1. AN APPLEGATE RIVER, JACKSON COUNTRY OREGON
History and background
The Applegate Rive (Named for Oregon pioneer Lindsay Applegate) is situated in the East
Siskiyou mountain of Jackson country Oregon. So for this river is the key source of water
management system, natural resources and considered as a vital source of water for human and
all kinds of species across the Oregon. Besides that the Applegate river has the profound impacts
on the floral composition and character (Siskiyou’s) Prior inhabitants had comparatively less and
no visible effects on the land. However a little effects on the drainage pattern caused due to the
mining of gold mines along the Applegate River Oregon.
Geographical overview
The little Applegate river is originate on the highest slope of the Siskiyou crest in the east a part
Siskiyou Mountain. The river flow northwest for almost 25 miles before joining the Applegate
River a short distance upstream. There are some famous parts that are joining the river such as
Woodrat Mountain Anderson Butte Red Mountain etc…
The Siskiyou mountain from the sub range of the Klamath mountain geological province the age
of the rocks is Mesozoic .
2. Problem statement
I will strive to analyze some problems that occur currently alongside the Applegate river
Oregon such as Overgrazing, Hunting, and Mining that ultimately cause hazardous threats for
human and animal kingdoms.
Recent issue and events must be addressed in Applegate River Oregon
Mining was very rapid in in recent century and it is the major factor of the today century while
irrigation and grazing become significant uses and impacts to the environment during the 1995
and the 2015 irrigation become more intensive issue since today. For instance the mining cause
disturbance to the drainage pattern of the Applegate River and ultimate cause the physical
problems for humans. Likewise Irrigation effects the seasonal time of the Oregon and also
affects the marine species in the river. Moreover logging, grazing deplete the soil layer and
quality of the soil and grass that ultimately cause the soil Erosion and weathering of soil and clay.
Researcher reported that there is large number of hunting recorded in the Applegate River
Oregon, Animal hunted a large amount and there is the threat of extinction of some species
Human activities and their effect on the Landscape of the Applegate River.
Streams and fish Habitat
Before the Euro America adjustment most of these fishes of the Applegate river possibly were
taken by the Dakubetede people who was in habited of the lower drainage used during the
warmer season. Researcher reported that Lower Klamath has a best producer of the adequate
3. fish’s harvests. River drainage inter group conflict may have played a much lesser role i.e. the
Takleme and Shasta people.
But people are threaten fishes habitat due to several activities like waste material of the human
on the interior side of the river
Mining
Small scale placer mining in recent days definitely would have increased sediments in the little
Applegate River during both the Chinook and the coho runs off fall with the amount of
sediments. Mining materials deposit in the River and cause harmful effects for fishes and other
Marine organisms
However the total turbidity and sedimentation attributable to numerous pick and shoval miners
along lower sterling creek for example it may not have been important when compared to that
originating from natural winter causes for example floods 1852 and the 1860
Riparian vegetation change
The relative magnitude of the loggings hydrological impacts compared to that from other
activities is the subject of continuing controversy, however the impacts of harvest and associated
activities on water quality and water quantity and physical habitat in southwestern Oregon are
generally agreed to have been substantial.
Wildlife
4. The notion that holes of mining effect the wild life of the animals has been a highly contentious
problem as people have contrasting perspective pertaining to this notion while some reports
suggested that bigger hole of mining effects the wild life of the animals and plants as well, Wild
life animals are the major source of food in the along the Applegate Oregon while extinction of
these animals is threat to the whole Oregon population.
Hunting
Hunting is the problem for the Oregon, Trapping led to the near extirpation of beaver in the
eastern Siskiyou. Later trapping probably lowered significantly to population of other high
elevation muster lids such as marten fisher and Wolverine by the turn of the century.
The effects of ranching Grazing
In the lower elevation agricultural activity during the in recent century the spread of Himalayan
blackberry is on the peak such as Teasel, Mullein and other toxic weeds especially in cultivated
areas Further more livestock grazing began impacting the upper layer of soil and cause soil
erosion .
There are also some common issues regarding health in Oregon such as Obesity, Alcohol and
substance abuse, using of Tabaco, oral health, Immunization rates, suicide, and Communicable
diseases. I will discuss some key issues below:
Suicide
5. Nowadays Suicide is major causes of death in Oregon and nationally. It is reported that almost 2
people die by suicide in every 24 hours according to the OPHD every year the rate of suicide is
600 people and additionally 1700 people reached in hospital due to serious injuries and this rate
has been increased day by day that is the serious issue for addressed.
OBESITY
Study reveals that Obesity is the 2nd highest threat of death in Oregon, The health authorities
reported that almost 1500 people die in every year due to the Obesity because the Obesity cause
several health illnesses such as heart diseases diabetes, Asthma and other chronic diseases. If the
issue of Obesity will be solved the others least diseases would be reduced like blood pressure,
stroke and depression
Some Precautions must be apply
Reduces the mining activities
Ban the hunting especially along the watershed Area of the river
Restrict the entry of Herbivorous animals
Proper remediation’s for the wild life animals
Waste materials should be dumped into the earth
Lunched distinct campaigns regarding environmental issues and their solutions
6. To conclude, it is mandatory that we strike a balance in our policies while confronting this issue
to assure prevention from exposure to its potentially grave ramifications benefitting from its
fruitful aspects for our Oregon environment.
