and was played to make sure the players passed peacefully.
