2. Photography: This photo is very sexy, with the use of an attractive, highly respected singer. She is wearing predominately black and white, which although is basic, still stands out. Her pose is obviously staged, as she is looking into the camera giving the reader an almost personal feel. Layout: The majority of the text is situated on the left hand side, so that when stacked on a self, the main headlines can still be read. The writing also curves around her body to further highlight. Design: the models head is slightly blocking the title of the magazine which although blinds some of the name, forces Fergie (the model) to be the center of the magazine. As she is such a well known star, this will sell more than the title alone. Attitudes: although the background is white, symbolizing purity, the rebellious looking sexy woman contradicts this feeling, replacing it with an uncontroversial abstract look. Values: Blender is an American music magazine that billed itself as "the ultimate guide to music and more". It is also known for sometimes steamy pictorials of celebrities. Photography: again this magazine uses the star Fergie as a selling point. She is wearing a type of swim suit, looking sexy again. Fergie is sat within a Cake, an image often associated with parties and Stag dues – suggesting fun, parties and good times. Her blue costume matches that of the colour of the title, reinforcing that Fergie “is” this magazine. Layout: This layout seems more centered than the previous one. Text is more balanced either side, not conforming to regular layouts of keeping to the left hand side. This suggests to me that the reputation of this magazine is more established, meaning their magazines sell to regular fans than to last-minute spontaneous buyers. Design : There seem to be four main colours used, Red, Blue, white and green. The blue being used on both he title and the model present a nice like from the magazine to celebrities in general. The red text covering a white cake stands out boldly, stating the ‘holiday issue’ perhaps attempting to draw readers in suggesting they can provide ideas and activities whilst the majority of people have time off. Attitudes: These components combined paint the picture of one big party, including conventions of fun, carelessness and cake. It seems to be a very light magazine, without too many ethical articles just looking to entertain. Values: Rave is an Indian music magazine, launched in March 2002. As of February 2009, it had published 68 issues. The magazine showcased both Indian and European tastes/cultures.
3. Photography: Photo of Coldplay is very simple. It shows the internationally known band members, in a normal pretty average stance. There is a plain white background, making the band stand out even more, appealing to their fans and any person who likes their music. Layout: The text here is quite centred, but its logo and the use of the band name ‘U2’ are situated in the left 3 rd . Q is such a famous respected magazine with an already existing fan base, just using the title in the left 3 rd is enough to sell magazines. Using the band “u2” and Coldplay sells to those who are looking to buy a music magazine, but do not have prior knowledge. Design: the read skyline and lower situated red tag lines, seem to create a frame for this magazine. Coldplay placed in-between these borders and in front of a white background really make them jump from the page, catching attention, encouraging impulse buyers. Attitudes: Coldplay is a notorious Indie band, this is represented in their clothing. They are dressed differently to what you would see on the high street, yet is still fashionable. This unique clothing style suggests an almost ‘we don’t care’ attitude, as they do not feel the need to conform to regular outfits. Values: Q is a music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom, with a circulation of 130,179 as of June 2007.Founders Mark Ellen and David Hepworth were dismayed by the music press of the time, which they felt was ignoring a generation of older music buyers who were buying CDs Photography: This photo is during a performance, in front of a yellow lit stage. Matthew Bellemy is the lead singer from Muse, and is well known as a rebellious rocker. In this photo, he is looking down at his guitar as if it is all that matters. With a strong sense of concentration on his face, the reader can instantly recognise that this is a well respected musician. His head is blocking part of the title, telling me that this is a well known magazine and the title does not need to be completely visible to be recognised. Layout: on the left 3 rd left side there is a list of famous bands. These well known bands act as a great selling point, pulling any fans of these particular bands into buying it. Across the centre of the cover are the words “100 greatest gigs ever” . Having this on top of Matthew Bellemy suggests he is one of these great gigs, further pulling music fans in, even if they do not know who he is. Design: the selling line here is “life is loud” although this is being partially blocked, it is the same phrase as other issues, so does not need to be completely clear, as it is a recognised attribute of the magazine itself. Underneath the “100 greatest gigs ever” is the line “your votes and in! and the winners are….” this leading line sets curiosity in the readers mind, making them wonder if their already made presumptions are right, who won, who didn’t win ect ect. This direct sort of language makes an audience feel personally involved and wanting to read on. Attitudes: Matthew’s face here is concerntrated completely on his gutitar, suggesting the attitude that music is all that matters, he doesn’t care what’s going on around him, whether it’s the economy or the environment. And escape from everything bar music. Values: Kerrang! is a rock music magazine published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United Kingdom. The magazine's name is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound made when playing a power chord on an electric guitar.
4. Photography: this photo is very posed, with Lily Allen staring directly into the camera and therefore introducing her self to the reader. She is put onto a plain white background, framing her face and jumping from the page. Reversed black and white text is very abstract and bold. Lily’s face is made to look very pale and white, suggests that she has indeed “taken on the world” also, her hair and skin matches the inverted colours of the leading article. Layout: the 3 rd left has Lily Allen's name init, pulling Fans of not just Lily, but music fans in general, as she is a large influential artist. Design: The red Header and the lower tag lines act as a frame for Lily Allen, highlighting her face. These two bright red patches of colour really draw your eyes to the contents. Attitudes: the standfirst of this magazine is very indie/gothic. Her staring pose looks straight into the readers eye, almost drawing you in. This over use of makeup reveals she doesn’t mind how she looks. Lily Allen is notoriously a rebellious girl known for not caring what she says. This look her face really supports this, as it seems asif she is bored and not really concentrating. Values: The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom which has been published weekly since March 1952. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, which first appeared in the 14 November 1952 edition. Photography: Members on the gossip here are revealing some tattoos and wearing some retro glasses. This unusual clothing and style reveals their individuality, possibly reflecting their music style. They have also been placed on a white background, highlighting their uniqueness. Layout: the third left is filled with recognisable words such as “MUSE” and “NOEL” notorious names within the music industry. When stacked on a shelf, these words can still be seen, and aim to stand out from other magazines stacked near by. Design: this magazine is arguably the most recognised music mag out, and because of this they can afford to block part of their mast head with a band members face. The lead article and pull quote are coloured in white and red. These colours match those of the Masthead/Logo, suggesting that the gossip “are” NME magazine. Attitudes: Having the lead singer, Beth Ditto, looking down out of her glasses in this almost teacheristic manner, gives a command like look. Having two men either side of her as if they are her Hench men, suggests she is powerful and respected. She is also dressed in black, contrasting to the white revealing her importance in the band and possibly her important in the music industry itself. Values: The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom which has been published weekly since March 1952. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, which first appeared in the 14 November 1952 edition
5. Photography: Madonna. Anyone who’s anyone knows who Madonna is. Which such an iconic well known star, this photo can afford to be slightly more artistic, covering up more of her face than you would other less known musicians. She is wearing what appears to be a boxing robe, the type boxers wear before a fight. This piece of clothing associated with competition suggests she is a competitive successful singer. Having her looking out towards the reader gives a more personal in-depth feel. Layout: having such a star on the front cover, Q have obviously pushed her name as far to left hand side as possible, revealing as much of her name as they can when stacked on a shelf, thus pulling more fans into purchasing it. Design: the logo of Q is coloured white and red, as well as the band names e.g. MADONNA,ROLLLING STONES and ARTIC MONKEYS. Colouring these the same red pulls your attention straight to these key words, immediately recognising these huge names and recognising how respected these magazines must be to hold such stars. Attitudes: as I mentioned earlier, Madonna here is wearing a robe, one associated with boxing. This gives an attitude of fighting spirit, desire to win and succeed. As Madonna has done so well for her self, she is being portrayed as a winner. Values: Q is a music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom, with a circulation of 130,179 as of June 2007.Founders Mark Ellen and David Hepworth were dismayed by the music press of the time, which they felt was ignoring a generation of older music buyers who were buying CDs Photography: Jenny Lewis in this photo is made to look somewhat childish. Her t-shirt is basic, she is holding balloons, and her makeup is somewhat minimal. The baloons float behind the title of the magaine, almost bordering the text and drawing attention to it. Jenny herself is seen to be staring up at it, suggesting this magazine appeals to even stars like herself. Layout: the third left of this cover consists of the cover line and a few bullet points. Blurt is not a very well known magazine, and conforming to magazine stereo types such as keeping to the 3 rd left side of the cover, is not imperative. It is likely this magazine will be predominately purchased by those who regularly by it, and there for does not appeal to impulse buyers. Design: more famous names such as Daft Punk and Jenny Lewis are highlighted in pink, to quickly snap attention to it. Seeing these big names encourages potential costumers, as they can identify with these bands and maybe lure them into wonder what it will say about them. Attitudes: with the use of many primary colours and simple images, a very childish simple attitude it portrayed here. Such images suggest to me that this magazine is aimed at a lower age, and the contents will be more easy going and simplistic. Values: BLURT is a niche magazine, appealing to those who already know of its existence. It was initially created by and Band in 1979. little effort has been put into its development as the bend had an already existing career.
