SPEAKING EXERCISE ( Q SKILLS1 U1)
*Start the topic with the question “What are the most popular names for girls and for
boys in Turkey?”.
*Write GIRLS and BOYS on the board. Students take their chances and try to find names on
the “Top 5” lists. First give each student only one chance and ask them one by one. If they
can’t find all of them, go for the second round.
*When they find all the names, ask them why those names are popular and whether
they know their meaning or not. (You can find the meanings and the “Top 5” lists
below.) You don’t have to go over them all.
*Next students make groups of 3 talk about two questions in their groups. Write these
questions on the board: Q1: What does your name mean? Q2: What is the story of
your name?” Demonstrate the activity (You talk about your name). At this point encourage
students to ask questions.
*When they start talking in their groups, walk around and monitor them discreetly. Try not to
interfere. If you hear any mistakes note them down again discreetly.
When all 3 people in the groups finish, ask if there have been any interesting stories they have
heard from their friends. Don’t ask that person when they give out a name, ask her/his group
members.
After that, go over the mistakes on the board. DON’T say who made that specific mistake.
Girls
Fatma: woman who stops breastfeeding her child
Ayse: a person living in peace
Emine: trustworthy
Hatice: a baby girl who was born before her time
Zeynep: valuable stones
Boys
Ali: supreme, great
Huseyin: little beloved person
Hasan: beautiful
Ibrahim: father of the faithful
Ismail: the one who hears his God
