4. Our banner to the breeze unfold,
Its colors blue and white, so bold.
It waves above us every day
To guide our work and share our play.
(chorus) The Blue and White then raise on high.
Weâll guard our emblem âtill we die.
Oh, may it never sullied be
Or trailed in dust by you or me.
The Blue and White
The Blue and White (originally, The Blue and Gold ), 1914, lyrics by Miss Harriet Jones (English teacher), music by J. Fowler Richardson (Music Director).
5. At sports it joins the merry din
And makes our teams strive hard to win.
But when the luck deserts our game,
Weâll gather âround it just the same.
The splendor of the blue and white
Within our hearts will neâer grow light;
It holds us loyal to the end
And gives us courage to defend.
Verses 2 and 3
Each verse to be followed by the chorus.
6. A (very) little bit of Day School history!
The Day School is the descendant of several predecessors: the Wilkes-Barre Female Institute (girls), the Wilkes-Barre Institute
(girls), the Wilkes-Barre Academy (boys), and the Harry Hillman Academy (boys). In 1939 the Institute and Harry Hillman combined
as the Wilkes-Barre Day School. In 1951 the Day School became part of Wyoming Seminary.
1838 â founding of the Wilkes-Barre Female Institute which lasted until 1850. The building was on River Street.
1844 â founding of Wyoming Seminary in Kingston.
1854 â founding of the Wilkes-Barre Institute (girls). Its buildings were on Franklin St.
1878 â founding of the Wilkes-Barre Academy (boys). Its building was on Academy Street. The WBA later became the Harry
Hillman Academy (HHA - boys). Miss Bessie Atwood was the guiding force behind the HHA in the 1930s.
1896 â 1936 The WBI was under the leadership of Anna Miles Olcott.
1914 The Blue and Gold (today The Blue and White) was written.
1916 The Blue and Gold (today White) teams originated.
1926 â The WBI relocated to a new building at its present location in Forty Fort. This is the building we know and love.
1939 â The WBI joined with the HHA to become the Wilkes-Barre Day School.
1951 â The WBDS was joined with Sem as the Wyoming Seminary Day School.
13. Here we are when a bit
younger!
The dates are the end year of
our first year. For example,
Missyâs first year was 1949-
1950 when we were in
Nursery School. Clintâs was
1953-1954. Barney started in
1949 -1959 but left (1952)
and came back, 1956-1957
(6th grade).
Peter Lauderbaugh somehow
was overlooked in the
alphabetical arranging as heâs
last. He should be between
Lisa and Ginny.

Judging from the bulletin
board pictures of
Medieval churches and
cathedrals, it must be
one of Mrs. Morganâs
history classes, 7th grade.
38. Mrs. Llewellyn is
standing at rear. She
taught math, but,
judging from the
books on the desks,
this doesnât look like a
math class.
This picture was taken
on the same day as
the previous photo.

43. This is Harryâs copy of the 1958
Tatler.
Judging from his markings, itâs
clearly the Cold War issue!
(Remember that sputnik was
launched in October, 1957.)
The actual theme was
âAround the World.â

54. Remember our graduation party? It was at the Bear Creek Club and featured Chubby Checker and Bobby Rydell! Oh yeah, Scott
Garrett too. Scott, alas, was not destined for Rock and Roll greatness. Harry still has the photos they autographed.
55. Kathy and Harry both had the opportunity to meet Bobby at Chauatauqua in the
summer of 2013. Here heâs holding the autograph card from our 1959 party.
57. Postscript!
We all have memories of our Day School
teachers. Some of them remain our
favorite teachers, others, maybe not so. But
this lady over shadowed them all. If your
fathers went to the Harry Hillman Academy,
she taught them too.
The following slides relate to Miss Atwood.

Testimonial Dinner
honoring Miss Atwood

Miss Atwoodâs
tenure at the school
was from
1920 to 1962.
