 Any device or computer program that enables other devices or programs to have functionality is referred
to as a server. A server refers to any computerized process which is used or called upon by a client in
order to share resources and distribute work. Servers can be application servers, database servers,
computing servers, web servers etc.
 Web servers are those servers that are provided by web hosting companies for storing the files of websites
in order to make websites accessible. These web hosting companies provide the necessary services and
technologies that make websites accessible over the Internet and are often termed as the “Best Website
Hosting Company”, the “Best Windows Hosting Company” or the “Top Cloud Hosting Company” when their
services are exceptional.

 There are essentially three types of servers based on their structure. These are rack servers, blade servers and
tower servers. The focus of this PPT will be on blade servers and rack servers. The major difference between
these two is that a rack server refers to an independent server that is installed in a case whereas blade servers
work with one another in one server chassis.
Types of Servers (based on their structure)
4
Rack Servers
 A rack server is a rack-mounted server. It can fit into a server rack. It is efficiently
configured to support a wide variety of requirements. It is wider and flatter and
can fit into any server rack. A rack server is very beneficial when a small number
of servers are required as it incurs low upfront cost. Hence, it is highly economical.
Moreover, a rack server aids in reducing space consumption. This is because this
type of a server can be mounted inside a rack and is designed in a way where it
can be positioned in a bay which is accomplished by stacking servers vertically one
over the other along with other devices that include SAN devices, batteries, storage
units, cooling systems, network peripherals etc. With regard to processors, RAM and
storage, rack servers are expandable but one would need to make the necessary
arrangements when it comes to space in a rack for accommodating such upgrades.

YELLOW
 Deliver powerful performance for running high-end applications.
 Consume less space and fit conveniently.
 Equipped with internal fans that make cooling easier.
 Highly efficient when more than one server is required as these do not need a huge chassis.

Whoa! That’s a big number, aren’t
you proud?
Benefits of Rack Servers
8
There are many benefits of rack servers which shall be discussed in this slide and in the next three slides. The first of
these benefits is mentioned in this slide.
Self-standing
Every rack server is equipped with the necessary hardware, which enables it to perform all the tasks that a server is
supposed to perform. This versatile server is a stand-alone server that can be used for running high-end applications.
YELLOW
 Enclosed rack servers that have locking mechanisms aid in not only organizing IT related hardware in a single
location but also prove to be an important choice for organizations that are concerned about security. A locked
rack ensures that one’s IT equipment’s physical accessibility remains under one’s control.
Increased Security
9
YELLOW
 When one’s servers are located in one place and are accessible easily, it saves time. Since all the hardware is
organized, maintenance and troubleshooting become easier and more efficient. All the devices are housed
together in a rack, which makes cable management more organized.
Better Access and Organization
10
YELLOW
 Failure Containment
 Rack servers require very less amount of effort with regard to identifying, removing and/or replacing a
malfunctioning server with another.
 Economical
 A rack server delivers computing power along with efficiency at the most cost-effective price.
Failure Containment and Economical
11
YELLOW
The main disadvantages of rack servers are mentioned below, in no particular order.
 Difficult to Maintain- In this type of an arrangement, multiple devices are stacked in racks, which makes it
harder to maintain these when the number of racks increase significantly.
 More Power Usage- The high component density of rack servers requires additional cooling systems which
results in more power consumption.
Disadvantages of Rack Servers
12
YELLOW
 A blade server is not only the latest but also the most advanced type of server that is available. It can be
referred to as a hybrid rack server. In this type of an arrangement servers exist inside a blade enclosure and
form a blade system. Blade servers are the smallest servers that are available at present. Hence, these aid
significantly in conserving space. Very few internal components are required by blade servers. This is because
multiple blade servers can be slid and fitted on a large blade chassis for efficient operation. These servers are
usually used for higher computing requirements and provide the type of architecture that aids in scaling a
higher processor density.
Blade Servers
13
YELLOW
 Reduced total power consumption. This is due to the fact that the massive chassis of blade servers enable these
to supply power to multiple servers.
 Minimal requirement of space. Blade servers not only require minimal space but also provide high processing
power.
 Promotes hot-swappable features. This makes it easier to replace a blade that is encountering problem.
 Reduced usage of individual cables for each blade chassis server. This happens because blade servers need a
single cable.
Features of Blade Servers
14
YELLOW
There are numerous benefits of blade servers, which are mentioned below.
 Simpler Load Balancing- Since blade servers have a simple infrastructure, load balancing among the servers
becomes much easier.
 Minimal Requirement of Space- Blade servers are the smallest and the most compact servers which ensures
that these require the least amount of physical space.
 Centralized Management- All the blades in a blade server can be connected through a single interface. This
renders the task of maintenance and monitoring easy.
 Reduction in Cabling- The usage of cables is next to negligible in it in comparison with rack servers.
Benefits of Blade Servers
15
YELLOW
 Expensive- Its initial configuration is expensive. Despite it being easy to upgrade a blade server, the initial
costs related to capital, configuration and its deployment can be quite high.
 HVAC Energy Costs- Blade servers are not only very powerful but have high component density. Hence,
adequate measures need to be taken to ensure that these don’t get overheated. HVAC (heating, ventilation,
and air conditioning) systems need to be managed efficiently for blade servers and often incur additional
expenses.
Disadvantage of Blade Servers

  • 3.  Any device or computer program that enables other devices or programs to have functionality is referred to as a server. A server refers to any computerized process which is used or called upon by a client in order to share resources and distribute work. Servers can be application servers, database servers, computing servers, web servers etc.  Web servers are those servers that are provided by web hosting companies for storing the files of websites in order to make websites accessible. These web hosting companies provide the necessary services and technologies that make websites accessible over the Internet and are often termed as the “Best Website Hosting Company”, the “Best Windows Hosting Company” or the “Top Cloud Hosting Company” when their services are exceptional. 3 Server
  • 4. YELLOW  There are essentially three types of servers based on their structure. These are rack servers, blade servers and tower servers. The focus of this PPT will be on blade servers and rack servers. The major difference between these two is that a rack server refers to an independent server that is installed in a case whereas blade servers work with one another in one server chassis. Types of Servers (based on their structure) 4
  • 5. Rack Servers  A rack server is a rack-mounted server. It can fit into a server rack. It is efficiently configured to support a wide variety of requirements. It is wider and flatter and can fit into any server rack. A rack server is very beneficial when a small number of servers are required as it incurs low upfront cost. Hence, it is highly economical. Moreover, a rack server aids in reducing space consumption. This is because this type of a server can be mounted inside a rack and is designed in a way where it can be positioned in a bay which is accomplished by stacking servers vertically one over the other along with other devices that include SAN devices, batteries, storage units, cooling systems, network peripherals etc. With regard to processors, RAM and storage, rack servers are expandable but one would need to make the necessary arrangements when it comes to space in a rack for accommodating such upgrades. 5
  • 6. YELLOW  Deliver powerful performance for running high-end applications.  Consume less space and fit conveniently.  Equipped with internal fans that make cooling easier.  Highly efficient when more than one server is required as these do not need a huge chassis. Features of Rack Servers 6
  • 7. 7 1-800-123 -8156 Whoa! That’s a big number, aren’t you proud?
  • 8. Benefits of Rack Servers 8 There are many benefits of rack servers which shall be discussed in this slide and in the next three slides. The first of these benefits is mentioned in this slide. Self-standing Every rack server is equipped with the necessary hardware, which enables it to perform all the tasks that a server is supposed to perform. This versatile server is a stand-alone server that can be used for running high-end applications.
  • 9. YELLOW  Enclosed rack servers that have locking mechanisms aid in not only organizing IT related hardware in a single location but also prove to be an important choice for organizations that are concerned about security. A locked rack ensures that one’s IT equipment’s physical accessibility remains under one’s control. Increased Security 9
  • 10. YELLOW  When one’s servers are located in one place and are accessible easily, it saves time. Since all the hardware is organized, maintenance and troubleshooting become easier and more efficient. All the devices are housed together in a rack, which makes cable management more organized. Better Access and Organization 10
  • 11. YELLOW  Failure Containment  Rack servers require very less amount of effort with regard to identifying, removing and/or replacing a malfunctioning server with another.  Economical  A rack server delivers computing power along with efficiency at the most cost-effective price. Failure Containment and Economical 11
  • 12. YELLOW The main disadvantages of rack servers are mentioned below, in no particular order.  Difficult to Maintain- In this type of an arrangement, multiple devices are stacked in racks, which makes it harder to maintain these when the number of racks increase significantly.  More Power Usage- The high component density of rack servers requires additional cooling systems which results in more power consumption. Disadvantages of Rack Servers 12
  • 13. YELLOW  A blade server is not only the latest but also the most advanced type of server that is available. It can be referred to as a hybrid rack server. In this type of an arrangement servers exist inside a blade enclosure and form a blade system. Blade servers are the smallest servers that are available at present. Hence, these aid significantly in conserving space. Very few internal components are required by blade servers. This is because multiple blade servers can be slid and fitted on a large blade chassis for efficient operation. These servers are usually used for higher computing requirements and provide the type of architecture that aids in scaling a higher processor density. Blade Servers 13
  • 14. YELLOW  Reduced total power consumption. This is due to the fact that the massive chassis of blade servers enable these to supply power to multiple servers.  Minimal requirement of space. Blade servers not only require minimal space but also provide high processing power.  Promotes hot-swappable features. This makes it easier to replace a blade that is encountering problem.  Reduced usage of individual cables for each blade chassis server. This happens because blade servers need a single cable. Features of Blade Servers 14
  • 15. YELLOW There are numerous benefits of blade servers, which are mentioned below.  Simpler Load Balancing- Since blade servers have a simple infrastructure, load balancing among the servers becomes much easier.  Minimal Requirement of Space- Blade servers are the smallest and the most compact servers which ensures that these require the least amount of physical space.  Centralized Management- All the blades in a blade server can be connected through a single interface. This renders the task of maintenance and monitoring easy.  Reduction in Cabling- The usage of cables is next to negligible in it in comparison with rack servers. Benefits of Blade Servers 15
  • 16. YELLOW  Expensive- Its initial configuration is expensive. Despite it being easy to upgrade a blade server, the initial costs related to capital, configuration and its deployment can be quite high.  HVAC Energy Costs- Blade servers are not only very powerful but have high component density. Hence, adequate measures need to be taken to ensure that these don’t get overheated. HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems need to be managed efficiently for blade servers and often incur additional expenses. Disadvantage of Blade Servers 16
