The Internet is a worldwide network that connects computer networks and allows them to transmit data using the Internet Protocol. It was developed in the late 1960s by the U.S. Department of Defense to enable communication between researchers. The first message was sent over ARPANET in 1969. By the 1990s, use of the Internet exploded and its management was transferred to independent organizations in 1995. Now it is used worldwide for communication, information sharing, commerce, and social networking.

worldwide, publicly
accessible network of
interconnected computer
networks that transmit

6. President Eisenhower ordered the
creation of Advanced Research Project
Agency (ARPA) to jump-start the U.S
technology and find safeguards against a
space-based missile attack
7. After creation of ARPA the
IPTO(Information Processing Techniques
office) was created to extend the research
carried out into computerization of air
defense and to protect the U.S against a
space-based nuclear attack.
8. A special computer called an Interface
message processor was developed by
Prof. Leonard Kleinrock.
9. • The first networking protocol used on ARPANET
was the network control program.
• ARPANET was the network that became the basis
for the Internet. Based on a concept first published
in 1967, ARPANET was developed under the
direction of the U.S. ARPA.
• In 1983 the network control program was replaced
with the TCP/IP protocol.
10. Use of the internet exploded after 1990,
causing the U.S. Government to transfer
management to independent organizations
starting in 1995. Since 1995 the internet has
evolved with social media, e-mail, e-
commerce, mobile internet, blogs and so on
