recirculated in the atmosphere and collects, which has led to the destruction of the Ozone layer of

Many claim that global warming is obvious and that all arguments against global warming fall. The
problem is that what is "obvious" often isn't true. "A gradual increase in the overall temperature of

The question then arises, if a plan of action is going to be taken, which would be the wisest? And
the answer depends directly on the amount of certainty one has about the effects of global warming.
At one end of the spectrum is the belief that a modest tax on carbon–based fuel should be employed.
At the other end is the Green peace camp which wants an exorbitant tax on such fuels. In the
middle are those which want a tax on such fuels which would be adjusted according to a timetable

What is global warming? As defined by Encarta Dictionary it is an increase in the world's
temperatures, believed to be caused in part by greenhouse gases. Holli Riebeek on NASA's Earth
Observatory website describes it like this: "Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth's
average surface temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases." She states,
"surface temperatures have risen on average .6 – .9 degrees" in the past hundred years and that, "the
rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years." She goes a step further by
boldly declaring that the gases are the direct result of "people burning fossil fuels" (Riebeek).

Improved nutrition and "improvements in public health from the scientific revolution drastically
reduced the death rates and increased live birth rates" (Marten). Since that time, the population has
increased substantially. Below is a chart from Human Ecology that depicts the population growth
over a 200–year span. With the increase in population came an increase in deforestation for shelter
and home heating. The incomplete burning of fossil fuels produces and releases carbon monoxide
into the Earth's atmosphere. (Wang–lecture notes) It stands to reason that man has left an impact on
his environment, and the main element of that impact comes in the form of air pollution. The
components of air pollution are nitrogen, smog, particulates, acid rain, and carbon monoxide

Global climate change, most commonly referred to as global warming, is a worldwide problem
facing our environment. Global climate change is simply a rise or fall in Earth's temperature over a
period of time. Although this problem has natural causes, the true detriments come from humans and

It is also thought to be possible that the movement of continents changed the temperature of the land,
the air, and the oceans (encyclopedia of science). These environmental shifts have definitely played a
part in atmospheric changes. More recently, however, humans have had a much greater effect on the
earth. This all began in the late 18th century, when the Industrial Revolution was in bloom and there
was more need for factories and equipment. The smog and pollution coming from these buildings
was visible to all, and the damages were huge. This altered the composition of the earth's atmosphere
by creating much more carbon dioxide, and quickly had an effect on the global climate (epa.gov).

time included coal, oil, petroleum, and natural gas which all are carbon–rich and when burned the

Global Warming, aside from pollution is one of scientists biggest concerns. Global Warming is
caused by the Greenhouse effect. There are 4 steps in the Greenhouse effect process. The first is,
sunlight radiates from the sun, through space, to the Earth's atmosphere. The second is, sunlight
enters the atmosphere and hits the Earth. Some of that sunlight turns into heat energy in the form of
infrared light. Surrounding air and land, which in turn makes the heat warm, absorbs the heat. Third,
the greenhouse gases trap infrared rays that is remitted into the atmosphere. Finally, the gas then

Another event that would occur from global warming is the drastic rise in sea level. As the Earth
warms up, the polar ice caps will start to melt. This would put immense amounts of water into the
Earth's oceans. All cities along all the coasts would be flooded from the rise in sea level. This
would cause people to move inland, and with more people inland, it would cause a shortage of
space in some areas. With the coastal cities under water, this would cause a great economic strain on
the rest of the cities throughout the world. Global Warming would also cause extreme weather.
Today, action is occurring at every level to reduce, to avoid, and to better understand the risks that
are associated with global warming. On a national level, the U.S. Global Change Research Program
(USGCRP) coordinates the world's most extensive research effort on global warming. In addition,
the Clinton Administration is actively helping to address the challenge of global warming while, at
the same time, strengthening the economy.
On a global level, countries around the world have expressed a firm commitment to strengthening
international responses to the risks of climate change. The U.S. is working to strengthen
international action and broaden the participation from people around the world.
