1. For our preliminary task, we were asked to demonstrate successfully a match on
action, shot reverse shot and a master shot while obeying the 180 degree rule. This
clip had to be kept short while following some sort of storyline. I believe that as a
group we managed to stick to our plan well and also chose the correct locations
to film in which enabled us to use natural lighting and also block out any
unnecessary noise easily.
2. To fulfil the criteria, we effectively showed our protagonist walking towards a door
and then him coming through it from the other side, this is where we created our
match on action. I think that our match on action worked well as there are no errors
and it flows well. Additionally, we managed to achieve our shot/reverse shot and
master shot well during the conversation between the protagonist and antagonist.
To do this, we did over shoulder shots and edited the clips together. I believe this
worked well as when we watch over the final clip, we can fully understand the
conversation and also get a feel of how each character feels in response to each
other. Furthermore, we showed a close up towards the end of the clip of the
problem being resolved, this was done to create effect and also end it at a point.
This worked well as we do not see the clip randomly being cut off at the end.
Moreover, we obeyed the 180 degree rule through the beginning half of the filming
however towards the end we broke this rule. To avoid this next time, we will
properly set out a plan for us to follow.
3. During the filming process we learnt how to manage sound, organise actors, choose
suitable locations and how to correctly film and frame. When it came to filming in our
first location which was the canteen staircase we had trouble as there were many
people passing by and also a lot of background sound. To tackle this, we decided
that it would be best to change locations to the middle staircase as it was a lot
quieter. Another plus side to this was that lighting in this area was fairly better. In
addition, we had to organise our own actors which we had slight difficulty with due
to failing to select them earlier which meant that when we did find our
characters, we had to rush our filming. To avoid this in the future, we have decided
that it would be best to organise actors earlier and also stick to a strict filming
schedule, in this way it will allow all actors to be where they need to be at the right
time. Another side that we learned during the filming was how to properly frame. We
had to re-film shots where the protagonists head was cut off, to correct this error we
readjusted the tripod and head of camera.
4. From the process of making the film, we used Final Cut Pro to edit our clips
together to form our Preliminary Task. By using this programme, many skills were
learnt. One of the main skills was how to effectively use the colour correcting
tool. We needed to use this as the lighting in different locations varied therefore
we needed to use this tool to create similarities and to avoid the obvious
change in lighting. Other skills that we enhanced were fade and cut. The cut
tool was the most common one that we used as there were many unwanted
clips that we wanted to exclude which the cut tool helped us get rid of.
