4. If you want to return to Rome ... flip a coin
This wonderful source has a very nice tradition "the tradition of the coin" is that if
you want to return to Rome must throw a coin into the fountain.
More specifically you should throw the right hand over the left shoulder. Where
does come this custom? because of a 1954 film called "Three Coins in the
Fountain" which won an Oscar. In her 3 girls look for love in Rome and the three
coins are the key to the movie.
Although it seems silly these coins help the needy because with them it subsidizes
a supermarket in Rome for the poor.
5. It is a considerable amount , an
estimated 3,000 euros are
thrown into the fountain each
day. Thieves have no breaks
and there are regular attempts
to steal coins from the fountain
even though it is illegal to do so
usually frustrated by the police
and tourists.
6. The history of the fountain
On the facade of the current source is a scene that defines the origin of the source end of the Aqua
Virgo aqueduct, one of the aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome is represented.
Depicted legend says that in 19 BC thirsty Roman soldiers were led by a girl to a source of pure
water thirteen kilometers (8.1 miles) from the city of Rome. The discovery of the source Augusto
led to commission the construction of an aqueduct twenty kilometers (14 miles) leads to the city,
which was named Aqua Virgo or Virgin Waters, in honor of the young legend. The aqueduct served
the thermal baths of Agrippa, and Rome, for over four years.
In 1629 Pope Urban VIII, finding the earlier fountain insufficiently dramatic, he asked Bernini to
sketch possible renovations, but the project was abandoned when the pope died.
Though Bernini's project was never completed, there is a lot of Bernini at the source, today.
In 1730 Pope Clement XII organized a contest in which Nicola Salvi initially lost to Alessandro Galilei
7. - but due to the protest in Rome over the fact that a Florentine won, Salvi was awarded the work.
The works began in 1732 and the fountain was completed in 1762, long after Salvi's death, when
the Oceanus (god of all water) sculptor Pietro Bracci was established in the central niche.

9. Salvi died in 1751 with his work half-finished, but he had made sure unsightly sign of stubborn
barber not spoil the ensemble, hiding behind a sculpted vase, called by the Romans Asso di Coppe,
the "Ace of Cups ".
The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini, who substituted the present
allegories for planned sculptures of Agrippa and "Trivia", the Roman virgin. It was officially opened
and inaugurated on May 22 by Pope Clement XIII. Most of the piece is made of travertine stone
quarry near Tivoli, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) east of Rome.

Statues of Trevi Fountain
12. Statues of Trevi Fountain
The backdrop of the fountain is the Palazzo Poli, given a new
facade with a giant order of Corinthian pilasters that link the two
main stories. The Taming of the waters is the theme of the gigantic
project falling forward, mixing water and rockwork, and filling the
small square. Tritons guide the carriage shell Oceanus' hippocamps
dressage.
In the center of an arc of triumph robustly modeling it is
superimposed on the facade of the palace. The central niche
framing Oceanus or Neptune has free-standing columns for
maximum light and shadow.
13. In the niches flanking Oceanus statue of Abundance is
poured water from his urn. →
Tritons and horses provide symmetrical balance, with
maximum contrast in their mood and poses characteristic
rococo that by 1730, was already booming in France and
Germany.
14. On the other side Salud holding a cup from which a snake drinks.
