Atca Success Cen120305

 1. 1. xTCA Product Segments: Which Ones Will Take Off? Bart Stuck Executive Chairman CorEdge Networks 7 December 2005
 2. 2. Assigned Question

How do you carve up the application space between

ATCA star,

ATCA mesh,

ATCA300, and

MicroTCA?

 3. 3. Reaction

We’re talking about two orthogonal issues here

Form Factor (uTCA versus ATCA; ATCA 300 versus standard ATCA depth)

Switching fabric : Star; Double Star; Mesh

Let’s deal with each in turn

 4. 4. Form Factor

ATCA versus µ TCA

For once, we agree with the conventional wisdom

A logical role for each; uTCA at the end office and data centers; ATCA in telco cores

Since a lot of new installations (particularly for wireless and data centers) are at the edge of the network, 80% of xTCA cards will be uTCA

However, we suspect that 80% of profits will be made in ATCA, due to heavier switching fabric and software component

ATCA 300

Larger boards->more feature/function!

Quad AMC- µ TCA: more connector space

Power over Ethernet as a market driver

 5. 5. Switching Fabric

Star versus mesh

Star is intrinsically less costly->low end

Mesh offers greater potential redundancy, throughput->high end

Star versus double star

Since ATCA will be used in major telecom facilities with five nines availability requirements, strongly suspect that double star will win

 6. 6. Conclusions

µ TCA for edge of network

ATCA in core of network

ATCA300 and ATCA will coexist

ATCA and uTCA markets will be two tier

Low end single star/dual star

High end mesh

Big Winner: AMC
