Population expectations
Elderly population
Other special populations
Possible funding
scenarios
continuing increase in need for
community-based education and
services -
3. 5to10YearOutlook:
futureof
Community-
BasedServices
Changes for the future include:
Technological Advances
Higher elderly population as baby boomers continue to
age
More diverse population including immigration,
doubling of Asian and Hispanic population
Increase in other special populations, such as
mentally/physically challenged individuals, LGBT
populations will need to be considered in community-
based educational planning
4. 5to10YearOutlook:
futureof
Community-
BasedEducation
Changes for the future include:
Increasing emphasis on lifelong learning
Shorter adult educational programs and courses •
More emphasis on computer based learning •
Technological advances
Eliminating the “Digital Divide” will be focused on to
bridge the gap so all individuals can obtain access to
technology and the Internet
Programs, such as Comcast’s Internet Essentials, offer
low-income families Web access for low cost
Libraries provide Internet access for free
Many grants offer Internet access devices
5. Community-
BasedEducation
Trends
Expansion of The Community Concept Through Global
Interconnectivity
The concept of community has been globalized
Community is no longer just a locality concept, but
anyone that is connected through the Web
Time and space no longer are barriers to educational
availability
Community Higher Education institutions will have to
keep maintaining high standards in the future to
maintain their validity…especially for distance
education.
6. Community-
BasedEducation
Trends
Advancements in curriculum and delivery methods
with a surge in adult education for personal
development and continued education
“Many adults are having to set their sights on
obtaining sufficient skills to be more marketable for
employment (Petty, 2014).”
As the job market continues to develop and change
need for adequate and accessible education for adults
increase
Making adult education accessible and affordable will
continue to be a focus in order to keep up with the
global trends for employment and marketability
Program development will continue in the areas
focused on career development, literacy, orientation
and goal setting (Petty, 2014).
7. Funding5-10
YearOutlook
“Governments should be investing 6% of their
education budgets on adult education and half of that
should go to basic literacy (Archer, 2007).”
Public-Private Sector Collaborations
Can not depend entirely on government funding
mutually beneficial relationships in seeking funding
and resources such as educational grants
Distance education “has the strong potential to bring
learning to far more people in the world, at lower costs
for a student hour of learning than at present (Bork,
2001).”
Funding community-based programs and educational
institutions will come from private, federal, state and
other local funding sources
8. FundingTrends
The U.S. will have to turn to alternative funding options
for community-based programs and education because of
the current economic strains
Trend will continue over the next 5 to 10 years, especially
with increased financial strain on government programs
from baby boomers
Distance education programs could begin to lean on
community based programs for support for lower income
students
Institutions of education may need to rely more heavily
on sponsorships and state funding as opposed to federal
funding.
Community services for older individuals will have a
bigger focus on self sufficiency and putting funding away
for retirement as the amount of federal funding is
expected to decrease
9. Population
Trends
Population Trends: Aging The “Baby Boomer”
generation is the largest in terms of size and
percentage of the US population By 2030, the 65+
population will double to 71.5 million and by 2050 will
grow to 86.7 million
The trend is toward older Americans remaining in the
work force longer than their predecessors
Younger seniors are more techno-savvy and likely to
seek regular retraining to meet professional and
personal objectives
They will likely seek both traditional educational
vehicles, such as senior centers and brick & mortar
educational institutions, but also distance learning
(online) alternatives
