Prompt
Create an academic plan of study that will explain and support
your intention to earn a Bachelor of Arts in General Studies
degree. Begin by forming an
achievable goal statement. Then, discuss your prior and planned
academic learning and how you can use it to direct your
3. academic and professional planning.
Finally, build a case for your plan of study by articulating its
value to you moving forward. Remember that this is a formal,
professional document that must be
formatted and presented in a manner appropriate for academic
and professional audiences.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
2
I. Goal Statement: In this section, you will introduce the career
and/or personal goals related to achieving your BA.GS degree.
You will do this in a brief
goal statement (one to two paragraphs). You will then develop a
SMART goal related to your academic plan of study. Remember
that your
introduction needs to establish the basis of your decisions for
your audience.
a) Concisely introduce your academic plan of study with a goal
statement that details your career and/or personal goals in a
manner
appropriate for academic and professional audiences.
b) Develop a SMART goal related to your academic plan of
study.
II. Domains of Study: In this section, you will connect your
academic learning to specific domains of study to determine the
4. value of this knowledge and
how it can be applied to your goal statement. Domains of study
refer to categories that compartmentalize different areas where
you have gained or
intend to gain knowledge, skills, and abilities. These domains
could be as broad as “critical thinking” or “technical writing,”
or they could be as
specific as “the history of Massachusetts as a colony.”
a) Identify three domains that define any prior or planned
academic learning, and name three courses that support each
domain. For instance,
was some of your previous learning focused on communication
or critical thinking? Which courses have you taken that align
with that
domain?
b) Explain how any prior or planned academic learning relates
to your strengths and weaknesses. Be sure to refer to the
specific domains you
are developing. Support your response using research.
c) Explain how any prior or planned academic learning connects
to your goal statement and academic plan of study. Be sure to
address why this
knowledge is valuable to your goals and how will it help you
plan your future.
III. Concentration: To complete this section, you will need to
choose a concentration in the general studies program using the
provided list and then
research what knowledge, skills, and abilities you will need to
complete this concentration.
a) Defend the concentration you have chosen based on how it
5. will help you achieve your personal or professional goals. Be
sure to reference
the knowledge you plan to gain in the concentration.
b) Back up your assertions with research that supports your
concentration choice. For instance, you might research the
desired skills and
abilities needed for jobs in industries related to your
concentration.
IV. Coursework: In this section, you will think about your
domains of study and your concentration in relation to your
goal, and you will plan out the
coursework for your entire degree program. This should be a
specific and detailed outline of the number of credits needed,
the courses needed at
each level (200-level, 300-level, etc.), the courses you have
already completed, and so on.
a) Provide an organized list of your degree requirements and
your completed and planned coursework. Be sure to categorize
courses by
domains of study and your concentration where appropriate.
b) Provide a brief annotation (one to two sentences) of each
listed course, illustrating why the course is applicable to your
personal or
professional goals.

3535&returnto=1734
6. 3
V. Academic Rationale: In this section, you will articulate the
value of the BA.GS degree using research and specific examples
to illustrate the benefits of
completing this degree plan.
a) Discuss the larger relevance of the general studies degree to
achieving your goals. Be sure to address the benefits of your
general studies
degree and the value of a diverse education to achieving your
future goals.
b) Incorporate research (e.g., course resources, scholarly
articles, networking sites, webinar opportunities) that will
support you in achieving
your goals.
VI. Articulation and Presentation: Your academic plan of study
will be assessed on professional formatting and your use of
fundamental writing skills. Be
sure that your plan of study:
a) Has no major errors related to citations, grammar, spelling,
or syntax
b) Is organized in a professional and easy-to-read format

Strengths
As aforementioned in my previous milestones, I am a strong
headed individual with exceptionally good communication skills
which developed during my experiences with people during my
summer job, and that exposure has helped me to connect and
20. relate with people to develop understanding. I believe, my open
behavior and connectivity with people will help me in learning
my selected domains efficiently for an effective outcome.
My ability to observe and understand people comes from my
quality of being a good listener, which helps me to reach the
deep roots of people and grasp the real issue, which is the
highly helpful step that leads me to help them effectively. I
believe this quality and ability will help me in pursuing my
goal.
In addition to that, I have worked as the group leader with a
number of teams in various school and college projects, and this
role has helped me to lead the team by expanding
communication and understanding, as well as I have worked
under my seniors to learn from them which helped me to accept
someone’s authority and work under leadership with team spirit.
As I have been at both places, that of a leader and of a follower,
I believe it will prove to be my strength is learning efficiently
in my chosen concentration and will improve my competent
working.
One of my major responsibilities as a team leader was to
accommodate my team members according to their area of
expertise to obtain maximum productivity and to manage the
financial resources so that we don’t run out of them in mid of
project. This experience in human and finance resource
management will be my strength in learning further about
leadership and management, and in developing stronger skills to
achieve my goal.
Weakness
Because of my ability to connect with people on deeper level, I
am able to understand their true situation and I am able to
conceive their pain and agony, but I lack the skills to conceal
my expressions in front of people which can be judged and give
a wrong expression, hence, I need to learn in that aspect during
my degree program to improve my working efficiency and the
productivity and effectiveness of my activity.
In regard to aforementioned lack of my abilities and skills, I
21. feel people’s situation on a deeper level as well, and the rule
goes, excessive connectivity with the object can cloud one’s
judgment and decisions. It has been the case with me where I
have caused problems for myself in addition to imperfect
decision making and judgment of people. Hence, clouding my
judgments and intuitions because of excessive connectivity with
people is my another major weakness which I would like to
overcome while learning further as powerful decision-making
ability is one of the most basic and important tools in Human
Resource Management, where a person has to judge every
individual’s abilities, skills and qualities to improve their
efficient working and improved outcome. Making the right
decision is important for protecting one’s self and the
associated company for successful outcomes and progression,
which will, in turn, improve my competency as well.
Another important skill which makes the basis of person’s
working ability and competency stronger is the knowledge and
experience of basic techniques in relation to their statistical
analysis to calculate out a result with is most predictable and
correct to make the right decision. I would like to improve
myself in this criteria as well which I have always deemed as
my lacking part.
Domains
Keeping in mind my strengths and weaknesses that I have
mentioned above, it is clear that I excel in communication skills
and in dealing with people, and I would learn more if I choose
domains that articulate most with my knowledge, skills, and
abilities. Hence, my first chosen domain is Psychology, as my
ability to connect with people and develop an understanding of
their situation and the ability to provide condolence and support
to them by listening to their problems would prove to be my
strength here. My second and third chosen domains are Human
Resource Management and Organizational Leadership
respectively, in which I will flourish because of my leadership
qualities and ability to follow leads, and in addition to that,
22. these two domains will help me learn and improve my
management and decision-making insufficiencies that will help
me in improving my competency.
Courses
Psychology domain: My preferred courses are PSY-108
Introduction to Psychology, PSY-223 Statistics for Psychology
and PSY-224 Scientific Investigations as they articulate best
with my abstract thinking ability and communication skills.
Human Resource Management Domain: My preferred courses
are OL-211 Human Resource Management, OL-215 Introduction
to Management and OL-342 Organizational Behavior which will
not only improve the qualities like ability to lead and
communication skills that I already have to some extent but will
also flourish the points in which I am weak such as management
of human resources without clouded judgement.
Organizational Leadership Domain: My preferred courses are
OL-215 Principles of management, OL-328 Leadership, and OL-
322 Managing Organizational Change. The main reason for
choosing these courses is that they will help me learn leadership
skills and tools which are most needed in today’s complex
market, which include the ability to survive and grow while
managing conflicts to produce constantly improving results.

Concentration
Labor is among the very important factors that determine the
success of any company and therefore, that makes human
resource management a very important field of study. Typically,
effective management of human resources is the core to any
business strategy and because of this, there has been an
exponential increase in the demand for human resource
personnel (Aswathappa, 2013. I prefer taking this course as my
concentration since the combination of practice, theory, and
professional accreditation will make sure that the program gives
me the required skills and knowledge needed in pursuing a
successful career in human resource management. The program
will give me an opportunity to evaluate human resource
management practices and issues from a wide range of
organizational context and give me the ability to apply them in
the practical world of business.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
As an individual, I have great human skills, as I am able to
relate well with people. I do manage doing this by being a good
listener and always trying to bring out the best in people. In my
life, I have managed to be the group leader of various school
projects and this role has greatly exposed me to different
personalities. When one is a group leader, he or she is in a
position of managing different factors and aspects apart from
the personalities of the group members. One of the main
24. responsibilities that I had, as a group leader that I believe will
be crucial in my human resource management course is the
delegation and assigning of duties. I delegated as well as
assigned duties in accordance to the competence of my group
members. Apart from this, I also played a significant role in
ensuring that the teams I headed shared the same vision,
mission, and goals. It is important to note that as a manager of
human capital, one should ensure that every individual aligns
his or her objectives to that of the organization (Medina, 2006.
Managing disputes among team members gives me an edge in
creating good public relations. As a human resource
management student or professional, one should have the
needed skills of creating a positive internal and external
environment. Sound working environments ensure that the
workers feel contented and work towards achieving the common
goal of the organization. While heading my teams, I ensured
that none of the team members was overwhelmed by his or her
own duties. I am a fair individual and I always make a point of
looking after the welfare of other people. I believe that through
sound human resource management, a person should be in a
position of taking care of the employees since they are a very
important part of the organization. Noe, et al (2006) posit that
employees are very important in any organization and that they
always come first. Not catering to the needs of employees leads
to unfortunate outcomes like industrial actions that end up
tarnishing the name of the organization.
Courses
The courses that I intend to take in order to accomplish my goal
are human resource management, employee, and labor
relationship and total rewards. Going through these three
courses will give me great insight with regards to human
resource management. They will give me the knowledge on how
to handle different issues that come with managing employees
and especially settling disputes as well as encouraging positive
25. work relationships. In addition, through these courses, I will
also know when and how to appreciate the employees since this
is one of the factors that help organizations when motivating
their staff. Typically, I feel that taking this course will be
appropriate in my career life as most of its aspects are aligned
with my knowledge, skills, and personal abilities.

Bachelor of Arts in General Studies SMART Goal
In the period that I have been a Bachelor of Arts in
General Studies student I have been able to build my skills in
many different area and I am glad that I am not conformed to
just a single area of specialty. This course has enabled me to
challenge, enhance, and develop the knowledge I had in various
26. areas. I intend to continue to develop my knowledge especially
on intercultural issues that will help to improve mu social and
communication skills. Therefore, I have developed a personal
SMART goal that is in line with what I have learned throughout
the course and what I intend to achieve after the completion of
the course.
My goal is to improve my intercultural competency through a 6-
month educational program and self-exploration led by the New
Hampshire Humanities Organization that is meant to lead to the
launch of a new intercultural initiative that will include 100
employees.
There are various strategies that I will use to accomplish my
goal. First I will send in my application to the New Hampshire
Humanities Organization to be a member of the intercultural
educational program that will commence in June, 2017. I will
later make sure that I attend the program throughout the time
period that it will be continuing so that I can achieve my goal of
improving my intercultural skills. Lastly, I will always practice
the intercultural skills I learn on the program in my day-to-day
activities to ensure that my goal of improving my skills s
achieved. The only resources I will need to achieve this goal is
the financial fee that is paid by all the attendees of the program
and my time.
I will measure the achievement of my goal through my ability to
get into the program and make it as part of the 100 employees
who will be required for the intercultural program. Through
hard work and efficiency I will be able to convince the
organization to pick me as one of the employees for the
intercultural program. I will also measure my achievement of
this goal through my performance in the tests that will be taken
in the intercultural program. Lastly I will gauge my ability to
interact with people from various cultural backgrounds before
and after the program to determine my progress.
This goal is relevant in that it will help to improve my
intercultural competence which is important for every leader.
We encounter people from various cultural backgrounds in both
27. the personal and the professional lives almost every day.
Having cultural competence is important as it helps one to have
better communication skills when they interact with people from
a culture that is different from theirs. This program helps a
person to identify the different features of various cultures and
the distinct aspects that make all people different. Therefore,
with this knowledge they can be able to understand the reasons
why people behave as they do and understand the most
appropriate ways to respond to situations that involve cultural
conflicts. These skills are important to be not only personally
but also professionally.
The time frame for this goal is the six months within which the
program will be conducted. I will work hard to ensure that
within this short period of time I am able to learn as much as I
can about the various cultures in the United States and I am able
to apply my knowledge in my everyday life. At the end of the
six months I should be able to understand cultures and
demonstrate improved communication skills with people from
various cultures.
