Essay on House of the Vettii
House of the Vettii
The House of the Vettii belonged to two freedmen, Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius
Restitutus, who amassed a fortune through a flourishing business. The House of the Vettii is not
unusually large for the time or social standing of its owners, but it is obvious that the Vettii were
affluent Pompeian citizens and the house compares to the other large, lavish houses found in
Pompeii. (Mau, 1899: 315) Excavated in the late 19th century, the house is most notable for its
remarkably well–preserved frescoes, beautiful garden and large triclinium. The rooms included in
the house and the decoration in the various rooms reflect trends in Roman domestic architecture and
art in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another smaller atrium can be accessed through a doorway on the right of the primary atrium. This
atrium contains the house's lararium, or a shrine to the family's Lares. This lararium depicts the
Genius of the household making a sacrifice and surrounded by two Lares. Underneath is a large
snake, a symbol of beneficence and prosperity. (Guzzo, 1998: 60) In all houses of a higher standing
there was an altar dedicated to the Lares and each family was placed under the protection of its own
Lares. Neighborhoods probably had Lares as well, which looked over all of the households. "There
were also those which presided over the aggregate destiny, no longer of such and such a financier or
merchant, but of Pompeii as a whole; their temple was therefore situated at the hub of the city's
activity, the Forum, between the Macellum and the Temple of Vespasian," wrote Marcel Brion,
explaining the rising significance of the cult. (Brion, 1960: 88) The lararium in the atrium of the
House of the Vettii is a well–preserved example of the household shrines.
The second atrium is also closely associated with the

Ekko Dialectical Journal
After he opened the grand doors to the courtyard, Ekko was traumatized by the sight of his friends
and family being held hostage by the Noxian soldiers. "Sacrifice your blade to me if you want to
keep your friends in one piece," demanded Darius, the Noxian war commander, as he pressed the
edge of his enormous axe against Jinx's neck. Intimidated by Darius's threat, Ekko readied himself
to dive into danger. He reached into his pocket to take out a pair of googles that belonged to his
close friend, Vi, before she became an example of those who challenged the Noxian Empire. The
relic constantly reminded Ekko of the pact that they established to bring peace to Zaun from Noxus
with as little innocent casualties as possible. He believed that her ... Show more content on

Astonished by the unexpected fatality, Ekko leapt out of his brawl to examine the stained axe in the
grasp of Darius's hand. "Some things you can't control Ekko, like the death of your despicable
friends against my mighty strength," Darius exclaimed as he proudly propped his weapon onto his
shoulder while the constant pinging of blood falling from the blade of the axe and hitting the
pavement resonated throughout the courtyard. "Yeah Darius, you're right, I can't control some
things. But I can control how I change the future," said Ekko. Although he was aggravated by the
loss of Jinx, Ekko attempted to keep a confident expression to prove to Darius that he will only get
stronger the more he losses. Ekko took off Vi's goggles and clenched them in his hand while
thinking about how he couldn't control the loss of an innocent soul of his friend, this time. Ekko
grabbed the dial on his blade and twisted it counterclockwise. As the chrono–energy coursed around
him, Ekko watched as the life of Jinx rushed back into her, as each of the Noxian soldiers flew back
into the murderous positions, as he walked away from the courtyard, and as the grand doors closed

Case Study: Desert Shadow Middle School
At Desert Shadow Middle School, a few improvements need to be managed by the student body.
One of the first improvements is a problem with the school's building itself which will be explained
as you read further on. Another change is the courtyard area, it is open and kind of messy. This is
only the beginning of this list of things that need to change around here
The first and foremost important improvement is the schools storage space. One thing that someone
might notice when they get a tour of the school is that there are no lockers. Lockers can be very
useful when people are going up in grades like junior high and high school. As kids get older, the
curriculum gets harder which means giant textbooks, huge binders and a ton of papers. At

Similarities Between The Hearst Castle And The Topakapi...
Title That I Haven't Figured Out Yet
The drastic difference in time periods between the Hearst Castle and the Topakapi Palace leads to
the differentiation in materiality and function, but the similarities of both the structures come
together with the grandiosity of the project and the lasting effect of the architecture. While the
Hearst Castle was initially built just to accommodate the Hearst family, the Topakapi palace was
built for Mehmed II and his dynasty. After a long line of collaboration with the Hearst family, Julia
Morgan was assigned to design a space for William Randolph Hearst in San Simeon because he was
"tired of going up and camping" and wanted "something that would be more comfortable".[1]
Morgan began construction in 1919, and started with guest houses, since Hearst put emphasis on the
idea of having his family and friends over. Additionally, Morgan partially based her design on the
tower of the church at Ronda in Southern Spain, a favorite site of Hearst. The California location
gave Morgan and Hearst the excuse to resemble and mimic the renaissance style of Southern Spain.
Controversy, the Topakapi Palace was originally built in 1465 by the Sultan Mehmed II and his
reign. The Topakapi Palace was a center for administration, education and most importantly, to
accommodate the Sultan. Aspects of religion and spirituality were highly active through the site and
the rich diversity of Islamic architecture was prevalent throughout the space. Despite the

social reasons, but other individuals use it for an outer connection through social media and video

Aztec Architecture Description
The history of Andalucía ranges from shifts in landownership over a span of many years. Located in
the southwestern part of Spain, Andalucía is comprises of the Iberian Peninsula. Land was being
conquered and re–conquered over the years. With the change in control of the land, palaces were
being constructed for the royalty. The Alhambra was constructed during the time of the Nasrid
dynasty. Located in what is now Granada, the Alhambra stretches across one full mile. It is one of
the most primary examples of Islamic architecture in the world, forming a fortress and a palace at
the same time.
Before construction of the Alhambra, land control shifted. In 550 BC the Carthaginians conquered
the area and named Elybirge. Early Iberian settlements inhabited the waterfront area by the Darro
River and expanded. In the 6th century the Visigoths took control until the Moors took control in the
8th century. The area would continue to change ownership within coming centuries, from the
Carthaginians to the Romans to the Visigoths, until Moorish civilizations would found the city we
now know as Granada. By the year 711 BC, the Muslim Empire began to overtake most of Spain.

Ancient Greeks landscape design
The Greeks had the characteristics of harmony with nature, so the ancient Greek terrain and
landscape design to achieve relief, its planning and composition of the structure is quite free. The
Greeks learned to combine urban construction with natural landscape harmony and complement
each other. Gardens and parks are similar to living organisms that are closely related to the natural
environment and humans. Metropolis, theaters, forums, squares, seem to evolve from nature, with
the surrounding landscape.
In the ancient Greek landscape construction, strict symmetry mainly. Alleyways and parks are
decorated with fountains, pillars, vases and sculptures. The park has its origins here. In the garden,
the Greeks widely used cypress trees, fir trees, oaks, sycamore trees, palm trees, olive trees and
other trees, decorative temples and their homes. Here also built a ladder of the garden, where the
fountain arranged, planted flowers and trees.
The Greeks advocated rational dialogue. Specially designed philosophical gardens in order to carry
out philosophical dialogue. On the terrace there was an upright, wide alley, a space for sports,
statues, vases and fountains.
The geometric shape of the gardening of the ancient world turned into a blooming era for the

the middle of the structure is a small square semi enclosed courtyard. Utilizing that courtyard, my
favorite place on the whole campus, I will conduct an autoethnography. In my autoethnography I
will analyze what about the courtyard I love so much and what those things convey about my
relationship with myself and others as well as my position within society. Autoethnographies
combine elements of both autobiographies and ethnographies. Specifically, autoethnographies are
academic essays that are introspective and narrative–oriented looks at the self, much like
autobiographies and memoirs. However, autoethnographies are set apart from autobiographies and
journals in that they join that introspection with ethnographic research methods concerned with
connections between community and the self. Due to their unique nature, ethnographies are
beneficial in enhancing cultural understanding of the connections between groups and individuals,
as well as the self; and have the potential ability to transform the self and others through the cross–
cultural building of bonds and understanding (Chang 2007). Using public and locations can be a
helpful tool in self insight, as they encompass a specific discourse (Thomas 1987). The authors

Analysis Of Elegy Written In A Country Courtyard
The poem "Elegy Written in a Country Courtyard" is delving into the them of death and the mind
and thought of the speaker of the poem. The poem takes place in a country courtyard and describes
the setting and other aspects of the cemetery near the courtyard. By looking at Thomas Gray's use of
metaphors and alliterations to different aspects of the theme, we see that Thomas Gray focuses
heavily on the themes of death and the simplicity of country life. He makes it a point to make the
reader understand multiple times in his poem about death and how it will come for even the reader.
He also goes into detail about how the life of country people are also a lot simpler and that they
could have been people of high importance, but they were never given the same chances. In this
poem, there is the constant notion that the author, Thomas Gray, is portraying the serenity of the
courtyard and cemetery, but also the critical theme of darkness and death. The author basically
writes his own elegy by the end of the poem. There is this theme through out the setting of the play
and also through the way the speaker describes certain aspects of Death and how each person has to
die eventually. The play starts off with the speaker walking in the courtyard and through the
cemetery, looking at all the tombstones and the bareness of each. They are not expensive, well
carved pieces that are sometimes thought of in other cemeteries. The significance being that the

The Courtyards: Typology In Architecture
ABSTRACT
The 'Courtyard' typology has existed for thousands of years in our country and can be traced back to
the Indus valley civilization. Traditionally used as a central space between houses/rooms owned by
individual families, courtyards served as the focal point of a settlement and strengthened interior
relationships while keeping the outside separate; it served as a protective barrier against the climate,
enemies, animals and so encouraged social interactions and became an important interface for all
communal activities.
As one of the most primeval typology in architecture, courtyards have been seen in all types of
buildings, be it commercial, residential, institutional, recreational or industrial; however, they have
been most prominent in residential dwellings. They serve as source of air flow, illumination and
provide thermal comfort to a residence by acting as a heat radiator in summers and absorber in
winters.
A courtyard traditionally served as a place for family gathering and living, a comfortable and cool
place for sleeping during the hot summers, a safe area for the children to play, a ... Show more

This typology has existed for over thousands of years now and the earliest courtyards discovered
can be traced back to 6500 BC in India and China. Before courtyards, open fires were kept burning
in a central place within a home, with only a small hole in the ceiling above to allow smoke to
escape. Over time, these small openings were enlarged and ultimately led to the development of the
centralized open courtyard we understand today. Traditionally, this typology was designed in an
attempt to protect oneself against the harsh changing climate, enemies and animals; and to
successfully bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor spaces by creating outdoor enclosures that
offer environmental advantages and privacy, spaces that both – protect and expose at the same

Safe, and dry, surrounded by wiggly bodies that are warm and soft and falling over each other to

The Importance Of Architecture And Architecture
Introduction
In the Ottoman period, a new art direction was appeared and spectaculars perspectives were born.
Due to the expansion of territories by the Ottoman Empire, several sciences, fields and theories
were developed. One of these fields was architecture; the Ottomans constructed several public
buildings and edifices were shared the perfection in structure and in aesthetic value. The mosques
are the most influenced edifices in this period because the Ottomans practiced Islam, besides the
increasing in Muslim population and the annexation of new lands to the Ottoman Empire, the
construction of mosques was required. Another essential factor in the development of the mosques
architecture is a thriving economy. The Ottomans constructed the buildings with luxurious
architectures such as fenestrations spreading over the shaft of the dome to reflect the glory of
exterior of the mosques. We can conclude that the construction method, in the Ottoman period, is
influenced by the Ottoman culture, the Islamic regulations called Shariah and several issues such as
climate and materials used in building. Also, we can see the effect of byzantine architecture on the
Ottoman buildings.
However, several innovative contributors appeared in the Ottoman period such as Sinan (figure 1),
he is genius in art and architecture and he constructed approximately 400 buildings. Sinan affected
the Ottoman archeticture in a direct way by introducing new ideas; his works have aesthetic value

Essay on Catal Huyuk was a Civilization
Catal Huyuk was a Civilization
According to archaeologist in order to be defined as a civilization certain criteria must be met. Early
archaeologists believed in order to be considered a civilization a society must have cultural
superiority, which meant they must have the ability to read and write. If this was the sole criteria
used to judge if a society was labeled a civilization, then you could say the Inca of South America,
who constructed cities on top of mountains and had a complex system of irrigation canals, were not
one because they did not have a system for reading or writing. Modern archaeologists now think of
civilization as not better but different. The modern definition of civilization consists of the
development of cities, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is often seen in ax heads and maces. Obsidian mirrors are made in the same grounding process.
Bone needles used for stitching clothes were also found. My point with identifying all these
different methods of making tools is that it is highly unlikely that each and every household had the
skills to do all these functions. There must have been class levels in this society and since there
wasn't any sign of currency they must have used some sort of bartering system attain these services.
Like a hunter going to get his ax re–sharpened and paying the craftsmen with some game that he has
killed.
The clay balls mentioned during class were very technologically advanced for the time. These clay
balls were used in all sorts of ways. For instance after being heated they could be used for bringing
water to a boil quickly and the clay balls could also be used in cooking meat. The clay balls are
placed inside the meat buried and as the clay balls slowly cool the meat cooks. The final use for the
clay balls that was mentioned during class was for heating a section of the house. Since the only
opening on the roof was over the oven it would be very dangerous to have an open fire near the
beds, which the residents of Catal Huyuk probably had to learn the hard way. That's why the clay
balls were so handy to have all they did was radiate heat.
It appears that Catal Huyuk was a

Politics and Economics of Bamako
Within the complex political and economic networks present in Bamako, the capital of Mali,
Sissako explores the modes and systems of communication present between the local population
and a wider Western authority. The discourse of communication undertaken in Bamako (2006) is
conveyed as unbalanced and restricted. Communication comes to embody and represent the
contrasts between Western economics and power and those present in Mali. The local population are
aware of and hear the court proceedings but are fundamentally unable to act upon this by way of
influence and change. Throughout this essay I will focus on Sissako's use of silence as a narrative
agent and explore the limited and one way stream of communication portrayed. The documentary
style of filmmaking helps the audience to actively engage with the film and this relationship
encourages the audience to question their understandings of communication in specific spatial and
temporal situations. Whilst Sissako recognises and demonstrates this singular line of communication
the potential for dual communication can also be inferred. I shall use Maigaurd's...to thread my
ideas together.
One of the ways in which Abderrahmane Sissako highlights the one way system of communication
from the West to Africa is by positioning the audience on both the inside and the outside of the
courtyard, "the to–and–fro movements though the courtyard door and matched by the sounds and
silences of the evidence being given in the courtyard"

Fifth Moon Observation
On the First Day of the Fifth Moon, denizens all around the castle were startled when the usually
calm home was disrupted by loud noises and various colors of light within the sky. The sudden
commotion caused people to depart what activities they had been doing to travel where the
disturbance was the loudest. Inside the Gate Courtyard, denizens and the Royal Army stood,
watching and waiting for something to reveal itself as the reason behind the disquietude of the sky.
Just as they were to move for an exit, green and purple lights zoomed through the sky and landed in
the courtyard with a boom.
Out of curiosity, the group quickly turned to see what invaded their home and upon entering the
courtyard, they came face to face with an unusual cylindrical structure that appeared to have been
burned. Attached to the scorched construct was a tiny harness, the Royal Army examined the two
items, but were unable to get any answers. As they were investigating, another BOOM appeared in
the Inner Bailey in, which caused the Army to pause and rush eastward. Ser Vaden and seras

An Enclosed Area Surrounded By Buildings
Courtyard, an enclosed area surrounded by buildings, is an open sky space that both creates a sense
of privacy and promotes a form of gathering for various purposes. Through centuries of evolvement

may wonder, when and where did courtyard emerge? How and why have it made its mark on
architectural history? Dating back to ca. 6000 BC, when courtyard made its first appearance in
Jordan Valley, between Israel and the West Bank, courts have become widely used in Islamic
regions especially in the mosques. Fifty centuries later, at a distant location on earth, a distinct type

accomplish the organization goals. This is where a mission statement becomes useful. A mission

accountability of the company to itself, and to the communities where they have a presence.
Especially when a business is as large and far reaching as Marriott, they have a responsibility to
give back and help to improve society. It is also believed that by engaging in socially responsible
activities, the company will improve its image and increase profit. Marriott has done a great job of
participating in a diversified collection of charitable initiatives, events, and organizations. Their
main area of focus has been the environment because that is where their business has the most
impact. They have given and raised money for the preservation of 1.4 million acres of rainforest in

Factors to Consider when Decorating a Student Union
Students unions need to consider color longevity and utilize colors that are neutral on fixed
architectural structures and elements. Therefor, décor is critical aspect that involves the use of color
combinations and materials whether building or furniture. Functionality of a union should be a
necessary feature of the plan. The building design should have features of practicability and artistic
beauty at the same time by keeping the design simple and sifisticated. That will help the students,
espeacilly in the busy time, to move easily and quickly without destroying the university's property
as well as enjoying the beauty of the place. Therefore, the best décor for a student union building
incorporates building materials and furnishings while considering with the main function of the
building in mind (McVitty, 2009).
In practical terms, the colors of the walls should match the furniture's in ways that are inviting and
nice to the students. For example, brown chairs would work well with grey tables in a room with
grey walls. The walls in such a room should also not be entirely grey. In such a case, a strip of light
or pale green in the middle of the wall breaks the monotony of gray color. Some walls should appear
darker than others to create a sense of differentiation did. To complement the pale green strip on the
walls, a potted plant could be placed somewhere in the room. The combinations of colors and the

No matter what floor of the museum I am on or what piece of artwork I am looking at, I always

courtyard was opened in 1903. It contains artwork, is a piece of artwork itself, and is a sanctuary in
the bustling city. From the first time I visited the Gardner Museum when I was eight years old, I was
captivated by the immense sense of peacefulness and pure delight that overcame me when the

The Importance Of Commercial Buildings In The Ottoman Empire
Secondly, commercial buildings were so popular in Cairo because it was already a major trading
point for the Ottoman Empire. The different type of commercial buildings were wikalas, khans,
qaisariyas, suqs, and funduqs. Ismail explains that these type of buildings existed since the
Mameluke Empire period, but they were kept being built during the Ottoman Empire, with some
minor changes.
The wikalas were buildings located within the city walls and had a design that had shops on the
ground floor that faced onto courtyards and a rab system (living quarters) on the upper floors. Some
of the shops from the ground level had special designs in their facades that allowed the merchants to
display the imported goods that they had for sale. The building had only one entrance per each
facade, and each of them led to the open central courtyard that aside from shops, had storerooms for
the merchant's goods. To get access to the upper floors, people had to use staircases that were
usually placed in a corner of the facades (Ismail 2005).
The khans and funduqs were buildings that had combined functions of hostel and trading centre and
were used mostly by traveling merchants and visitors to the city. These buildings were built mostly
near the trading routes outside the city, and they required towers for extra protection, however, some
of them were located inside the city and did not required to be fortified because of it. A major
difference is that these buildings did not had shops in

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum 's Art Collection
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's art collection blends history and culture to aesthetically
define a single individual: Isabella Stewart Gardner. From the "Mosaic Floor: Medusa" of the inner
courtyard, to "The Coronation of Hebe" (Paolo Veronese) on the ceiling of the third–floor Veronese
Room, Gardner determined every inch of both the interior and exterior of the structure housing her
personal collection of masterpieces. This museum was specifically designed to resemble a 15th–
century Venetian palazzo, inspired from the city that captured Gardner's heart and ultimate vision of
her legacy (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum). Assisted by Renaissance–revival architect, Willard
T. Sears, the palazzo–like structure was realized in its full glory, albeit Renaissance ornamentation
had no logical place in early 20th–century Boston, Massachusetts. However, Isabella Stewart
Gardner's fascination with the Renaissance was not solely because the works and buildings were
visually pleasing. A palazzo, for a wealthy family, was a lasting symbol of status. Gardner's choice
to create a museum inspired by this Renaissance structure demonstrates how this Renaissance
mindset can be translated into her modern context when crafting her own legacy.
The exterior of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is drastically more modest than the interior. In
the same fashion as the traditional palazzos of the Renaissance, the masonry is smooth and
understated. The flat roof resembles that of the Palazzo

Apart from its climatic functions, the cultural aspect has the same importance.

The main purpose of the Roman Perystile was of a garden or a beautiful arranged place, where
people were able to have walks or spend time outside the house on their own property. The columns
were built with two aims, the first one was for supporting the roof, and the second one to create a
beautiful architectural space, filled with specific roman details. Contrarily, for the Mesopotamians,
this place were designed only for technical and functional purposes that were supposed to bring sun
light and fresh air into the house, or to keep the temperature cool.
Mesopotamians had the tendency to build their courtyards hidden from the front door view. In order
to protect their house from street dust, they were placing them behind the corner of the passage.
First view from the entrance of an Roman house was the garden, that invited guests to spend time
there.
Climate had a big impact on architecture, therefore as a response to the hot–humid temperatures,
Mesopotamian courtyards were designed to control the circulation and cooling. Cool air was
channeled by night, by noon rising hot air was used in order to create cooling convention currents,
and by afternoon sun position permitted to created shadows, thus to create more cool currents. This

Azande House
In Africa's largest country, Sudan, is where the Azande people lived. In southwestern Sudan, north
of Zaire, and to the east of the Central African Republic to be exact. The Azande lived in houses
near the river bank where there was a lot of greenery and shade for their homes. They lived there for
some time before they were forced to move. They had to move away from the river banks and near
roads, because of a sickness spread by a bug that lived in the shrubbery there. In their new location,
a traditional home was built of mud and grass framed on wooden poles, and the roof that covered
their home was made out of grass as well. Each individual household also included a storehouse for
threshed grain or millet. These houses were made around courtyards, which was a common place for
gatherings. The way each plaza was made, organized, was basically personalized by its owner.
Meaning that each plaza reflected the personality of its owner. As I stated previously, by looking at
one's courtyard, someone could tell if the owner of the courtyard was well organized, hardworking,
and responsible. The maintenance of these courtyards was very important to them. All the adult
women each had their own storehouse to store grains and millet. A household with many people

Construction And Environmental Performance Of A Typical...
The Similarities and Differences Between the Design, Construction and Environmental Performance
of a Typical Mesopotamian 'Courtyard' House and a Roman 'Peristyle' House. To consider the
similarities and differences of the aforementioned aspects of the house types, it necessitates first to
define the terms under which the comparisons are made. Considering the era in question, 10000BC
until 550AD, it seems incomprehensible, whilst appreciating similarities due to influence of climate,
geographical location and peoples of the area, not to expect differences in the design. Here I use the
definition of design as an image created to communicate the appearance and function of a building,
due to the advancement of civilization in that time, and the increase in material want. Likewise,
advances in skill and technology (even at a very basic pre BC level, was huge, influencing the
construction; Construction I would define as – the action of building something, for example a
building or large structure. Lastly over time, the ancient civilizations would have become
increasingly aware of the potential and viability of adapting their buildings to reap the benefits of
environmental factors whilst at the same time and over time, incorporating environmental
performance; that is how the building reacts to its geographical location and climate. Placing both
houses in a historical context, the Mesopotamian 'courtyard' house dates more specifically to the

Essay On House Of The Vettii

  • 1. Essay on House of the Vettii House of the Vettii The House of the Vettii belonged to two freedmen, Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus, who amassed a fortune through a flourishing business. The House of the Vettii is not unusually large for the time or social standing of its owners, but it is obvious that the Vettii were affluent Pompeian citizens and the house compares to the other large, lavish houses found in Pompeii. (Mau, 1899: 315) Excavated in the late 19th century, the house is most notable for its remarkably well–preserved frescoes, beautiful garden and large triclinium. The rooms included in the house and the decoration in the various rooms reflect trends in Roman domestic architecture and art in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another smaller atrium can be accessed through a doorway on the right of the primary atrium. This atrium contains the house's lararium, or a shrine to the family's Lares. This lararium depicts the Genius of the household making a sacrifice and surrounded by two Lares. Underneath is a large snake, a symbol of beneficence and prosperity. (Guzzo, 1998: 60) In all houses of a higher standing there was an altar dedicated to the Lares and each family was placed under the protection of its own Lares. Neighborhoods probably had Lares as well, which looked over all of the households. "There were also those which presided over the aggregate destiny, no longer of such and such a financier or merchant, but of Pompeii as a whole; their temple was therefore situated at the hub of the city's activity, the Forum, between the Macellum and the Temple of Vespasian," wrote Marcel Brion, explaining the rising significance of the cult. (Brion, 1960: 88) The lararium in the atrium of the House of the Vettii is a well–preserved example of the household shrines. The second atrium is also closely associated with the ... • 2. Ekko Dialectical Journal After he opened the grand doors to the courtyard, Ekko was traumatized by the sight of his friends and family being held hostage by the Noxian soldiers. "Sacrifice your blade to me if you want to keep your friends in one piece," demanded Darius, the Noxian war commander, as he pressed the edge of his enormous axe against Jinx's neck. Intimidated by Darius's threat, Ekko readied himself to dive into danger. He reached into his pocket to take out a pair of googles that belonged to his close friend, Vi, before she became an example of those who challenged the Noxian Empire. The relic constantly reminded Ekko of the pact that they established to bring peace to Zaun from Noxus with as little innocent casualties as possible. He believed that her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Astonished by the unexpected fatality, Ekko leapt out of his brawl to examine the stained axe in the grasp of Darius's hand. "Some things you can't control Ekko, like the death of your despicable friends against my mighty strength," Darius exclaimed as he proudly propped his weapon onto his shoulder while the constant pinging of blood falling from the blade of the axe and hitting the pavement resonated throughout the courtyard. "Yeah Darius, you're right, I can't control some things. But I can control how I change the future," said Ekko. Although he was aggravated by the loss of Jinx, Ekko attempted to keep a confident expression to prove to Darius that he will only get stronger the more he losses. Ekko took off Vi's goggles and clenched them in his hand while thinking about how he couldn't control the loss of an innocent soul of his friend, this time. Ekko grabbed the dial on his blade and twisted it counterclockwise. As the chrono–energy coursed around him, Ekko watched as the life of Jinx rushed back into her, as each of the Noxian soldiers flew back into the murderous positions, as he walked away from the courtyard, and as the grand doors closed before him all in a matter of ... • 3. Case Study: Desert Shadow Middle School At Desert Shadow Middle School, a few improvements need to be managed by the student body. One of the first improvements is a problem with the school's building itself which will be explained as you read further on. Another change is the courtyard area, it is open and kind of messy. This is only the beginning of this list of things that need to change around here The first and foremost important improvement is the schools storage space. One thing that someone might notice when they get a tour of the school is that there are no lockers. Lockers can be very useful when people are going up in grades like junior high and high school. As kids get older, the curriculum gets harder which means giant textbooks, huge binders and a ton of papers. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Similarities Between The Hearst Castle And The Topakapi... Title That I Haven't Figured Out Yet The drastic difference in time periods between the Hearst Castle and the Topakapi Palace leads to the differentiation in materiality and function, but the similarities of both the structures come together with the grandiosity of the project and the lasting effect of the architecture. While the Hearst Castle was initially built just to accommodate the Hearst family, the Topakapi palace was built for Mehmed II and his dynasty. After a long line of collaboration with the Hearst family, Julia Morgan was assigned to design a space for William Randolph Hearst in San Simeon because he was "tired of going up and camping" and wanted "something that would be more comfortable".[1] Morgan began construction in 1919, and started with guest houses, since Hearst put emphasis on the idea of having his family and friends over. Additionally, Morgan partially based her design on the tower of the church at Ronda in Southern Spain, a favorite site of Hearst. The California location gave Morgan and Hearst the excuse to resemble and mimic the renaissance style of Southern Spain. Controversy, the Topakapi Palace was originally built in 1465 by the Sultan Mehmed II and his reign. The Topakapi Palace was a center for administration, education and most importantly, to accommodate the Sultan. Aspects of religion and spirituality were highly active through the site and the rich diversity of Islamic architecture was prevalent throughout the space. Despite the ... During the week there is always a large lunch rush around 11 am to 1 pm, the W.P. Casey as usual gets its influx of foot–traffic from those getting coffee, eating lunch, or going to class. The courtyard, by the Starbucks located within the walls of W.P. Carey, seems to be used for social reasons, but other individuals use it for an outer connection through social media and video games. In the middle of the structure is a small square semi enclosed courtyard. Utilizing that courtyard, my favorite place on the whole campus, I will conduct an autoethnography. In my autoethnography I will analyze what about the courtyard I love so much and what those things convey about my relationship with myself and others as well as my position within society. Autoethnographies combine elements of both autobiographies and ethnographies. Specifically, autoethnographies are academic essays that are introspective and narrative–oriented looks at the self, much like autobiographies and memoirs. However, autoethnographies are set apart from autobiographies and journals in that they join that introspection with ethnographic research methods concerned with connections between community and the self. Due to their unique nature, ethnographies are beneficial in enhancing cultural understanding of the connections between groups and individuals, as well as the self; and have the potential ability to transform the self and others through the cross– cultural building of bonds and understanding (Chang 2007). Using public and locations can be a helpful tool in self insight, as they encompass a specific discourse (Thomas 1987). • 10. Analysis Of Elegy Written In A Country Courtyard The poem "Elegy Written in a Country Courtyard" is delving into the them of death and the mind and thought of the speaker of the poem. The poem takes place in a country courtyard and describes the setting and other aspects of the cemetery near the courtyard. By looking at Thomas Gray's use of metaphors and alliterations to different aspects of the theme, we see that Thomas Gray focuses heavily on the themes of death and the simplicity of country life. He makes it a point to make the reader understand multiple times in his poem about death and how it will come for even the reader. He also goes into detail about how the life of country people are also a lot simpler and that they could have been people of high importance, but they were never given the same chances. In this poem, there is the constant notion that the author, Thomas Gray, is portraying the serenity of the courtyard and cemetery, but also the critical theme of darkness and death. The author basically writes his own elegy by the end of the poem. There is this theme through out the setting of the play and also through the way the speaker describes certain aspects of Death and how each person has to die eventually. The play starts off with the speaker walking in the courtyard and through the cemetery, looking at all the tombstones and the bareness of each. They are not expensive, well carved pieces that are sometimes thought of in other cemeteries. The significance being that the darkness of the night and how much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Courtyards: Typology In Architecture ABSTRACT The 'Courtyard' typology has existed for thousands of years in our country and can be traced back to the Indus valley civilization. Traditionally used as a central space between houses/rooms owned by individual families, courtyards served as the focal point of a settlement and strengthened interior relationships while keeping the outside separate; it served as a protective barrier against the climate, enemies, animals and so encouraged social interactions and became an important interface for all communal activities. As one of the most primeval typology in architecture, courtyards have been seen in all types of buildings, be it commercial, residential, institutional, recreational or industrial; however, they have been most prominent in residential dwellings. They serve as source of air flow, illumination and provide thermal comfort to a residence by acting as a heat radiator in summers and absorber in winters. Over time, these small openings were enlarged and ultimately led to the development of the centralized open courtyard we understand today. Traditionally, this typology was designed in an attempt to protect oneself against the harsh changing climate, enemies and animals; and to successfully bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor spaces by creating outdoor enclosures that offer environmental advantages and privacy, spaces that both – protect and expose at the same ... Early archaeologists believed in order to be considered a civilization a society must have cultural superiority, which meant they must have the ability to read and write. • 18. Politics and Economics of Bamako Within the complex political and economic networks present in Bamako, the capital of Mali, Sissako explores the modes and systems of communication present between the local population and a wider Western authority. The discourse of communication undertaken in Bamako (2006) is conveyed as unbalanced and restricted. Communication comes to embody and represent the contrasts between Western economics and power and those present in Mali. The local population are aware of and hear the court proceedings but are fundamentally unable to act upon this by way of influence and change. Throughout this essay I will focus on Sissako's use of silence as a narrative agent and explore the limited and one way stream of communication portrayed. The documentary style of filmmaking helps the audience to actively engage with the film and this relationship encourages the audience to question their understandings of communication in specific spatial and temporal situations. Whilst Sissako recognises and demonstrates this singular line of communication the potential for dual communication can also be inferred. I shall use Maigaurd's...to thread my ideas together. • 33. Gardner Museum Report No matter what floor of the museum I am on or what piece of artwork I am looking at, I always return to the center of the heart of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum– the interior courtyard. The courtyard was opened in 1903. It contains artwork, is a piece of artwork itself, and is a sanctuary in the bustling city. From the first time I visited the Gardner Museum when I was eight years old, I was captivated by the immense sense of peacefulness and pure delight that overcame me when the courtyard first came into my view. Just as some plants in the courtyard are there year–round while others are changed throughout the years, some things about me have stayed constant and others have changed since the first time I stepped inside the courtyard. When I first walked into the courtyard this time, I found my eyes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everyday I try to be as present as possible in everything that I do. As my eyes and mind finished taking in all the light touched, I began to notice what lurked in the shadows– a headless statue, parts of pillars deteriorating, and small imperfections. I did not remember this from the first time I visited the museum, which I feel shows the loss of innocence that comes with growing up. Even though when I first noticed them a sense of melancholy threatened to take away from the original serenity that I felt, I then began to find the beauty in the shadows. I always try to find the positive points in negative situations and find the beauty in what may not seem beautiful at first glance. As I looked closer at the headless statue and worn pillars I found myself imagining the stories behind them. Thinking of the hands and eyes they have touched over hundreds of years made me once again realize the beauty even in the darkest of the shadows. Even though we may lose some of our innocence as we age, we are also often less afraid of the shadows, and we are willing to walk towards them and find that what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Importance Of Commercial Buildings In The Ottoman Empire Secondly, commercial buildings were so popular in Cairo because it was already a major trading point for the Ottoman Empire. The different type of commercial buildings were wikalas, khans, qaisariyas, suqs, and funduqs. Ismail explains that these type of buildings existed since the Mameluke Empire period, but they were kept being built during the Ottoman Empire, with some minor changes. The wikalas were buildings located within the city walls and had a design that had shops on the ground floor that faced onto courtyards and a rab system (living quarters) on the upper floors. Some of the shops from the ground level had special designs in their facades that allowed the merchants to display the imported goods that they had for sale. The building had only one entrance per each facade, and each of them led to the open central courtyard that aside from shops, had storerooms for the merchant's goods. To get access to the upper floors, people had to use staircases that were usually placed in a corner of the facades (Ismail 2005). The khans and funduqs were buildings that had combined functions of hostel and trading centre and were used mostly by traveling merchants and visitors to the city. These buildings were built mostly near the trading routes outside the city, and they required towers for extra protection, however, some of them were located inside the city and did not required to be fortified because of it. A major difference is that these buildings did not had shops in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Descriptive Essay On An Imperial Complex The Imperial complex built in my honor sits on the highest hill of the capitol serving as the city's architectural focal point and drawing the eye of both the residents and visitors. Meant to symbolize the expanse of my wealth and power as a ruler, the complex sits above the thriving capital, reminding the residents of the sole person responsible for the wondrous accomplishments and successes of the people. The location also helps protect the complex as the defensive walls and watch towers appear large due to the additions of the hills. To visit my complex, one must travel through the highly decorated roads of the hills, past beautiful vegetation and scenic views of the countryside. However, once at the entrance of my complex, a massive gate greets the visitors, and leads them to a small courtyard, with gardens and decorative fountains. Above the main door, my tugra marks the complex, visually demonstrating the importance of this site. The main entrance leads into a reception hall, a long and narrow room with colonnades marking off smaller side rooms for guests to interact and marvel at the decorations and beauty of the room. Through the utilization of spoila, the columns appear in various shades of marble, adding to the regality of the space. Muqarnas consistently decorate the room, as many exist within the niches of the room and on the tops of the columns. Furthermore, the muqarnas dome found in the center of the hall invokes awe within the viewers, and illustrates both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum 's Art Collection The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's art collection blends history and culture to aesthetically define a single individual: Isabella Stewart Gardner. From the "Mosaic Floor: Medusa" of the inner courtyard, to "The Coronation of Hebe" (Paolo Veronese) on the ceiling of the third–floor Veronese Room, Gardner determined every inch of both the interior and exterior of the structure housing her personal collection of masterpieces. This museum was specifically designed to resemble a 15th– century Venetian palazzo, inspired from the city that captured Gardner's heart and ultimate vision of her legacy (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum). Assisted by Renaissance–revival architect, Willard T. Sears, the palazzo–like structure was realized in its full glory, albeit Renaissance ornamentation had no logical place in early 20th–century Boston, Massachusetts. However, Isabella Stewart Gardner's fascination with the Renaissance was not solely because the works and buildings were visually pleasing. A palazzo, for a wealthy family, was a lasting symbol of status. Gardner's choice to create a museum inspired by this Renaissance structure demonstrates how this Renaissance mindset can be translated into her modern context when crafting her own legacy. The exterior of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is drastically more modest than the interior. In the same fashion as the traditional palazzos of the Renaissance, the masonry is smooth and understated. The flat roof resembles that of the Palazzo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Similarities and Differences Between a Mesopotamian... The similarities and differences between the design, construction and environmental performance of a typical Mesopotamian 'courtyard' and a Roman 'peristyle' house The idea of courtyard goes back to Neolithic Times. It was conceived for such needs as providing protection from natural forces : weather, wild life or human invasions. Later on, it was transformed in functional architecture that can be characterized by its design, structure and environment uses. Apart from its climatic functions, the cultural aspect has the same importance. Vittirio Gregotti is describing the courtyard as an architectural act par excellence saying :"The enclosure not only establishes a specific relationship with a specific place but is the principle by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main purpose of the Roman Perystile was of a garden or a beautiful arranged place, where people were able to have walks or spend time outside the house on their own property. The columns were built with two aims, the first one was for supporting the roof, and the second one to create a beautiful architectural space, filled with specific roman details. Contrarily, for the Mesopotamians, this place were designed only for technical and functional purposes that were supposed to bring sun light and fresh air into the house, or to keep the temperature cool. Mesopotamians had the tendency to build their courtyards hidden from the front door view. In order to protect their house from street dust, they were placing them behind the corner of the passage. First view from the entrance of an Roman house was the garden, that invited guests to spend time there. Climate had a big impact on architecture, therefore as a response to the hot–humid temperatures, Mesopotamian courtyards were designed to control the circulation and cooling. Cool air was channeled by night, by noon rising hot air was used in order to create cooling convention currents, and by afternoon sun position permitted to created shadows, thus to create more cool currents. This helps to maintain a normal temperature in summer. The organization was appropriate to that specific climate as it contributed to creating of a pleasant microclimate by cooling and humidifying the internal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Azande House In Africa's largest country, Sudan, is where the Azande people lived. In southwestern Sudan, north of Zaire, and to the east of the Central African Republic to be exact. The Azande lived in houses near the river bank where there was a lot of greenery and shade for their homes. They lived there for some time before they were forced to move. They had to move away from the river banks and near roads, because of a sickness spread by a bug that lived in the shrubbery there. In their new location, a traditional home was built of mud and grass framed on wooden poles, and the roof that covered their home was made out of grass as well. Each individual household also included a storehouse for threshed grain or millet. These houses were made around courtyards, which was a common place for gatherings. The way each plaza was made, organized, was basically personalized by its owner. Meaning that each plaza reflected the personality of its owner. As I stated previously, by looking at one's courtyard, someone could tell if the owner of the courtyard was well organized, hardworking, and responsible. The maintenance of these courtyards was very important to them. All the adult women each had their own storehouse to store grains and millet. A household with many people living in it, would have many storehouses, granaries, and homes around its courtyard. • 39. The Party Exited the Courtyard Minister Mike's party included Skylar, Ethan, Mr Pisher and a meager handful of the remaining students each of whom tolerated the midday sun as they walked single–file around the massive Palace structure. The once magnificent lush grounds had turned into withering vegetation. Water was scarce. The new Government could not afford this luxurious expensive. Those who lived in the region did not know why the devoted groundskeepers had recently abandoned their post. Soon, it would become evident as Minister Mike's party continued around Egyptian style Palace. The Babylon summer Palace was shaped in a U design, so when Minister Mike saw the balcony above the first wing; he noticed Giselle by herself clutching the railing. She looked nauseated. He wanted to say something. However, Mike felt it best to leave her alone. Mike did not see Daniel ducking behind the balcony French door. The Minister's party rounded the Palace. There they strolled into the three–sided courtyard. Marble terraced steps leaded from an Olympic–size swimming pool to the main residence level. The scale of the Saddam's Babylon Palace would rival those in Europe; mounted above the Babylon ruins, it was easy to imagine the grand parties hosted poolside. Now a drained pool sat eroding with desert debris. The diving board was scattered from its mountings. It gave an eerie appearance to the dismal Palace grounds. Skylar ascended the steps into the pool, and turn back to the Minister. She mimicked a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Construction And Environmental Performance Of A Typical... The Similarities and Differences Between the Design, Construction and Environmental Performance of a Typical Mesopotamian 'Courtyard' House and a Roman 'Peristyle' House. To consider the similarities and differences of the aforementioned aspects of the house types, it necessitates first to define the terms under which the comparisons are made. Considering the era in question, 10000BC until 550AD, it seems incomprehensible, whilst appreciating similarities due to influence of climate, geographical location and peoples of the area, not to expect differences in the design. Here I use the definition of design as an image created to communicate the appearance and function of a building, due to the advancement of civilization in that time, and the increase in material want. Likewise, advances in skill and technology (even at a very basic pre BC level, was huge, influencing the construction; Construction I would define as – the action of building something, for example a building or large structure. Lastly over time, the ancient civilizations would have become increasingly aware of the potential and viability of adapting their buildings to reap the benefits of environmental factors whilst at the same time and over time, incorporating environmental performance; that is how the building reacts to its geographical location and climate. Placing both houses in a historical context, the Mesopotamian 'courtyard' house dates more specifically to the time 10000BC to 600BC, whilst the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
